I am not downtown everyday anymore, but any time I am I try to stop by Mellon Square Park. It's such a nice place to sit and relax and has a great view of all the really old architecture from nearby buildings. When it's not busy on the weekdays there can be some interesting characters, so I try to only sit down when there are other people around. I have been loving the Summer block parties that Talia puts on. They have live music, cocktails, and Italian food for a couple hours once or twice a month. It is really fun, especially when the weather is nice. There is a parking garage on Oliver underneath the park and the Omni William Penn is right across the street. This is a great place to take photos at too! I feel like a lot of local people don't even know about this serene little square in the middle of the city.

Downtown Pittsburgh has a limited shopping venue and people aren't coming downtown as once before. Our picnic was perfect and our dog enjoyed the wide open fields to prance around. The park has three swing sets, two playgrounds, a huge net contraption to climb on, and a massive skate park. This park makes Bellevue an even better community in Pittsburgh!

The park is about five acres and is home to many events from music festivals, skating parties and more. It's also next to the Bloomfield Bridge and a lot of events happen under the bridge as well. It's all on the same city property. There's a bocce court (of course!) and a skate area for dek hockey, skateboarding, roller skating, roller blading, etc. There are skate ramps under the bridge. The park has a baseball field and basketball courts along with a playground. Areas for picnics. The park brings together people of all ages for various events not just from the neighborhood but from others as well. It's a place that connects everyone whether through swimming, skating, ball playing, or rocking out to cool local bands. The park & pool are absolute gems. Makes us Bloomfielders proud to be yinzers!

Riverview Dog Park is in the beautiful Riverview Park. It is a great place to go and hang out and socialize. For you and your dog. Riverview has to separate areas that are both completely fenced in, One area is for all dogs the second is for dogs smaller than 25 pounds. All the other dog owners where very nice and Franklin ran around for 2 hours. Franklin loved it and I will probably take him again today. If you have a social dog then Riverview Dog Park is a great place for you and your dog to socialize.

I swear, half of my summer weekends over the decades have been spent at a cookout, grad party, or other gatherings with friends at one of those pavilions, eating hot dogs and hamburgers. When my daughter was little I brought her there through her teenage years with her friends. Always a good spot to spend a hot summer day in Pittsburgh.

I love me a good river and the Monongahela is a good river. From the native American word,…read moreMonongahela means "falling banks" in reference to the rather unstable banks of the river that used to collapse quite a bit. That doesn't seem to be a problem in Pittsburgh but you never know. Today, the river is long and slow and deep. That makes it good for shipping and I just happened to spot a barge bringing materials upriver from the Ohio and stopping here on the South Shore. The river flows almost entirely south to north, which is rather unique. Coming from the confluence of the West Fork River and the Tygart Valley River, it drains a good piece of the Appalachian mountains through its 130 miles that are entirely navigable thanks to a series of locks and dams. Pronouncing the name of the river is always a great opportunity to find the out-of-towners. But it's "mnaoŋihla". Enjoy it!

The Monongahela River is 127.8 miles long, it starts in Fairmont West Virginia and flows north to…read morePittsburgh. It's made up of the West Fork and Tygert River. The reason this river flows north is due to the fact the mountains south of here in West Virginia are much higher than Pittsburgh and forces the river to flow downhill, which in this case downhill is north. It was named by the native Americans and has been translated to mean "deep sliding banks" or "falling banks." The "Mon" has no islands it's entire length, which is almost as unique as flowing north. Just about every long river in North America has an Island. It's one of the rivers that feeds into the Ohio River. There are two major rivers that flow into the Mon, and that's the Cheat River and the Yough. For many years the Monongahela River was so polluted because of the steel mills that lined the river almost it's entire length, that this river would never freeze, even in the coldest of winters. Because of it's navigational importance mile 0.0 is actually located at the Point of Pittsburgh and mile 127.8 is Fairmont. At one time it was referred to as the "biggest little river in the world" due to the fact more cargo traveled up and down the Monongahela River than traveled through the Panama Canal. There are nine locks and dams on the Mon, the first being located near Kennywood Park, it's called Lock and Dam No. 2. The Last Lock and Dam is Opekiska, near Fairmont. Older Locks and Dams have numbers attached to them, newer ones have names.
