To my knowledge, this is the only sushi restaurant in Avalon. Knowing that, I still would not recommend NDMK Fish House for their sushi. I recognize that I have high standards due to living in Southern California where first class sushi restaurants abound, but I was not impressed by NDMK Fish House. My boyfriend and I tried the Farnsworth Bank and Avalon rolls.The Farnsworth Bank roll was *smothered* in unagi sauce and spicy mayo (which I personally hate bc it takes away from the fish which is supposed to be the main attraction). I'm not sure how the Farnsworth is one of their top sellers because it was so bland and quite untidy looking. The proportions were also off with little-no cucumber, avocado, jalapeño on the inside and too much "spicy" tuna on the top. A good roll needs these other components to have a variety of textures because without a good crunch, and in combination with a ton of sauce, it's all quite mushy. We also got the "Da Bomb Shrimp" for an appetizer which was drenched in Sweet Thai chili sauce which, in all fairness, is how it's described in the menu. However, it was far too sweet in my opinion. It is a generous portion for an appetizer at 8 pieces. The service also left much to be desired for--we had to ask multiple times for napkins and bowls for soy sauce. Two different workers also said they would check about the status of one of the items we ordered, neither of them ever came back to give us an update, and then by the time we were done with our meal we had to be the ones to ask for it to be taken off our bill. Typically I can be forgiving if the restaurant is busy or they're short staffed, but neither of those things seemed to be true. We didn't try any of the fish entrees so perhaps those are better, but personally I would recommend Bluewater if you're looking for seafood in Avalon. read more

I was so excited to try this restaurant despite all the mixed reviews. The service was good, the people were nice, but the only issue is that one person in my party wound up getting sick a few hours after our meal - we suspect it was mild food poisoning. We think it's from the oysters bc both of us recall the taste of them was not quite right. The fish and chips (halibut) was meaty and good. The sushi rolls were decent too, but lesson learned to be careful when choosing this restaurant as they may not be storing / preparing the food properly. I felt nauseous after a few hours later and couldn't stomach to eat anything for dinner. The person with me suffered from a case of mild stomach cramps and diarrhea that carried into today (the day after our meal). Again, we really wanted to love this place. Good service, nice people but an unfortunate miss on at least one of the seafood dishes. :( read more

Ndmk=endemic (=local) I do love supporting locally owned businesses on this little island! And this place is great. They have some incredible fresh seafood. You can order some classics like a poke bowl, chowder, shrimp burrito, or sushi rolls. Or you can order from their catch of the day menu. NDMK (Pronounced Endemic) was such a great first experience on Catalina. I honestly forgot what kind of fish and chips I got, but it was so freakin good. The batter was crispy and the fish was tender. I Honestly couldn't ask for a better first meal. They had these fries called togarashi fries, highly recommend it. It's spicy and smoky which complement their fries very well. The lobster bisque was pretty good as well. Little too salty for my own personal taste, but I could see how other would enjoy it. Didn't really taste too much lobster but you could definitely taste the essence of it. My only complaint is that it opens so late. If it opened an hour or even a half hour early, I'd be all about it. But I kinda been learning that this is the island vibe here. Everything opens kinda late. 11:30 I feel is a little late for a restaurant but at the end of the day, it don't matter what time you open if you got great food to back it up. read more

My wife would've gave it five stars if she was doing the review. Lol. I had yellowtail sashimi and "got crab" rolls. It was good but my wife had a salmon bowl that she absolutely loved. I'm thinking it's probably one of the top one or two seafood places on the island. read more

This was exactly the kind of seafood restaurant I was looking for during my visit to Catalina: someplace casual with quality fresh fish. We went for lunch and I really enjoyed the fish tacos with the fresh locally caught white seabass which I appreciated was grilled rather than deep fried. read more

We all left with a bit of a stomach ache. However, the staff service was very good and they were very accommodating. We got the B roll, which we returned for being too heavy and you couldn't taste the fish only the cheese. The ring of fire roll was better than the b roll. It just isn't worth the price for the quality. We also got the burger which had way too much sauce and the burger was burned on one side so we didn't finish it. The truffle fries were also soaked in oil but were tasty. Probably wouldn't return. read more

The customer service is BAD! They don't welcome you and make you wait when ample tables are available. Then, they make you sit where you don't want to sit (saying it's policy). Manager's response is untrue. Also, look at other reviews which say similar responses regarding accommodating customers. read more

