I've been ordering from this place once every 1-2 weeks for the past few years. I always go back because the food is really good and pretty consistent. I've never actually sat down to eat but the staff at the host desk are always very polite and concerned about getting me my order. I love the Lobster Tango roll (definitely one of the best rolls I've ever had), the spicy tuna roll, the spicy scallop roll, and all of the hibachi meals. Occasionally when I get the chicken hibachi, the chicken can be a little rubbery. That's the only disappointment I can remember having with this place. Avoid this place if you can. Service is inattentive and slow, fish is not so fresh and menu options are misleading. Last time my boyfriend and I ate here was on a Sunday in the winter. I ordered the Chirashi. Now, Chirashi is a bowl of sushi rice with pieces of assorted sashimi on top. I have gotten Chirashi at many places and this is what it is supposed to be. My boyfriend ordered some basic salmon and spicy tuna rolls. After over an hour it took for us to get our food and it was just us and two other tables. Sushi chefs were not busy and neither were the staff. My boyfriend kept asking them to hurry up. We missed our movie due to their lax service. The server goes to the sushi chefs and brings me a rectangular, shallow plate containing a small ball of white rice with 9 tiny thin slices of sashimi, 3 types, next to it. I ask her what the heck is this?! I ordered Chirashi! She said this WAS Chirashi! I argued with her, explained that a) the rice was supposed to be seasoned and b) it was supposed to be a BOWL with several types of fish on top! She said "not here" and smirked. They refused to reimburse me for the 18 dollars I spent on this fraud...We have yet to return. Not only that, but the fish was gross, fishy smelling and bad tasting. We were stuck an additional hour trying to get the check paid for! I ended up being starving afterwards due to the small portion size, with a tummy ache the next day. I refer to it as "treasure soup" because sometimes you pull out some chicken, some egg, a piece of crab... I enjoy the hunt and revel in the mystery. My obnoxious coworker leaves to pick it up so if I could add extra stars for that I would. Everything they order looks good, they offer value lunch bento and habachi boxes. This is my favorite sushi place on Long Island. However, the only downside is the staff isn't that great. Last time I was there was on a Saturday night and I went late with a friend. The food took a long time and they wouldn't let us order dessert even though there was still 45 minutes until their advertised closing time. We have been to Hama a few times and enjoyed it but tonight it seems they really stepped up their game with the quality and presentation of the fish. We started with a mackerel sushi/sashimi appetizer and it was a feast for the eyes. The fish was delicious and fresh. Our sushi/sashimi platter also was lovely to look at and had a nice variety of fish. The toro was very buttery. We also tried some rolls - not sure what they were because I prefer my sushi in its original format but there was one with lobster that was very tasty. The service was excellent and the price for all we ordered and drank was quite reasonable. Oh yes, the 10% yelp coupon at check in was an added bonus! Wish this place was closer to home. read more

Hama has become our "go to" place for sushi. Always fresh and always good. They have a lot of different rolls that will leave even hard core sushi lovers coming back for more. My favorite are the Godzilla and UFO rolls. I really love the oyster shots as well. If you are not into sushi, the menu has many other excellent things to try. Udon soup is very good, especially the spicy seafood variety. They make an excellent pork katsudon and Bibimbap. If you are in the Plainview area, there are several decent choices for Japanese food. From the outside it may look a little dark and forbidding, but take a chance and enter. As soon as you enter, you will notice that the front glass window is covered by a running waterfall. Inside, the ambiance is a dark, decor has a modern feel apart from the traditional Japanese look. In the front are about 7-9 tables and a bar (it would have been nice if they made it a nice cocktail area for people to drink at) . At the back is the sushi chef is along with anoter ~15 tables. We were seated in the front area for our group of 6. The restaurant was about half full when we had arrived around 12:30pm. After we had placed our orders, the restaurant was almost completely full. We were immediately served with complimentary edmame, a huge unexpected treat. Yummy! For my appetizer, I ordered the miso soup, which was you standard average tasting miso broth with tofu and seaweed. For my entree, I got three rolls for $12.95: Godzilla (spicy tuna, avocado, battered fried), Frence (shrimp tempura, crab, avocado), and Spicy Tuna roll. All ingredients were fresh. My favorite of the three was the godzilla roll which was perfectly fried in batter while not making the tuna and avocado mushy. All of my colleagues were also pleased with their meals, ranging from other rolls, to the chicken teriyaki, and shrimp tempura. Service was the only thing I found slightly lacking at this place. The waitress did come once after our meals were served to see if we needed anything else but she never came again except to clean the table near the end of our meal. When we had asked for the bill, it took them about 10-15 minutes to prepare the complimentary sliced oranges along with the bill. read more

