I've been coming here in my entire life. Steve is the best, and sushi is beyond fresh if you ever need casual sushi this is the spot.

We drove out to Syosset just for this restaurant. It's been about 5 years of having my gluten allergy and has been so hard to find a Japanese restaurant that offers more than just edamame to eat. I found this place on Find Me Gluten and was so excited to try it. The staff were so kind and very well informed about my allergies. The entire menu can be customized to be gluten-free. They told me they have seperate, dedicated fryers for items like tempura and that the only items that I couldn't have were the tamago, eel, imitation crab and the dumplings. We got an order of the shrimp and vegetable tempura and the Rock shrimp (which was suggested to us by the staff). Both were absolutely delicious. They gave me my own gluten-free dipping sauce for the tempura as well as gluten-free soy sauce. We split the sushi for 2 and they made sure the tamago my husband ordered for himself wasn't touching my pieces. I had the lox roll with that and we ordered a Las Vegas roll to split, which was customized to remove the imitation crab and swapped for shrimp instead. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious, especially the salmon. I was so happy to enjoy a wonderful meal like this again. They gave us some sashimi on the house and some fresh honeydew for dessert. The place was beautifully decorated and very clean. To top it all off there were no extra charges for making anything gluten-free! I will gladly come back here again. read more

I FOUND HAIR IN MY TAKEOUT ORDER!! Normally I don't write reviews but I had to for this one. We ordered takeout for vegetable stir fry with rice and vegetable rolls. As soon as we opened the box I found a hair on the tofu and I immediately threw it out. The sushi also looked very strange- it almost looked like they put together whatever was left at the end of the day- soggy carrot, broccoli, etc I have never eaten a vegetable roll with these ingredients. Seems like things they would put in a stir fry dish. Threw out everything! Never going back there again. If I could give 0 or negative stars I would. read more

I have a gluten allergy and this place not only has the best quality sushi I've had, but they also have been extremely accommodating and gone out of their way to make sure I felt safe. My mom and I have gone there together multiple times and the manager always came over to check on us and even suggested that we both have the gluten free soy sauce to eliminate the risk of cross contamination (my mom even said that she likes the gluten free soy sauce better than regular soy sauce.) I have so so much love for this place and the staff is always incredible and makes us feel important. It's around 45 minutes from me and we will be taking another trip over there some time this week and planning our day around going there because it is always worth the trip. read more

Wow, never knew of this place in Syosset til my friends and I came for dinner recently. Very friendly owner, staff and service and this place has been here for a long time. The owner knows many of the local customers who eat in or take out. Eat in or take out, you cannot go wrong. Shared parking lot with other stores. Sushi bar has some seating and there are 2 tvs to watch sports while you eat as well. Large variety on the menu and some dishes are gluten free...just ask your server. Check out the daily specials as well. Been here twice already and the food is really good. Very nice and generous of the owner to give us stuffed shitake with crabmeat and salmon as a complimentary appetizer to try. I highly recommend ordering this appetizer on the menu. Appetizers: Gyoza and tuna tartar are delicious Entrees: Sushi is made fresh and the special combo boxes are a good value. I've had the sashimi box twice and still have yet to finish it. It comes with miso soup and salad, california roll, and crab meat tempura, shrimp and veggie tempura! Chicken katsu, beef nagimaki, salmon terriyaki were all delicious as well. Hot green tea helps digestion. Make sure to save room for dessert...have t come back to have the fried banana and fried ice cream. This is such a cozy sushi spot. I've been here twice and had a great meal and service both times. I've ordered the California Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Yellowtail and the Miso Soup. The first time I came an unexpected snow storm came to NY and it was just the perfect touch of warmth. The staff made sure we were good and even the owner came out to make sure we were enjoying our meal a couple of times. I noticed that the owner stopped to talk to a couple of guests who seemed like regulars. Which was nice to see. You want to go where people know your name and care. I am gluten free and have ordered from this restaurant over 10 times over the past 2 years. my experience today was horrible. for an order that cost $31 before gluten free modifications came out to almost $47! absurdly overcharging for gluten free. couldn't fathom it. when I complained they told me to take my food and never order from there again. male manager was very rude and looked down on celiac disease during our conversation. read more

