One of my favorite places in Pittsburgh! There are so many birds to see and habitats to explore. I especially love the Penguins and flamingos. A delightful way to spend some time enjoying the beauty of creation indoors. It's also available on the RAD pass, so you can visit once per year for free,

Gorgeous birds up close! From small to large and in a variety of habitats. The parking lot was full, but we found a good street spot on a busy Spring Break Monday. The admission fee is kind of high relative to the size of the facility, but this is a unique place that will appeal to all ages.

On our last day in Pittsburgh before catching our flight home, we had a little extra time to kill before heading to the airport. We decided to come to the national aviary and check it out. After parking on a nearby street, we made our way inside and easily purchased tickets at the front desk. They had a variety of other experiences that we could have upgraded to such as feeding certain birds or getting to interact with some birds in an intimate setting, but we just wanted to check out the space. We walked through all of the exhibits and enjoyed getting to learn so much about the different climates and habitats of the various birds. If you are looking for something to do in the downtown Pittsburgh area and are a bird lover, or just simply looking to learn a little bit more about our feathered friends, I would recommend coming to the national aviary.

What an underrated joy it is to have the National Aviary in our city. My family visits a couple times a year and we really enjoy it here. There is such an interesting variety of birds and related species. The penguin area is always a clear highlight. You can duck or crawl into the exhibit and emerge from a plexiglass tube to look at the penguins more closely, or get a cute photo op. They are all characters with personalities and everyone has their name on a band, so they get to be known among visitors. Today we did a penguin encounter which is limited to eight people booked in advance to spend some time learning a little more about them and then visiting up close and personal with one. Our little penguin buddy Wyatt liked to zoom around the room at top speed which was hilarious. We got to touch him gently and get a sense of what his glossy, slick feathers felt like. Really fun! When you check in for general admission you can also consider doing a smaller add-on experience or two for just a few dollars, such as hand feeding the lorikeets, colorful birds that will sit on your arm. But really you don't need to pay for anything additional here to have a great time. Just checking out all the species, some of which walk around amongst you, and stopping by any scheduled events like talks that they will mention to you when you check in, is more than enough. They are very involved with wildlife preservation and conservation organizations here. They do children's birthday parties, it's a popular spot for a weddings and special events, and there is a yearly night in the tropics fundraiser that is really fun with lots of local restaurants providing food and good entertainment. During regular visit days the café, which is small but has a nice little selection of items such as chicken fingers, fries, pizza and ice cream bars, is run by local restaurant Atria's. There's also a gift shop which offers a lot of items for children, from stuffed animals to educational games, and Jewelry, branded wearables and housewares for adults.

What a great spot to check out! The aviary is a lovely place to go when the weather is yucky.. or not. I try to plan my visit when there is a monthly brunch event. The food is catered by Atrias and is honestly some of the best brunch in the city + it is all you can eat, buffet style. The facility is very clean, and employees go above and beyond to help answer questions.

    Kelly B.

We went for Holiday Brunch. Atrias had a buffet style meal and a cash bar setup. I got an alcoholic hot chocolate which I did not really enjoy. It was a little strong and hard to drink. The buffet was ok, a lot of the food was frozen food, like the chicken and waffles. The aviary was decorated nicely for the holidays. I really enjoyed seeing all of the birds, especially when it was snowing.

We were in the area and we saw this place with a small line out the door. We didn't have plans after breakfast so we just hopped in line. We were shocked how much fun we had here. We lucked out and saw most of the feeding time for each room and we saw the birds interact with the Aviarists and some crowd participation. The birds look like they are happy. Interesting is that they have a bird called Floyd and he's almost 39 years old. He knew when was feeding time and was there ready to go. We also did SkyDeck which is only available during the summer and it's to showcase 4-5 birds and how they fly around and eat. It lasts about 20-25 minutes, but definitely wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The beating sun was no joke and we had to constantly look upwards to see the birds fly around. Overall fun time even without kids. My favorite are penguins because I think they are cute.

