Took a day trip to Catalina and this was our first stop for lunch. Our party of 5 was seated right away around 11:30 am on a Monday. The outside seating is absolutely beautiful. We were able to get a table right on the water and overlooked the entire bay as we ate. Note: They only serve bottled water due to a water shortage and I believe it's $1.50 per bottle. For appetizers, we got the Crispy Calamari ($21) and Baked Crab and Artichoke Dip ($20.50). The calamari was fried perfectly and so tender. The dip was really flavorful but the chips were a little too oily. To share, we got the Sautéed Sanddabs ($28), San Francisco Cioppino ($40), Beer-Battered Fish & Chips ($26), and New York Strip ($46). The sanddabs were cooked perfectly and so flavorful. The Cioppino was full of fresh seafood with a good variety. The fish in the fish and chips were pretty small and the steak was standard. The clam chowder was good to start, and the bread service was great. - The Oysters - should be renamed Teenage Mutant Ninja Oysters. They were enormous and tasted like fish that had been left out a bit too long. - The Old Fashion on their menu tasted more like Old Water. There was so much extra water and un-needed ingredients it did not resemble an Old Fashion at all. - The steak had NO seasoning at all. There was so much fat I got maybe three bites out of the 14 oz steak. The waitress looked at me with concern, but I was so over the meal I just smiled and asked for the check. - We ordered a mocktail, but it was so bitter it had to be sent back. - The fish and chips were decent, but came out cold. Was super excited to get some seafood while visiting Catalina and we scored at Bluewater! The patio was absolutely lovely. Great views, and well shaded. I love that they have a very healthy kids menu that comes with crayons and some fun activities. We started with some drinks and oysters. The oysters were delicious and fresh! My drink was OK, it didn't taste that strong but it came with a shrimp in it which is fun! My son's lunch was pretty epic. It came in a bento box with veggies, fruit, a big grilled cheese and choice of juice. My husband and I split the fisherman's basket but I wasn't aware they charge you more to split plates. That's a bummer. Loved all the seafood the dish included and it's definitely enough for two people to split, you're just going to pay more if you do. Service was good, so no complaints there. I would return next time I am visiting! There was a line forming before the place even opened so I imagine it can get pretty busy. We went to Bluewater Grill on Catalina Island for my birthday at the end of April, and overall I would say it was a good experience. The atmosphere was probably my favorite part. We sat outside with a really nice view, the weather was warm and pleasant, and overall it just felt like a very relaxing birthday dinner by the water. We both ordered fish, and it was good. Nothing super unique or unforgettable, but definitely tasty. The oysters were also fresh and really enjoyable. The only thing that felt a little off was the service. The food took a while to come out, and different servers kept coming to the table, which made things a bit confusing at times and caused some mix-ups with our order. But overall, we still left with a good impression. They even brought out a birthday dessert for me at the end, which was a nice touch. I'd say it's a solid 4 stars for me. We arrived at Bluewater Grill around 5-ish, just before the dinner rush, and requested patio seating. They immediately walked us over to a side patio overlooking the ocean--honestly the perfect setup for those early evening, golden hour views. This is one of my regular stops when in Avalon. Their food is consistently good and, perhaps because they are part of a larger chain, their hours are consistent, which wasn't the case with some other local restaurants during my recent visit. Some of them just never bothered to open when weather forced the cancellation of all boats on 2 separate days. I was the only diner this visit, although there were a few locals in the bar. The large outdoor area with great views was closed due to the wind and rain. I ordered fairly simply--clam chowder and the sauteed sanddabs. The New England style chowder was thick as expected with a decent amount of clams, served with oyster crackers. The sanddabs were nice, prepared picatta-style with lemon, butter and capers, served with scalloped potatoes and spinach. I fortunately also got a hunk of their excellent sourdough bread, and an iced tea that luckily included refills, since Bluewater probably does not offer free tap water but charges for bottled, like all the other restaurants here. First time visiting Catalina and stoped by Bluewater grill for lunch with a group of 7 girls. They have TONS of patio seating and we came on a Saturday in early May, 12pm and it was a short 20 min wait (i don't believe they take reservations so be sure to put your name down first!). Can only speak to what I got but complimentary sourdough bread was so fresh and warm and entree portions are big too! I got the rainbow trout, came lightly breaded with green beans and scalloped potatoes. For the price you pay I definitely think it's a good portion. Perfect experience on Catalina Island. I had the house cocktail and even splurged for the souvenir mug which I love. Calamari was great and the edamame was wonderful. I was disappointed that a recent storm had kept delivery of some of the options but what we had we loved. After the hike to the Wrigley memorial we deserved the treat. Upon arrival, I was worried this would be a tourist trap since the restaurant is located on the main street right next to the water, however turned out to be a great experience and the best meal of the trip! We dined on Sunday evening, and had no wait for a table. Saturday night appeared to have a line out the door, so would recommend Sunday or a weekday for dinner. Also note that dining closes at 8pm on Sunday's, which felt early for a weekend. (This seemed common across the island - closing early on Sunday.) I ordered the Gold Spotted Sea Bass, and it was one of my favorite meals of the year! If you're an actual foodie and enjoy seasoning on your food I do not recommend coming here. The ambiance is the whole reason people come here (including us) to sit on the water and yes that was lovely. Service was okay about a 30 min wait for walk in and we hardly saw our server but I understand since it was a holiday weekend. My issue is the poor food execution. We wanted drinks and apps. I got a mojito and tasted no mint in it just liquor and lime and a lack of bubbles. My girlfriend got the gone with the gin and said it was watery. We ordered the clams in wine sauce, crab & artichoke dip, and chowder. Chowder was pretty good! Especially being from SF area and Monterey we can be picky. That was probably the only good thing here... They didn't reduce the wine sauce enough so it was too bitter. Tasted like clams and someone just poured some chardonnay on top and called it "sauce". Crab & artichoke dip was so bland. They were relying on the cream cheese and jalapeños as flavoring but news flash those are not spices. I couldn't taste the crab at all as it had no presence of any seafood flavorings. Looking at my dip its clear they used imitation crab instead of the real thing.
