We decided to pop in even after reading the reviews since we figured it would be a hit or miss. I would say it was a miss. Reviews were right. First impressions of the atmosphere was quiet and not busy at all and outdated. I ordered an orange juice which was not great and sour. If you know Minute Maid from a fountain machine, it's not great. Menu was enormous in choices so I wanted to select something super simple - I went with a plate of French toast deluxe. We order silver pancakes for our kids and everything seemed like frozen food but reheated. Tasteless and bland. Our order came through and you can see the pictures. Two big slices of tasteless French toast pieces along with a heated up sausage circle, ham, and bacon. Potatoes we're fresh but again bland. It just was so bland. Overall, server was nice. But everything else fell short and met the bare minimum of a restaurant. So if you're contemplating.. choose another location, you'll probably get some more taste and flavor somewhere else. The sandwiches were okay, a teaspoon of coleslaw came with the sandwich, I. think they could use bigger cups and give you a little more. My favorite place for breakfast when I'm at the beach. New York Diner delivers every time, but I do order the same thing when I go there. Take that into consideration. I know they serve lunch also, but I've never eaten lunch there. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I ordered one egg over easy, corned beef hash and grits. So many people don't like grits but you have to know how to fix them up southern style. Add butter and lots of sugar into the grits and they are delicious. However, don't do this if you have shrimp and grits. My egg was beautiful and I wished I had gotten two. Mike got poached eggs and wished they had been a little runnier. My hubby and I drive by here many times and decided to give it a try for lunch. We arrived at about 1:15 and the place only had 1 other table. They close at 2:00, so I thought we have plenty if time. We ordered the Monte Cristo and a Philly Panini. They Philly Panini was pita bread that was put briefly on the grill to get the grill marks. If you are going to say you have Panini on the menu, they should be made with a panini maker. Had a little meat and was served with an ice cream scoop of a yellow blob of something. Next, the Monte Cristo. The sandwich was soggy, it was so disgusting. It had 1 piece of ham and cheese. It should be crispy not soggy. This also came with the yellow blob of what was supposed to be potato salad. I have never tasted something like this before and not sure how to describe it besides yellow blob of nasty. Now I know why there was only 1 table there. Also, when I asked the waitress for the check she gave it to me and stood there waiting for me to give her the money. I really wanna like this place but I just don't. First off being from NY, it's nothing like a NY diner. Secondly, the first time we went went there we arrived at15 minutes to closing but didn't realize it. So 15 minutes into our meal they started flashing the lights on and off! Super rude. I'm giving this two stars right off the bat due to the friendliness of the wait staff. I can't say that they are friendly at all I can say that it seems like they don't want the business or that you're bothering them. I'm asked to try a sample of their chicken salad and the waitress actually had to say that she had to go back and ask if you can give a sample taste. I ordered an omelette and the actually charged an extra $1.25 for cheese and $0.35 for rye toast. Manama didn't even say it all that good. I have come in here a few times by myself Android buddies of mine and I've always had this kind of service and for some reason. The owner sits at a certain table and does not get up to help even if help is needed. If there is a complaint you still just sit at that table does not get up. Visiting from New York, we thought it would be fun to stop in for a lunch on our last day in town. The service was beyond subpar. Not sure if we caught our waitress on a bad day or what, but she was absolutely miserable. To the point where she went to give my boyfriend his food, practically throwing the plates onto the table, and his food went flying off onto the booth. There were a few 'regulars' in the booth behind us, who we assumed were having friendly banter with her. It quickly became uncomfortable and full of tension in the restaurant as insults started flying and the owner came to ask what their problem was. All in all it was a strange and awkward lunch. The food was served and wow was not good sandwiches. The Ruben was very hot, yes it had been grilled but was hot as in microwave hot. Anyway, we decided we tried the place and would not return .. waste of money. The check came and we noticed .35 cents each for the bread. Tomato was .50 extra. I asked the waitress if that was listed on the menu and she confirmed it was. She stated that they use white bread, wheat or rye was .35 extra and they only put lettuce on sandwiches the tomato etc... was extra. First time visiting New York Diner and my late lunch was excellent! Waitstaff were friendly and food was not only delicious but it arrived hot, too. Just the way I like it. I'm giving them 2 stars in the hope that I caught them on a bad day; it was really a minus 10 star experience. We were extremely hungry and ordered full meals plus soup. My meal came with soup or salad. I told the waitress I wanted French onion soup. She said no, it's not French just regular onion. I therefore assumed they didn't have it, so I said fine I'll order salad! Then my husband ordered FRENCH onion soup. Before the waitress left I said "so you DO have French onion soup!" Yeah but he (the owner?) won't let you have it with the platter. I'll have to go ask him. She returns and says "he'll do it but it'll cost $2.50!" I ordered it and guess what? It was horrible! It had no flavor and very little cheese. I couldn't eat it! Then my eggplant parmigiana came. It was a mushy, tasteless mess with no parmigiana cheese in sight. Again, I couldn't eat it! I thought, well they couldn't mess up spaghetti! Guess what? I couldn't eat it! At first I was annoyed that there was so little spaghetti sauce but oh how I wished there was no sauce as it was the worst sauce I've ever tasted. My husband felt sorry for me and gave me a piece of his fried fish - again, couldn't eat it as it tasted nasty too. All that was left were Hubby's French fries and surprise, they were frozen fries with many unidentifiable flavors as if the grease in the fryer needed to be changed! For $40 including tip, I really enjoyed my 4 saltine crackers that came with the soup. It was no surprise that the waitress didn't ask why I didn't eat anything.
