I woke up with a craving for wonton soup and, a few hours later, found myself driving by New Dragon. It had been about four years since my last visit, and WOW--what a fantastic remodel and the food was even more delicious than I remembered. The hostess gave us the option to sit upstairs, on the main floor, or outside. Each area had its own stylish vibe and comfort, a big change from the plain booths I remembered. The upstairs had a whimsical, stylish dim bar and lounge area. Since we had the kids with us, we chose a comfortable booth on the main floor. Service was great and attentive, with our drinks and food arriving quickly. Since we had already eaten lunch, we only ordered wonton soup and an appetizer of beef teriyaki sticks. Seriously, YUM! The wonton soup was delicious, featuring perfectly tight wonton dumplings, bok choy, and tender pork slices (not fatty at all!). The beef teriyaki sticks were the highlight--perfectly cooked and tender with a nice crispy edge and sweet flavor. Although this was a quick snack stop for us, we left feeling stuffed and satisfied. Overall the place it overly hated on. Got the wonton soup which was simple but gas, chicken and broccoli was also more simple than some places but is very tasty and cooked well keeping the broccoli crunchy, and the spring roll was a 10/10. I got takeout and it was still nice and crispy and their duck sauce is a perfect dip. My only complaint would be their crab rangoon. They were soft and weird shapes and were only saved by their duck sauce. Overall, would go back. read more

We loved it. The spring rolls were larger than other local Chinese food restaurants in the area but the dough is thicker than we prefer for fried dumplings. The shrimp egg foo young and scallops with mixed Chinese vegetables was delicious. We ordered takeout and service was excellent. We'll definitely return soon. read more

Editing my review for a 2nd time in 5 years. Oh how the mighty have fallen. This used to be the best spot in town by far to get chinese food, now the food is borderline inedible. Drinks are horrible (and we will drink just about anything). We've had a God awful experience the last several times we've been here. We won't be back for a while. read more

Weirdest miso soup I have ever eaten. Way too much tofu and the tofu is weird it's not soft and silky, and food in general isn't great.

kung pow shrimp was just gross. shrimp were so tiny they reminded me of sea monkeys, the creepy mail order creatures advertised on the back cover of comic books when l was a kid. literally smaller than an inch. in fact they looked like inch worms. totally flavorless, like the dish itself, even though it was ordered extra spicy. if you can destroy such a staple of chinese food just to cut costs you can't be trusted with an eggroll. read more

Got the lunch special with chow mein. I was really surprised to see celery in a thick sauce beside crunch noodles. I tried to mix the two and it wasn't very odd. Not chow mein with normal noodles. Ok so I ordered again! Boneless spare ribs, Singapore mei fun and fried dumplings. Last time I wasn't so impressed with the fried rice. This time, the fried rice was the best part of what I ordered. The egg roll tasted much better this time but it was barely even warm. The boneless spare ribs were thin and overcooked and dry. I will never order that again from here and that's if I even order again. The Singapore mei fun is lacking in flavor. It may need to be stirred more when cooking to mix the spices better, I'm not sure. I am sure that's not an order again item either. The dumplings were made well, good flavor, not extremely greasy. Those and the rice were the win for me today. I'm disappointed with the lack of consistency here. The difference in the rice and egg roll today is way off from last time. I'm not sure I'm willing to waste money trying to find what they can actually make vs what they're not so good at. Especially with the lack of consistency. I mean it's fried rice.... I don't know what has happened to my favorite Chinese place but I'm on the hunt for a new one. Last few visits have been very disappointing. Bartender had NO IDEA what they're doing. Ordered a combo plate that had boneless spareribs and they were burnt!! Waitress said sorry and walked away. Full price when we got the check. When you've worked in the restaurant business over half your life it's very hard to let some things slide. Won't be going back! read more

