So I was an Arabic minor in college and naturally I'm into all things arabica now. My good friend Kyle F. went to Gaza one summer and came back with a nargileh pipe (sheesha if you're Egyptian, hookah if you're American I guess). She inhaled like a pro but I was too scared and wussed out and just pretended. After graduating from college I moved to Lebanon to teach English and that is where my habit of Lebanese cuisine, smoking nargileh, and lusting after Lebanese men began. I mean after freaking living in the mothership, I had no excuse to hold back. Now it's kind of in the middle of Arlington so it is a bit of a drive for people in Dallas and Fort Worth but I would highly recommend the trek. First of all it is cheap. Yeah. You can get a drink, an appetizer and an entree for like $15. Plus the pipes are cheap too. About $16 for a higher quality tobacco and about $10 for the more regular tobacco. They have interesting flavors and the smoke lasts a long time too. Totally anti-boughie, this place is friendly with staff that helps and don't try to gouge you with expensive bad tobacco and adding hidden fees like a certain downtown Dallas joint which should be avoided at all costs. The place is smallish but can fit about 150 people with both an outside patio and the main lounge. The decor is reminiscent of something Mediterranean but nothing gawdy. Since it's close to UT-Arlington, there are a lot of students there which is totally not my thing but I can deal. Many actual Middle Easterners go there too so that speaks highly of the food (which was fantastic thank you) and the pipes (clean unlike Kan Zaman in San Francisco). Service is prompt and the staff have no problems blowing out ash out of your pipe and changing your coals. And that Lebanese waiter guy Ihsan was muy freaking caliente. I'd go back just to stare but the food and the pipes will not disappoint. So if you love nargileh and Mediterranean cuisine without the attitude or feeling robbed, check this place out. Mediterranean cuisine is rare around here. Luckily, we have Narah Cafe. The food is great, especially their kabobs, which run around $12 to $16 and comes with rice, grilled vegetables, and either a salad or soup. My favorite is the lamb kabob, perfect in tenderness and flavor. An entree comes with two kabobs where each kabob is about 6 inches in length and 1.5 inches thick, so you're getting a good amount of meat. The default degree of cooking for their meats is medium-well, so tell them if you want something different. The rice is just right, not too wet and not too dry, and is flavored with some spices to give it a Mediterranean aroma. The first time I came here, the rice was really dry but it seems that that problem is now fixed. The vegetables, however, are dry and overcooked. I've only had their lemon lentil soup, which, in my opinion, is missing a little bit of kick. Solid, but not great. They also have sandwiches and burgers, which generally fall under the $6-7 range. They are good, but really, you're here for the kabobs. Some come with fries, which are similar to potato chips but thicker. With a relaxing Mediterranean decor and environment, Narah Cafe is a great place to enjoy a meal from the fertile soils of the Mediterranean. read more

Every time we pass by this place, the parking lot is packed. My husband and I had been talking about trying it out for months. Last night we finally decided to give it a try with a couple of our friends. We arrived about 7:45 and it was pretty empty, but we weren't surprised for a Monday night. The ambiance isn't fancy. And I think it could do without the self-serving Narah Cafe T-shirts on the walls. We decided to order the family style dinner for 4. We started with some dolmas (my favorite) and some hot tea. I also had a Turkish coffee that was delicious. The hot tea was bland. The dolmas were very tasty. The hummus was good and tabouleh was plentiful. We also got a plate of taziki and lots of pita bread and a pickle plate with raw onions and tomatoes. The kebabs (chicken, lamb, beef) were really delicious. The lamb kebabs were the best I've ever had (and I'm not a big lamb-eater). The beef kebabs were not exciting. Towards the end of our meal the place began to fill up with Middle Eastern folks coming to smoke hookahs, play cards, and drink Turkish coffee. If I hadn't been so stuffed, I would have tried a hookah. I have a feeling we will begin to frequent this place and try the other dishes on the menu as well as a hookah or two on the outdoor patio. read more

