I can't say that I'm a convert becuase I never had anything against NeWorlDeli in the first place. "it's a deli that does a good Reuben? I'm in!" But they serve 'More than 1/2 a sandwich'. And that's really, really cool. It's actually 3/4 of a sandwich, and any other place would just give you - half a sandwich.
You know when you go to a cafe and order a cup of soup and half a sandwich, and you pay $8 for it, and it doesn't fill you up? And that's because it's really half a sandwich, a triangle of a sandwich? That doesn't happen here. When you order 'half a sandwich' they cut the 25% off of two pieces of bread and give you something filling.
My first experience at this deli, my former girlfriend ordered half an eggplant parmesan sandwich, and I ordered a rueben. Her sandwich came and was 7 inches long, and I was shocked. It came out in a typical red sandwich basket, and all I could think was "Man, they had to order especially long baskets for the full sized sandwiches. The world hunger problem is solved by this deli."
I had visions of an absurdly long and skinny eggplant parmesan sandwich dripping marinara sauce through the food basket and onto the table. And then I looked at the menu, and I saw that she hadn't ordered a 'half sandwich' but a 'more than half a sandwich'. And it was still enough for two reasonable people.
There's a great amount of attention paid to quality here, and not just of food but of service. One Friday afternoon, a friend was particularly hungry, and I got him to come here. Then a couple walked in, the owner told them they'd be his last customers, they then apologized for having invited a dozen friends over for a deli dinner, and the owner called up his reserves and cooked them lasagna. And then he gave me and my friend free food for the extra two minutes we had to wait for our food.
And - having gone there this evening and seen a sign that said 'Serving dinner specials Wed-Sun' he has decided to make a business out of serving dinner meals, any way. He's very in touch with the desires of his customer base.
The owner roasts his own roast beef (He's bragged about it to me, and it's great), makes his own soup, treats his customers like kings, and still finds the time to enforce excellent sandwich-making standards.
The ONLY thing I have against this place is their 'Sloppy Joe'. Here, it isn't a bunch of heavily seasoned ground beef on a soft bun. It's a triple-decker cold sandwich made of layers of rye bread, meat, cole slaw, and russian dressing. I tried one because I read an Austin Chronicle review hailing it as inimitable sandwich greatness, but I did not feel it. It was not for me.
But, seriously, everything else (tried them all) is fantastic. I especially like the pfft-half-sandwich and cup of soup deal served all day for $6.24. Oh and I didn't even get into the attention they pay to the bread...
But those are small potatoes. This place has decent prices ($6.24 for more than half a sandwich and a cup of soup, all day every day), excellent quality, and a legitimately gregarious owner. I've read that he is hesitant to consider a second location because he would not be able to oversee the quality of both delis as effectively.
And that's just fine, because I'll be within biking distance of this place for at least a year, and it's already become a once-a-week standard. read more
