We chatted with a couple of store owners, and they all recommended Riverview as the place to eat. We had already made reservations there weeks before. We loved the town and enjoyed the afternoon; we highly recommend spending a sunny summer or fall day there. Now about the restaurant. We were given a very good table in a private corner so that we could talk freely without disruption. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We never felt rushed. The ambiance is not the feature here, but there are nice river views and outdoor dining. We sat inside. The food was very good, even if not what I consider haute cuisine. For the first course, I had the watermelon and feta salad; it was nice and refreshing, even if the watermelon was a bit old. For the main course, I had a pork chop with a potato croquette, and my wife had the fish. We both enjoyed our dinners. We finished with two desserts: bread pudding and a Peach melba. While the restaurant was busy and likely understaffed, there was little sense that anyone was actively monitoring tables. Given the restaurant's reputation for an extensive and thoughtfully curated wine list, it was surprising that no one on staff could offer meaningful guidance on how the bottles we were considering would compliment our dinner choices. As a result, we abandoned plans to order a bottle and instead settled for wine by the glass. There were also execution issues. An appetizer arrived incomplete (missing an item we had ordered), and the missing portion was delivered later without acknowledgement or apology for the error. My wife's pasta dish was undercooked -- not al dente, but noticeably underdone -- and lacked the depth of flavor we've come to expect here. What had me; was when the owner was telling us how she used to go bluefishing out of Shinnecock Bay with her father. When I lived near the sound and would also go out from sheepshead bay I'd be out at least twice a month.
