Had a great dining experience at Philosophia last night. We opened with saganaki. Absolutely perfect! Then, I got the lemon chicken soup. Also delicious. Perfect level of acidity and even a little creamy. The main course was the pièce de résistance! I got the braised lamb shank and my girlfriend got the market fish (was supposed to be flounder, but there was NO WAY that was flounder. If it was, that was the fattest flounder ever. Regardless, it was tasty. She also got wine: Omicron white (a Greek variety). At $11 / glass, it was a great deal. She loved it. We sat at the bar and had the pleasure of being served by James, the bartender. Super nice guy. Very engaging and always helpful / timely. Had a quick dinner there during my visit to Charleston. I originally planned to go to Stella's but several items on their menu attracted me; plus it was very close to my hotel. Unfortunately most dishes I ordered were disappointing. I got the Spanakopita, Keftedes (beef meatballs), and side of Roasted beets. I also asked for a side of pita. It was my second time to have Spanakopita in my life. Theirs had a gorgeous presentation, looking like a huge piece of cake sitting above breadcrumbles and greens (arugula+dill). The pie had lots of layers of phyllo from crispy outside to moist and cheesy (? inside. According to my server, the filling was spinach and a blend of cheeses including kasseri, Parmesan etc. I wish there could be more filling and fewer layers of phyllo. The Keftedes came in six, about 7oz in total (cooked weight). These meatballs were lightly fried, thus a bit crispy outside. Instead of tomato-based sauce, they were served with beurre blanc. While these were interesting, this dish turned out to be extremely salty for me, even if I was starving I could not finish all of them... Unexpectedly the Roasted beets was the best lol. It was the first time that I got HOT roasted beets and they did tasted fresh! Plus it was not salty at all -- it just tasted sweet, earthy and juicy. It also had a crazy portion size -- I guess there were about 1lb of beets! Pita was dry and cheap, tasted like what you could get from a grocery store. This place was the yummiest!! They were open on Christmas Eve, and we were in town, so we stopped in. It's in a little strip mall, so parking is very easy and plentiful. The space is pretty with lots of flowers, and there's a patio for nice days. Plus heaters when it's in between! We sat at the bar and the menu was pre fixe. The bar tender was a gem, we could've chatted all night. Service was good, our food came out promptly, and drinks were made in front of us. The food here is fantastic! Three of us split the Mezze Lunch which is your choice of three appetizers. We had calamari, zucchini fritters, and octopus. I would get all of those again just for myself if I could. The hummus with the octopus was delicious as was the tzatziki with the fritters. For my main, I had the quinoa and burrata salad and added local shrimp. After the heavier apps, the salad was nice and light. My lunch mates both had the lamb gyro and were highly complimentary as well. Plenty of parking with indoor and outdoor seating. Will have to come back for dinner soon! read more

Stopped in here with my mom on a Friday during their happy hour. Had truely some of the best wine and apps for such an amazing price. We had the flatbread sliders and the buffalo cauliflower. This was our first visit and last. We love Greek food, we've traveled to Greece and have always sought out Greek restaurants wherever we go. While our waiter Alexander was lovely, our food was obviously stale and old. Was it because it was a Monday? The pork on my gyro, the lamb on my husband's gyro were both crisp to the point of being burnt (some was black) with absolutely no good taste to the meat at all. I felt slightly sick hours later. I would guess it was left over from Sunday. Our french fries were cold. My side salad was soggy as can be, soggy wet horrible. The only thing that was good was the avgolemono soup. I think the cook clearly didn't care what he served us today. Even the pita bread wasn't warm or fresh. And the order of hummus is small. What a waste of money. $65. I wrote the owners/managers but got no reply. I think this place will remain popular because a lot of people don't care or haven't had really good Greek food. read more

