It is always amusing when buffets try look like a palace, while trying to attract people wanting to spend under 10 bucks on a buffet style meal. Upon it's opening about a decade ago now, New China Buffet was exactly that image. It was a deviation from the run down looking buffets of it's time and introduced a grand entrance, with koi fish pond, statues, water features and lots of "gold" accents in a vast space. The selections were equally as vast and actually, quite tasty. Fast forward to today, it largely turned into the same places that it was putting out of business ten years ago. The design now looks pretty silly, with many elements starting to deteriorate. The food selections shrunk substantially, with several of the buffet sections being completely empty even for dinner. The sections that are there present food that is below average in quality even for buffet standards. The crowd of customers has largely surpassed any definition of obesity and looks as distressed to be eating this as the environment itself is. It's not very clean anymore and service is a get in and get out of here culture. After trying a number of items from the menu, I can't say a single one that I actually liked. The crawfish are tiny in size and flavorless. The chicken is bland and loaded with SMG to bring out some kind of flavor of the spices. The BBQ ribs are tough, flavorless as far as the meat itself goes and spiced in attempts to conceal the lowest quality meat possible. The desserts and coffee cake are dry, synthetic attempts at something edible. Returning here after many years was a wake up reminder of time and its unavoidable impact. A place that once flourished has fallen into complete despair, and not likely to stick around much longer. read more

The food was not good. I ordered broccoli and shrimp. The white rice was hard and the broccoli and shrimp did not have a brown gravy.

I came here with my mom and her boyfriend to eat. I had one plate and the next I made a salad. I had put a noticeable dent in my food the ranch tasted funny but overall it was ok when I noticed a price of hair in my food. It ruined my entire appetite. When I brought it to my waiter's attention he went to get his manager. Once the manager came he tried to accuse me of putting hair on my plate. Saying "This is curly hair we only have straight hair." I honestly didn't put anything in my food my hair is colored and in braids and my mom's hair is braided and her boyfriend has dreads. There is no way I would pull hair out of my braid and head just to get a discount that's insane. All I have to say is pay close attention to your food here. read more

You can tell they put a lot into the aesthetic here, which is great. But they lack good customer skills and the floors and tables are super gross. I came here today with my husband and two year old, to be sat by the host at a dirty table. When I said the table is dirty, he walked away and acted like he didn't hear. They give you plastic silverware, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when you get the frozen solid ice cream and can't eat it because the plastic spoon is breaking...that's kind of a bummer read more

This place has gone downhill in my opinion. It use to be a very respectful place when it came to Americanized Chinese buffet food but now? It's not even worth it with its reduced lunch price. The food was luke warm instead of piping hot on the hit bar, the sushi was above body temperature instead of slightly cool, the American food bland, and they replaced the scooped ice cream and fresh deserts with Dollar tree ice dairy desserts and cheap snack cake. The hibachi bar is terrible and slow. The meat there was barely on ice which I believe is health hazard so I avoided that. The server was lightly attentive and not really a serviceable guy. I hated that I wasted my money here as I should have went to the better buffer down the way but I had to meet someone this way. I suggest you save your money here and try another buffet. Quite possibly the largest Chinese buffet I've ever been to, New China Buffet is a little rough around the edges in terms of decor and some of their food, but the $5.99 (at the time of this review) lunch special more than makes up for it. You'd be hard pressed to find a restaurant that lets you eat that much for so little, and with plenty of options of meat, sides, and desserts there is sure to be something for everyone here. Even during the lunch rush, the place is big enough where you can be sure to always find seating, and staff is very friendly. Some might prefer a bit more of an authentic atmosphere, but as for me, the affordability makes this a go to location for lunch. read more