My wife and I went here for a Sunday Christmas brunch. Catered by Atria's, the food was pretty tasty and had plenty of options. Open bar was a nice touch too. The aviary is beautiful and there's a bunch of birds to see. You can even walk through some of the enclosures. It was super snowy and the birds were still out and enjoying it, so did we!

Visited for the 1st time in probably 20 years with daughter, daughter in law and grandson...ample metered parking on street....allot of free viewing of birds from around the world...great tutorial on the penguins...place was very clean as well as the bathrooms...2 1/2 hours was plenty of time to cover it all and see a presentation...

Traci, Ashley, Sandi and the other workers &volunteers are all so knowledgeable! Love how you can interact with the birds and see them in a natural habitat.

    Justin F.

This place was simply awesome! Expensive, but I think actually worth the price, especially when I learned that they have vets on site 24/7 to care for the birds. We also did the bird show, which was worth the price as well, I'd say. Had an owl fly so close to my head I could feel the wind from its wings in my ear! Cafe food and coffee were decent too! We spent a good 5 hours or so, and if we lived nearby we would certainly be back!

My girlfriend is bird lover, and she had a great time at the National Aviary. There are tons of different areas in the aviary, and lots of feedings scheduled throughout the day to give you the chance to learn about the birds from the knowledgeable staff. Plenty of chances to get up close and personal with the birds - and the lorikeet feeding was well worth the small add-on charge to have birds landing on you for your cup of nectar. If you like birds, definitely worth stopping in!

I didn't think many animals would be out but this is the only day I had available to visit so I had to go. First of all, because of the cold and snow, there were very few people which was amazing to be honest. It felt like I had the whole zoo to myself and surprisingly, I had good luck with the animals. A lot of animals were inside or the habit was shut down but I still pretty much saw what I wanted to. The enclosures were clean and spacious. I loved that I could go into the Elephant Barn and see them feeding them, etc. The entrance is currently under construction but there were several employees posted along the way directing guests. Also, parking is free which is a plus! The zoo is big but not TOO big. I was there for about 3-4 hours, although I did spend more time in certain areas to look at certain animals. The aquarium was quite small but still a good experience. My only downside for me was the gift shop. The main gift shop didn't have much in it to my liking which is unfortunate. I still would recommend this zoo and would love to come back to check it out some more!

The one rabbit didn't even really have any food. Rabbits are prone to digestion issues and need to be able to be constantly eating. Because of this, they were visibly super stressed out because they were kept front and center of the store and didn't have any place to hide and get away from the stressors. The top of their cage was also just open and I saw little kids reaching their hands in without any employees around to facilitate customers interacting with the animals like that. Honestly terrible for everyone involved because A.) The kids could get bit B.) It stresses out the animals C.) The animals are learning to be afraid of people are going to be difficult to socialize with anyone that takes them home and D.) Any germs on the kids' hands could easily be transmitted to the animals and make them sick. This store should just stick with fish honestly. I'm not as knowledgeable about the other kinds of animals they have as I am about guinea pigs and rabbits, but the owners definitely either don't care about the animals or are just really uneducated about the animals they're selling.