We had some excellent sushi here recently. Everything was fresh and they had some great wild salmon, baby yellowtail and toro on special. We really enjoyed this and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It is also worth a note that the chef plated our sushi entree really artfully, it made me smile. The service was attentive and they seemed genuinely concerned that we were enjoying our food. They gave us a free roll to start which was some sort of tempura and cream cheese concoction maybe with some shrimp, I don't normally eat rolls like that but it was tasty and appreciated. I ordered take out online on Saturday night. They said about 30 minutes, it was ready in 20 packed up nicely no spills and lots of cardboard packing for easy transport home. I had Sashimi Deluxe which was 22 pieces of fresh, cool raw fish. Excellent. It came with a choice of soup or salad and rice. An okay experience. Not bad sushi, but just decent. Got here Friday at about 845 PM. The open table was by the friend, next to the open door. I was a bit cold so I asked if we could sit in the back. They said a table was clearing up if we don't mind waiting a few on the couch in front of the front desk, which was fine for me. About 2 minutes later a couple left, so we knew that would be our table. Well 10 minutes later, we still were not seated. Another person walks in for a table for two and the hostess proceeds to bring him to the table in the back we were waiting for. I got up and went to the person at the front desk hey wait, I thought that was our table? She apologized because she actually forgot we were waiting! I brushed it off, no big deal I was excited for sushi. Sat down and first thing that caught my eye on the menu was oyster shots. We were going to order two and she explained 4 come with each order, so she saved us from getting 4 shots. We also decided to order the sashimi pizza as an appetizer. The waitress came out and apologized that there were no more oysters, that was really disappointing. She suggested we order a mackerel platter, which was $18 worth of the fish! This is compared to the I believe $8 oyster shots. I never had mackerel and said I didn't want to test it for the first time on such a large dish. We decided to order 2 pieces of smoke salmon sashimi. We also went with a hot sake. The sashimi pizza was lacking something. The fish was okay on it, not the freshest, but it needed seasoning like guacamole. As for the smoked salmon, it barely had a smoky taste to it. The hot sake was tasty. Next we went with the Ika Maru, grilled squid with special sauce. This was delicious. We also ordered a bottle of sake. The bottle was cold but they didn't bring out an ice bucket to keep it cold, which was strange. I had to request something and they brought out a carafe for it. Weird that they have the carafe but don't bring it out with the bottle of sake. Next, tom yum soup. We only ordered one bowl, and to our surprise they brought out a large bowl since they knew we were sharing. The problem, the soup had the baby shrimp in it. I am not a fan of these shrimp, they are cheaper and usually do not taste as good. I like when they give the larger shrimp. But the soup was not too bad. Finally, we ordered the angel roll. The roll was supposed to just have blakened tuna, asparagus, topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel, wasabi and mango eel sauce. The roll definitely did not have all of that. There was eel sauce, not mango. No wasabi on top and for some reason there was avocado. But I do like avocado so I wasn't complaining, just wasn't what I ordered. They also brought us a free large hot sake, that as a nice compliment especially since we were debating ordering one more sake. We were at the restaurant for about an hour and 45 minutes. In the end, it was decent but I would not come back. Kiku in Massapequa is the comparable sushi place and I would choose Kiku over Hama any day. read more

The food here is decent, not awesome and not horrible. In general I would say Hama Sushi is pretty good and reasonably priced. Their bento boxes range from $8-$11 and their sushi lunches are around $13. I usually get their bento boxes which include a miso soup, salad, one piece of shumai and two pieces of california roll. The chicken teriyaki box is all right, the cutlet is not very thick and sometimes it's a bit dry but like I said, it's a-ok. Today I ordered the salmon teriyaki which was pretty good and the portion was just right for lunch. We also ordered the vegetable tempura which was yummy, just the right amount of batter where the vegetables were still firm and not soggy/falling apart. I hate it when I go to dip the tempura in the sauce and everything falls apart so I was a happy camper. For $5 they gave a generous portion of tempura and my lunch buddy and I were able to easily share. All in all a solid lunch spot that I keep on rotation. read more