Food was good when we finally got it. They forgot about our table for 30+ minutes while serving all other around us. We called for the waiter who asked if we would like to pay. I said we would like our food with an incredulous look on my face. Don't come here if you don't have time to wait an hour after ordering to get your food. I had a great meal at NDMK on February 1, 2022. After riding my bike to the airport earlier in the day (and getting lost leaving Avalon after an hour-long climb up a steep hill), I was ready to put the big hurt on some food and drink! I entered the restaurant around 4:30PM and was greeted right away from a friendly guy named "Patrick." I knew I was in the right place, karma? My name is Patrick too. Lol. I ordered a good IPA on draft - Fuzzy Fox. Perfect! For dinner, I ordered sushi rolls: A Farnsworth Bank roll and a Rainbow Roll - both excellent, filling and overall satisfying! In all, my visit to NDMK was relaxing, delicious and fun. Yes, fun - I enjoyed talking to Patrick and few "locals" who wandered in for dinner. Total winner, 5 stars! read more

I was on vacation on Catalina Island and just really wanted some sushi! You'd think there would be a sushi place on every corner since it's an island but no, not really. Found this place and was not disappointed. Shared four rolls and had a couple of beers for an amazing lunch. That atmosphere was really cool, like a surfer vibe. Young staff that was super friendly and chill. Food was really yummy andntasted super fresh. Totally hit the spot. Good place to visit for your seafood fix. Stopped by when we were on the island, and the seafood was fresh. We came here right after we got off the boat and still had our luggage, but the workers find a nice spot for them and we were able to eat without having to worry about them. Place is a little small and crowded. read more

I don't understand the hype. We tried going here around 1pm and it was crowded. All the tables were full, we were there for about 10 minutes, and no one had gotten their food so we left. We went again for takeout around 4pm before the dinner crowd to try it again because of the hype. The guys running the place don't know what they're doing. They gave me a number with my receipt and after 15 minutes I checked in to find my order sitting there with a totally different number -_- The fish didn't taste fresh, the rice was not sushi rice, and the poke bowl was small considering the cost. read more

This place is consistently amazing with both service and quality of food. Tonight, especially, confirmed my respect for the restaurant and employees. They were all confronted with an EXTREMELY disrespectful diner and they handled it with finesse, patience, and kindness. The entire restaurant was aware of this disgusting woman, and there is no way I could have maintained the composure and professionalism that this team displayed. Hats off to KJ for keeping a smile and positive attitude even during one of the rudest moments I have ever witnessed. NDMK has become one of our favorite places to eat on the island. Came here on a holiday weekend so the place was busy and had over an hour wait but pro tip - place a to go order you get it quicker and you can go enjoy it with ocean views rather than sitting inside! Service is great and friendly and the food is solid, my only critique is it's wayyy too salty for a poke bowl and needs more sauce. Other than that you can't beat fresh seafood near the water! read more

OMG!! This place is amazing! The seafood is so fresh! Ordered the clams in white wine sauce, clam chowder soup and a roll. The clams in the white wine broth was divine. So flavorful. We came here for dinner and wanted something light so we each got the Poke Bowl and it was perfect. The portion size was just right and all the ingredients tasted fresh. They ask if you want tuna or salmon and I requested to get a mix of the two which they did. Also you can choose rice or salad or a mix of both. We both got a mix of the rice and salad and that was good. Good and friendly service. Comfortable sit down restaurant. Good selection of entrees, especially for fresh fish. If I were hungrier I would have gotten one of the fresh fish. We would definitely return to this place. read more

Ordered a tuna poke bowl and teriyaki chicken bowl for take out from this spot last night. I was hoping for brown rice, but since it was close to closing they didn't have that option anymore for poke bowl so I settled for all greens. I wish I could say it was a great choice, but honestly it wasn't one of the best poke bowls. I can't tell you much about the teriyaki bowl as it was for my mom and she basically will eat anything. We had the rockfish tacos with side salad, and clam chowder with a side salad. The rockfish tacos were good, with a nice slightly spicy sauce. Lots of fish. The clam chowder was good, but the butter in it reminded me of The Old Spaghetti Factory's Mizithra cheese pasta sauce. Definitely buttery. The side salads were sizable. My family and I visited Catalina island during spring break. We didn't expect much when searching for a place have lunch. However, we were pleasantly surprised by NDMK Fish House. We arrived and the staff was quickly seating guests. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and delicious. The price was reasonable given the location. This place was absolutely incredible!! Me and my friends had just arrived on the island and gotten settled and were starving for some seafood so we stopped by NDMK down the street. This was easily the best restaurant on the island for us, so much so that we came here twice! I ordered the fish and chips with white seabass, and my friends ordered various sushi rolls and the deep drop burrito. Heavenly. The fish and chips had a really nice crispy even breading, which wasn't too thick and kept the fish nice and moist inside. The tartar sauce was a perfect pairing and the lemon wedge was a nice touch for some acidity. But probably the fan favorite item was the deep drop burrito. Filled with rice, shrimp, pico de gallo, and more this burrito was perfectly executed and tasted delicious. Besides the food our service was phenomenal both times we went. They were super packed and the server was on top of everything and extremely helpful with our orders. Overall it set a great tone for our catalina island trip. read more