This is one of the better ones in town when looking at a run of the mill buffet. I have never had dinner at this restaurant but the lunch is great for what it is at the end of the day. They have a good selection of items and they have hibachi as well. The food is always hot and it is clean and well kept. This buffet is so much better than King Buffet down the street! I was brought here by some coworkers one Monday. I tried convincing them Chinese was better elsewhere, yet I hadn't eaten here yet. They have this chicken which is flavored magnificently. This broccoli dish which is too die for!! There's numerous dessert options. The pizza is a step up than others by size & flavor. Any true southerner has to have ranch with EVERYTHING. The ranch is made not too thin yet not too thick. King buffet is like water! I like how the wait staff is very attentive, clearing my every plate & not allowing my glass to reach half empty. Please be sure to tip generously y'all. We all like earn a good buck and they do their best to serve us. So don't be cheap!!! I'm amused by these people who complain of sickness and nausea. Well for one...you don't know what you're really eating (but it tastes good, so u enjoy it!). Lastly... msg is a high sodium additive used for seasoning not to mention the grease involved. You know in the days where gas is $3.50-$4 a gallon, posting these clearly false reviews of this place is really sad. Oh and the sign outside does not say New China Buffet III it says something like Super Buffet (maybe there was an owner change, which would explain the change in current vs past reviews) If you like Sushi with fish in it - Forget it! Looking for Crab legs - HAHAHAHA Forget it! I drove 15 minutes out of my way to visit this place, what a waste of gas and time for below average food. I went on a Thursday night at 7pm This place features BIGFOOT crab legs. Why do i call them BIGFOOT? Well it's because you think they exist, you never actually see them, or you catch a quick glance at them and then they are gone. I was in the place 40 minutes and they have a tray on the buffet where they should be, even a sign there, but they never arrived. On top of that, on the buffet there are two signs, one says "Please eat all you care to take and eat all you take" (or something like that) and then right next to that sign is a sign next to where the crab legs are "supposed to be" is a sign that says Please don't take more than 8 crab legs. I understand the sign because in other places I have witnessed someone stand there and take 90% of what comes out from the kitchen. Anyway, 40 mins on a weekday no crab legs were ever seen. And that's really a bait and switch, don't charge me a dinner rate when essentially the food is the same as the lunch buffet. let's talk about the sushi. If you love avocado, rice, imitation crab then you are in the right place. There is no nigiri sushi, its all rolls. Big rolls, little rolls, hand rolls. If you want anything in your sushi like tuna, salmon, shrimp, basically any fish, there are NONE here. There is a sushi bar where you can bribe a guy to cut you off a few slices of tuna he is guarding like gold (literally he has about 4 oz of tuna, salmon and yellow tail that he can make sushi from) but he expects to be tipped. Well I already paid $10.49 for the buffet, why should I keep throwing money around? Going back to imitation crab, if you like it, well this place is the imitation crab capital of the south. Imitation crab in the sushi, Imitation crab cakes imitation crab salad, hot and cold Several hot dishes where main ingredient is imitation crab. This place must go through 50-75lbs of the stuff every day!! Anyway let's be honest, Chinese buffets fall into two categories. The run of the mill ones and the ones where the food is great, the sushi is great, the high priced foods are plentiful because the volume allows it. This is not one of those places. If you want to binge on below average food for $10.49 here is another place for you. My husband and I saw the sign for $5.49 lunch buffet on weekdays and decided to try this (and lunch goes until 4pm!). Our first experience was really good. The staff were really friendly and checked on us often. The buffet selection was huge! There are a lot of options to choose from. Obviously if you grab a lot to start with, most of it will be cold by the time you return to your table. So it's important to get a few things you want as a smaller portion and just return to the buffet when you're ready. Most food items are flavoursome and enjoyable but some items can be bland. Luckily with a buffet you can choose as much as you like of the good items you find. It's great that they have sushi too, but I would like it if they labelled what was in the sushi so I could choose easier. Their dessert section is quite large too and includes fruit, cakes, cookies, pies and ice cream. A great selection. Overall, the interior is clean, well lit and nicely decorated. A great selection of food for a bargain price! We have been back since our first visit and I'm sure we will go again. read more

