We've been coming to Cathryn's Tuscan Grill for many years and have considered it a reliable, higher-end dining experience, which is why this visit was so disappointing -- especially as our first time back after the recent renovation. The most noticeable issue was a consistent lack of attention throughout the evening. Service felt reactive rather than attentive; we repeatedly had to flag someone down just to place orders or get basic follow-up. While the restaurant was busy and likely understaffed, there was little sense that anyone was actively monitoring tables. Given the restaurant's reputation for an extensive and thoughtfully curated wine list, it was surprising that no one on staff could offer meaningful guidance on how the bottles we were considering would compliment our dinner choices. As a result, we abandoned plans to order a bottle and instead settled for wine by the glass. There were also execution issues. An appetizer arrived incomplete (missing an item we had ordered), and the missing portion was delivered later without acknowledgement or apology for the error. My wife's pasta dish was undercooked -- not al dente, but noticeably underdone -- and lacked the depth of flavor we've come to expect here. The experience ended on a similar note: dessert was not offered and we had to ask for the menu, which was left without a description of the "du jour" item on the menu. After another delay we decided against dessert and asked for the check, which was delivered without closing courtesy. We also noticed the glasses of wine on the bill were not the brands we had ordered; we chose not to pursue it, assuming the resulting total was "close enough". We understand that restaurants can have off nights, particularly during busy periods, staffing challenges, or resuming operations after being closed for renovation. However, this visit fell short in several fundamental ways: service, attention to detail, and food execution. It was disappointing enough that instead of lingering over dessert, we found ourselves stopping at Dairy Queen on the way home. We hope this was an outlier, as our past experiences have been much better. At this price point, expectations are higher. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local. We had 2 specials of the day - Homemade mushroom raviolis with sage/parmesan AND Burrata over butternut squash with pistachio pesto. Fantastic! Entrance is on the side of the restaurant. Opens at noon and came here for lunch. We ordered the soup of the day, lentil soup, special of the day cockles and spaghetti and the squid ink spaghetti with shrimp and lemon cream sauce. We also order the local beer on tap. Drove up to meet a friend. Unfortunately he was tied up with an emergency at work so I had to find a place to eat. I drove over to Cold Spring with the idea of going to La Bouchon but alas it was closed! Instead driving down Main Street I spy Cathryn's. It's like 9:25PM and I see that they're scheduled to close at 10. So in I go! I'm greeted so nicely and have my pick of a nice table in the front room. It's a quiet night. The table is in a warm cozy spot. Uncharacteristically I order a Prosecco. I really haven't been drinking. I quickly order the soup of the day,,,lentils. The house bread comes, it's light and delicious. The soup follows and it is just perfect. I also ordered the seared duck breast with seasonal vegetables broccolini and carrots with mashed potatoes. The duck follows the soup...it's a nice portion of sliced duck. With a delicious berry sauce. I eat slowly. Been following this method of chewing my food slowly and thoroughly. Towards the end of my dinner I engage a delightful couple at a nearby table. I find out it's Cathryn herself with her husband Mark. We talk Wall Street shop and about the new Archbishop in NYC. Mark has had an incredible career, and he gives me a thumbnail rundown, but I'd love to hear more! We exchange numbers and promise to keep in touch! Just a perfect serendipitous meeting! Perfect way to end my meal They explain that they'll be doing extensive renovations. New kitchen and relocating the bar up to this front room, so they'll be closing for some months. My girlfriend and I were super excited to have dinner here after a long hike. Unfortunately, we neglected to read the reviews which would have spared us from the abysmal experience that ensued. I'll foreshadow by saying that there could certainly be some truth to the reviews that call out poor service for patrons of color (like us). And the reviews calling out the bad food were completely true. Food: - "exotic mushrooms with prosciutto": the mushrooms were tasteless. Gf was in shock + denial. convinced they forgot to add the garlic cited in their ingredients. The portion size was tiny too. You'd think this