One of our favorites. We drive about 10 miles to get here when there are at least a dozen japanese restaurants closer to our house. The staff is always friendly, the service is always fast and accurate, and the food selection and quality are top notch. The lunch specials are a great deal and should draw more of a crowd than they do, because for little more than a Mcburger meal you can get some REAL food, not to mention vastly healthier. I have been to Hama at least twenty four times in the past two years...probably much more. First of all go on a Friday or a Saturday night, that is when the best wait staff is on. Second, order their special rolls, they are amazing. The flavor combinations compliment each other perfectly. I recommend the L.I. roll, the Nassau roll, and the U.S.A. (steer clear of the Crazy Angel and the Hot Texas). Savor every bite because it it the best sushi I have had. Third, the soy sauce is, by far, the best I have ever had. I am all about sushi. I USED TO love this place and come here on a regular basis for years. Since the new management they have changed one of my all time favorite rolls "the downtown". Used to be inside out, fried salmon,onions w/a little mayo and crabmeat ontop with a sweet glaze sauce drizzled over. Now the whole inside is fried crabmeat with trace amounts of salmon. I asked the wait staff about the change and they tried to play it off like that was how it always was. Aside from this huge disappointment I would still go back. The range of rolls that is for the lunch special is much wider than most lunch specials I've encountered (25 in all). I love being able to pick from quality choice and more interesting rolls versus the generic ones most other places offer. The rolls they give are on the large side and everything I've had has always been fresh and tasty. The green salad is a moderate appropriate size with delicious ginger dressing. The miso soup is standard. I've also had the beef negamaki which I would get again, but really I only go for the sushi. They also make a great what I call 'sushi salad' is actually the Hae Du Bop. I don't know why its listed under rice dishes. It comes in a big bowl with lots of green leaves, chopped cucumber, seaweed salad, crab meat and a pile of chopped raw fish thats probably about 4oz. Rice on the side. Getting avocado in the salad which was on the menu last I saw is hit or miss. Even without I still really enjoy it. Had I reviewed this place a year ago I would've given them 5 stars but alas I am still heartbroken over the loss of and denial over 'the downtown'. read more

I was in Long Island for work and wanted Asian food. I didn't expect much from this place given the reviews but it was convenient. I ordered the Sukiyaki noodle soup since it was cold out. Do not order this! It was pretty gross! and to top it all off, this was $16!!! I would have preferred to have instant ramen and it would have cost me $1. Hama is my go-to sushi/Japanese place and it never fails to impress. As someone who doesn't eat raw fish, I often struggle to find good specialty rolls that are more creative and appetizing. However, Hama has great options and all the cooked speciality rolls I've tried so far are AMAZING - My favorite is the Ireland. My friends who eat raw fish/"real" sushi love it as well. As far as the cooked food, I love the sauteed bok choy and the soba noodles- both have great flavor. My friends always get the teriyaki dishes and love them, though I have yet to try these, as I can never pass up an opportunity to order the rolls! As for the restaurant itself, it's a cute little place, though the parking lot is pretty terrible. There's a sign on the door saying there's additional parking in the back, though if you circle the main lot a bit you'll definitely find a spot. I've never had a problem with the service and always leave extremely satisfied. Delivery is a definite plus. read more

Yes, other restaurants have $13 for 3 rolls, but Hama has some special rolls included, which I think is really neat! Also, if they know they took a long time, they always include a free appetizer. I came here for a quick lunch and didn't think I would be impressed by a sushi place in a strip mall. Once I walked inside, I was suprised by the decor of the place, it looked like a nice lounge that you would see in the city. We were seated quickly. I got the spicy tuna and hollywood roll (yellow tail and salmon with avocado) The fish was fresh and tasty. Although the best roll was what my bf order which was the Godzilla roll, it was a tempura spicy tuna roll. It was crispy, slightly spicy and oily at all. I really like this place, definitely a must-go if you are in the neighborhood. Decent prices for quality sushi and not to mention, their staff is very friendly. We tried their Spicy Tuna Pizza and their 10 Piece Sashimi as appetizer. For my entree, I tried their Seafood Fried Rice which included two large shrimp, two large scallops, crab, egg, squid and vegetables. It came out piping hot and the presentation was elegant.
