Five stars for taste! Ordered takeout... the food tasted good, so no problems there! I am writing about one particular Mixed Grill Combo for which I was charged $60. The mixed grill was supposed to include 5 kebabs, grilled vegetables, rice... What I received was in no way a $60 dish!!! Everything came packed in one small container and a small salad on the side. I've been to Nargis multiple Times. I think there are both positive and negative things about Nargis. First off the service is always on point and they always have top-notch professional service. Just FYI they have a cake fee(when you bring a cake) and corkage fee that is CLEARLY LISTED on the menu. In regards to the food it seems to be lacking flavor...I don't really love their hummus and have had better. I also had the avocado salad which I think would have been good but it seems as if the flavor of onion and radish had taken over the taste of the avocado salad. I am not a big fan of the bread they bring out, they also charge you for bread(it's only a little more than a dollar who cares? But I don't get why they do that) even though you order hummus. I also had their potato and mushroom with onions I think it is good but it is exactly as it says , It is potato onions and mushrooms. The portions are pretty large and I believe can be shared between 2-3 people. I just think the flavor of the food are not the best I've ever had. I came here around 3 times because my friend loves this place I am just not a fan. I've never had to pick chicken or lamb skewers as I don't eat meat, but they are around five dollars a skewer. What great Uzbek food. I've been to many Uzbek restaurant in Queens and this restaurant rates as well as if not better especially the Lagman soup. We started off with the Spring salad which had feta cheese mixed garden vegetables, herbs and topped with feta cheese It was delicious. The lagman soup was the best lagman soup I've ever had. It had diced meat, vegetables and homemade noodles. The spices in it made it very tasty. We order the samsas with chopped meat and onion in a crispy pastry. For our main dishes we ordered Uzbek Plov, chicken shish kebab, and manti with meat. All was very tasty. The restaurant was decorated nicely and the servers were very attentive. read more

It was a changed of plan place to go as original restaurant were closing. Very comfortble seating and beautiful decro. Reservation not needed and immediately got seated. Our waitress was very helpful and friendly. Here our dinner Pickled herring/ garlic potatoes- herring was good but salty. It's one of those dish that u have to try if u will or not. My first try and like it but my husband did not. Garlic potatoes were so flavorful. Loved it. Non taki- a thin crunch bread. Like a cracker. Good with soup. First try. Shurpa- so good and big portion with big pieces of lamb meat. Broth was very flavorful. Lagman- very good. Big portion. Thick noodles and broth was flavorful. Our chicken, salmon, and chicken lelya kebabs were all so flavorful juicy and tender. Green plov- was ok and not greasy. Its chicken gizzards. It was introduced by our waitress and we decided to try. We originally wanted the Regular plov but they run out if it. But I don't think we will reorder again. Delicious salads and bread, especially the carrot salad. It looks like the plainest carrots ever but it's bold and tasty. My favorite thing on the menu. I've been coming here for a decade, back when it was at its former location. I do admit I miss that location; it had a better ambiance and was always packed--which was a good thing! It meant that the food was probably more fresh due to a lot of turnover and the energy in the restaurant was always bustling and lively. Since Nargis moved to the new location, the place has always been sparsely occupied. Why? Was it that the old location was better located on Ocean Ave? Or because the old restaurant had more cozy decor with weavings and tapestries from Uzbekistan while the new location feels like a generic Hilton hotel lobby? No idea. But I will say that the food remains the same, same taste, same recipes. I have not been disappointed in that regard. I love the cucumber dill tomato and onion salad with sour cream, the eggplant spread, the fried pumpkin mantis, and fries--of course most of all the carrot salad. Still my favorite place to eat after a long day at Brighton Beach swimming. The positive side is that I never have to wait for a table anymore since they relocated. read more

Still one of our favorite spots but the prices have gone up astronomically. One of the greatest things about this place was that the food is delicious and the prices reasonable. While most of the prices are still reasonable, $10 for a single beef skewer is ridiculous. The service is still wonderful. Yulia, our server today was exceptional while other staff members didn't look very happy to be there, but still were reactive and attentive. Make sure to check your bill. I've never seen a service fee added for a table of 2. However a 13% fee was already on the bill when we received it. Glad I looked! I was going to leave a 25% tip, but when I asked one of the staff, they told me it goes to the server the same as a tip, so I adjusted my tip accordingly. Really seems deceptive to not be informed ahead of time that a service fee is being added, and also unfair because we were only a table of 2 and should have the choice of what we would like to leave. Tips are optional, not mandatory. This alone makes me not want to return. We've eaten here often and spend a lot of money when we do. Today our bill was nearly $300 but I found all of this completely insulting. I miss the old Nargis. Shame on the management. read more

