Low quality food, for what I would expect from an indoor dining experience at an Italian restaurant. 1. squid appetizer: bland tasting, and my wife found a piece of plastic that she almost swallowed, in the food. 2. Bread: not fresh, not served warm or toasted. Olive oil it came with tasted like nothing... And no balsamic vinegar served with it by default. 3. Pappardelle w/ pulled rabbit meat - very hard, not tastey. Would never order it again in my life. 4. Linguine algebra - sandy due to dirt in the food! My best friend & I came to Cold Spring from NYC for a day trip on Saturday, Oct. 15th. After a great day exploring the town, we decided to have dinner at Cathryn's before heading home. It was chaotic from the start. When we arrived on the patio, there was a line of people formed at the hostess stand that stretched out the door. We joined the line & soon after the hostess (who we later learned is the owner) came outside, frazzled, asking each party how many people they had, whether they had a reservation or not, & if they preferred an inside or outside table. As we continued to wait our turn, other guests who had arrived after us tried to ask a waiter on the patio how long the wait would be. Without slowing down or even looking at them, he said "I can't help you!" & walked inside. The owner had tried seating another party of two who arrived after us first, but my friend had interjected & told the owner that we had arrived first. The owner said something to the effect of "Calm down. Everyone forgets sometimes," before seating us. The service was unbearably slow & unprofessional, but we were enjoying each other's company & didn't let it ruin our day. There was a table of two older couples to my left--they had gotten seated before us & were seated at least 15 minutes before getting water & probably 45 minutes before their orders were taken. We had ordered oysters as an appetizer. The woman who was a food runner brought them to our table, & as she sat the tray down, it tipped & the water from the melted ice under the oyster shells spilled in large puddle on my friend's side of the table. She didn't apologize or clean it up, but just sat the tray down as if nothing had happened. We had to ask her for silverware & napkins at this point. Our food was served & was actually very good. That's the only nice thing I can say about this experience. While we were eating our waitress went to the tables on both sides of ours to say there was a computer glitch & she needed to reconfirm what they had ordered. She came back a second time to the table of older couples to say "The chef said that the steak is too fatty to serve" & she proposed an alternative for them to order. When the waitress delivered our check, I looked at it & saw that in addition to our food & wine, she had added the entrees of the young couple at the table next to ours. When she came back, we politely pointed out the mistake, & she apologized & said she gave us the wrong bill (which wasn't exactly true--it was our bill plus the table next to us). In any case, she returned later with the corrected bill & told us the house was comping the two glasses of wine we had--a gesture which was both appropriate & appreciated. My friend & I each put our cards in the little tin box containing the check, & I went to the restroom (which was out of hand soap at both the beginning & the end of the meal). When I came back to the table, my friend was smiling. I asked what happened. She said the waitress brought the tin box back with only my card (not hers) & the entire bill had been charged to my card. We waited patiently for the waitress to come back so we could inform her of the mistake. After about 10 minutes, I said "I wonder where your card is. I really hope they didn't charge another table's bill to your card & give it back to them." My friend checked her online banking. That's exactly what had happened. There was a charge of $146 & some change to her card even though the entire balance of our meal had been charged to my card already. At this point, the laughing off of the mistakes we had done all night was over. The waitress was across the room, taking another table's order, but the owner was setting another table nearby. My friend walked up to her & said sternly, "My card was charged for another table's bill. I need my card & a refund right now." With this, the owner became belligerent. She snapped, "You're abusing my staff!" My friend then began yelling as she walked back to our table, "I want my card now! This is fraud." The owner yelled back "This isn't fraud; this is a mistake! You're abusing my staff." The table of older couples next to ours defended us: "She did not abuse your staff." The owner yelled for my friend to "Shut up!" & yelled to me "Is this the kind of woman you go out with?!" The waitress finally came & we explained the card mix up. She refunded my friend in cash & told her to cancel her card immediately (we assume another guest took it home). On the walk out, the owner said to me "Real nice girl you got there!" My friend told her to shut up. The owner yelled as we were walking out the door "You shut up! Stupid little c*nt!" My friend yelled back "You're a f*cking c*nt!" My friend & I apologized to the family with young kids on patio who had obviously heard the profanity. I will never go back there, & I will warn any friends who visit Cold Spring to stay away from Cathryn's as well. read more