The bustling kitchen and small footprint being placed in the corner by the bathroom could have been a busy bit the food and service more than made up for it. Many different options for carnivores, vegetarians and omnivores alike. They also offered a tasting menu on the Tuesday that we went. What a delightful spot! We met here for book club and had an excellent experience. Parking is pretty easy but you may have a little walk. Their patio is super cute and perfect for cooler weather days. Inside is smaller but they can fit a good amount without getting loud or crowded feeling. The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating with our larger group. We were checked in on frequently and all questions answered quickly. The food was excellent. We made sure to try their Mezzi Dish, which came with 3-different dipping options (you can choose from many options) and a side. You can't go wrong with the fried zucchini, so tasty! For the main we tried the pan seared Salmon, it was grilled to perfection and was served on a butternut squash with couscous, shaved Brussels sprouts and mushrooms, SO good. I have food restrictions and the first time I came, the chef came out personally to let me know what I could eat and what they could modify because the server was so new, she wasn't sure. I was really impressed with that and felt super taken care of. The second time we did happy hour at the bar- great food, great service, and prices. The third time, we brought family that also has food restrictions, and the staff and kitchen were nothing short of outstanding. They were all so kind, so accommodating, and the food and beverages were great. Food restrictions can make dining out pretty disappointing frequently, and when I have not one, but many experiences that have been outstanding, it's worth sharing. Generous portion and very tasty. * Roasted Oysters - oysters roasted and topped with Spanakopita, and a very rich Lemon Buerre Blanc. It's fried cheese, so of course it was good! * Dirty Martini - they have a little twist on their dirty martini as its made with kalamata olives instead of your standard green olives. Overall: Near 5-star experience brought down by a likely off night service-wise. The good: Fantastic food with very few blemishes. We split a handful of apps, with the standouts being the tyropita, spanakopita, and of course saganaki. The octopus was also great, but those others felt more authentic and flavorful in comparison. Atmosphere is Greek-ish on the inside and cozy patio on the outside, and heating lamps for chilly nights. The not-so-good: Service was extremely slow, especially for a Tuesday night. The place was surprisingly full both inside and out, so maybe they were understaffed, but we had to wait far too long throughout our entire experience. I came here on tasting Tuesday and they had a great menu option for three coarse meal for under $40. You could also do an option for food tasting and wine tasting for an up charge. I chose not to go with the tasting menu and instead do a bunch of different appetizers. All the portions were pretty large! The spread Trio was delicious and the winner by far was the tzatziki spread. We sat outside and the ambience was great! Definitely made me feel like I needed an aperol spritz, and I was on the coast of Greece. So I had high hopes for this restaurant. However once it started it just went down got the front side table for 2 which is completely awkward seating which produced a terrible environment. The waitress was not good and rude didn't check how food was or experience. Probably the only time I've ever had to go from a restaurant and go to the Whole Foods to get more food because the portions are very small especially the salmon my wife got. I got seafood orzo dish which tasted good the main reason I gave it a 2 star instead of a 1. Unfortunately the poor service and environment with small portions completely outweighed everything and felt like a waste of 70 dollars. Friends invited me to a Tuesday night 3-course dinner with wine pairing here. Where else in Mount Pleasant will you get three full courses with wine for each course for $56? Yeah, probably nowhere which is why they were so busy. We luckily had a reservation, so we were quickly seated, and the delights began, one after another. First, let me say that despite being there for the 3-course, none of us ordered it. I think each of us is so adventurous, we wanted one of everything from the menu. Crazy, but yeah, we did. I ordered the hummus for the entire table, and we shared. It was just enough for three people; maybe it would be just right for two. We enjoyed this with wine while our orders were prepared. Normally, I would not order something I could get anywhere, so the Spanakopita was NOT on my radar when I initially perused the menu. But it seemed like a meal paired with the YiaYia potatoes and a salad. I wasn't wrong and it did not disappoint. This venue is the older sibling to Taverna Philosophia just down the road, also 5 stars in my opinion. I can think of