Such a tasty dinner! I made a reservation for two at 5:30 on a Thursday. (They're closed Tuesday and Wednesday... so keep that in mind.) We were given the option to sit inside or outside, which was nice. It was a warm summer evening so outdoor seating was sounding especially lovely. For drinks we went with a bottle of Prosecco ($30). Can't go wrong with a few glasses of refreshing bubbly. We were planning on ordering the Hummus & Olives appetizer ($12) or the Truffle Fries ($10), but once our waiter mentioned that they're both heavy in the garlic department (tummy can't deal) we went with the Crab Cake appetizer instead ($16). The crab cakes were tasty! The cakes themselves contained fresh Dungeness crab and were served over pear ginger beurre blanc with a few dots of habanero cream on the side for a kick. The cakes were on the smaller side but pretty flavorful, as well as tender with a pleasantly crisp exterior. The beurre blanc was rather subtle in flavor so it didn't overpower the delicate crab. If you don't like spice, stay away from the habanero cream, although I enjoyed just a touch. The plating could have used a pop of color, but it was good overall. I do consume seafood occasionally (no real deal meat over here), but the Cauliflower Steak ($18) was sounding especially appetizing, so I went the veggie route. And I'm so glad I did! The "steak" was seared and perfectly tender. I believe it was served over a tomato sauce of sorts and topped with melted cheese curds, along with a warm relish of roasted tomatoes, kalamata olives, evoo, sea salt, and lemon. Bright scallions added a subtle bite and an extra pop of freshness. The dish was satisfying, yet light, and the plating was appealing too. An overall win for sure! Service was good... our waiter respected the fact that we wanted to take our time and enjoy a leisurely meal. The ambiance is nice considering it's casual Orcas although you can saunter in wearing shorts and a t-shirt complete with sandals. Bonus points for actual hand towels (one use) and lotion in the bathrooms. Looking forward to dining at New Leaf Cafe again in the future when visiting Orcas! read more

*Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures, but trust me, it was delicious!* By far one of the best restaurants we have eaten at while visiting the San Juan Islands. Our server was extremely friendly and gave lots of tips. My guy likes oysters so we started off with a half dozen of oysters. I personally don't care for raw oysters but I take his word that they were super fresh! After that we shared the crab cakes and a half order or Caesar salad. The crab cakes were so tasty with no filling with just the crab meet and a nice thin crust on the outside. The Caesar salad was a nice side to the crab cakes and I appreciated that they didn't overpower it with too much dressing. For our main courses my guy got the filet mignon and I got the scallops. His filet was cooked perfectly and for someone who is pretty picky on steak, enjoyed the whole thing. My scallops were so juicy and they gave so many. Great place for brunch, friendly service, and the food was amazing. Good options for vegetarians as well. My only complaint is being seated by the bar and directly next to the restrooms. Couldn't smell or hear anything but the thought of sharing a wall with the toilet is enough to bother me. It's one table, they should just remove it. read more

First of all beautiful setting with nice ambiance. We were cordially greeted and promptly seated by the friendly host. The menu was not to big, obviously seasonal yet still had plenty of delicious options. I had the traditional eggs benedict and my lovely wife had a half order of the crab cake Benedict. Everything was impeccably prepared and nicely presented. Those eggs must have been local as the yolks were bright yellow and the whites were nice and tight. My wife and I are lifetime industry professionals and we don't often write reviews. Our experience was so memorable it was deemed necessary. Maybe a victim of its own success? I loved this restaurant for years, but it has changed. The vibe is no longer cozy. Service at breakfast was friendly but at dinner not so much. There is lame and loud music getting piped in over loudspeakers, killing the peacefulness of the spot. The food is still very good, but even that is less enjoyable than it used to be, with some of the classics (like the lardon salad) gone from the menu. Maybe they're going for a different clientele these days, but I miss the peacefulness and low-key warmth. read more

New Leaf Cafe was the highlight of my visit to Orcas Island. My group had the two egg breakfast, the Belgian waffle, and the crab cakes Benedict. Everything was delicious. The bacon was thick and still crispy, and the potatoes were out of this world. We all also ordered coffee, which was fresh and delicious. The refills came often and were appreciated! Super cute place with a respectable Benedicts menu but an unfortunate clientele that does not abide by the clearly outlined restaurant rules and a staff that doesn't enforce them despite the signs. What rules, you ask? The rules about using your cell at the table. There were 3 other tables around us- ALL with full grown adults watching videos for the duration of there meal with the volume fully up. One adult woman was blasting telenovela episodes at her table of 6 while the rest of her family attempted to hold a conversation and while I passive aggressively side-eyed and threw shady comments, I really wish the staff would have stepped up and asked them to shut the sh*t the down because it fully disturbed our meal. I regretted requesting a spot away from the table with the screaming baby because at least that was a child who doesn't know better and not a full grown adult who brought a device to assist in disturbing those around them. :::moving on::: Food was good. Coffee was good but the service could have been a little more on. Both my and my dining partner's mugs were empty for most of the wait before our meal. My shrimp and grits were a bit of a mixed bag. The grits were perfect and some of the best I've had but the red sauce they put on top wasn't a good blend. It was just a little too zesty for breakfast and didn't pair well with the grits. I regretted not getting a Benedict since they had so many intriguing options, but I'd come back again to try. One thing I would not order- the waffle. Both my dining partner and I watched as the table below us on the patio got theirs and at the same time turned to each other and remarked how glad we were to have not gotten it because it looked so basic. A beautiful place and the staff couldn't be more welcoming and generous; Outlook Inn is gorgeous and Eastsound a lovely little village. But as for the restaurant attached to the Outlook Inn, it felt very different from last time we were there. Is it the new corporate ownership? We couldn't help but feel taken advantage of with the outrageous pricing on our dinners. $52 for steak and $28 for crab cake appetizers (that would be an entree at a high end seafood restaurant in Seattle) is an indication of exorbitance for a small country inn. We were so excited to be back there at the Outlook Inn and invited friends to join us for dinner. But the music over the PA system was too loud to hear our conversation. The staff was more than happy to oblige but said they couldn't change the volume because it was programmed in. Oh well! read more