This was my first time eating at a Chinese Buffet in Birmingham. First time coming to this place and the selection was HUGE. They even have the Hibachi section but I didn't try it since I thought it was closed (it wasn't) and they had sushi as well which I didn't try since I didn't want to get too full. The food tasted so good and fresh, so much to offer and so little stomach to hold so much. Spicy shrimp was EXCELLENT, and according to my wife, the salmon was as excellent as well! Not going to lie, I was very skeptical about coming to New China Buffet. It's not in the best of neighborhoods, but the parking lot was always PACKED. Something had to be up, so my husband and I decided to give it a try one Sunday afternoon. To our surprise, the inside of the restaurant was very open and clean. There's several booths and tables for their customers to sit at. It's a big building. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We were in and out of the restaurant within 30-45 minutes. Price was super cheap! It's your normal buffet spread, but it also included sushi, hibachi and fried foods. They had several different types of Chinese chicken, such as sesame chicken and honey chicken, however they all tasted the same. Good though. I was satisfied with their egg rolls and noodles. Unfortunately, I did not like the egg drop soup. It had a weird taste. Overall it was a good and surprising lunch. For the price and selection of food, I can see us returning soon. read more

I almost feel dirty writing or admitting this, but I have a soft spot for Chinese buffets done well. NCBIII does a great job with what it is: All things to all people. Sushi? I guess so. They have a lot but I rarely eat it. It's not bad, it's just buffet sushi. But at least it's not "just" mayo based rolls with Krab. Chicken on a stick, salt and pepper chicken, hot and sour and wonton soups, hibachi bar, fried donuts, etc. Sometimes the "Seafood" options are even pretty good (ie Crab legs? Check if you are quick! They actually had fried ones recently that were fantastic.). My 4 YO daughter is in hog heaven at this place. My only concern is service is as expected, probably because 75% of buffet diners do not tip. All I need is regular plate clearing and to keep the drinks refills coming. Who goes to buffets looking for decor? Come on now. Formica and old school decorations. read more

I come from the land of sushi and Asian buffets so when my boyfriend saw the reviews for this place, he knew this was going to be an inevitable stop for lunch at some point in our stay in Birmingham. I know it's unfair to compare this sort of buffet to the ones back home but I honestly felt the food here was very, very mediocre at best. It wasn't any better than the Asian buffets I even had in Auburn. The winning points of this buffet are the variety of food that make up for the lackluster taste. If you have a craving for every kind of fried entree, there's a bar for that. The hibachi bar is like any other hibachi bar you've ever been to. There's also every flavor of Chinese chicken you'd ever be curious about. The sushi selection was not good. You have the typical selection of 2 fancy rolls, 2-3 regular fish on top of a roll of rice, and the rest that look and taste the same plus or minus one condiment. Nothing from this area stood out except for the sushi sandwich. The mayonnaise shrimp was disgustingly great. That was the only entree item I came back to have again. Save your stomach for the ice cream bar. They have 10 flavors of ice cream ranging from sherbet to mint cookie, cookies and cream, apricot, strawberry, and all the typical flavors you'd expect. The service was wonderful. The staff here may not understand much or any English at all but they do seem genuinely invested that you have a pleasant dining experience with them. read more

So I realize this is a Chinese buffet in Irondale, AL, so I wasn't expecting much. But it was even a little worse than expected. The decor is like a fancy hotel from 20 years ago that got converted to a Chinese buffet. Kind of cool even though a little weird, probably my favorite part of the experience. I'd say about 25% of my hot food items were even warm at all. Most everything was cold. The meats tasted old. All the American type items were terrible. The best thing was the sushi, better than gas station sushi. Seaweed salad on rice was pretty nice actually. All the desserts tasted like they were from a box. The only reason I tried this place was because they had a sign for $5.49 lunch buffet, but that's only on weekdays, so I paid $11 for this crap. If you're desperate and super hungry, maybe give it a shot for the decor. Otherwise, there's much better places for lunch in Irondale. read more