Yay, I'm a definite fan of Uzbek food! I've had multiple items on the menu, so I'm only going for the memorable dishes. The salad portions are very generous, great as appetizer. The menu is definitely meant more for eating family style unless you just get the kebabs. Kebabs: if you love liver, they make an excellent veal liver kebab that has pieces of grilled fat in between, so melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. Lamb, chicken, beef, and chicken wing kebabs are all seriously cooked and seasoned excellently. Chuchvara: small size meat dumplings w/ caramelized onions. My co-workers love these Must get: crispy manti (lamb dumplings). Love the crispy texture and filling. You get 4 pieces per order. If I could give 0 stars I would. Unfortunately Yelp doesn't allow that. Let's start off with how we were greeted (or lack thereof). This young girl was on her phone when we came in and she didn't say hi. Didn't say welcome. Didn't even ask how many people. Nothing. Next, sat at the table. We waited 10 minutes (I timed after we saw two other tables who got seated got waited on.) Food came. Food was okay. I will admit the skewers are good but does it make up for the horrible service? Absolutely not. No refill on water. No refill on anything. Once again waited a long time to get the check and when we got it, we noticed they automatically added a service fee. (So is this why you guys have horrible service? Because you're guaranteed a tip? That's not how it should work.) We also asked for our leftovers to be packed and the oxtail stew that we ordered was put in a plate container?! Like what happened to a quart or literally anything else.... This place caters to their own. Lots of European people. More like solely people of that demographic. It was just me, my sister and her friend along with a black couple a few tables away who were of color! It's a busy restaurant. It's tucked away in the middle of nowhere, too damn far away from the subway. It attracts the huge crowd because of the extensive menu and DIRT CHEAP PRICES. Well if you consider the area, it makes sense. Deep in Brooklyn away from civilization. I had the bowl of noodles which was pretty satisfying and hearty. The skewers of lamb which was tender and flavorful. We all ended the meal with cake which was remarkable. The only downside would be service. Being the restaurant is so huge and packed to the brim, it's hard to get a hold of the staff. I must have waited over 20 mins just for the bill. I nearly got up to hunt down staff myself. Each dish was traditional, full of flavor, and fresh. I enjoyed the salad and plov the most. I was born in Ukraine and have some friends that are from Uzbekistan and the area, so I've had the pleasure of enjoying homemade Uzbek food before. Nargis continues to pump out the same first rate, five star Soviet fusion cuisine I first sampled about 1 year ago - with huge portions -- at very reasonable prices (see my prior review). My main quibble this trip (and reason for keeping this update at 4 stars) is the indifferent and occasionally edgy service. Note to Owner: Since you tack on an automatic 10% service charge to the guest checks (I'm not a fan of this approach -- overly presumptuous and sneaky) -- your wait staff should take a greater interest in your customers. Talk up the food -- up sell the specials -- don't assume that everyone is Uzbek or Russian or eats here daily or doesn't understand how American gratuities work. Service was more accommodating last year when you rolled out. Despite a bit of Soviet-style brusqueness ... Nargis remains a terrific destination for authentic Russian and Central Asian comfort food and a few drinks. Worth a special trip -- our U.K. guests loved it! read more

I liked the old location and ordered both in the restaurant and pickup frequently. However, the new location is overwhelmed. They dramatically underestimate the amount of time that things will take to prepare, and they frequently make mistakes. People get upset, and no one is there to address problems. The manager is not even on site on a busy Friday to address the numerous problems as they arise. read more

Every so often, I go to a restaurant and I have the honor to put this line in my review: "Close your eyes, point to anything on the menu, and it's guaranteed to be good." Nargis, you're a gem. Seriously, the food it SO good. Make a reservation well in advance, this place fills up, and stays overflowing with hungry folks all night long. I came around 9pm with three friends and man oh man was it cramped. It's BYO-liquor/wine so stop at a store beforehand. We ordered...everything. All types of skewers, carrot salad, eggplant salad, other salads, breads, samsa, manty, potatoes, fish...the list goes on and on. The best part...it's so cheap! I suggest getting a pot of tea to help wash down all that meat, and pace yourself, your stomach will become an intense game of Tetris. The last time we were at Nargis Cafe was in 2021 when it was located in Brighton Beach. We planned to go to Brighton Beach with friends and found out that Nargis Cafe had moved to 2023. The new restaurant has a much more modern, designy look to it with small tables up front and bigger tables with modern comfy chairs and chandeliers in the back room. Before ordering, I showed a card with names and photos of different ingredients that I am allergic to. The staff informed me about any dishes that had even small amounts of those foods in it. So, would the food be as good as I remembered it was? No...it was better!! We had a wonderful meal of avocado salad with mesclun, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, scallions, dill, cilantro mixed with oil and vinegar dressing. Then, we had the juiciest and tastiest chicken kebobs I have ever eaten and Uzbek bread on the side. We also had pumpkin manti and tasted our friends meat monti--both were delicious!! We tasted some wonderful seasonings in the monti, but couldn't identify what they were. In addition to being helpful, the staff was also friendly and professional in demeanor. We have already recommended the new Nargis Cafe to friends and family and will definitely go back for anther wonderful meal! read more

