    Pasta and meatballs

We stopped in for our first time for lunch. We had very friendly service, excellent food (loved the meatballs), in a mom and pop environment! Great homemade food! It's small and intimate- and just what you would expect in downtown!

Stopped in here for dinner during a business trip based on the good reviews. The place had a very nice local italian cafe atmosphere to it... and the service was very attentive. For an appetizer on this cold night, I started with a tomato dill soup and a dinner salad. The soup was pretty decent and hearty with some macaroni noodles inside. For my entree, I opted for the chicken parm as it came highly recommended (pictures uploaded) - it was a good portion, but it was covered in an tomato and olive sauce that overwhelmed the chicken in my opinion. I'm sure some people love this dish, but it wasn't my cup of tea. The chicken parm came with a small side of pasta with sauce that was okay. It seemed to be a great place though to a group to get together casually and dine on local italian cuisine. The menu was pretty diverse and I imagine that this would be a decent place to grab lunch. All in all it was a decent dinner with great service - however, if I were to return, I would probably order something else.

My wife, who's Italian, wants to take this +1 hour trip several times a year just to come here because it reminds her of the various "Mom & Pop" restaurants of her hometown in northeast PA. It sits in downtown DuBois with plenty of parking options nearby. The restaurant is good sized but it also does a lot of business so plan ahead on the weekends. The inside has a cozy/hometown feel with pictures of their family all over the walls. I don't think much has changed to the interior in those 20 years and that's okay by me. For this outing we opted for the antipasta salad, Italian wedding soup, veal parm and stuffed manicotti. Their dishes are more traditional italian (i.e. not olive garden) and they offer lunch, half, or full-sized portions. Their gravy has a good balance between sweet and savory. They also make a great fresh baked loaf of bread and they're happy to bring several to the table throughout the course. It was a special occasion so we closed out the night with their famous strawberry cheesecake. Service was excellent and the bill, with several drinks, was around $60 for 2. This is not a chain; it has character, it's not polished but it's a true gem of spot in rural PA. I'm glad places like this still exist!

Unfortunately, I found my main underwhelming--the gnocchi texture was oddly try, and the signature sauce was too sweet for my liking. But enough was promising that I'd return if passing through, I'd just order differently.

Normally you order online and then set a pickup time at his house on the weekend. I was fortunate to run into Mami's bakes at the Carnegie Farmer's market where he had a booth set up. I liked being able to see his collection of sweets in person. For the holidays he has created different "baked pies" that contain apples, pumpkin, pears, and tofu. All items are made without preservatives meaning you must consume them within 1-2 days or otherwise freeze them I had previously had his vegan brownie which was outstanding so this visit I purchased a chocolate chip pumpkin bread, a Cuban coffee cake, and two fried pies. Since my son is vegan I normally buy for him so he can enjoy these treats however, I got the pumpkin bread for myself. The pumpkin bread was sealed with a food sealer so when I got it home I dove into it. You can taste the chocolate chips in it and the bread is so soft and so moist that you would hardly know it was vegan. My son previously had one of Noel's buckeye brownies and a Chai cupcake. He thoroughly enjoyed them. In a city where there is little vegan places Mami's bakes certainly fills the bill here. Noel has been to Vegfest to promote his baked goods. I've been thoroughly pleased with my purchases up to now and am looking forward to seeing his Christmas offerings. Mami's bakes has an online ordering sit where you can place your food orders. The business home is located in Carnegie. Noel does take the time to answer any questions and provide you with guidance as to storage and reheating his baked goods.

Last night we ordered a pepperoni pizza. We were quoted a 15 minute wait and by the time we completed the 8 minute drive to get there, it was ready for us! The inside is cute, though I'm not sure we'll ever sit down here. It's clean and charming and just the right amount of kitschy. Got the pizza home, tried it, and it's good! For me, the standout is the sauce. It tastes fresh and not over-processed. The crust, for me, could do with some work. It's a bit of a floppy slice and if their oven could get a little hotter I think they'd nail it. It has just the right amount of chew. The cheese is okay. I'd like it if it had a bit more flavor, you can tell there's room to improve the quality of the cheese. Same for the pepperoni. Definitely not a standout or anything, but I don't expect wonders in pepperonis anyway. We placed an order over the phone in less than a minute, the pizza was made quickly, and it was a solid slice. Not much at all to complain about. It isn't the BEST slice of my life, but it is definitely a great place to start here in Butler. I'll keep you posted!
