City parks in general, but Frick, Schenley, and Riverview in particular are amazing recreational assets that are unequalled in other metro areas. I was fortunate and privileged to grow up with Frick as my backyard and walked all over the place before graduating to riding mountain bikes on the trails when the sport was in its infancy. Later, I ran high school cross-country races in Schenley and trained in Frick Park. Nowadays, we enjoy the flowers, wildlife, and groomed and maintained trails. I never appreciated how unique, rare, and amazing the parks are until I moved away and it's so great to see them treated as the unique assets they truly are. read more

Frick Park is a dense network of interconnected trails that helps define Pittsburgh as a city of parks. I keep coming back and exploring different paths, only to realize there's always more to discover. It's one of those places where you can return again and again and still find something new, which makes it feel really special to me. The way the trails connect is one of my favorite things. Nine Mile Run flows into Deer Creek, which then connects into Tranquil Trail, creating an easy, continuous experience through the park. And thats just one corner of the park. While bathrooms are not abundant, you will occasionally find a porta potty, and there is often trash cans and benches toward the entrances and parking lots of the trail as well. Overall it's just a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon, and I really hope spaces like this continue to be preserved as an important part of Pittsburgh's identity and history. read more

Frick Park is Pittsburgh's own Grand Canyon -- you take one step down into a ravine and you're transported away from the city and plunged into an entirely different world. Sure, the blue slide is legendary, but it's the well-managed forest and extensive network of trails on its 100-plus acres that are the star here. When I was young and spry, I covered every inch. But the impetus for me writing a review is a recent visit to the new Sensory Nature Trail, a fully-accessible 1/3-mile trail that was built behind the now 9 year-old(!) environmental center. This new feature offers clear benefits for my vision-impaired mother, who is not so able to navigate the deeper trails. It says so much about the Parks Conservancy that they would put forth this kind of effort to benefit the more vulnerable in our society. And it's worth pointing out that everyone can benefit from such a trail. I loved the new infrastructure myself. Pro tip: check out the pebble harp, if nothing else. read more

Great local park that is very well maintained! Came here to walk a few trails with my dog. Loved that there's a wide variety of trails, from paved roads to gravel rocks to narrow dirt paths. The Riverfront trail was great for an easy loop. The trail is wide enough to pass comfortably other walkers and dogs, shaded by large trees, and passes the off leash park area. Didn't see any trash or large debris on the walk either! There were even small benches along the way to sit and rest, along with a water fountain to hydrate on a hot day. My dog loved it, very relaxing and peaceful with great scenery. Definitely will be returning! read more

They now have a newly built outdoor discovery space and sensory nature trail. I like the kaleidoscope and the pebble harp. The kaleidoscopes are set on some flowers that you can view and turn the scope. The pebble harp is two large wooden boxes with metal tines in them that produce really cool sounds when you put pebbles into the holes at the top. There are tons of pebbles that you can use to play the instrument. I love these type of creative interactive sound installations. I hope that it will last for years to come. Great park with lots of nice trails and plenty of shade trees. Beautiful anytime of year but especially so in the fall when the leaves are changing. Usually lots of dog walkers and families when I come which is nice to see. Pretty nice open spaces for picnics, yard games and frisbee too if that is more your speed. Some trails are closed due the the bridge construction, but there is still plenty to do on the ones that's remain open. read more

Frick Park is beautiful and I feel lucky to have such an incredible park in our backyard. I particularly love the Falls Ravine trail because it's a good three miles and there's a bit of elevation. I was blown away with how big Frick Park is and just how gorgeous it was. Four stars because it's next to impossible to find trail maps online or know where to park / where to go once you're there. It is fun to get lost, but that isn't the experience everyone wants. Also, dogs are allowed off-leash which is really unsafe. Thankfully the park isn't big enough to get truly lost, and I recommend to have your phone on you so you can look at Google maps to see where you are. I hope in a few years time Frick starts providing more clear maps and trail information to visitors. read more

