Oddly enough ... Good American-style Chinese food is hard to find in Rhode Island. I have not yet found a good spot ... and China Garden is no exception. Having said that, of the 7z or so, places I have tried in RI, AI would put this toward the top of the list (which isn't saying much). American-style Chinese food is my favourite junk food ... my guilty pleasure. For many years it has been my comfort food (I dove into a plate of Orange Chicken after failing my driving test in high school) and my New Year's Eve tradition (having waited an hour and a half in a freezing cold doorway at Cathay Garden last year). The bottom line is this is just average. You won't hate it ... but it's not as good as 80% of what you'd find in Massachusetts. Chicken Fingers ... This is the golf standard of how I judge good Chinese takeout. They were below average ... a thin, rubbery strip of chicken with around a 20% chicken to 80% breading ratio. The texture was odd, almost as if it was small pieces of chopped up chicken, reconstituted. They also tasted as though they had been soaked in chicken broth. The rice flour coating was good ... but there was way too much vs. the chicken making them too thin, too crispy and too dry. Crab Rangoon ... Incredibly garlic-powder tasting. They are the triangles of dough (normally my favourite kind) and not the little ball-shaped ones more common in Rhode Island. They were just overpoweringly garlic tasting for me. These cheese was cream-cheesy with a slightly sweet crab flavour. A little skimpy on the filling and way too much garlic. Eggroll ... Too small. This was spring roll-sized. Dry filling ... mostly cabbage and not much pork. Didn't have much flavour until dipped in the hot mustard or sweet and sour, which made it better. Didn't taste fresh and was too dry and bland. Pork fried rice ... Judging by the colour of the rice, I thought I'd be disappointed because this looked more like yellow Spanish rice. It actually tasted better than it looked. No egg pieces and very few pieces of onion but there were several thin pieces of pork in it. It needed tons of soy sauce and a small bit of hot mustard. Not the best fried rice I've ever had but I thought it would be worse. BBQ Pork Strips ... The BBQ sauce tasted more like Kraft BBQ sauce than the sweet pink Chinese sauce. Other than that, these were pretty typical of what you find elsewhere with a less BBQ/smokey flavour. General Tso's Chicken ... Meh. Not the worst but not the best. The chicken fingers are similar to the pieces of chicken you'd find in here. The sauce is very sweet and sticky but not as complex as some of the other places I've tried. Not much garlic and citrus to layer in with the sugary sweetness of the sauce here. Pan Fried Peking Ravioli (pork dumplings) ... The best dish they make. Perfectly pan seared on the sides, doughy and a nice pork flavour inside. The included soy/plum (?) dipping sauce was good and went nicely with the dumplings. I'd come back to order these. Condiments ... Gave a miniscule amount of hot mustard sauce compared to other places but it was homemade. Very hot but a bit too sweet. Duck sauce was more like runny applesauce. Homemade but not the best I've had. Overall, 3 stars might seem like a bad review ... but it's really average, which this was. I have been spoiled by the great Chinese food in Massachusetts. For some reason, some states just don't have good suppliers ... I find it odd that Chinese food looks/tastes different at each place in Rhode Island and none of it is great. If I were going to order Chinese food from any restaurant in Rhode Island, this would actually be at the top of the list, which is a sad commentary. read more

Very good American Chinese cooking, I agree with another review that it is hard to find in Rhode Island and this is the best by far. What i like the most is that it is not overly salty and not at all greasy. My only complaint is that it could be a little bit spicier! We are impressed with how clean the place is and how friendly the people are. Good value and generous portions, we usually order 2 lunch combos and a quart of soup and we eat the soup and egg rolls for lunch one day and split the combo for dinner (for 2) and split the second combo for lunch another day...so we get 3 meals each from 2 combos and soup ....It's worth the trip! read more