There are rooms dedicated to wildlife dioramas from eons past, including the fabled La Brea Tar Pits (Photo 9), as well as more current ones representing North America, the polar caps, and the African savanna. We fed the goats, who were the sweetest, tamest goats I have ever met. (Frankly, they completely changed my opinion about goats, with which I have had some unpleasant memories in the past.) You can pay a quarter for some food and feed it to them by hand, and not a single one took it from me anything less than gently. There is also a super cute feature where you can send some food up to goats standing at the top of the pen via a pulley system. There were several baby goats here when we visited and they were ridiculously adorable. It was late in the day and they were out of several of the food offerings; I was told by my friend that the hot pretzel is fantastic, but didn't get to find out. I came home with a pint of raspberries, a big bunch of strawberries (last of the season!), jars of pickled beets and bread and butter pickles, and a block of baby Swiss cheese. Most have grown up coming here, some have worked here, even fell in love here, but all have fond memories of the amusement park of Pittsburgh's past and present. Kennywood is located on the border of Duquesne and West Mifflin, sitting above the Monogahela River. If you are traveling from out of town, there are highway signs and also wooden, yellow Kennywood Arrows that direct you in the direction of the park from different areas of the city. Parking (both paid and free options) is located across the street, but there is a underground tunnel just beyond the entrance gates that takes you "across the road" and into the park. I have been to Kennywood more times than I can count, but my most recent visit was on a Saturday evening this past July. We arrived before 5:00 PM, and had no issue finding a parking spot in the free upper lot. There was parking available in the lower lot as well, but that section is paid. The upper lot has an escalator to bring guests down the hill, and from there it is maybe a 2-minute walk to the gates. At the time we entered, there was no line at the gates. I find that there rarely is any line, but even if there is it usually is only a couple minute wait. Security and ticketing has never been a problem here, and the process is always smooth and quick. The park was lively, but not so crowded that we were unable to ride. Lines were minimal for the most part, and even with a late arrival, we rode nearly 10 attractions before the park closed at 10. This included Phantom's Revenge, The Racer, Jackrabbit, Thunderbolt, and more. This included some time wasted waiting 40+ minutes for the Exterminator, only for it to break down while we waited! Right after we arrived, we decided to grab food. Even though it was prime dinner time, we had no trouble finding a table nearby. First, I purchased a souvenir cup at the Lucky stand. It was $34.99 pre-tax, but included free refills the entire season. If you bought several cups, the price per cup went down. However, I think this was an awesome deal, especially if you plan on visiting several times throughout the summer. Plus, there are several self-service fountain drink dispensers around the park that limit wait times for refills. Next was the Potato Patch. The line was short, and service was friendly and quick. I chose the classic combo of Bacon Cheese Fries. Fries here will run between $10 to $13, but are a must for any day at Kennywood. They are a good size to share with a few people, or to serve as a meal for yourself! Near the end of the night, there was a special Drone Show happening near the Jack Rabbit/Lagoon area. The show only ran for a few weekends in July. It was a neat show that went through the history of the park. Our whole group enjoyed it! My critiques of the visit are as follows: First, I wish there was still a Night Rider ticket. When I was young, they sold a cheaper admission price for those entering the park after 5 PM or so, since you miss a significant part of the day. I truly believe this should be brought back. Second, the hours of the park keep getting shorter. When I was a child, the park would be open until midnight during peak summer days, and even sometimes they would extend the hours on the spot if enough people were in the park. Now, you are lucky to see a 10 PM close. There is so much magic in the park at night, and closing when it is still light out should be illegal!!! Third, there were lots of attractions and stands not open. We visited on a prime Saturday night in July. The weather was perfect, and there were many games/food stands/rides not open or in operation. I know staffing is an issue everywhere nowadays, but it is disappointing to pay for admission and finding that prime rides, such as The Steel Curtain or Exterminator, are closed. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Kennywood this past year! It is fun to keep coming back and reliving memories that I have from my childhood, but also seeing how the park continues to evolve and appeal to the present day consumer. I just hope they realize the desire for historic preservation by locals, and never veer too far away from that.

We have been season pass holders for several years now. If you are going to go to the park twice in…read morea year, it is worth it to purchase a pass. Along with the pass you have VIP parking and a cup that you can use on fountain drinks. There are a good variety of rides for all ages. Kiddie land is focused in one area of the park. Our favorite area of the park is Lost Kennywood. Food is pricey throughout the park but that is really expected anymore. One thing to note is Kennywood is cashless. We go to the park during all seasons throughout the year. You are able to bring in food, drinks and bags during the summer and winter. During fall fest they are very strict. You cannot bring anything in and your bag is limited to a small fanny pack. We found the best days to go in the summer is when it just rained. Definitely smaller crowds. Im sure we will be back as pass holders next year.