We had heard about Nargis and our expectations were blown out of the water. We even got a tasty complimentary drink from the bartender. I remember the Nargis of old. It was friendly, it was delicious and it was relatively cheap. But that was then. The current Nargis has what I would call the "Sahara syndrome". Just like Sahara (the locals know what I'm talking about) they got too big for their own good and thought that they can do whatever they want without losing patronage. Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad. The food is still decent but it used to be better. The kebabs used to be better, the plov used to be better, the fresh salad used to be.....fresh (what a concept). The prices and service used to be better as well. I just think they got complacent. With so many Uzbek/Russian options in the area, why go to a place that doesn't really feel like they need your business or value you as a customer? A wonderful restaurant in the heart of Russian Brooklyn that I somehow never thought to try. Several people talked it up in the last few years, so on a recent weekend I guided the parents and the gf over for some Uzbek comfort food. Buzzing with families and friends at 2 pm on Sunday, they were still able to get us a table within minutes. The most remarkable thing about Nargis might be the five-star service. Stay with me now: if you're Russian or have been indoctrinated into Russian dining in New York, you know what I'm talking about. Sad but true: our former homeland is renowned for many things, but service is not one of them. It's a foreign concept to those who grew up in the former Soviet Union, and this is reflected in many a lame attempt to push the appearance of attentiveness (the plates are changed every 30 seconds, but you might get hit in the head with them...and you'll definitely increase your Russian sailor vocabulary at some joints). To paraphrase The Dictator, iz like seeing a monkey on roller-skates, sometimes. No so at Nargis. Our waiter was deft, funny, and completely accommodating, navigating my fastidious parents with expert aplomb. He was even patient in explaining the laughably reasonable $5 corkage fee for our BYOB (another concept that Russian New Yorkers of a certain age find foreign). I looked around the room, which was cozy even while at capacity. All the waiters and waitresses had headsets and an older manager patrolled the floor like a general, making sure his plan was executed to a tee. And it works! What can I say about the food? Middle Eastern cuisine is an easy sell for me, so everything I had, from the cheburek to the manti to the plov, were first rate (the latter was different from other plovs, but the lamb was perfectly tender and plentiful). The gf tried a lagman, which was a meal in itself, and enjoyed it. Parents had plov and a grilled fish, most of which they had to take home due to the sheer size of the serving. I absolutely adored this cafe! (Tons of vegan/vegetarian options even though the meals are mostly heavily meat oriented!) The portions of the food were huge, reasonably priced, and delicious!! You can order a ton of bits and pieces to share for the table which is a plus because you get to enjoy and try out multiple dishes. There's also outdoors seating for warm summer days which is a plus in my book! The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was the service - it was very slow and the servers and host weren't really attentive. Still on my top 5 when I'm in that part of town. Truth be told, they deserve 5* but the fact that they're not on Grubhub, UberEats or residing outside of their delivery zone, renders me frustrated. I believe they've gotten better, in all aspects of a proper dinner (except for the nightmarish, pseudo fantasy, lip syncing, bad trippy music videos that must be popular amongst the predominantly Eastern European clientele. Bright lighting is another atmospheric bummer. The weird af videos provide a modicum of low end amusement but we dismiss it as soon as the food arrives. Everything we've ever ordered, in our frequent patronage, has been stellar. Last two times, I opted for the sea bass kebab and now it's my fave. I'm so cray cray over any of their their house salads and would bathe in their 'salsa', so I always buy some to go. Salads, 'cheese cigars, kabobs, plov are all outstanding. Desserts have improved dramatically, as well. Service is excellent. We've never waited long if we request something, mid meal. This was my first time here and I am totally amazed! I like russian and uzbek cuisine a lot, the menu is not very big but everything was very tasty and prises are affordable. Manti with pumpkin is the only thing which tasted differently from what I got used to in my home country. Baklava is definitely must-try if you like this turkish sweet! Special thanks to our server. Nargis used to be the best and only game in town for great Uzbek food. But with other Uzbek places popping up all over sheepshead bay and Brighton Beach, Nargis has lost some of it's luster. Don't get me wrong the lamb kabobs are still amazing but they have doubled in price within the last year or two. Salads are fresh but portions have decreased and this is the only place in the area that doesn't give you free bread. These guys aren't exactly fine dining so I'm not sure why the prices are creeping up because service is not great. We ordered a bottle of wine and they didn't even deign to pour it in our glasses. Nor is the location scenic. This place is right on an ugly stretch of Coney Island Avenue. If you do go, get the aforementioned lamb kebabs, salads, fries and lamb pilaf.