My brother-in-law took us to this storefront Japanese restaurant. Small with a very nice and broad menu. Very fresh The owner who is constantly circulating around the 2 dining rooms brought us Fried Mushrooms complementary, really good. I had the sashimi dinner that had 16 pieces of 5 different fishes, very fresh. Comes with soup or salad. I tried the salad with an excellent carrot-ginger dressing. I have no idea how this place has such good reviews. Either have to question everyone's taste levels, or they just like the friendly owner. I will say the staff were VERY KIND and very accommodating. They even gave us fried mushrooms and pineapple on the house. BUT, they also tried to pressure us into ordering things that weren't even on our radar. Most importantly, the food was horrendous. Def the worst sushi I've had on LI. There are sooo many good spots around Nassau there is no reason to come here. The rolls are so small. I got the Canadian and USA roll. The Canadian was ok ( a stretch) but the USA was inedible. It tasted rancid and I hardly ate it. It was really bad. My stomach still hurts to be honest. The pictures are true .. they're as sad as the taste. It sucks bc they're really sweet , but the foods just terrible. read more

Growing up in Syosset, this has been our local (and most frequented) sushi spot for several years. Several businesses have come and gone in the Syosset Plaza, but Tenjin has been a fixture here for as long as I can remember eating sushi. First and foremost, good sushi depends on good fish, and Tenjin delivers in spades. Sushi and Sashimi pieces are fresh and delicious - the salmon is always nicely marbled and tuna has a perfect texture, with or without rice. Tenjin's menu contains typical Japanese selections alongside some unique offerings, and is comprehensive, without being overwhelming. Off the appetizer menu, I enjoy their sauteed oysters, served in 5-6 shells with a zesty garlic sauce, with a nice lump of white rice centering the plate. On one occasion (side note), about 15 of us came in for dinner, and our table was treated to three flatbread tuna "pizzas" which didn't appear anywhere on the menu, but boy, were they tasty! Speaking of things not on the menu, hands down, my favorite specialty roll is the "Canadian Volcano." Although it doesn't appear in print, this concoction of salmon, crab, fluke, apple, and a trio of sauces is practically orgasmic...FACT. Other notable specialty rolls include the UFO, pink & white specials, and Las Vegas roll. As mentioned in another review, ask your server for suggestions based on your personal taste, as there are many "house favorites" that aren't even included on the menu, but spread merely by word of mouth. Overall, Tenjin is a terrific spot, with friendly service, a creative menu (where the "fish haters" still have plenty of selection), reasonable prices, and above all else, fresh, delicious fish and ingredients - Highly recommended!! read more

Customer service is far better than than sushi. As I continue my sushi elitism, I'm again faced with non-Japanese staff making sushi. Call me an elitist racist, but sushi making in Japan is an honored tradition where master of the art are trained for years before they even allowed to place blade on fish. I digress.... This joint does it better than most. Their spicy edamame is some of the best I've had...Saba it probably I've had recently. Americanized rolls seem to be the same crunchy spicy mayo nonsense that drive sushi snobs like me crazy. Salmon skin hand roll had a fantastic taste, a little sloppy drippy.... Where to begin with this one... I will say that the sushi was very tasty. We ordered edamame, and four rolls (fire salmon roll, snow white roll, eel roll w/mango I believe, and a mixed veggie roll). I was a little disappointed that the edamame was barely room temperature, and there wasn't much of it. But, the rolls really were great - can't complain about a single one. Please see posted photos for reference. The veggie roll came out a few minutes after our other rolls, which was a bit surprising considering there was no fish involved - you would have thought they would have come out together. But no big deal really, and the veggie roll had a unique mix (broccoli, Japanese veg, carrots, ect.). We also enjoyed the tea. So why the three stars you ask? Well, I am not quite sure I would dine-in again, though I would be more than happy to pick up take-out. The environment is loud and noisy and surprisingly full of kids. Or at least it was on this particular Friday night. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, and kudos for those parents introducing their young'uns to some sushi dinner and Japanese fare. But after a long week of work, I love a nice sushi Friday where I can zen out and get my nom on with some wasabi on the side. And I'd preferably like that in a more chilled out environment where I can talk to my date without constant distractions. Plus, the service we personally received wasn't necessarily stellar. I do see that there are a lot of regulars and the manager/owner did greet these people and converse with them which is nice to bear witness to. He did come over at one point during our meal to see how things were. Honestly, I'd try dining in once more just to see if we had a better experience, but if it's anything like the first time Tenjin will be a strickly take-out place. Also note that if you get the community coupon books you will find one to put towards your meal. I believe we saved $5.00, which is always a plus. read more