Solid American Chinese food! Already went back within a week. I really want to give this place 5 stars but some of the noodle dishes I've had (Chicken Lo Mein combo and Beef Chow Fun--which I can't believe they had!) continue to be a little bland. What they nailed were the Hot & Sour Soup (tangy, spicy, flavorful, with lots of contents) and the General Tso's chicken (dressed with a spicy but sweet thick orange sauce). Delish!! Their pork dumplings definitely live up to the hype! You can tell they're house made. The exterior is soft, chewy, and pan-seared. I probably would prefer the shell to be a bit thinner since it wasn't crispy like I feel most pork dumplings are when done right but I can certainly appreciate the homemade nature. Definitely stood out and the meat inside was awesome! It's the same meat they use for the wonton soup too (which other than wonton filling, I felt the broth was a tad bland). The special combos are a great deal to try a bunch of things. Got the General Tso's Chicken, Beef Teriyaki, and Chicken Fingers for our daughter as we never know what she'll go. The beef teriyaki was on a single skewer with tiny pieces of meat, a few onions and bell peppers. Good idea with the skewer but would've preferred 2 sticks instead of 1 and reduced number of chicken fingers, which were a thick battered chunky chicken (like a fried dough almost) as opposed to thin strips of chicken. They were chewy like the pork dumpling shell but decent. Came with a lot of yellow pork fried rice. Sesame chicken is breaded with good sauce (similar to General Tso's). Additional standouts: - The service was fantastic as I had originally asked for my chow fun noodles to be crispy (saw "extra fried noodles for $0.50" thinking it was an option but those are the little bags of soup toppings--ha!). Got a call back though to clarify they only sautée the noodles and don't pan fry so it doesn't get crispy. - Love that they have a loyalty card (buy 10 meals of $25+, get a $25 meal free). - The shop is in a cute plaza where you can window shop while you wait for your order. All in all, some solid dishes with a lot of dishes that I don't normally see in a typical Chinese takeout menu. I'm excited to try some more dishes! read more

Normally, I'd have low expectations for a Chinese restaurant located in a strip mall, but man, I was pleasantly surprised! This place is definitely worthy of its 4-star average! I had to go to Wakefield on Friday to get some electrical supplies, and originally planned to go to Chen's restaurant, which had been around for years. When I learned that Chen's had closed, I was unsure where to eat, but as luck would have it, I saw China Garden in the same plaza as the electrical supply store. I was even happier when I saw that China Garden had good reviews on Yelp! My stepson and I each ordered a lunch special, which includes an entree, fried rice and can of soda, for the bargain price of around $7! I got beef teriyaki; he got General Tso's chicken. It's aimed toward takeout, although there are three tables to dine in, if you desire. You can see the kitchen from the counter, and I must say, it's one of the cleanest kitchens I've ever seen at a Chinese restaurant. Service was very friendly. While the fried rice was yellow instead of brown, it was nowhere near bland (for some reason, bland fried rice seems to be an epidemic at Chinese restaurants in Rhode Island). China Garden's version of beef teriyaki also stood above the typical presentation of a boring slab of beef. Instead, it resembled a shish kebob, with pieces of onion and green pepper along with the beef, which was tender and flavorful. The stepson's a picky eater, so when he devours something, I know it's good. I tried a piece of his General Tso's chicken, and it was tender (both the meat and batter), not hard like most other restaurant's version of the dish. The sauce accompanying the chicken was quite delicious. Our meals were filling, as well as delicious and easy on the wallet. I now know where I want to eat lunch in Wakefield from now on! read more

Decent Chinese food. I frequently travel to the Wakefield area for business and this is my go-to Chinese place. I've tried a few dishes and most were very good. It's not extraordinary, however it is solid. That being said - I wouldn't recommend the rice noodle dishes - they are pretty bland. Prices are average - would recommend. read more

Stuck in Narragansett due to storm and came to get a quick fix of Chinese food. First time here and I confused this one with another local Chinese restaurant so I was crossing my fingers hoping it's decent. It was very busy and on the wall they showcased a newspaper article written 15 years ago about their little joint, saying how many restaurants the family own and run across America. I felt better. They must know what they are doing, so I thought. Boy was I wrong. Completely tasteless. My friend tasted it and said, "We could do better than this at home." A mixture of whatever + soy sauce doesn't make it Chinese food. I feel bad for the local customers. This is a terrible representation of Chinese food. As a matter of fact, it shouldn't be even called Chinese food. The chef should watch some Wang Gang videos on YouTube. That's how real Chinese chefs cook. read more