I frequent Narah Cafe on some Fridays like a happy hour bar -- it's BYOB and my B goes well with their excellent sheesha (10.95 to 23.95). Bottle opening service is $5.00. Their food selection is typical mid eastern and done very well. I enjoy their kabob (6.95) and hummos (small:$4.95/ large: 7.95), but their lamb shank (lunch: 8.95/ dinner: 12.95) is awesome. First impression is that this place is super dirty. Tables filled with dirty plates and empty cups, sticky tables (inside AND out), and burn holes in just about every cushion and pillow. Just imagine what the kitchen looks like..... We waited 25 minutes just for menus and another 20 for our food when all that was ordered were two gyro sandwiches. Not my recommendation for food or hookah. I would only go here if you have no other choice. The service was rude and inattentive and the food was poorly seasoned and came out cold. I've been here many times over the years and I can say everything has been consistently bad. As for my experience; I approached the front door soon realizing most of the customers where dining/smoking outside so I headed to the side of the building where the patio area was and turned the corner expecting to find a host stand, or somebody who would show me to a table but I found no one. After wandering the patio area for a short time unable to identify anyone who worked there I stumbled upon a group of people smoking and eating behind a brick bar area, way off to the side of the dining area. As I approached no one bothered to get up or greet me, instead looks of frustration where casted my way. I asked if they worked there and they rudely replied yes and to just sit wherever. Worst experience ever. Ordered the Labneh and they told me they didn't know what I was describing but I was reading the menu (fried chickpeas). This is not what it is, but a totally different meal. They told me that the menu was incorrect and they never changed it. Like what?!? Then it took us 30 minutes to get a mango drink, 20 minutes for our waiter to order the hummus, then we voided the hummus because we were beyond annoyed at this point, the waiter got upset. He didn't tell us we had to pay inside so after we asked for the check he continued serving other waiters. We had to stop him and ask for the check again and he said we paid inside. Narah is a good place to hang out with family and friends, we were on a 4 day visit to Dallas and we spent 3 evenings over here, because we loved the food, atmosphere and the service. Having said that, it could get really busy and crazy on the weekend nights that customer service goes down hill all the way to the bottom. But if you show up when it is not crowded you can expect the best that this place has to offer. The menu is long and packed with choices. We got carried away and tried all items on the menu by our third visit. The quality of food however is not necessarily reproducible and each day the same item may present or taste different, for instance the Kunafa desert served first day I had to spit out my bite! Third day my wife ordered it again, and it was to die for!! just perfect! same goes for hookah, despite me asking for the best of the best, where they would serve it with pineapple and ice in the water, and ice in the hose it was not even as good as the regular one I ordered.. The seats are very comfortable, big tables, and each table has a mosquito spray can to use so you would not be bit by mosquitos, something neat and unique and I liked it, but did not use it! A friend and I happened upon Narah after driving all the way out here and finding our normal place was closed for remodeling. Interesting decor... not at all what I would interpret a mediterranean restaurant to be but maybe they are decorating for the hookah part of the business. I just don't get the whole hookah thing but I'm probably too old to get it.. lol. What I did appreciate is that the inside of the cafe did not reek of smoke. We ordered the family style for two and were very pleased with most every offering that came with it. More than enough food and we each ended up taking a lot home. Babaganoush was not included in the combo so we ordered a separate small order... as this is the yardstick by which we measure mediterranean food. It was good but not as creamy and delicious as I've had elsewhere. The hummus which does come on the combo for two was very creamy but was basically tasteless to me. The chicken kebab was wonderfully tasty, beef kabob was tender and had that wonderful grilled flavor and the kafta kabob (my personal favourite) had the most wonderful spices mixed into it and then grilled.. yummy! Service was very, very good. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive. Food was delivered quickly in stages.. salads, pickle and dip plates, and then the kebab platter w/rice. My only complaints are that the music was a bit loud as we were trying to converse across the table and those chairs are absolutely the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in and tried to dine. Please, please, please replace these. We will be back as we would like to try some other things off the very expansive menu. read more