Frick Park is the largest park in Pittsburgh, covering 644 acres in total. Because it's so large and well-maintained, this is one of those green spaces that has a little bit of everything. Hiking trails? Check. Bike-friendly trails? Check. Places to play sports games like soccer? Check. The woods and waterways are also so well established and cared for that they support a wide range of wildlife. Deer are of course extremely common, but if you time your visit just right you can also spot bats at twilight. I've also seen snakes sunning themselves on rocks by the creeks, and have heard multiple species of owls at night. "Heard wildlife in the park at night," you say? Yup, my favorite time to explore Frick Park is actually at night, which is possible thanks to 3 Rivers Outdoor Co. I can't recommend checking out their programming enough - the full moon hikes in particular are a blast! The only bummer is that Frick Park is admittedly a bit out of my way since I'm a South Hills girl, so I don't visit as often as I'd like. But it's always a blast when I do. I definitely recommend making the time to check it out if you haven't yet! read more

A majestic stretch of forest adjoining what appeared to be one of the higher-end areas of Pittsburgh, this park offers both highly manicured event space and hilly, wild forest. They had an environmental center and I couldn't discern that it had a ton to offer a passerby other than basic facilities, but it looked nice and it had a bunch of educational space, including separate tiny doors for the kids to enter and exit through. An observation deck doesn't come close to exceeding the height of the canopy but does provide an interesting view. It was no trouble finding free parking, and there's no reason not to come. read more

Frick Park is a great escape from city-living. We went on one of those randomly warm February days in Pittsburgh & took our pup with us. We entered on the Squirrel Hill side (vs Regent Square & Point Breeze access points) and street parking was easy to find. I know the park is way more beautiful in the spring/summer but we had to take advantage of the nice day! The trail we took was visibly marked and I'm so glad because I really wasn't paying attention lol. This park is huge though! I think over 100 acres?! Such a treasure in the middle of an urban area. So jealous we don't have something this large and accessible in Indianapolis. We came here to escape the city for a bit and go for a nice walk in the park, followed by a quick hang sesh on the lawn out front by the road. The trails are a touch confusing, but AllTrails was our friend and made our hike an easy trek. Nice hills, great tree coverage, and lots of care in the maintenance of the trails. Good for mountain bikers, walkers, runners, and kids. read more

Frick Park is really clean and beautiful! I have gone to Frick Park for many years at the end with the blue slide. I also am a little bit familiar with the entrance from Regent Square. My boyfriend and I went for a hike for the first time at the entrance near the Frick art museum. I haven't been over that way for probably five years! So crazy! We parked on the street for free (near the dead end at Ben Hur street). We saw a group of older men playing lawn bowling. I had never seen this before! We started on the Hawthorne Trail and covered Homewood Trail and Tranquil Trail. One of those is closed because of the bridge collapse. We were nervous that we would get lost somewhere deep in the woods, but these 3 trails all connect and are easy. We checked out the map and plan to go back for longer next time. There are people jogging, walking, and riding bikes. I thought I saw a sign that said no pets, but there were definitely people walking their dogs. The woods were peaceful and quiet. I liked that there were benches along the way too. We are excited to be more adventurous next time. read more

Frick Park is beautiful and has easy hiking trails for different distances. They also have an O.L.E.A. ( off leash exercise area) a.k.a. Dog Park. Playground for kids to enjoy, plenty of scattered benches for a rest, reading, or both. Tons of open space to have a picnic or just lay in the grass. Went here over the weekend and took the pups with me. Loved the trails and scenery. The best part was that, even though it was a hot day, the trees created a gentle breeze and a nice shade. We walked a few trails and one of them led to an open area (Ferns hollow, by the falls ravine shelter) that had some shade and allowed you to sit and picnic, if you wanted. The trails had some steep inclines so make sure you wear good shoes and keep your eyes open. Biking is also possible, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is just beginning as the trail quickly shifts and some areas are very narrow. The place had some bathrooms but they were both out of toilet paper. It's a park, so it having a bathroom to begin with is a nice touch. There was also a visitor center but I did not enter it, so not sure what it looked like on the inside. read more