Went around 1 in the afternoon and we waited a couple minutes to sit as they cleaned the table real quick. Once we sat, the place was pretty crowded with a mixed crowd of people of all ages. The music playing was 90s alternative rock's best hits, which was amazing! I got a beer (the hazy ipa, not sure what it was) which was light and delicious. For food we got the East End and Got Crabs rolls. Both were so good and the East End roll had a nice spicy kick to it. We also got the Deep Drop Burrito which was also really good. A hint of spice with rice that made it pretty filling. If we weren't leaving tomorrow we would be back. read more

Started reminiscing about being able to travel, and I remembered one of my first poke experiences. It was at Catalina Island! Avalon's NDMK Fish House made it a very positive and memorable one. The food is as local as you can get, because the stars of the dishes literally come from the island's bays and harbors and whatnot. Poke Bowl was expensive for the little bowl I got, but it had fresh chunks of fish, delicious flavors, and fun textures. Also bummed that the sushi roll/burrito was pretty skinny, but at least the components inside were yummy and refreshing. It's more of a fast-casual spot where you order up front and then find a table. Overall: small portions, but they have quality ingredients that were not super rich or heavy, and they tasted good. I have yet to stumble upon a similar poke style on the mainland. read more

I got the burger (with cheese) based on a recommendation ... and was disappointed. The menu description sounded pretty good (with Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, ponzu aioli, teriyaki, and a brioche bun), but it was pretty bland. The cheese wasn't melted and the bun was pretty basic. Amazing service Super not impressed with the fish cuts They actually have very fresh fish but have no idea how to prepare it! The salmon and tuna sushi should never taste the same! So there's a right way to prepare fish for sushi and a wrong way. If it's not the one right way of clearing the spine asap as to remove bacteria then it's just gutted and filleted (wrong way) You can taste the difference... by a lot Plus the fish pieces were not the best cut. Yes they use sharp knives now they are not sushi cut. Oh never complain with more unless it makes whatever is it worse. When you have a piece of sushi you can't even chew because it's too thick and cut improperly that's the wrong way. This place has fresh fish and amazing service But the overall quality... I'm super surprised about! Gross tartar sauce (this one was also surprising!) Plus my salmon salad was over cooked with the salmon crunchy but the worst was the thin over cooked calamari (more like tiny sea French fries but the thin burnt ones on the bottom) I won't be returning unless for drunken beer food but there's a lot of other choices for that read more

My wife and I visited for lunch on a port day from our cruise boat, with service and food being a mixed bag. We arrived around 11:15 and it hadn't gotten busy yet. Thus, there was really no hostess to direct us, so we ended up going past the open tables in the patio, and headed for the bar area where there were bartenders and people seated. The bartender didn't really make an effort to look around, so I asked one of the waiters/busboys standing around if I needed to order from the bar. He affirmed it, but with sort of a smirk. So we had to get the bartender's attention, ordered our food, and with him asking if we wanted something to drink, getting a tourist margarita. Also asked for a glass of ice water, and got a bottled water instead. He mentioned that the food would be delivered to us, so we went our way looking for a place to sit. His attitude was kinda of a 'Whatever' throughout. Everything was prepaid, but I did leave a tip since the food was being delivered to us. It was a sunny day, so we went to some open tables with shade from where we had entered the club. As we sat down, a waitress came towards with a big smile and menus. I let her know we had already ordered from the bar...at this point, she told us that this section was reserved for people getting table service. She didn't explicitly say we had to leave, but she implied it. So we did. We ended up sitting at the bar, right in front of the bartender who took our order. This did make it easy for the food to be delivered on paper plates, and it tasted really good (with very tourist prices, and small portions): Crispy Orange Chicken Wings (6 pieces for $19) - this is one case where getting those jumbo wings like Wingstop has, would have helped with swallowing such a high price. Chicken Lettuce Wraps ($20) - This was really well made and delicious. It also came with very fresh iceberg lettuce leafs and the dressing on top was excellent. Bottled Water ($2) Blood Orange Margarita ($16) - this was delicious, but small...forgot to take a picture, but it was served in a tumbler/highball with plenty of ice. One nice thing is that the public wi-fi for Desscanso worked well, and it was free (didn't require any sort of PII to be entered). This area also has wifi for public use, but costing money. For whatever reason, our cellular didn't work well here, so wi-fi was definitely appreciated. There's definitely a competition between the bar area and the full service area. It honestly pissed me off a bit. I do think it mattered greatly when we came. I later did see signs stating that there was a section where food would be ordered from the bar, but it would have helped if the original guy I had asked, had explained it to us. As we were leaving (giving up our seats to people waiting), I saw the other bartender (who began her shift a bit after we had ordered) hustling to greet new guests and finding space for them to sit, and clearly giving recommendations. But its clear the employees are not working together, with the customer at the center. And for that main reason, our experience wasn't very good.