I simply do not understand the negative reviews. I have lived in typically metropolitan areas most of my life, but this is definitely some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. Not all of their dishes are home runs, but I can say with absolute confidence that their pork dumplings, chicken with garlic sauce, and chicken lo mein is amazing. First time here. Was great and very quick service. We walked up and placed our order. Staff was behind plexiglass that covered the entire opening to the kitchen area. Even set up so my credit card didn't get touched. Food was received through a small cabinet that opens on both sides. 5 stars for safety and timing. Food was average - Wonton Soup had no flavor and wonton wrappers were more like lasagna noodles. There were lots of wontons so can't complain about portion but too thick and chewy for my taste. Chicken and broccoli needed more sauce but flavor was good. Singapore noodles was just about all that - angel hair thin noodles and a little egg, chicken, pork and shrimp. Flavor was good but again mainly noodles. Was hard to serve as very little sauce so it clung together. Overall mediocre food. read more

It was my first time trying this place, the service was very fast as I had called in for an order, walked in and found a very "Covid safe place". They had plexiglass up to protect the kitchen from the patrons and the staff were all wearing masks correctly. My dinner was fear, different then what I have found at other Chinese restaurants. It is what it is: an heavily Americanized Chinese place. But even as a quick takeout spot it is still subpar compared to other American Chinese places I've been to. The food is fresh, but that's about the only positive thing I can say. The food is either bland or tastes overwhelmingly of soy sauce and nothing else. So glad this new Fu Jin region Chinese restaurant has come to Wakefield, since its only two country 'blocks' away fom me and it has the only good New York style Chinese food I found in this state, except for a little place in Jamestown, RI, which takes 15-20 to drive to. They have all the usual 'suspects' on the menu - I just started sampling their food - but the Shrimp with Lobster sauce was fresh and delectible with huge shrimp. Also, the white Young Chow rice was steamed and not greasy. Chicken chow Mein was tasty and heatlty. They don't use MSG, and their lunch specials from 11-3 are served Mon.-Sat. with Pork Fried rice & a Can of soda, and they run from just 4.30 to 5.55 for the most 'expensive' item. They have lots of spicy options, which I also love. The thing that I worry about is that people around here don't know the 'good' from the 'bad' or fake Chinese restaurants and that they may not make it as a year-round business. So, if anyone here in RI is reading this, trust me - its terrific - despite what your fellow Rhode Islanders may have said. (These are the people who think that bread should be served with Chinese food - you know who you are.) Yes, tastes vary, but I have eatern around the world, and this is some pretty good grub for the buck . It's also convenient and fast when you just don't feel like grilling or entertaining summer guests, or you'd just rather crank up your AC and watch a good movie. This will be my summer staple for those lazy or rainy days. And, sorry, kids, I won't be a slave to my gas grill - and its less expensive and faster than a run to the supermarket. And, dears, no need to worry if I have stocked my refrigerator and I have prepped enough food for my in-laws, either. So don't bother checking on me. Now if they could only bring (at least) some wine, and show some respect and stop reading my local circulars and papers. (I do have a lending library - all you have to do is ask - and you can go read at the beach - if you don't feel like talking). For those who dread the summer people's invasion to your place, this is a great option for taking care of them and your own 'dining' needs after the beach. I started coming here almost immediately upon my return to RI. This is a fantastic little Chinese restaurant that stands apart from the other 3 spots in town. The other Chinese joints in Wakefield and Narragansett are almost identical. Their menus are all similar and if you ordered the same dish from each, you would be hard pressed to tell which of those restaurants actually prepared it. I grew up on those menus and do appreciate them for what they are - but now that I've actually been to other parts of the country - I know that they are very "Americanized" versions of Chinese fare. The China Garden is refreshingly different, and closer to what you may find in Chinatown in Los Angeles or NYC - and what I would call more traditional Chinese food. It's very small and I always get my order, to go, but there are a couple of tables if you didn't want to drive your meal home. The kitchen is open so you can see the chef preparing the food, and everything I have ordered has been very fresh and delicious. The girl at the counter is super friendly as are any of the other staff I have interacted with. The prices are very reasonable, and you could easily eat your fill for under $10. I enjoy their soups more