was michelin star fine dining. - pappardelle with pulled rabbit: I had never tried rabbit before so my POV is that it's like chicken texture but worse because it's drier and tougher. I can't speak to the taste because there wasn't any. - white clam with spaghetti: better than the pappardelle but really tasted closer to something I'd make at home (I cook about once every 2 weeks). Service: - took 35 minutes to receive the final check and we had to ask twice. First time gf walked up to ask to pay since we needed to catch the train back. She was told curtly by the vest-man to sit back down. Vest-man then told the seated patrons next to him "that was extremely inappropriate". Second time we got the attention of a passing waiter who apologized and said it'd be out asap (took 15 more minutes). - the final bill given didn't include an itemized receipt. We had to make the train so had no choice but to pay quickly but it's really not a cool (or legal) move to make, especially since others note Cathryn's tendency to randomly upcharge bills. - read some reviews from other people of color saying they were the only ones to not receive a bread basket. Unfortunately it was the same for us. I just straight up asked for it, and the guy brought it out but left out the olive oil. The place looked really charming when we walked in and this elderly couple even told us they had a great meal as they left ( I now have trust issues with cold spring locals). clearly Cathryn's went some 180 degree path in the flavor and hospitality evolutionary fork in the road. We were looking forward to a night of good vibes but suffice to say we were kicking ourselves for not looking at the reviews before coming here! Stopped in for lunch for my birthday with a few friends. Restaurant was large and quiet, with a vintage vibe. Menu had lots of yummy entree options. Most of my party got pasta, and had good comments. There was a piece of ceramic in my pasta. I had a super loud crunch mid-way through my pasta. Everyone at the table looked up asking why my pasta was crunchy. Low and behold, it was a piece of ceramic. Outside of their fine China, I would not recommend this place. The food was nothing special for the hefty price you'll end up paying. Calamari was very fishy. Gnocchi tasted off as it didn't contain that normal chewy texture. Rigatoni was fine. If you stop by, definitely ask for some bread as their sourdough was the highlight. We asked our waiter for water and he seemed rather irked by the request. ~10 minutes went by and he never came back so I got the attention of another waiter to ask for water and before I could he ask he interrupted me saying he's super busy he'll be right back. Unfortunately, he never came back to ask. Our original waiter finally stopped by to where we asked for water and he said "oh you didn't have water out here?" He then walked a couple feet away and got us some more water. We later asked for bread and were met with a large angry side-eye. I don't know what was happening but it made us extremely uncomfortable to ask for the simplest of things. The patio was nice at least and perfect as the sun was setting. read more

Had a great first experience at Cathryn's Tuscan Grill with my friend. Definitely a nice romantic atmosphere and the food we got was amazing. The service was in a very timely manner we didn't have to wait long. Started with a delicious lentil soup and some bread then we split the Penne Con Gamberetti E Verdure penne pasta with shrimp, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, garlic, and evo but instead we got a pink sauce which we enjoyed very much and to top it off we indulged in a upside down pineapple cake and got vegan fig ice cream to top it off. Given this a 4 as we really liked our server who was busting her butt. Overall, wasn't super impressed with the food for the price. Atmosphere: - We didn't go inside but the outdoor seating area was lovely. Nestled with greenery, the outdoor dining experience was quite nice. Service: - As noted above, the service was very good. Our waitress was swamped and made sure to apologize for the delay. She appropriately made recommendations and answered all of our questions. Food: - The food was good with the best dish being the pasta with rabbit stew. We got the Burrata, ensalata Giorgio, mushroom pasta and pasta with rabbit. The Burrata was ok, not super flavorful and served over sweet potato which was an odd flavor combo. - The ensalata Giorgio was good however you had to search to find the endive. It was so small that it added zero flavor to the dish which is unfortunate as it would have added a layer of flavor complexity that would have made this dish a hot. - The pasta with mushroom was dry and needed more oil. - The pasta with rabbit was delicious. