Don Julio y Dos XX. The breakfast of Champions!
Duncan R.

My girlfriend and I use "Unique Eats and Eateries of Indiana" as the basis of guiding us through local places we might never try otherwise. We selected The Tin Plate as our most recent pick and trekked off to Elwood to sample the local fare. If you're in the mood for an exceptional tenderloin or a classic Manhattan then this is what should be on your radar. We started with some jalapeño poppers, which were pretty good, but not our ultimate goal. The tenderloin wasn't quite as large as a hubcap but was still substantial. The Manhattan was platter sized and succulent. The friendly service made up for a wee bit of a wait. Our drinks were cold and our food was hot, which in my book is pretty important. The Tin Plate is a rural, small town, family bar. This ain't the Ritz or something romantic but was still a cool spot and worth the jaunt! BTW - The local stray cat "Dexter" is pretty friendly and doesn't mind a little human interaction...or handout...

Half oz . Breaded Tenderloin

TL;DR. Great tenderloin; short menu. Made the drive up to Elwood specifically for the tenderloin and was not disappointed. My wife and I split one with a side of onion rings. It's super cool that offer this on the menu with a nominal fee for a second bun and condiments. The tenderloin is very crispy and seasoned well. The service was speedy and attentive, not at all like others have posted. Our waitress even took our order electronically so it hit the kitchen faster. It's a bar atmosphere which was nothing special which we were ok with. No smoking either. The beer was cold and they serve Coke products.

Stopped in after a local referral and was not disappointed! Great prices, full bar and good food. The staff was excellent and accommodating. The tenderloin is clearly the crowd favorite and the menu has options to share which I recommend. We shared and had more than enough to eat. Typical pub menu with lots of Indiana staples like bbq pork. Friendly staff and lots of group seating. Gluten free options minimal but doable. Outdoor seating during warmer months so you can bring your furry friends too.

This was my first time eating here, and everything was excellent! Our party of 5 all ordered different foods, and we were all sampling each other's choices. We also had an excellent server, I didn't get her name, but she was awesome!

I don't know if there is a new owner or not. Service has gone down hill. New menu was unwarranted. Food is mediocre.

The parking lot was pretty full when I got there and I thought well that's a good sign. I walked in and didn't see any signs to say to wait to be seated so I kind of lingered by the door until somebody came by and said they would be with me in a minute. I was seated at a table near the back of the restaurant. My waitress came to take my order and yes she was wearing a mask but it was underneath of her chin! She wore it that way the entire time I was in the restaurant as she waited on other customers and brought food out. She took my order but she failed to tell me that there were specials that day I saw them on a board as I was leaving. I ordered a patty melt and fries. I waited for my order, waited 45 minutes in a diner! I got my food and it was just okay. The onions on the patty melt were not grilled long enough so they were sort of crunchy the bread was hosted on the outside almost to the point of being too much. They may have had a bad day but it is highly unlikely I will stop here again especially with the lack of concern for covid.

The facility is not overly attractive or inviting. You have to decide which door to use depending on which business you are frequenting. I didn't see any signs for the outdoor seating to direct you to the hostess. The parking lot is large with lots of spaces up close. We were here for food so we picked the door to Grains & Grill. The host was very friendly and kind. The inside looked welcoming. The journey to get to the outdoor seating was a bit of a maze. There seems to be plenty of comfortable indoor seating though it is kind of broken up in disjointed rooms. The outside area was nice. The over hang shielded us from the sun in our evening dinning hours. I found the tables to be a bit close together. There was another party next to our table so we had to be cautious about moving chairs to get situated. The outdoor chairs have a flexible plastic seat. The seat seemed to give more than made me comfortable. The chair seemed a bit flimsy. However, it was comfortable and didn't collapse on me. We started with the fried mushrooms. There were a LOT of small mushroom tips in this order. The batter was thicker and a bit mushy. There wasn't much seasoning flavor to the batter but it wasn't greasy to taste. The mushrooms seemed fresh. The dish was fairly good. The cocktail sauce had a decent amount of zip to it. My wife had the blackened fish tacos. Two came with the order. She loved the fresh taste. Definitely not a fishy taste. Delicious she said! I decided to try the Hoosier Hot Plate. It seemed like a house speciality...so why not! The tenderloin was outstanding! The pork was moist and juicy and moderately thin. The breading was nicely crunchy and moderately thick with a slight greasy taste. Maybe the best tenderloin I have ever had! The tenderloin was laid on top of a bed a real mashed potatoes. You could tell they were real by the lumps I bone smooth consistency. These were excellent as well. Just like mashed potatoes should be that were going to accent the meat. The tenderloin was topped with a creamed corn. I would have been disappointed if this creamed corn was the side dish. It was kind of bland and didn't have much of a corn taste. It was also rather mushy. I didn't think the corn added much taste to the tenderloin/mashed potato taste. Overall...it was an interesting dish that was worth a try.

Our drink order was taken, which was almost all water. Drinks came several minutes later. Orders were taken a few minutes after that. Food did take a bit but not unreasonable. At that time a few people needed more water. It took over 10 minutes before a pitcher of water was delivered to the table by someone other than our server. Bread was requested to the person bringing the water since we hadn't seen our server in nearly 15 minutes. Another 10 minutes and our server comes to check on us. She stated she didn't know about the lack of bread and blamed it on the other employee not telling her. At least another 10 minutes go by and nearly everyone is finished eating when the bread arrives. The food was good and the amount of food was good. All but me had eaten there before. 3 got the Hoosier plate, a couple had the tenderloin, a couple got burgers, and I got the Makers beef tips. All enjoyed their food and only a couple had any left to take home. The mashed potatoes were very good and a large portion. There were several ounces of meat and a good portion of green beans. The food was definitely a 4+. The service was a 2 at best. Along with the poor service, they added the optional 20% gratuity, since we had a party of 8. I knew this was possible since I read it on the menu. Most of the party did not. It was noted on the ticket but it was put very close to the other charges. For some, it was not noticeable. I understand the reasoning behind the charge but if the business isn't crowded and the servers aren't working excessively, I don't believe it's justified. In this instance, it may have led to poorer service since the server knew she'd be getting 20% no matter what.

On the north wall, student artists (2018) contributed small murals that fill in where windows used to be found in the wall face. One of the pieces includes local muralist Tanner Fernung's character from the animated movie "Up!". On the south wall are larger murals. There are two historic composites of the downtown area done by a local photographer. There is also a pair of giant angel wings (again by Fernung) that are intended for "selfie" photos. However, Fernung is a big man (plays offensive lineman for Manchester University), so the wings and angelic crown are quite high and may require some trick photography to get the wings to line up with your body. The Alley adds a bright spot for locals and visitors to stop and enjoy the artwork and view of the courthouse. It also is a great way to support the local artistic talent in the community.
