Parking may be a challenge but there is a line of stalls on Cooke St outside of Imperial Plaza as well as other stalls further down Kawaihao St. This place gets busy during lunch so do not hesitate to call in your order. Food is tasty and decently priced! Chopped steak is good - cheap steak, bell peppers, onions, and celery all stir-fried together with a nice sweet, salty sauce. Saimin is pretty generous for $4.25! And the noodles they use are the standard, curly ones - they're the "min" noodles - thin and long. I really enjoy their saimin. Broth can be a little bland so just add some shoyu or preferred sauce. Healthy garlic ahi plate is very filling and pretty tasty. If you like garlic, you will like the garlic ahi! Other dishes I've heard feedback on include Fried chicken wings, cold ginger chicken, hamburger steak, and loco moco. Fried chicken wings are very generous and told to be very tasty. Cold ginger chicken is extremely generous and they are also generous with the ginger! Hamburger steak (mini) is quite a good amount for the price and is told to have tasty sauce. Mac salad is alright, nothing special. Prices are decent. I'd say, they're pretty generous for their prices. The minis can fill you up quite a bit. The main lady who takes your order is quick and efficient. The other lady worker got our orders mixed up a few times but nothing too major. Staff overall is fast and efficient! This has been my go-to place whenever I am craving for some local hawaii bbq plate lunches when I am at work in town. I have been a customer since my dad took me here since I was probably in middle school. It had been through changes through out the years but the food has been still pretty reasonably huge despite price inflation. New Queens BBQ is similar to L&L or Loco Moco and they cater a lot to the near-by offices/construction workers. The place can be very busy during lunch rush (12ish) and witness a line from the inside all the way out the door. People are waiting outside for their food since there is no space inside. This place can be found on the corner of Queens St. and Cooke Street (can't miss). Pros: -The prices here for plate lunches are reasonable for the portion they offer compared to the other plate lunches in downtown Honolulu -Takes cash, credit/debit cards ($5 minimu. -Decent customer service now compared to a few years back. Always greeting and thanking the customers for their patronage. Recently, I just got my order and wanted to tie my bag before I walked back to my office but I needed a table to place my lunch on top. Cashier was concerned if my order was wrong but nothing was wrong. But it should that they care about the quality of food that is being brought out of the kitchen. Also, when placing an order, the cashier will always picks up the phone and you are never left waiting for someone to pick up. -Receipts available on request (let cashier know or you will not get any. Recommended to request if you are making debit/credit card purchases) -My 1st personal favorite/recommendation is the Chicken Katsu Curry (Regular/Mini). Fills you up better than the other plate lunch establishments on Bishop/Alakea where a regular plate looks like a mini plate and a half. -My 2nd recommendation is the Mix Plate for $9.99 (cheaper than other places) for the same amount of food you are getting. This plate consist of 1 hamburger patty, 1 big slice of teri beef, and your choice of either chili, beef curry, or beef stew. The hamburger patty is home made and very tasty, the teri beef is well-marinated and can taste the teriyaki flavor, and the beef inside both the curry/stew is tender and melts in your mouth. I never tried the chili but I will try on my next visit. Definitely recommended to try out if you want a variety of food to try out. -3rd Recommendation: Fried Chicken plate. Big thighs, crispy skin, juicy, and its tastier than Zippy's. Cons: -Unfortunately, there is only street parking (meter) unless you are taking the bus (bus stop pretty close by) or walking from the office/home. -The walk from the office to New Queen Barbecue can seem to be far. To save time during your lunch break, you can just call their number and place your order in advance. By the time you are at New Queens, your lunch will be ready and all you need to do is pay/pick up. -Brown rice is offered but charge is extra (per scoop) -Substitution for french fries instead of rice is also extra. I'm slowly exploring the eateries around