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE DESPITE HAVING A RESERVATION We were staying at a nearby inn, and the owner highly recommended Cathryn's Tuscan Grill, even making us a 7 PM reservation and emphasizing that reservations were absolutely necessary. When we arrived a bit early, another couple without reservation arrived just before us. The manager, Dan told us to wait. Then, four woman without reservations came in after us and were immediately seated. As we stood waiting by the open kitchen,we witnessed Dan loudly berating his kitchen staff about a mistake-completely unprofessional and uncomfortable to witness as a guest. Soon after, the couple who arrived ahead of us (also without a reservation) were seated. I reminded Dan that we had a reservation and he told me it"didn't matter"When I questioned that , he raised his voice and began yelling at me in front of the entire restaurant. It was shocking and humiliating. If it hadn't been raining and I hadn't been so hungry, I would have left. After the meal , once I'd had a chance to calm down I tried to explain to Dan how upsetting the situation was. He responded by repeating that walk-ins who arrive before get priority- even over confirmed reservation. No apology. No ownership of his behavior. This I was by far the rudest treatment I've ever experience from a restaurant manager.I will be letting the inn know about this as well, since they recommended the restaurant. This place is always my default when other restaurants in the area are packed and I don't want to wait. I have eaten here a few times. The food has always been mediocre and the service underwhelming. They don't feel welcoming. It was no exception when I came here recently. While waiting at another restaurant, I figured to check if they had any open tables as it was busy everywhere. I checked with a waitress and she asked if I wanted a table outside or inside. I responded that I'm not sure as I'll have to check with the rest of my party and return. As soon as she heard that, she quickly put away the menus and walked away. I said thanks and that I would be back. I never returned for good reason. She re-affirmed my impression of this place. Excellent experience. Did a day travel to the town from Manhattan. Looked for a dinner spot for the kids and us and this was it. They accepted credit card, they were kind and patient. The restaurant is very pretty, especially the outdoor seating, but it was a chilly day so we decided to sit indoors, at a lovely table next to the window. The server was lovely and very helpful. Two of us ordered the whole wheat pasta with exotic mushrooms, and one of us ordered the butternut squash ravioli. We all shared a very nice salad. Only criticism was that the pasta was a bit too al dente. We love al dente but this could have been cooked another minute or so. We brought many of our friends here to share dinner with, some of whom are gluten-sensitive, and they raved about the gluten-free bread and pasta. Husband and I were in Cold Springs for an extra day due to a wedding. We noticed that Cathryn's Tuscan Grill menu looked great and they had outdoor dining (dog friendly). Entrance is through the patio area and the owner/manager seated us immediately. He was very kind when I requested the corner outdoor table due to our dogs. My husband ordered linguini and clams and I ordered fettuccine ai fiori di zucchini. Both were excellent. Our waitress was quick and guided us well. I would highly recommend. It's like the waiter forgot the basics of merely greeting or saying "be with you in a moment." Then, she would disappear. Orders were wrong, too. Came here for dinner last weekend. Food - 4 / 5 We went straight for entrees as we were hungry and it seemed busy. I had the chicken dish with fontina cheese which I liked a lot and was very tasty but somewhat of an odd combination. Very moist chicken breast covered in a layer of cheese with some sauce similar to a jus. I really enjoyed the accompanying vegetables and the mashed potatoes were very good too. Drink - 4 / 5 had the canned Vermont cider which I enjoyed. Only cider choice on the drink menu. Did not try the wine. Service - 4 / 5 So first off our waiter was great. Very accommodating and was waiting a lot of tables. He was very responsive to our service and made sure that we were served quickly. We went at peak dinner rush hour (~5 PM in the fall) so just note the restaurant gets very busy at this time and be patient - they are doing their best. The parking is a bit tedious, there is only street parking. The atmosphere very modern and stylish. I came here in the winter but I hear the garden is lovely. Our server was very nice and quick to bring our food. The food was fantastic. The funghi misti con prosciutto appetizer was delicious. I