    Kung Pao chicken
    Keely A.

This place is decent! We ordered the king pao chicken, veggie chow mein, veggie fried rice, and dry sautéd green beans for take out. Service was friendly. The flavors were good, tasted like basic Chinese food. The quality of the food was high, all the ingredients tasted very fresh. The chicken was nice and tender, the chow mein noodles were nice and thick. My family LOVED this meal so we will definitely be back.

Always good food and service even on Christmas! The hot and sour soup is so delicious! Love the mu shu chicken. Tried something new, spicy prawns which were terrific

Located on the outskirts of Danville Downtown, in the same parking lot as Fosters Freeze and a Mountain Mike's, you will find Nanking Bistro. Parking will definitely not be an issue here, as it's got a ton of parking in the front and also to the side towards the left of the parking lot when you get in. It's definitely in an older building, and you can tell that from the outside and the interior. There are a few tables right out in the front patio area, and when you enter there's a small bar at the front entrance, and the inside has the front of house area and then a slightly more sectioned off area in the back perhaps for larger parties when needed. This seems like a family run establishment as the front of house was run by younger adults, and the people in the back such as the chefs were older. Does seem like this establishment had been here for awhile, so it's nice to see a place like this still around. What they offer at Nanking Bistro is your typical Chinese food spots, and they do have lunch specials that are pretty affordable (for this area at least since right down the street in the downtown area it's significantly more expensive for the same type of cuisine), and a decent variety of choices to choose from. Again, not that will be out of the ordinary to expectations. The regular none lunch specials stuff was also decently priced, so definitely an interesting option for those who want more bang for your buck. Service here was nice. The girl at the counter was certainly approachable, and willing to answer questions about the food, or other things. No issues. We did takeout on this day and ordered quite a few things to try out since it was the first time here. This is where things start to get a bit trickier; the food. Everything was mostly just mediocre to not appetizing. We'll start with the soup, which sounded appetizing when we ordered it, but once we actually saw what we got from the soup, it was definitely not your normal kind of soup from this type of cuisine, and the ingredients used in there just did not blend with the soup at all. There was also supposedly seafood in there, but you could've fooled me with the few measly pieces of it. The fried rice was just not at all what I had hoped for, and even when you look right at the color you can tell they didn't flavor it correctly, and just dumped soy sauce into it in hopes it would taste good. When rice is this dark, and it doesn't taste flavorful, that just means it wasn't cooked properly. Also, shrimp fried rice, but it came with 4 pieces of shrimp. The chow mein was also a bit odd. The ingredients in there are definitely not your typical or authentic ingredients, and overall, the sauce was just really watery and did not have much flavor to it, which was disappointing because I actually had high hopes for it since I do love me some crispy noodle, but this one was just a complete miss on the noodle front. The only thing that was somewhat enjoyable here was the mushu, which wasn't knock my socks off good or anything, but it's exactly what I expected from a typical Chinese spot. No complaints from me with this delicious wrap since the ingredients and the overall taste with this one was actually good enough. There's a lot of things that are good with Nanking Bistro. The price of everything is great for those who want a reasonably priced spot basically in Downtown Danville. The menu will have plenty of options for a wide variety of eaters and portions are even decent. The service here was good as the staff was nice. Parking is not an issue, so there's that. However, when it comes down to the food, it was just a miss for me. While nothing was terrible, there really weren't many bright spots outside of that one shining moment with the mushu, but that was it. Everything else just tasted bleh at best, but I wasn't really expecting too much to begin with in this area, so beggars can't be choosers. Not the worst, but don't have too high hopes for what you're going to get here.

Pork chop with string beans lunch special
    Janet T.

We came here with family. Service was fine. The hot and sour soup was delicious. We enjoyed our meal. I was hoping the ginger shrimp and scallops would have more portion. We substituted pork instead of beef for the lunch special string beans with pork and was charged $2 extra. Overall, I think I would come back only for the pork chops and lunch specials that had descent portion.

Still the best in Danville/Dublin/San Ramon/Pleasanton... Appetizer: * Crispy Crab Cheese Puffs 5/5 * Hot and Sour Soup (the best hot & sour soup) 5/5 Entree: * Hong Kong Style Crispy Noodle with Prawn, Chicken, Beef & Vegetables with Garlic Sauce On Top. Hands down the best HK style crispy noodle. A generous serving of prawns, chicken, beef and veggies. 5/5 * Spicy Green Bean Chicken 5/5 * Honey Walnut Prawns 5/5 The best honey walnut prawns i've ever had. Large prawns, perfectly deveined & crispy. The sauce is perfect and not overly drenched on the prawn. The candied walnuts was sweetened nicely. This dish made me happy. i'll be reordering often :) * bowl of white rice. Food is consistent. Quality is impeccable. And the service is always friendly and just right. See you soon Nanking Bistro & thank you for being so delicious...

Pork Chip with string beans lunch special

A pleasant surprise in downtown Danville. The town has several Chinese restaurants but Nanking stands out a little higher than the rest. I have a friend who eats primarily Chinese food only so we have been trying out the various local Chinese restaurants in town and Nanking was next up. I tried the Pork Chop with Green Beans lunch special and upgraded to fried rice for the starch option. My friend had the House Hong Kong Style Choy Mein with gray with chicken, beef and prawns (you get three prawns with the beef and chicken). The lunch special comes with hot and sour soup and strips of fried wonton ton. The pork chops had a very nice flavor with about 6 pieces and a dozen string beans. The chow mein was good, probably from the seasoning on the pork chops that was on top of the noodles. Soup was good. I had the rice option with my lunch plate on a different visit and the flavor was good. The gravy on the chow mein had good flavor too and a good variety of vegetables and meat. The lunch menu is not very long. Nanking is a family run business so staffing is limited. You'll need to be patient, nice people but at times it might be hard to find someone to flag down. I've been back a couple of times and plan to try some of the other dishes. Good solid Chinese restaurant and reasonably priced.