nowhere in Mount Pleasant that rivals these two restaurants for both price and high quality. If you enjoy Greek food and are considering a visit, plan ahead - make a reservation. The venue is small, so even a party of two can be difficult to seat because this place is so popular. I did see food being served at the bar, but again, it was small, and stools appeared limited. They do offer outside seating which is nice despite overlooking the parking lot. They have gone to great lengths to dress it up and it is nice. It is also outfitted with heaters. Philosophia is a great addition to the Charleston food scene! I was skeptical upon its authenticity after my vacation to Greece but wanted to give it a try. The inside is welcoming and decorated cute with the typical Grecian color scheme of blue and white. The restroom was clean. I chose to sit on the outdoor patio to people watch and enjoy the cooler weather. The drink menu is diverse with a variety of wines and cocktails. The menu had traditional favorites and I ordered the Greek salad and taziki sauce with pita. The Greek salad was fresh and delicious with a huge chunk of cheese on top. It was fairly big so I took it home for lunch the next day. The pita was warm and soft- as it should be. Service is always helpful and friendly! read more

I made a mistake...I accidentally ended up here after making a wrong turn in Charleston and driving over the bridge...there was a huge accident in the other direction, I knew I couldn't just turn around on the other side and come back - this was going to take a while. After a little tour at Patriots Point and finding the field where the Battery play, I was hungry and figured I'd find the best place nearby and took a chance with Greek. In Charleston. Well, Mount Pleasant. And it surpassed pleasant in so many ways. I took a seat at the bar, ordered some wine, read through the menu and quickly decided on the 3 course dinner special. Spanakopita, which was super fantastic, the branzino which I totally devoured and loved and then amazing dessert, yogurt custard parfait... WHAT?!?! It was beautiful. And so yumm-O! Oh! And the limoncello WOAH! All in all, I spent probably 2 hours here and the service was spectacular as well... it has been a couple months since I was in, I cannot recall the gentleman's name who took care of me all night.... Keftedes was a bit more dry, and I don't think I even noticed a dill beurre blanc. One for the win was their Pastitsio; creamy and flavorful. Cocktails were very weak.....Our server seemed new and unsure of herself but she was wonderful! We booked an outdoor table and were able to sit in the shade right outside the front door -- although their patio looked super comfy, we weren't prepared for direct sun. Bring a hat and you'll be fine! I ordered the Kyrios Bourbon Smash and was able to sip it throughout the meal, along with a full bottle of water. My group decided to stick with the small plates so we could try more options. We ordered the burrata&beet salad, kolokithokeftedes (fried zucchini), saganaki (flambeed cheese with pita), spanakorizo (spinach&feta risotto cakes), Greek salad, and then the staff brought over a complimentary spanakopita. Our server was attentive and friendly without being overbearing. The manager (owner?) stopped by twice to check on us and I could see that he was checking on all of the tables. The staff seemed to all work well together, keeping our water bottle full and quickly removing any discarded plates. It was perfect weather, wonderful company, and a delicious meal. FABULOUS! Oh how I enjoyed this place!!! Everything was phenomenal:) First of all, the service. On point! Courteous and respectful. We had a dashing young man who was polite and saw to our every need. He gave us pointers on what to order, checked if I could swap a side (not normally done) and arranged for a fabulous mocktail. Sigh. The food was yum. We started off with the flaming cheese saganaki. This was served with a basket of pita bread. My entree was the WHOLE BRANZINO which was served on a wooden platter. This was an entire fish with the head on, bone-in and char-grilled with spices bedazzling the crunchy skin. I had this with the Greek potatoes which were incredible. My date had the KAKAVIA, a unique dish of shrimp, squid, salmon, clams, and mussels in a light lemon and tomato broth over fresh Greek pasta. Everything was spectacular; so very flavorful and beautifully presented. We rounded the evening off with the berry and fig panacotta. This place is wonderful and I'm so happy it's in a great with easy parking. The restaurant can be a little tight, and it's quite loud, but that's part of the robust culture of Greece. Embrace it!