First thing that you'll notice when you enter Tenjin Restaurant, is how welcoming and friendly the staff is here. They chat with you and are very knowledgable about the menu. This is the type of service that you expect at a 5 star restaurant. To start off, we tried a few different appetizers. Started with the Shrimp Tempura. Then we had the Oysters which were very good. Then we tried the Ice-Cream (which was a lose roll stuffed with tuna and vegatable) and it was awesome. For the main dish, we started with the Pink Special, which was probably the most tastiest sushi roll that I ever had. I highly recommend it. We also tried the Rainbow roll which I enjoyed. We wanted one more dish, and asked them what they recommended, and they brought out a dish called the Rock and Roll, which wasn't on the menu. It had cooked mushroom on top, and sushi roll on the bottom and was delicious. Overall, I really liked this place, and enjoyed every item that we ordered. The sushi was excellent and the service was one of the best. This is now my new favorite sushi restaurant, and I definitely will be back. read more

Honesty is the best policy so here we go. Place is very nice, seats are comfy. The waitress was super friendly but it was the manager who made this a different experience then eating at just any other restaurant. He was so personable and knowledgeable about the food served and was a very gracious man. He really made us feel special, and that is important to me. On to the food and this is where my honesty is coming into play. The cooked food was very good. The spicy soybeans were the best soybeans I have ever eaten, not very spicy but just right. The rock shrimp appetizer was awesome too! The pork dish was pretty good, I think it needed some spicing up but was acceptable. Now the sushi review- I am no expert but even after polishing off a whole carafe of Hot sake which was awesome, I did not feel like the sushi was anything special. I hate to say it because every thing else was right on but something just wasn't hitting it right with the sushi. The one that I did enjoy was the salmon skin hand roll but for some reason it wasn't executed well because it was drippy and falling apart. I would come back again but not for the sushi. read more

I recently moved my office to Syosset and Tenjin has become one of my go to spots for sushi lunches. Almost everything on the menu is really good and as I mentioned in my first review the lunch specials are amazing. Especially good sushi choices include their salmon which is always so fresh that it almost jumps into your water glass, yellowtail that is buttery and flavorful, and their squid is very nice too. I have taken some clients who have liked their cooked food as well. Try the lightly fried shrimp appetizer as it is amazing and not heavy at all. The one word that comes to mind for Tenjin is "consistent". The sushi, the service, the atmosphere, and the prices are all reliably good. The manager Steve also runs the establishment quite well. So well and with so much pride that I thought he was the owner at first. It is obvious that most of the customers are "regulars". Steve takes very good care of them and treats them like friends . This is refreshing as lately it seems many restaurants and their proprietors don't seem to care as much as he does. I always look forward to going to Tenjin and you will too. read more

Normally, as long as the food is close to my expectations I'll leave a good review. However I was disappointed in the food, presentation and quality of the food here. The flavors were not what I expected. Nor was the bento box with imitation crab tempura (that's a first for me). The sushi chef said he was trained by a Japanese chef but maybe it was a long time ago and no one is monitoring the food production or presentation so quality goes down. I had a lovely lunch at Tenjin Sushi. The waitress was friendly and quick. There were a couple of other patrons there, but it was a weekday, so I wasn't expecting a crowd. I imagine that Tenjin is typical of a classic Tokyo sushi bar - not too fancy - and not too spacious. But I've never been to Tokyo, so what the heck do I know. It's definitely not flashy, unlike some of the other spots in the area (like that place on Jericho Tpk with the fake cherry trees outside ...) I held off on my review with the intent of revisiting Tenjin, but we moved from the area, and I honestly don't think I'll be back. While I enjoyed Tenjin, I don't think I'll drive 30 minutes out of my way to go there (sorry guys). Then again, sushi places are not as abundant in Suffolk County (or anywhere outside Syosset), and Tenjin is not *that* far away ... I gotta think about it read more
