My family and I have been coming to Nick's for years, and they are generally good. However, we got carryout a few days ago, and it was quite a different experience than we are used to.
We ordered food for carryout around 4:25 pm, and were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. I got to Nick's about 5, and the person working the carryout desk told me it would be ready shortly. I then proceeded to wait for 35 more minutes for my food, all the while watching unmasked, coughing guests be admitted, and sweltering in a ventilation system that was clearly not working anywhere near its best. Eventually, I waited outside in the ninety degree heat - it was still cooler than being inside!
When the order was finally ready, the carryout worker did go through the order, but she turned all the boxes away from me so I couldn't see what she was doing, and checked things off the receipt as she went. At the time, it seemed like no big deal, until...I got all the way back to 64th street, opened everything up, and found we were short one lobster tail.
I called up Nick's, and explained what happened - the hostess checked with the carryout worker, and the carryout worker immediately confirmed that she had missed our second tail. They offered to let me come pick up another tail, but by this point it just wasn't worth it - I asked for a refund for the second tail. The hostess told me that only the manager could handle this, and that the manager would contact me if they had any questions.
Meanwhile, the food itself was the WORST we had ever had from Nick's. Everything but the cream of crab soup was cold and tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a good while, the lobster tail we did get was overcooked and tough, and the cream of crab soup had so much sherry in it I might as well as have been drinking from the bottle.
About 24 hours later, I hadn't heard anything, so I contacted Nick's - I was responded to by Scott Heise, the owner. He didn't apologize for the carryout worker's error, but just said he would give me store credit for the mistake. After the awful meal we had, I doubted that we would go there again for a long while, if ever, so store credit is no use to me. I asked him why he couldn't give me a refund.
This is copied from his email to me: "We go over your order at the store specifically so we do not get to this point. But here we are. I dont know if it was in the box or not, frankly it really doesnt matter at this point in time, as there is no way to know for sure. I have kindly offered to give you a store credit to make you happy. Not certain why that is a problem." This was obviously very disappointing - that definitely sealed the deal that we won't go there again.