Kids running around, people waiting for seafood to be delivered to the buffet and immediately filling their plates with fried shrimp and crab legs leaving nothing to the other patrons. Just got home from eating at New China Buffet in Irondale, AL.The last time we ate at this restaurant for lunch it was $5.99 per person. Today lunch was $12 per person. The food was absolutely horrible. The chicken & beef on the stir fry bar were bad (slimy, smelled really bad & had a milky white film on it). Both were so slimy that it slid out of the tongs before you could get it to your plate. I reported it to the manager, but he did nothing (they were still on the buffet table when we left about 45 minutes later). Some of the hot foods were cold. The steamed salmon was dry. Some of the fried chicken & vegetables were overcooked (broccoli being one). The cakes & cookies were dry. The sushi & the fresh fruit were good, but not worth the price. We will not eat here again & can't recommend it to anyone. read more

The food was cold and tasted old, the crab legs were mostly hollow when you cracked them open, and I discovered a bug (looked like some type of roach) in my food. I was eating some of their sherbert and realized there was an item that wasn't the same texture as the sherbert in my mouth and when I spit it out it was a bug!!! My sister called the manager to our table and his response was simply that he could get me a few scoops of sherbert from an unopened container that they had in the kitchen. For your health's sake stay away. It's nasty as in buffet was not wiped down, carpet was soured and smelled awful and food was air dried as in having set out a long time. The macaroni and cheese had dried around the edges. Kids were allowed to prepare their plates when they weren't even tall enough to see what they were getting. We would have left but......give this this one a ZERO. Health department needs to close this one! Sad! read more

I used to be an enormous fan of this buffet. However, over the last 3 times coming here as of late, the food quality has seem to decline a bit. Everytime the fiance and I come here now, we always feel gross and drowsy after. The last time we came here (2 days ago), I considered throwing up to overcome that feeling. Not sure what it is..... The fiance and I have been here over 20 times total. It seems over the last 4 months or so something has changed..... The sushi is decent if you're lucky and they put out good stuff. This is the only place where you can get decent crab legs at a buffet, so this place does have that going for it. But now I feel, if I don't want crab legs, I'm better off going to other chinese buffets closer to Bham. read more

Located in the main Crestwood shopping plaza next to Food Smart and across the parking lot from Home Depot. Here is a buffett that is more along the styles of what I am used to. I believe the selection is better than Top China Buffet in Hoover, which has been the best regional (Chinese) buffet in my opinion up to this point. 5 stars taking the the regional situation into consideration. Nice large sushi selection (although I think almost all of it is cooked or vegetarian, even though there is an oyster counter next to it, so I have no idea what the raw-seafood regulatory story for buffets is anymore...). I noticed a Sysco condiments container on a shelf behind the sushi prep area. Nice potstickers that look homemade. They even have shumai in the steamer baskets next to fancy mandarin rolls in the soup area. They also have a bunch of american-style food that's pretty nice, like baby back ribs and the some of the southern staples (fried catfish and tilapia, crawfish, spicy shrimp). Some of the more unique dishes include chicken-ball kabobs and stuffed jalapeno peppers. There is a Cici's Pizza-style salad selection (in giant bowls) if one so desired. The seaweed salad and kimchi were quite disappointing though. Otherwise it's a meat lover's paradise; veggies need not apply (I don't even remember seeing the usual sauteed string beans, although they had the mushroom dish...). The fried rice is light on the soy sauce and doesn't have any tumeric, so it's not yellow and looks very homey. They are however missing the mei fun. The decor looks very gaudy. Lots of flatscreens if you're into that thing, but you'd have to request a table near one, there is a giant fountain as you walk in, there is a sculpture gallery lining the wall, and one of the walls also has egyptian hieroglyphics chiseled in sandstone. $12ish for buffet dinner (that was with a drink), again probably due to crablegs, but $3.99 for seafoodless buffet takeout; $4.99 otherwise. I believe they have a completely separate take-out menu as well. On weekdays, doesn't start to get busy until 7ish. read more

We left out the building 3 workers come running out talking about I didn't pay!! What the crazy thing about it was the Man behind the counter who I paid was one of the workers running out.. I showed the receipt and one of the workers who confronted me she was still looking at the receipt like it was fake!!!! I will never support a business who treats their customers like this!!!