During our weekend getaway from NYC we had dinner at Cathryn's on our first night in Cold Spring because the place was recommended. Food was so delicious! We ordered calamari which didn't look very appealing because we expected fried or grilled calamari but the first impression was definitely misleading. They were so tasty! Wow what an awful service experience. Never returning. We came in and the host very abruptly told us "no tables outdoors, only indoors" then ran off to do something else. Easy enough to forgive, things appeared busy enough. When she came back, we reminded her that she offered us a table indoors and we would like to take it. We were seated and never offered water, provided forks with no napkins or additional cutlery. Mind you EVERYONE ELSE IN THE RESTAURANT HAD NAPKINS AND CUTLERY AND WATER. No apologies or explanations came. I asked twice for a napkins and water and was finally given a paper napkin despite the fact that a group who came in after us received cloth napkins. We never got water. The food was fine. Price point was okay. But it's hard to accept that we were clearly deemed 2nd class citizens. So disrespectful. Please take your business elsewhere. We were looking for a restaurant to host my father in law's 80th surprise birthday party. My wife chose this one, unfortunately, as it was a disaster from the beginning. She left many messages for the owner, Cathryn, to call her back to make the arrangements. But Cathryn wouldn't call her back. It caused so much anxiety as my wife and her sister had 25 guests coming and they were left in a state of limbo. Do we need to find another location or not? We didn't know. Repeatedly, over the course of several months, (my wife likes to plan and be proactive-especially with a surprise party), Cathryn was incredibly unprofessional. Finally, when my wife was bringing the decorations in on the big day, Cathryn screams at her, "How dare you come into my restaurant and start rearranging things.... Who's going to move that table back!!!???" Of course, the table had been left for us to use. Her incredibly asinine and borderline psychotic approach was dispensed in full force in front of my daughter, whose mouth was agape that someone would speak to her mother that way. She looked like she wanted to cry. When I walked over, Cathryn again yelled very loudly at me, "Who's going to move that table back!!??" Keep in mind, I had NEVER spoken to this woman in my life and had no idea what she was talking about. Cathryn went on to snap at me, saying, "She called me 17 times and is micromanaging everything" (an extreme exaggeration) as well as hurling some other insults about my wife's handling of the party planning. It was all I could do not to hit her. Did she really think I would be okay with her hurling vile insults about my wife? I responded that maybe if she had returned at least one of my wife's calls, we wouldn't have had to call her back so much. She must have picked up on the anger in my voice because she slinked away. The food was good and, I have to say, the service was very good. The staff seemed to go out of their way to make up for their boss's nastiness; every person we came into contact with on the staff seemed truly embarrassed by their boss's attitude, and they looked quite experienced at having to defend her insufferable behavior. Judging by other reviews, the owner is just a nasty, miserable person and I would strongly recommend to anyone considering this place as a venue or simply an eatery, to avoid it at all costs. Ignore that haters here and give Cathryn's a try if in town and looking for a nice place to eat dinner. KInd of an upscale looking restaurant, clean, with plenty of seating and cool art on the walls. During nice weather there is even some outside courtyard seating. Even though we did not have a reservation we ended up getting a table after a short wait. After a long day trip here in Cold Spring it was actually a good choice to sit on the couches by the lounge area and enjoy a glass of wine. Oh, and they pour a full glass here too, not the half glass crap that many places offer when it comes to wine. A win. Food was tasty, portions were solid, and prices were fair for what we received but maybe a bit pricey for some. Polenta with sausage, rigatoni in brandied cream sauce, and penne with shrimp were all prepared well. Not a drop was left on any plate. The service here was terrific as our waiter was more than attentive and offered good advice on the menu options. Also, we met the owner who chatted with us a bit and seemed pretty nice. We come here every time we end a hike... and it appears it has become a tradition, not only with my boyfriend and me, but also with a few friends in our hiking circles. We come with our sweaty clothes and dirty gear... and they welcome us warmly, as they do with everyone. The entire staff is great! We come for Raphael... and the poetic way he delivers the specials. We like to point at random items on the menu just to hear him pronounce it for us. We come for the food... and although we have our go-to dishes, we can say from what we've had, they're frickin' good! My BF's go-to is the rigatoni with sausage and peas. I switch off between the squid ink linguine with shrimp and the pappardelle with rabbit meat, but I can also vouch for the calf liver and duck dishes. Honestly, we've never been disappointed. I may have tried some items that didn't suit my palate (items not mentioned here), but I still