Love this park. I'm a regular, usually going 3 or more times a week so maybe I'm ever so slightly biased when I say this park rocks! There are several herds of deer that I have learned to quietly follow over time to the point where they don't run from me. The bird watching is great. Lots of events for kids. There are only two issues: 1. they are cutting down many trees by the environmental center. Like nearly half an entire hillside. 2. There are a lot of hills and very few trails for people who cannot tackle them. But the beauty outweighs the bad and they lovely park people are doing great things. Fantastic park for some solid, low-level hiking! While you won't reach great heights during your time roaming the trails, you can certainly find your way to some challenging changes in elevation and steep-ish climbs. Mountain biking is quite the excursion here, so be prepared to stay alert and move out of the way of oncoming bikes. The scenery is beautiful and helps you to forget that it took less than a 20 minute drive to arrive. read more

I will start with a brief history note on Henry Frick because I am a nerd like that. Frick was Carnegie's right hand man in some instances he ran the mills and abused the workers. While Carnegie was canoodling around the world making sure everyone knew how fantastic he was. Soooo fast forward Frick has a daughter he asks what she wants for her birthday as young lady; she says she wants a park for the people of Pittsburgh and Frick park is born. I cannot express my love for Frick without telling you how I lost my broken heart there in 2011. I know you're thinking what! Who is is this nutjob trying to over-share to strangers on yelp.. get to the park.... I will but I want you to understand that if you love the outdoors at all Frick Park is the magical kind of place that can make your worries melt away. If you give it a chance. It has open meadows rolling walkways steep trails, flat trails, a two large fenced in dog play areas for your fur children to romp in. Creeks, Streams marshes, small soccer fields, a nature center and multiple fairly easy to access entrances. In a nutshell you are going to need some time to explore this place! If you live 10+ miles away I would suggest setting aside at least 2-4 hours to enjoy it fully on your first visit. I am adding the link to Frick parks website because it will help you understand the references to names of trails and places and it was helpful for me when I found Frick huge and daunting on my first visits. It has a map of trails with how long they are etc. Note make sure to click the pdf map on this link not the google map. The google map does show trails http://www.pittsburghparks.org/frick-directions ENTRANCES I love and best if you have kiddos (playgrounds galore) are the Nicholsen street entrance in squirrel hill and regent square entrance on Braddock in regent square. Parking is on street and hard to find if its sunny out get there early. Nicholsen street offers access to the largest paved walkway if you are into walking only and hiking this is a good starting point. Regent square entrance it is harder to drop down into the park, I say drop down in because Frick is steep at some entrances with trails doing down to a few main flat ones in the middle. Keep this in mind when you are fatigued and want to get out :) Nicholsen st also offers entrance to the two off least dog areas, I have had good experiences here but watch your pooch in the back park area. Sometimes there were holes in the fence they could escape through though that has been mostly repairs last year. The Nature reserve entrance is now closed! Under construction as they are building a new environmental center this is off of beechwood. My favorites TRAILS: I am dividing for runners and bikers hikers could fall under best for running category as well. I'm not a cyclist, I run but I have a buddy who is and told me points he likes to ride at. Great RUNNING trails: north clayton and south clayton can run to nature reserve and drop back down into the park at Falls Ravine (if you have a dog with you) or Nature Trails if you are dogless and they will lead you to tranquil trail which is a great flat trail to catch your breath on. I like also fireline trail, t and nine mile run trail. If you were looking to get back to Nicholsen you can head up lower riverview to Riverview trail. It will go past the dog parks and back to main entrance. For BIKING---- new bike trails but they are marked now. You'll have to find them for yourself I am kind of sick of dodging mountain bikers this week. Runners and hikers I'd advise going early am or later at dusk to avoid excess bike traffic. Frick is really kind of small for all these bike trails :( Most SCENIC in the FALL are Falls Ravine, Tranquil Trail, and Lower Riverview, just breathtaking if you love fall colors. Best CARDIO Braddock Trail and Riverview, not a Jane Fonda Workout video! It burns in a good way run it I dare you! What a pretty park! There are a lot of different trails, but they all kind of overlap over each other. This can lead you to going on new trails, which is nice, but if you're looking for a more organized trail system this park isn't the best for that. Oh yeah tornado weather! I love it when the warm wind is blowing with just the right hint of humidity in the air to keep you cozy. You watch the clouds darkening waiting for the torrential downpour that is inevitably on it's way. It mimics life sometimes. Yes I was waiting for the storm to come and it surely did but now the sun is out again. So go figure. We started on the tranquil trail but it started to sprinkle, by the time we made it up to the parking lot near the Braddock trail it had started to clear up and we decided to chance it walking towards the playgound then reached the road at Forbes ave. This is right by the bridge so we decided to go back down the cliff to the walking path. Since it was relatively dry we had a strong foothold but there is a bum that lives under that bridge I think. There are lots of recycling bags and trash hanging on the ledge. There is also a lot of glass so it would have been better to go back around but we stayed far from the glass. Once we got back to the bottom we ran into the "Hot Dog Dam" it's a fenced in area where the pooches can swim and play! We hopped the stream and went out back to tranquil trail where we hooked up with Homewood trail. After the trek we rested near a little pond and wetland spot where lovers come to carve initials into the tree. Geez how depressing! Oh well, I grabbed a log spread my arms to breath and meditate on the glories of the possible! Spring is here to show you that rebirth is happening NOW, take the opportunity in your hands to grow! The rain finally came but after that hike I welcomed the cleansing bouquet of earthy shower. Hurrying back to the car I noticed this thug looking kid slinking around. He gave me a bad feeling, and I wished that I had brought my tazer. People are sparse on a day like today so in the future when I'm going it alone I will bring this essential. No matter, it was an idealistic morning jaunt with the added bonus of nature's purification. read more