my new office building. My co-worker gave me the "ins" about a breakfast plate for only $4.75. Yep, $4.75. Thinking it was too good to be true, I walked over to New Queen Barbeque which is right on the corner Queen and Cooke Street. For $4.75 you get a bed of white rice, 2 large eggs cooked how you want, and one choice of meat. They also have a combo plate for a little over $5 where you get assorted meats. I got my eggs over easy and chose bacon for my meat. Minimum $5 order to use credit card. With only two people waiting for take out in front of me, I was in and out under 7 minutes. They provided fork, napkin, ketchup and shoyu packets, although I did see a help-yourself area for more napkins, knives, black pepper, and all other essentials. Back at my office I popped open the styrofoam container to find 2 rather greasy eggs and somewhat-crunchy bacon on a dry bed of rice. I patted down my bacon with napkins but it didn't do much. My eggs were watery/oily to my dismay and although they gave choke rice, the quality just wasn't there for me. I would've preferred the eggs not fried in heavy oil and the bacon dry racked before plated but you get what you pay for. I ended up only finishing 3/4 of the breakfast plate and suffered for it as my acid reflux flared up. The service is friendly, fast, and the breakfast plate is LARGE and CHEAP, so if you aren't suffering from acid reflux like me I think this place is a major deal as far as breakfast goes! read more

Prices have gone up recently but that's expected in the current economy. I usually call my order in to pick up and most of the time it's ready when I get there. They can get busy around lunch time. Finally figured out where this place was and it's not too far from my workplace. That's already a plus! I had to really think about what I wanted beforehand since I'm such an indecisive eater. So with the help of yelp I figured I'd get a local favorite, the hamburger steak (mini). It was relatively clean and neat. It's a cute little mom and pop-like place but their service was crazy fast! Located at the Diamond Head mauka corner of Cooke and Queen Streets, New Queen's Barbevue is a small establishment with several small tables inside if you wish to dine in, but more of a take-out joint. Lots of workmen are lined up for take-out, so it must either be good or they must give lots of food... I chose the mini loco moco, which is one egg over easy on top of a hamburger patty on white rice, smothered in gravy. My mini had cold, tasty mac salad in additiion to the loco moco. When I opened the clamshell, my loco moco was smothered in a light, beige colored gravy instead of the usual dark brown gravy - chicken gravy vs meat gravy? Oh no! Does this mean that the loco moco is going to taste weird?! Not to worry! It was hot, delicious, and satisfying and gone in minutes! This place is usually in my rotation of lunch spots in town, and I've been pretty satisfied by their plate lunches for a few years. However, I got the beef stew & crab rangoon late last week... and it was horrific. The crab rangoon was inedible because the filling had no flavor or cream cheese and was a weird orange color. The beef stew tasted like they took the carrot, potato and beef from another batch of stew and plopped it into tomato sauce and cooked it. It was sweet and tangy, not savory like beef stew should be! It was also an orange/reddish color, not the usual brown. I fear this place is becoming like many other restaurants in town: skimp as much as possible on food/ingredients to save money to pay the now astronomical rent prices. My office did a sizable take out order of plate lunches and burgers. I got the regular garlic chicken and trying to eat healthy, I wanted to substitute the mac salad (which isn't actually salad!) for actual tossed salad. The food was ready when my coworkers went to pick it up. Parking is bad around the location. So hungry me grabs what I THINK is a garlic chicken plate lunch with two scoops of rice and tossed salad. What hungry me ACTUALLY got was a garlic chicken plate lunch with a bed of shredded cabbage and lettuce, no dressing, no rice. Yes you heard me, plate lunch garlic chicken NO RICE, NO RICE! What a culinary travesty. Now, I'm half thinking, "who called this order in?!" but my coworker yells, "where's the extra stuff on my burger!?" She had ordered the deluxe but got the regular burger. Now, we try not to hire idiots, but sometimes we're all idiots. But