So I used to frequent this place a lot years ago and always enjoyed the hookah and ordered burger and fries. I drove across it one day and had to come in. Had the gyro and burger. Fries were still good and the burger was not as good as I remembered. The gyro was ok. Kind of bland. I ended up not finishing it and later could not finish the leftover either. And what ruined the experience was the place had no A/C. It was UNBEARABLE!!! We were sweating while trying to eat our dinner. By the time we left, I needed a shower b/c my clothes were soaked with sweat and sticking to me. If they never get a/c. I could not go back there. read more

Narah Cafe sponsored a Flamenco show at 1010 Collins on Feb, 12, 2015. Good idea, because now we'll seek them out. Just wanted to give a shout out. Salad: fresh, lightly dressed, the pita 'croutons' were wonderful. Hummus: mmmmm. Not to salty or garlicky. Baba ganoush: smokey flavored, a little more complex than most I usually have. Rice: very aromatic, but subtle. Kebobs: I didn't have the chicken, but the lamb was wonderful. Pita: this is where it suffered a bit. Homemade would have been so much better. Service here is inconsistent at best. Went here two times recently and had no problems. The server was attentive and everything came out in a timely matter. We went again on Sunday night and left after 10 minutes. We waited about 5 minutes for a server. Guy finally comes and asks us to move tables. Mind you, place was empty and he was asking us to move over 1 table for no conceivable reason. Fine, we moved. At the new table, we waited another 5 minutes for menus. This was the worse experience ever-- To begin, when I arrived I was told to sit anywhere. While waiting on my boyfriend, another employee walks up and say sit here--ok fine. Once I sit, a group of employees begin to argue over who is going to cover what section UNPROFESSIONAL!!! So after we are seated, our waiter ask for our drinks. I asked for water--THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN ALL NIGHT. I'm not familiar with hookah so my boyfriend orders and we wait. We receive our hookah with no tips. He told us they ran out but it was new, don't worry. I politely give him the side eye and he finds another one and unwrap it in front of us. After 10 minutes, I decide I want to order and another young lady, white female and I am explaining her race to prepare you for the story to follow, ask if we are ok. I told her yes I needed our waiter for us to order food. I asked for her suggestion and she tells me about the chicken. I told her I wanted that and she says ok. By then, she finds my waiter and I take it she tells him what I want to order. She passes by our table again and let's us know our waiter name (something that starts with the letter D) and she told him what I wanted and it should be out. 15 minutes pass and I have no food. So my boyfriend stops her, because our waiter has yet to come back by our table, and ask how much longer the food will be. She said "the food doesn't take long to cook, let me see what's going on with this nigga". Yep--she said nigga, and MULTIPLE TIMES AT THAT. She comes back and lets us know my food order was never put in and whatever issue I had is with my waiter. So at this point, I'm ready to go. We asked for our ticket to pay for the hookah. Our waiter brings one ticket that charged $17 and she brings a ticket that's about $15-16. Well this is a nice little spot! Didn't try the food but I had hookah, which is why I came. I love how spacious it is and how relaxed it was! I had the guava flavor, pretty good. Split b/w myself and two other friends, it was $4.50. Not bad, a little expensive compared to my favorite hookah lounge (TcheTche in Richardson). Great place to come after work and chill! The food was horrible, but the service was even worse. I had to explain to the rude waiter my meal came with a salad and was met with attitude. Never got checked on. Food came out cold and all wrong. I asked to see the manager, waiter said he was the manager which was NOT true. Went from the patio to the inside to try and pay the check and the waiter came out cussing at us and wanted to fight us. For better or worst...this place has been COMPLETELY revamped, rebranded, rebooted. It's soooo strange. It's not bad, but it's just..."different" that's all. It's like this modern throwback 1960s funky almost tacky feel inside. It's strange if you've been a long time goer her to come to this new and updated format. Idk, my friend wasn't a fan. I appreciated it. They got these "digital fireplaces" which I like. Seats are comfy. Tables till wooble a bit and menus didn't change which is hilarious. I'm a fan of the mint-tea and blue mist flavor of sheesha. Hummus is decent and addicting. Plenty to share. Fries are great, large thick cut. I haven't been to the outside area since it's cold out now. But I'm feeling that it'll be about the same as before but with the new chicer furniture. This new look might take time getting used to. But I think they're better off now as a business to start fresh after the vandalism that occurred here. read more