    Lemon fish ?

When we walked in for lunch, it was empty and no one was there to greet us. We almost walked away as the inside was so dark and gloomy. We were starving so we decided to stay. The lady took awhile to come to our table to take our orders. Food serving was on the small size compared to other Chinese restaurants. We ordered the lemon fish which hardly had any lemon flavor. The beef was served sizzling and very tasty. Food overall is good but the inside decor is very uninspiring and the hallway to their very small restroom looks untidy.

Ordered more take out... Szechuan Beef (3 Stars) The beef was tender and lightly deep fried, but the sauce was too sweet with no spiciness. Spicy Cucumber Salad (3 Stars) The cucumber was fresh and the sauce was spicy. It's was ok but not my favorite House dumpling still awesome. Mongolian beef still great, but could use more green onion. Until next time

Interior, dark and a bit depressing
    Chad G.

Best Chinese food I've ever had. Friendly staff, clean, easy parking. Only downer is that the Interior is a bit dark and depressing. Pot stickers are off-the-hook good. Sweet and sour pork is awesome. Honey walnut prawns are truly epic. Dumplings are amazing. Price is a bit high but you are paying for the good stuff. This will be our go-to for Chinese.

Dining room looks very upscale for a mom and pop operation. Staff is very gracious and accommodating. I was there for a late lunch once. Watched a family of 5 walk in wanting to sit down and order. The restaurant was technically closed for a staff lunch and reset for dinner. The front door was unlocked only to let stragglers like me and another table out after finishing our meal. The server was nice and let the family stay. Great customer service isn't the only reason for the 4 stars. AW has amazing value lunch deals. Love the simple stirfries best. Healthy but tasty. Lots of quality veggies. Highly enjoyed the veggie and shrimp stirfry. The string bean beef is also yummy. My sister thinks their hot and sour soup is great. I love the crunchy woodear mushrooms while she likes the flavor. We both appreciate the kitchen not skimping on the tofu, bamboo shoots and egg. Not everything is a favorite tho. Tried the mushu for takeout once. Didn't enjoy AZ's version. Also didn't enjoy their veggie eggrolls. Wrapper was good and crispy but veggie filling was oddly mushy. Happy to find Amazing Wok as our regular neighborhood place closed recently. AW is a few miles further but it is now our "go to" Chinese American restaurant. Will gladly return to explore the extensive menu.

This is a place where I would order to-go when my family and I crave for Chinese food. It's not the most authentic Chinese food, but their food is still very awesome. I always order their lunch special, especially love their Kungpao Beef with rice. You can substitute with fried rice, which is the best fried rice by far as an American-Chinese restaurant. Lunch special also comes with soup, they usually serve hot and sour soup, but by surprised from yesterday order, they gave wonton soup. First time ever to try their wonton, but unfortunately, it's not my favorite. Soup itself is tasty, but the wonton wasn't that great. I'm not saying it tastes bad, it tastes still very good, but when you bite into the wonton, I feel it is just fill with meat. Maybe I'm used to shrimps are in the wonton. But this is still my favorite American-Chinese restaurant in the area, I am sure I will keep coming back.

The wines by the glass are awesome, if you like Chard, like my wife, they have Frank, Rom and Far Niente, all for $18. That is a steal for all 3, especially Far Niente. Most place charge $20 to $25 in Danville and rarely see Far Niente by the glass. The prices look reasonable on all the wines by the glass, so go get some! They also have great cocktails ($16, great price), my 2 favorites so far are Watermelon Seduction (4 Stars) and Pomtini (4 Stars, get on the rocks). Their bartenders mix the perfect balance, never too sweet or tart, just right! Food notes: Tang's Fried Rice (3 Stars, $30 with chicken, beef, shrimp, so 2 Stars) The base price for fried rice was $19, ok pricy but if you ask for combination fried rice (chicken, beef and shrimp), the price is $30, $11 increase. They charge for each protein, ridiculous! The rice was not that great, they didn't use a long grain rice, some sort of short grain, but not fat, still thin, like the rice was broken in half. All the ingredients were fresh, but nothing special. And the egg, no large chucks, just tiny bits mix in. Szechuan Green Beans with chicken (4 Stars, $20 with chicken). The green beans were fresh, not overcooked, still slightly crunchy. The sauce had some heat and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Roasted peanuts were added, nice touch! Rolling Lettuce Cups with Chicken (4.5 Stars $17) The lettuce cups were perfectly cut from the head lettuce, no ruff edges, easily separated and large. One of the best execution of lettuce cups I've seen! The chicken filling was also awesome! It was not serviced with plum sauce, kinda missed it, but instead some thin sauce, good, not sure exactly what, but definitely not plum. Pork Belly Bao (5 Stars) Really good, get some! Mongolian Beef (3 Stars) The beef was thin sliced and good quality, but the sauce was to sweet, heavy on hoisin, plenty of sliced onion and green onion. No heat. Kung Pao Chicken (3 Stars) I liked the shiitake mushrooms, but the rest was just okay. Shu Mai (4.5 Stars) Really good filling to the top, good size dumping (almost have to cut in half to eat) serviced with chili sauce. I mixed some table soy and chili sauce together, perfect dipping sauce. Yo's Rock Shrimp with Sriracha Mayo (3.5 Stars) Good quality shrimp, nice and lightly batter, deep fried but not over cooked. Until next time...