This was one of the few restaurants on Orcas Island which had potential vegan options on the menu, and as a result, we ended up here twice! Once for dinner, and then again for brunch. For dinner, I had the cauliflower steak, made without cheese curds. It was really nice and filling! My friend ordered the same, without changing it, and it definitely looked more hearty. We ordered a bottle of local wine, a rosé, and toasted to our first night on the island! We came back for brunch and I was delighted to see a vegan option listed, and labeled as such! I had the house made maple coconut granola with almond milk, which came with an abundance of fresh berries. While I normally think of pancakes and tofu scrambles when I dream of brunch, this hit the spot and was both delicious and filling. I also had a "Berries and Bubbles" cocktail that was perfect. The ambiance was so lovely. At night, it was dimly lit and romantic. During brunch, we sat out on the patio and looked out at the water. The service was very friendly, they had no problem veganizing my dinner or getting me soy milk for coffee. Because I'm greedy, I'd love more vegan options, but it was nice to at least have something. read more

We spent a few days on the San Juan island before coming over to Orcas Island for a couple of nights. This was our best dining experience during our week's visit. We have dine here last year and the food continues to not disappoint. The restaurant adhered to the social distancing and tables were spread out. We both had the French Onion soup for our appetizer. I had the scallops and my husband had the rack of lamb. We split the wine poached pear dessert and the food was prepared wonderfully. All was sooo good. The San Juan Islands is one of the gems in our state. If you come for a visit I would highly recommend making reservations way in advance. read more

A very special dinner at the New Leaf. We started out with Happy Hour in the bar (5-6pm) and had a nice glass of the house white and red. Both better than we had expected. The bar had four stools and 3 or 4 tables with what seemed like a lot of locals. We did not try any food but the Caesar salad was huge and the truffle fries were popular also. Not a big selection on the happy hour price list but $5 beer and wine, a huge $7 salad and add a small plate or two would make a tasty dinner. We dined on the front patio on a warm, sunny evening. Our waiter Shawn was great and did a perfect job helping us with our dinner choices. It started out with steaming fresh focaccia and bread with the Caesar salad (light on the dressing was good), which has nice chunks of Parmesan and was garlicky good. I had the Copper River sockeye salmon on asparagus and Yukon gold mashed potatoes - fantastic and a large portion of all. I thought it would be a little sweet with the Washington cherry champagne reduction but it was wonderful. My mate opted for the small plates duo of Dungeness crab cakes and the lamb sliders. Both were fantastic and the cakes were pretty much pure crab. You can taste the fresh, local ingredients. Because getting here before they close at noon can be difficult if you aren't spending the night before on Orcas, plan your ferry trip accordingly. From Anacortes, if you take the 7am over the 10am, that's the only way to ensure you can have their yummy breakfast. My daughter LOVED their gf waffles w maple syrup and whipped butter. One of the best breakfasts of my life. On Orcas Island, of all places. If you've seen the movie, Practical Magic, you probably know that it was filmed out here in the good ol' PNW. And even though New Leaf is not on Whidbey Island where it was filmed, the restaurant looks like it fell out of the cute, pristine white town that is portrayed in the movie. Back to breakfast. I had the Duck Confit hash and it was FULL of huge pieces of duck. The potatoes were flawless and in such a perfect harmonious ratio to the duck, I nearly wept. The killer piece de resistance was the brioche toast that is served with it! I can't remember the last time I had brioche in toast-form that was so good. It dissolved in your mouth right away, and didn't need butter. And what good is any kind of brioche without strawberry freezer jam? I ate the whole jar. My friend had a scramble with cheese, and after she tasted my breakfast, she picked at her plate and stared forlornly at me. And though it pained me, I shared one more bite with her--and promptly cut her off. The service was stellar, the bright sun peeked into every nook and cranny of the restaurant. Their HH is famous here, so we came back the same night and I had the Duck Confit mac and cheese with a beer. GHERK! It was so delicious, I slowed down so I could savor each bite! This is one of the better restaurants on Orcas Island, in my opinion (up there with Ship Inn and Rose's). Their hours vary depending on the season; I was surprised during last weekend that they weren't providing lunch service yet. I've been here a handful of times now, and have always enjoyed the food and service. They offer fresh and well-prepared food, and this time when we brought the kids, learned that they have kid options too (wagyu beef sliders with fries and plain mac n cheese)! I ordered the smoked salmon bow-tie pasta, which was flavorful and contained generous amounts of smoked salmon. The french onion soup was also wonderful, with a generous layer of melted, broiled cheese, the way I like it! And my drink, the house special sangria, was gorgeously prepared.
