This is a good, solid, 3.5 star roast beef sandwich joint. I came here because 1. I live in Beverly and 2. People magazine said it was the best sandwich in Massachusetts. FALSE. It's the best ROAST BEEF sandwich in Beverly, maybe Bev/Salem. But it is NOT the best sandwich in Massachusetts, let alone north shore, shit, not even Beverly. With the advent of Flip the Bird and their chicken sandwiches, there isn't a better sandwich of any style in town. Although, I'll give honorable mention to the grilled shwarma wraps at Back East. Also, the tortas (Mexican pressed "panini" style sammies for you newbies) at La Victoria Taqueria are much better than the simple roast beef sandwiches at Nick's. And if you want a more traditional "American" sandwich, I can think of like 5 in Boston alone that are much better than Nick's. That being said, OF COURSE I'm going to Nick's if I get the hankering for a roast beef sammy. People magazine can take a rip off the big stick. read more

Kind of bland not much flavor to much mayo, maybe the house sauce would have been a better choice. Onion rings were made pretty fresh also not very flavorful. Clean place staff is working hard at this place lots of traffic in this place so something here must be good. First had Nick's maybe five or six years ago. Remembered it being good so had it on my list to visit when I was back on the North Shore. Did not disappoint. You just can't get roast beef like this anywhere else! A regional delight! Did a large beef with sauce and mayo, with horseradish on the side. Phenomenal. Soft, pillowy bun; beef cooked just right and piled on nicely; and good ratio of sauce and toppings to sandwich. And that creamy horseradish? Near perfection. Did an order of fries, too but next time I'd skip on those. Brother got super beef three way on onion roll with tomato and horseradish plus side of mozzarella sticks. The mozz sticks (which he happily shared) were the real mvp to the meal-- very, very good. At the end of the day, you really can't go wrong. They do a booming business, move quick, and dish out good, quality sandwiches. My say? Nick's is known as one of the best for a reason, go get some and enjoy! read more

Placed a phone order and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. If you don't know you now have to wait in line to pickup take out orders. Waited in line for another 10 minutes to find out that my order plus 6 other phone orders were still hand written on the counter and not even given to the kitchen staff yet. They apologized and started to "ring" my order in but they couldn't even read the hand written phone order so I told them what I ordered again. 5 minutes later my sandwich comes out and sits on the counter, they forgot about the rest of the order and 10 minutes later the rest of the order comes out. They apologized but let me leave with a soggy mess of a sandwich 45 minutes later. Nick's really needs to get with the times, who still does takeout orders over the phone and hand writes them down? There have been plenty of restaurants that have nailed the takeout experience during Covid with the help of online apps, Nick's is not one of them. read more

Just started working in Beverly and trying to find a couple of good lunch spots. Decided to go with Nick's because of the really good Yelp ratings. Only a couple of other times have I been so misled by Yelp ratings. I decided to try a roast beef plate because I like to experience a couple of different things in my first visit to a new place and the plate offers a sandwich, fries, onion rings and salad. A nice mix of items to try I thought. I got my order to go so I could head back to the office and get a little work done while I'm eating. I thought it was odd that I only had one box (remember I have a bunch of hot food and a salad). Sure enough I get back and open the box and half of the salad is warmed up to fry level. Another thing that jumps out at me is that my ratio of fries to salad is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or maybe 15:1. Now, I'm not saying there was no salad, in fact it was probably an okay amount given that I had a roast beef sandwich, fries and onion rings too, but there were enough fries to feed another 3 or 4 people. The onion ring order was quite large too. Now, normally you might say this isn't such a bad thing, who doesn't like getting a lot of food for their money, but the problem was that the fries were "meh" at best and the onion rings (of which there was also a good size portion) were nothing to write home about either. Even if I had thoroughly enjoyed them, there were far too many for one person to eat as part of this meal and since I didn't thoroughly enjoy them, there's easily a pound of fried food sitting in my office garbage as I type this. Finally, the roast beef sandwich. Full disclosure, roast beef sandwiches don't get me excited the way an Indian buffet, falafel, rack of lamb, chile relleno, a juicy burger or even a chicken parm sandwich does, but I decided to get it because it is their specialty after all and I certainly don't dislike roast beef. All that said, the sandwich was uninspired to say the least. The sauce was bland and the bun tasted like something you can get from the bargain bin at the grocery store (bread aisle, not even deli!). Oh, actually two more things, it's located awkwardly on a corner with a light and it was a pain in the butt to get out of the parking lot and they only accept cash. I don't plan on going back here again, and I would warn you that I have no idea how they managed a 4.5 star Yelp rating on so many reviews. People must really love roast beef in Beverly or something. read more

I heard good things about this roast beef place through the years but never ventured out of my way to get here until today ... This is a small roast beef establishment not too far off of Rt. 128 in Beverly. While parking has alot to be desired, the menu was more than adequate for a roast beef establishment. One of the things that I liked was that they offer a "roast beef plate". This included fries, onion rings a large roast beef sandwich and a salad. The roast beef sandwich had a toasted bun - a good start. They loaded the plate with shoestring fries and included a reasonable amount of onion rings. All of these things were much appreciated! The shoe string fries had a nice crisp taste - I usually like thicker cut fries but they must clean their oil frequently because as I got to the end, I really craved more. The onion rings also were crisp but I probably wouldn't order them separately if I had to do it based on this being just okay. The salad seemed to be there to make you feel better about getting some greens or veggies while you pigged out on roast beef and fried food :) The roast beef sandwich itself was okay - while good in texture and thickness, there wasn't a true beefy and savory taste. I intentionally asked for the horseradish, bbq sauce and mayo to be on the side so I could taste the naked roast beef. I then put the condiments on. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad but it also wasn't so good that I would drive to Beverly just to grab a roast beef sandwich from this establishment. The staff was very nice and the place was clean. Everyone has there preference - just like some people like Greek Pizzerias and others like Italian Pizzerias. I personally like Harrison's Roast Beef over Nick's Roast Beef. Nothing wrong with that - just don't set your expectations unrealistically if you visit this place like I did ... read more

I understand! I mean, this is the best freshly sliced roast beef I've ever tasted. So tender and rare, it melts in your mouth. But a boon to the North Shore, to be sure. I can't say anything about the menu other than the roast beef sandwiches and french fries, since that's all I get. Usually more than one in each order, so I can have another sandwich later. But the roast beef sandwich is perfect. And there aren't many perfect things in this world. This was a good sandwich, loads of meat with a slice of cheese on a toasted bun. Ordered the roast beef plate, which was way too much food. Held my on though. Plate consists of your sandwich, onion rings and French fries along with a small garden salad. The onion rings are stringy and fried in a light batter.