TWO orders messed up? That ain't my office. Someone at Queen's screwed that up. We check our bill and they didn't charge us for the deluxe, but you know how ordering out can lead to anticipation. Anyway, my garlic chicken was maybe a 6.5 out of 10, not that crispy or flavorful, but a solid amount of chicken. It looks like Queen's subscribes to the "quantity over quality" mantra. I like the fact that it is not drowning in adobo sauce, but it's made the way my Daddy makes it where it's literally made with it's own Pork Fat and see a lot of Peppercorns and Garlic and that's the way I like it so kudo's to those Chinese Cooks. Also, the Garlic Chicken is delicious as well. I will warn you, if you are eating this before you go to work, you will smell like a walking Garlic Bulb. The Garlic Chicken was crunchy and quite moist and not dry at all. I will tell you this, if you are a voracious eater, I would definitely suggest you order a full plate because the portions here are pretty huge so for you dainty eaters out there, I suggest you order a mini and it'll suit you just fine. New Queen's Bbq is the name now and not called Queen's Bbq. They do have four or five tables in the eatery but it can get pretty hot in there, and during lunch it can get pretty hectic considering they are very close to an industrial area with many auto body shops and warehouses are located. Parking can be quite challenge but there are quite a bit of metered parking along the side streets. And for a takeout place, it is actually pretty clean and not dingy or grimey like most hole in the wall places usually are. I have eaten at a lot of breakfast places all around the island, but I have to say the sole reason for me going to New Queen's Bbq is because of the Breakfast Combo. We saw this tiny hole-in-the-wall while visiting the Goodwill down the block and the employees there told us it was a 'good place'. So, we checked it out. The photos currently shown of the establishment look a lot different now. The place is very drab and ugly, with nothing on the walls and old ratty chairs/tables. Even the menu is scraps of paper, white board and other text telling you what they have. However, there is usually a long line out the door for orders and those eating inside. The menu ranges all over the place. A bit of Hawaii, Chinese, etc. I ordered 1/2 order of Orange Chicken for under $8. It was just 'ok'....with large scoop of rice. My husband ordered Garlic Ahi and he got a winner. A nice piece of fresh tuna fish, Mac salad and rice for under $9. It was delicious. They have about 6 types of canned drinks in a cold fridge as well. You order, and wait for your stuff to be made. Take it to go (which most do) or sit at a table and eat with little fanfare. We shared a table with a local (we are from the mainland) and talked story the whole time. This is NOT a fancy place, but one you would miss if you drove by. It IS a real hole-in-the-wall that the locals know about and open at 5 am for the Dock Workers (and other blue collar labor) in the area. My co-worker introduced me to New Queen's Chinese Restaurant. We were taking a late lunch and I was not really hungry so I opted for a fish sandwich. He twisted my arm and got me to upgrade to a deluxe fish sandwich while he ordered two burgers. The restaurant is very basic and clean. Our food came out fairly quickly and I was pleasantly surprised. It certainly didn't look like much-but my fish sandwich (I think it was mahi-mahi) actually tasted quite good! The owner is so very friendly! That's what first caught my attention. Maybe I was expect an Ah Lang experience. She knows my voice when I place an order, as soon as I walk in my order is bagged and ready to go. Almost every dish is well prepared and seasoned well. Except for the veal, typical frozen then reheated. I had the veal on my second visit, thankfully not my first, don't think I would have been back if it was. Their mini plates contain a lot of food. My favorites are the pork adobo, garlic chicken and mochiko chicken. I am NOT a fan of chicken. If it's bone in I'll leave and inch and a half around the bone (don't care for the vein or to see them). To say two of their chicken dishes are my favorites means a lot. Okay, straight off the bat, I should have gotten the superb deal of a breakfast - I think its $4.25 for rice, 2 eggs and bacon, sausage and spam (or something like that). This place has CRAB WON TONS made for Asians by Asians. (They are Chinese