cleaned the plates! There has never been any food left behind when we come here...NEVER! Imaginative salads (Insalate). Perfectly dressed. Notable good Artisan bread served with fruity olive oil, and replenished when asked. I'm not a dessert person, but always enjoy Cathryn's desserts. Miss the Moo Moo's ice cream and was told will return in the Spring. Tip I: ask the price of specials and desserts to avoid any sticker shock. Generally prices are higher when price is not given. What a disappointment! With a party of 10. Manager was unseen until we asked her to come to speak to us. Horrible service. They ran out of lava cake and tiramisu. The desserts were 9.50$ to $10 for a torturous which consisted of a scoop of ice cream rolled in crushed pistachio nuts. The cheesecake was dry. We had to beg for coffee which was served in a new cup each time. The servers keep saying "they must be brewing it." The busboy served coffee cups without saucers- how tacky. They own a tea shop and should know how to serve coffee and tea. The brunch came with a soggy SMALL portion of mixed greens, a smaller portion of roasted potatoes. The eggs were warm not hot. This Brunch plate not worth $15. The grilled salmon came with a very Small side of marinated white beans which my friends said did taste good. The Salmon plate is NOT worth $22. We mentioned to the Manager that the milk server had stains of brown inside the little pitcher. She said "Oh, they must have used it for the expresso" . We told her service was HORRIBLE and she said "you were in a big party and came at different times" we told her that we we in minutes of each other and the server took out order all at once . She never apologized and said they can't handle large parties. The servers made some excuse about a cruise ship that came into NY this weekend and they were busy. Not true because no one table turned over in the 2 hours we were there. The Manager needs to GO! This place needs to close down. My 18 yo son and I went to visit Cold Spring . I'd spent lots of time there in the past when I was married to his Dad. Went with my son and had a great time and the most outstanding meal . So glad we were able to walk in for an early dinner. The food and the service were amazing! Our waiter (Dave? I hope I got it right?) was awesome. Guessed our favorite cocktails (a cosmo and a Manhattan) and proceeded to make the most amazing drinks for us! He even went across the street to get fresh limes for my cosmo! Absolutely above and beyond! Great experience all around! The oysters we had were delicious. We love going to Maine and Rhode Island so it's not always easy to find oysters that compare and these were excellent! I wish I could remember the name of the dish I had. It was a three cheese handbag shaped ravioli with pear and it was phenomenal. My husband had the swordfish with scallops that was delicious and came with the creamiest mashed potatoes. Cathryns Tuscan grill, so where do I begin. First, great outdoor seating - that's what drew us here. We finished a hike and we're trying to find a snack and water! We thought it would be nice to sit outside, but as it was a very busy day for Cold Springs, we weren't the only ones. Everywhere had a pretty long wait and we had mentioned earlier that we loved the patio at Cathryns. The BAD: When we got there we noticed a few open tables outside so we thought we would get lucky, when we went in to talk to the hostess, there was no one at the desk, that's fine, we waited. The hostess came around and was on the phone, she was getting kinda snippy with the person on the phone, as soon as she got off the whole and sighed pretty loud. Quickly after another phone call came in, she took it again and as we were just standing there waiting for her, my friend and I were talking to one another (not very loudly). The hostess DID not like that we were talking, she threw her hand between our faces and "shhh'd" me, we were both shocked by this. Once she got off the phone she did not apologize, but she justified why she did so... Once we let her know we wanted a table for two she annoyingly told us there were no tables outside, we said that was fine and asked if we could sit inside, she let us know she had to clean it off, we were okay with this. She then asked the people that came in behind us how she could help them, they asked for a table outside, she said no, they asked if they could get a drink, she, verbatim, said "if I could only serve drinks I'd have one right now" My friend and I looked at each other in a shocked look. We finally got seated, we thought the worst of it was behind us as not everyone in the restaurant could be rude. Our waitress came around maybe 13 minutes after we were seated, at this point we were extra THIRSTY, as we were beyond thirsty before being seated! She came around and just stood there with her head on her pad of paper, we had to just tell her what we wanted to order. This happened three more times. Once our appetizer came out (burrata and tomatoes), we never got plates or silverware. We called her over and asked for silverware, she looked at our table and it took her maybe 10 seconds to accept what we asked for. Once she came back she just threw it on the table and walked away. Title for this review should be ONCE NEVER AGAIN. After a long day of touring the area myself and a friend stopped for dinner and respite at Cathryn's Tuscan Grill. Hard to enjoy a Tuscan restaurant when coming