than anything; especially in the long, cold, dark, New England winter. The hot and sour soup at China Garden is hands down the best in town, and for under $5 for the large - may also be the best lunch/dinner deal in South County. The subgum wonton is also a favorite of mine. It's only available in large (again, under $5) and is stocked with shrimp, pork, beef and chicken with Chinese vegetables. The wontons are fried and served separate from the soup. They are large and meaty and fried, delicious and golden with a thin crisp outer layer. I usually cut them in half or quarters and put them into the soup - but they would also go well dipping in hot sauce or whatever you like to dip wontons or dumplings in. I have had a few of the other soups as well, and they were all delicious - but the two I mentioned are my personal favorites. I also really like the Singapore noodles, Mongolian beef and Szechuan chicken. I've had all three of these on multiple occasions and never been disappointed. I only went here because of the reviews; the picture made me skeptical bc it looks like a low quality place, I should have gone with my gut feeling, went in for pick up the lady asked if I wanted any sauce (apparently it doesn't come with it already) I ordered general tso chicken combo which comes with pork fried rice and a egg roll; I also got the crab rangoons. got it home (10 min drive) it was cold, I opened the container and it just looked disappointing, the general chicken had barley any sauce, the rice looked liked yellow Mexican rice, and the rangoons were fried into footballs, I work a fryer for my job and they were over cooked and their oil needed to be changed they were tough and very chewy, also I could only taste cheap cream cheese and onions (wtf) the egg roll was also over cooked. overall this is some of the worst food I have eaten in a while, that was the first thing I said after taking the first bite of chicken, and I am the kind of person who likes different foods and will try anything twice. on that note, I wouldn't go here if you paid me; I'm already feeling sick and I just finished eating. Overall positive review.. First off, don't be confused, this is more of a Chinese kitchen as apposed to a full fledged "restaurant". There are a few seats but it's definitely modeled more for takeout and delivery. The food was beyond adequate. Not the very best I've had but DEFINITELY not the worst I've had by far!! Fairly ordinary Chinese food, which is good if you hate surprises. The serving size was usual and left no disappointment. The service was friendly and quick. I received a free 2 liter of coke (I think because my bill was over $50). I was very pleased with my experience overall. I absolutely adore this place!! I am the most fussy person when it comes to chinese food, but I was eating here at least twice a week when I was living in RI. I moved to Jacksonville, NC and tried every single chinese restaurant in that town and nothing even came close. Now I am living in Denver, CO and I STILL have not found a place as good as China Garden!!!! Yeah, it's a take out place which can be a little inconvenient, but I would rather buy from this place and eat it in my crammed car then to settle for Chens or Dragon Palace (both places have gone completely down hill over the past 10 years) any day. Their Sesame Chicken is INCREDIBLE!!!!! They use white meat, and its never burnt or over cooked like other places. Every time I come home to RI I make sure to stop at China Garden at least once or twice during my visit!! I hope you guys never change and resort to poor quality ingredients to save a few bucks like some of the other chinese restaurants in the area did! read more

I would only go here if no other chinese place was open. I'd even go to Chen's before I went here. Their Rangoons are mushy, yellow and bleh tasting. Their General Tso's has a generic sweet and sour sauce. Their dumplings are very doughy with small balls of pork stuffing and drip with the water they're steamed in; the sauce that comes with them is salty and not very gingery or garlicky. Their fried rice is ok. It's hard to screw up fried rice (although some do, right Chen's?) Most of their pungent sauces are homologous and plain. This place doesn't really impress me. BUT if you are in Looneytunes II you can hear them in the kitchen! That can be entertaining sometimes! I might try there again since it's been 6 months since the last try (I've only taken out meals and orders since it's kind of small in their dining room,) and see if anything's changed. I've read the first review, and I don't agree with it. China Garden is not like Peking Garden. I like the food at Peking Garden enough to make that extra trip to Jamestown. And when we brought the food from China Garden to my brother's house his wife (from Hong Kong and Chinese,) wasn't as happy with it as the food from Peking Garden. The prices at China Garden are more expensive than Peking Garden. For anyone reading this review, try it for yourself. My Mother thought it was okay but she has a more delicate palate. (I'm not saying she has bad taste she doesn't, she just likes things that are not as spicy as the things I like.) read more