The food was terrible! We ordered general tsao's chicken & vegetable chow mein The chicken was edible, but at most a 2-star. It was hard & chewy. Ate it only because we were so hungry. Chow mein was awful. I don't think I've tasted a dish like this before. No flavor whatsoever. And no noodles! Maybe I had wrong expectations, but I was looking forward to noodles with veggies. I really want to give New Dragon 5-stars. Overall, I still consider this the best Chinese-American cuisine in town. New dragon offers exceptional quality of typical Chinese-American dishes. Many of Visitors and Student of nearby University of Rhode Island frequent New Dragon. Some notable items include the quality of their fried rice, which is cooked in the regional "New England" dark soy method; as opposed to the typical yellow rice with mixed peas and carrots varieties that is ubiquitous throughout the US. The "duck sauce" is not a typical orangey sweet and sour slurry, but is delightfully dark and imparts a nice caramelized flavor; excellent to pair with the classic battered Chicken Fingers. Through the many years I have been a patron of New Dragon, and I have seen the restaurant update/expand their menu to satisfy the ever-changing American palates. For example, the addition of Japanese cuisine, like sushi to their menu. What is keeping me from giving New Dragon five stars, is the low quality Szechuan dishes listed on the menu. For the past three years Sichuan/Chundu flavors have been all the rage in the culinary and Foodie scene. As evident in the rise of "Hot Pot" restaurants and an increase in all things "Mala" (spicy and numbing flavor). These dishes have heavily featured by food bloggers such Mike Chen's Simply Dumpling series, Food Ranger, and the Best Ever Food review show. Since I held New Dragon in high regard, I was expecting that the Szechuan dishes that are featured on the menu would have flavors of housemade chili sauce/oil, Szechuan peppercorns, and fermented bean paste. Ingredients that are widely available in Rhode Island market today. With that expectation in mind, I ordered was the Szechuan Tofu; which incorrectly assumed to be the ever-so popular Mapo Tofu dish. A dish that typically is wok-fried tofu suspended in a spicy/"Mala"oily sauce with ferment broad bean chili paste. What I got instead was cubed tofu with vegetables in a starch-slurried, almost flavorless, chicken broth. I was very disappointed to say the least. I am a big fan of New Dragon and I hope they see my review and consider improving the Szechuan dishes on the menu. Like I stated before these Ingredients are widely available now in the US; and many Americans are embracing these "new to them" flavors of the Szechuan region. I already know of another restaurant in the area that features updated Chinese dishes, to include spicy Yo Po mian (mein), street-food style savory chinese pancakes, hand cut/pulled noodles, and homemade dumplings & chili oil. New Dragon has an opportunity to continue their High quality Chinese-American fare while at the same time elevating their regional/authentic Chinese Cuisine. The advantage here, is they have the equipment and sourcing to bring in quality Chinese food; that no home cook can replicate (e.g. wok kei "Breath of the Dragon" flavors). I promise to change my rating if changes to the menu occur. read more

The food was good, the drinks were good, the service was good. There was only one interaction that made me and my party uncomfortable. The details are not important, only that there was a miscommunication between us and a single member of staff. I left a review on the restaurants website explaining what happened that night and the owner left a response accusing me of spreading misinformation and straight up lying. I would like to iterate that nothing in my original review was untrue. Could it have been phrased better? I'm certain it could have, I wrote the review before I took the time to organize my thoughts and feelings on the matter. There was a miscommunication, on whose end I can't be sure. But the response I received bordered on inappropriate. The incident left a pit in my stomach, and I have since removed the review from their website. Not that my business (or lack there of) makes any difference, but I won't be going back. Cool place. By far the cleanest and coolest bar and night time jamming place I've seen in a long time locally. Music was blastin. My walk in late night tofu to go order was kindly made and filled. This used to be our go-to Chinese place. I have no idea what happened to this place in the last year or so, but it has seriously gone downhill. New owner or management maybe? The food was horrible, and the scorpion bowl was hands down the worst drink I've ever had. It was so bad we couldn't even drink it. Fairly busy the night I stopped in. A bit of a wait for a table (for one), was seated in the upstairs area. Nice atmosphere, and the upstairs was very reasonably quiet (downstairs seating much more full and noisy). Service was reasonabley quick. Selection was the usual wide variety similar to many Asian restaurants. I was happy that their Shrimp with Lobster Sauce was of the brown variety (dislike the clear/white version). Food came out fairly fast, and was hot, and tasty. Although I'd been a bit wary of trying New Dragon due to some negative yelp reviews, I was quite happy with everything, and would definitely go again, and/or order take out. read more