from a loudspeaker in the neighboring room is noisy hard rock music which the staff did not see the need to tone down. Ordered a glass of wine which had to be returned because it tasted like vinegar. Three more glasses of different wines also arrived and also tasted strongly like vinegar...perhaps because they were not fresh from the bottle but had been sitting in opened bottles in the restaurant's bar. So instead turned to amaretto cocktails which hit the spot. Two appetizers, one undercooked mussels dish was inedible, even after a second round of mussels appeared and were also "cold" and inedible... chef forget to steam or boil them??? The other appetizer of 3 medium shrimps with gorgonzola cheese wrapped in bacon ($18) was both expensive and mediocre as neither of us could discern the gorgonzola which is a pungent cheese hard not to taste and the shrimp too was either second rate or not fresh. Our pasta dinners were deemed good (Linguini Nero al Lemona) and very good (Rigatoni alla Buttera). The dessert of local made ice cream was excellent. Our patient waitress also did her job very well. Both of us dine out frequently, several times a week, and rarely feel the need to ever make a complaint. However this experience was an exception. My friend asked twice to speak to the manager/owner with the thought of giving her tips on how to improve the Grille's dining experience (like get rid of the hard rock music) but the manager/owner never appeared, Hence ONCE NEVER AGAIN ! read more

I rarely choose to give food reviews unless the food and service was absolutely wonderful or beyond words atrocious. Unfortunately, for myself and my friends, the experience was the latter. We were promptly seated indoors, most likely due to the fact that the French Bistro across the street had a 2 hour wait. In hindsight, we probably should've waited or had gone to a mcdonalds if we knew what we had in store for ourselves. Our waitress had taken our food and drink order within a reasonable time, but everything started to fall off the rails quickly after. My friends had ordered the penne with shrimp. The portions of pasta were fine, but only came with 3 pieces of shrimp. For a $25+ dish, I'd say that's pretty laughable. Unless there was a shrimp shortage we were unaware of, there's no reason a dish like that should warrant that price. As for myself, I had the pappardelle. After a few bites I wasn't sure if I had come down with CoVid since the food tasted bland and uninspiring or if the chefs simply forgot to season the food. It's not Covid. Now, you may be reading this and think that I'm being too critical especially since, and I'll admit, I finished my plate. However I'll chalk that up to being famished after our long hike and the useless need to inform the owner and make worse of a so far terrible dining experience. When it started to go completely down hill is when our waitress, relatively out of nowhere, apologized for having to take back the drink menu (we had planned to order more drinks throughout the day) as to not upset the owner. She then, very loudly, mouthed that the place was an "absolute shit show". The cherry on top of this shit sundae was when one of my friends had tried to order a cappuccino during desert and was told that they couldn't because they were just "too busy." We had asked again, just to be sure, and were met with a scoff and a firm "no." We had tipped the customary 18% because sure, you should support local dining. However, I think the money on the entire bill would've been better served to sending the cooks back to culinary school and the staff back to kindergarten so that they can be re-educated on how to talk to others (especially your customers) with respect! Steer clear and go elsewhere. Seriously. I think the only thing that'll save this restaurant is if Gordon Ramsey decides to start filming Kitchen Nightmares again, but I'm sure that he'll even agree this place was (let's say all together) a "shit show". read more

Once it was time to pay our waiter had added the order of the table next to ours onto our bill. We pointed it out. She went to correct it. After a 10 min wait she brings it back. One of our credit cards missing and instead of splitting in half the entire bill was charged to one card. We could not see our waiter so I notify the owner my card is missing and if she could give it back? My card had been missing for a good 15 min and of course I wanted to know who had it. Her reply we make misstakes! I tell her can I have my card back. As it is not ok for it yo be gone 20 min and she is not even looking for it. She starts screaming in the middle of the restaurant at me amd tells me to shut up! I tell her not to speak to me like that. Other guests chime in. In my entire life I have never seen a person much less someone in service behave this rudely and tell a customer asking a question to shut up! They lost my card and charged another tables bill to it! As we are leaving the restaurant the owner screams and calls me a cunt! This place is horrible, no manners, the owner knows nothing about bring professional. Horrible experience!! Do not recommend to anyone! NY come to cold spring for a relaxing day in a cute spot. There only a few restaurants so they end up choosing this one. It was a horrible experience ever!! Me and 3 of my friends waited for over an hour of for only Burgers and Salad. We like so tired for a hike and chooses a food that don't take so that long.