think the star of the show was the hangar steak. I was skeptical at first, but the espresso demi-glaze sauce was killer. The steak was tender on the inside with a beautiful crust on the outside. Everyone else I was with enjoyed their food as well. Almost every negative review I have encountered was service related. I did not encounter any of these issues. The food is very good with a great drink/ wine selection. Our party of 3 came in after a day of hiking near Break Neck Ridge around 2pm. The outdoor spots were clearing up and we were told to wait that it would be a short wait and I think we got seated in 15-20min. In the back is a nested house with eclectic decorations! Our waiter came over with a smile and shared the specials of the day. Our orders came out shortly after ordering. I ordered the Pappardella all Uva a Coniglio ($24 pulled rabbit meat in a grape sauce). Unfortunately, there was nothing to write home about with the dish but I wanted to try it because of the rabbit. My friend was able to order one of the pastas in vegan. Cathryn's Tuscan Grill was our stop for dinner after a long hike! First off, the word "grill" in the name is a bit misleading. Second, the garden area is fantastic and drew us in. Third, Cathryn herself greeted us, and after what seemed like an eternity we were seated indoors (make sure to reserve if you want an outdoor spot). That being said, the service was good. Our food arrived faster than expected and the waitress was helpful, with Cathryn herself trying to be accommodating as the hostess. We both agreed the potato gnocchi was delicious! Even though I ordered it (obv with the intention of sharing) Rozena kept reaching from the other side of the table to grab my food :D The gnocchi has the right texture, and the lamb ragu has enough chunks of meat to keep us happy. I respect an establishment that makes their customers feel valued regardless of the circumstances. I walked in the restaurant to no host or acknowledgement from the employees walking past me at a clearly busy time which is completely understandable. Another person walks-in and gets helped before me, to which at this point, the host (maybe the owner) acknowledges I was first. I said table for one and she said they didn't even have a table for two at the moment besides the bar. Mind you, her attitude was less than excited to have another customer. I agreed to sit at the bar, no problem. There's one bartender, also clearly flustered and busy; it's lunchtime after all. No acknowledgment for a good 5 min. The host comes over and asks if she is swamped, employee responds, yes. Host asks another employee to help. This employee comes over. No acknowledgment for another 5 min. A couple is sat next to me aware that I had been there and communicates this to the employee. She still takes their order first after I asked a question about the soup of the day. She makes their drinks, comes over to me and I gave her my order: a Margherita pizza. She says they are out and I said it was on the menu and appears to get irritated by this and repeats herself. I decided to leave not because they didn't have what I wanted but because the service was less than average. Maybe I'm biased having been in the service industry but it doesn't take much to communicate to your customers, "We will be right with you" or "thank you for the wait" "or, dang that pizza is so good but unfortunately we're out". I would have loved to try the food too! This is not a review to make anyone feel bad or that should reflect the establishment as a whole because the customers who sat next to me said the food is great and I believe it. However, I think the food is even better with quality service. I'll try again hopefully in the future! Update: Shame on me for not reading the reviews as I normally do. We took our daughter to this fine restaurant for her Birthday on Saturday, March 2. We had an incredible meal. The wait staff was extraordinary. The ambience makes you feel like you're in Florence, Italy. I had the spaghetti with cracked pepper; a main dish in Rome and it was as good, if not better, then the same dish I had in Rome. 10/10 every time. Food is consistently good, and the staff is the absolute best. Every time I go I leave fully and happy. Rudy, Emma, Dan, Cassidy, and Theresa are the nicest people and spark up good conversation. Cathryn, the owner, is always a pleasure to speak with and her home-made (yes, really home-made!) is the star of the whole place. It's like family there. Parking can be a hassle at times, but the food makes it so worth it. It's a quick walk up the road from the train station, and there are the cutest shops on the block. Definitely recommend for date night, casual dinner, or any other celebration, as they're super accommodating. read more