Doesn't matter how many times I visit this place, it's never the same. Frick park is an amazing park and probably the best in the city to visit with how far it stretches. Most of my visits consist of me taking the little man to the Off the Leash area. Two great areas for a dog to interact with other dogs. If you feel one area is too crowded for your four-legged friend, try the next area. The trails are quite extensive too. I've walked through several different areas throughout the part and I for one know I have not seen all of the park yet. I use to live in an apartment building in Squirrel Hill right off of one of the trails for Frick Park and found it convenient to be able to access just about anywhere in the park from my back door. I'm sure I could live in this city my whole life and probably not be able to cover all there is to do in this park. Each neighborhood that connects to this park seems to have something you can with the park. Squirrel Hill has got the baseball fields and playground at the entrance on Beechwood. Regent Square has got their own ball fields and playground as well as tennis courts to use at their entrance. I'm sure there is more to do, I just haven't discovered it yet. read more

WOW it's a really nice park in the city with lots of activities for all ages. The baseball fields and soccer fields are all well kept so is the playground. Lots of hiking trails with education signs that tell you about all the nature in the park. It's also nice that across the street are restaurants. Who needs a gym when you live in Regent Square? What a beautiful park to have in the city. I just love our neighborhood and all it has to offer. Hot Dog Dam is a feature of the park that our dog appreciates. The trails/paths are a great workout and great connection with nature. read more

Frick Park offers an incredible escape from the city. Most of the park is in a gorge, so the terrain seemed overwhelming to me at first, but after exploring a little I discovered many beautiful well maintained trails that are perfect for running or hiking. I would recommend the Tranquil Trail for a short walk/run on almost flat terrain. Because of the topography there is very little car traffic through the park and you can't even see or hear cars/houses in many areas. It is so peaceful. There are also some great wildlife spotting opportunities - I tend to go on runs in the early evening and almost always spot a group of deer nibbling on grass. There are many dog walkers and I have encountered several dogs off leash, but never a situation where the dog was out of control, so no problems there. read more

BEST PLAYGROUND EVER! The slide was the highlight of the day. Pro tip: bring cardboard boxes to slide down on. Makes you go so much faster and reduces friction on the concrete. Oh, to be a kid again! I wish we'd explored the hiking trails more, because they looked lovely. read more

I went hiking at Frick Park for a few hours recently. I spent time walking along a few of its several trails. The woods were peaceful and quiet. Other people were biking or walking their dogs. The park also has a tennis court, playground, and environmental center. In the future, I will return to hike the remainder of the trails. read more
