Went to some art in the park thing here. It was pretty cool. There was all kinds of artistic items you could buy from paintings, to jewelry to household items that were handmade. A lot of creativity in one place. And these people aren't just from Pittsburgh but from surrounding states and cities as well. It was cool to see a variety of artistic talent all in one beautiful park. There were food vendors here too! I should have got some macaroni and cheese or Italian ice! Damn! :) read more

Mellon Park is perfectly situated on Fifth Avenue because when I lived in Regent Square, we would often walk over for picnics and events being held here. When I moved to Bloomfield, we were still able to make the walk and enjoy the urban landscope in the center of two busy city neighborhoods (Shadyside & Point Breeze). There are different entrances and the park actually has space on either side of Fifth Avenue. Lots of lush greenery and gardens to walk and enjoy. Certain parts have Victorian-era England vibes. read more

This is the perfect place for a picnic and they have some really good climbing trees. I don't know if you're supposed to climb the trees but my kids did and they had a great time. We also rolled down some hills. It's just a nice place to be in nature in town. read more

When I think about it, I have a lot of memories of this park. Family photos were taken here (my brother wore his awesome Mickey Mouse belt). I did my first good spin on a toboggan. Boys' Club baseball and tackle football. And my mother's wedding reception. A small green space, wee in comparison to Schenley or Frick, but it's great green space, complete with baseball and basketball fields, hills and gardens and jungle gyms. Originally the estate of Richard Mellon, the mansion was torn down and the grounds were turned into public space. Today it is home to the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Phipps Garden Center. Local garden club volunteers are responsible for much of the maintenance. But I want to highlight a new feature of this very old park, a memorial garden installation in the lawn of the Walled Garden called "7:11 am 11.20.1979 79º55'w 40º27'n". This artwork by Janet Zweig refers to the time and date of birth of Ann Katharine Seamans, whose parents sponsored its commission. If you come at dusk, you will see the ground illuminated by 150 stars and planets as reflected from the night sky. In the day, 150 stone markers are hidden in the grass, each bearing a star's name. It's very cool, and needs & deserves some hype. read more

I visited the park for the first time for "Bach, Beethoven and Brunch" This free concert features a wide variety of classical and instrumental groups every Sunday from 10:30 until noon. The Allegheny Brass was enjoyable to hear in this well maintained park with plenty of spots to grab a spot in the shade. The park has some stunning overlooks and rolling hills. I look forward to coming back to this beautiful park for a leisurely stroll around the grounds. read more

I finally got to go to the spray park!!! I live less than a mile from Mellon Park but am typically attracted to Frick instead. But Mellon Park has the spray park, and I wanted to go. My friend and I made it in on opening day. The spray park is mostly in the shade, and the water is pretty cold. However, we had fun. We stood in the misters for a long time and played in the fountains a bit. A few younger kids even let us play under the dumping buckets with them. All in all, it was a great and free way to cool off on a 90 degree day. Otherwise, this park has a baseball field, tennis courts, grassy areas, a small playground, and a pavilion. From a park perspective, it is much smaller than Frick park. For the same reason, it is also much quieter. Don't forget about the Bach, Beethoven, and Brunch series if you reside in Pittsburgh in the summers. read more

I love coming here for Bach Beethoven and Brunch. Try to get there early 9am if you want to be in the front near the orchestra or meander around the back and find a shady spot under a huge tree with your picnic. Always bring a big soft blanket so you can lay down. I adore soaking in the music while the sun rays poke through the swaying leaves displaying a kaleidoscope of light on my face. Sipping OJ in stryofoam cups and nibbling on strawberry and kiwi fruit salad makes the morning sublime. One time I even made breakfast burritos. I have to insist that the burritos were super delicious but messy to eat in the park. Mellon Park also hosts " A Fair in the Park " you will find music, fine arts, food, and fun! You can buy some great plants at the Phipps garden center adjacent to this Sunday event. The brain looking plants are my favorite! See you this summer! read more

I am thankful for every little bit of green space. That we have in the city. On a Saturday I went to A Fair the Park which was held in Mellon Park. A Fair in the Park is a an annual arts festival put on by the Craftmen's Guild. There were easily 60 different artists there. I purchased a beautiful handmade mosaic framed mirror. This was my first visit to Mellon Park. Upon arrival I was little confused as to how gain access to the park, but I asked a friendly dog walker and made my way through a side gate. Although I am not a dog owner, the park seemed to be very pet friendly. The park is a slice of heaven , it's very roomy and has both upper and lower levels. Also at this location there is a rather lovely walled garden. My first trip to Mellon park and I really enjoyed the space. read more

This is an ok park. Very very hilly so be prepared to do some climbing. It's very green, and has a pretty area with fountains and sculptures. Some advice: better not drink from the water fountain at this (and probably other public parks) because I saw a family let their dog drink directly from the faucet. It was repulsive. read more

This is by no means the nicest of city parks, but I do make a special effort to drive through or stop and sit often. To me this park has only one meaning, it is one of the places my kids frequently played softball. For that reason alone it is a special place. Softball/baseball fields are refuges, sanctuaries, especially in urban areas. No better way to lose the worries of the world than watching kids play softball. read more

So I went to Mellon Park for a late night outing with an ex-man friend and my Moo Moo Pie (aka Molly aka the dog). Its definitely a beautiful spot late at night when no ones around. The lights on the lawn in front of the fountain are lit. Theres plenty of room for Molly to run around for a good 2 hours. Id say if you're in Shadyside and looking for some romantical date ideas a late night picnic here is a must. read more

This is the perfect park for kids, little and big. My sister and I took my nephew over the weekend. He is about two years old, and of course wanted to play on the "big kid" playground. There are a variety of playground options, as well as a large swingset and plenty of space to run around. read more

This is a nice little park that sits about 3 or 4 blocks away from my apartment. Sometimes I make sure this spot is along my running route, which is nice during the day. At night, however, there has been more than a single instance of an uneasy experience; thus, I'd recommend to stop by before dark. I've played tennis on the bubble tennis courts before, which are nice albeit overpriced compared to other indoor facilities in the area. read more

How awesome to have this park just steps from our apartment. It's our go-to green space for a short walk or to read a book. It has some nice walking paths and some really beautiful trees scattered throughout it, with some funky art spaces. I'm a big fan! read more