with the usual Chinese dishes thrown in the mix of local food). These Won Tons had something smooth on the inside with very little cheese taste, but super tasty. And it had veggies! Lots of it! and not like crunch or chewy. Everything was the same texture so you could tell between the two, but it was all so flavorful, creamy and crabby, with not so much cheese flavor. Throw that crispy won ton around it and I was taken. Someone who finally understands me! And you get 5 big ones for $4.25! I am planning my Sunday workday meals already! Warning: for you lactose intolerant Asians, I did not say that this did not have cheese, I said it was not as cheese tasting. I am not lactose intolerant so I have no way of identifying if there is dairy or not. The breakfast combo comes with so much meat, (bacon, spam, sausage) eggs and rice and it doesn't cost more than around $6. They have a good variety of food to choose from during breakfast hours as well as for lunch. Their food is cheap and they give you generous amounts of food, like I mentioned previously. The garlic chicken is great, though it is only a Friday special. Other items off the menu to try are the pork cutlet (but sometimes it takes a while longer to prepare and roast pork with gravy (I think this is a Friday special). Many of the mini plate are $4.25 - $4.75 which is a deal since they pile it up. This is probably one of my top ten places to get lunch when I'm in the area. I've ordered take out from here several times within the past year but I always get pretty much the same things, the pork chops, steak and onions, and lemon chicken... what can I say!? Old habits die hard! My bf and I enjoy the pork chops. It's always cooked nice and tender and it's also very tasty. Their lemon chicken isn't that bad, my only complaint would be the lemon sauce, it's not consistent. Some days the lemon sauce would be just the right amount of thickness and other days it would be watered down a lot! The sauce is very lemony when it's made right! The steak and onions is your typical dish. There's nothing fancy about it, I just like it because they kill it with onions and I really love onions! Note: It is now called New Queen's BBQ. Stopped here on a holiday around 11:30, so no waiting. Bus route 6 heading downtown literally stops at the front door. (Bus stop for 6 heading toward Ward/Ala Moana Center is kitty corner.) Remodeled not too long ago, the place looks clean. You can see them cooking. Lots of specials, lots of variety, likely something for everyone, even those on special diets. Inexpensive. Ordered regular cheeseburger and BBQ cheeseburger (BBQ sauce instead of ketchup and mustard). For 75 cents extra, I made the burgers deluxe (lettuce, tomato, huge onion slice,not just a few rings). Also got one order of fries (puffy, crinkle-cut) and an order of crispy gau gee (5 pieces). If you are looking for a gourmet or special burger, you'll be disappointed. Take it for what it is, a good, regular, local burger, and you'll enjoy it. The meat and bun were fresh, as were the toppings. Both the fries and gau gee were winners - hot and fresh, not oily or greasy. The oil was hot enough and clean, so the fries and gau gee tasted like they should, not fish or chicken or whatever else had just been fried. The gau gee was homemade and generously stuffed. BTW, they do take debit and cards for purchases $5 and over. (At the time I write this, the restaurant details on Yelp! say they don't.) My friend and I both gave the meal two thumbs-up. I've been coming here for 15+ years. They are consistent with their prices (ever so slightly raised for inflation), the food preparation, the food quality and the big plate quantity. Let me ask you this: Where else on Oahu can you buy a Regular Size "Lau Lau" Plate for $11USD and they give you TWO portions of Lau Lau? I'll tell you. NO WHERE. Let me add a second part to that question: "And where can you kindly request a Regular Size "Lau Lau" Plate for BREAKFAST and nicely ask for 4 Over Easy Eggs to be placed on your order for slightly more?" MmmHmm, that's right. NO WHERE ELSE. Their menu is solid. I have NOT eaten anything there that I did not like. Even their burgers are awesome, if you like old-school diner style and let's be honest, who doesn't? Their breakfast specials are incredible as well. Let me not fail to mention their their "Fried Chicken" that I also sometimes get for breakfast with a side order of "French Toast." FORK DROP.
