I don't typically leave reviews, let alone bad reviews, I normally just move on from the experience, but not this time. After a long day at work, we decided to order takeout and run to pick it up. Husband walks in and the owners (?) are yelling to each other across the restaurant about our order and how much we tipped to pickup our food to then take home and eat. We ordered two entrees, they come with no rice, and it was over $40, tax and tip. I tipped them $3 because I am picking up my own food and it is two items (again no rice included in the $40+ for Kung Pao and General Tso's). The food was good - but kindness and customer service go a long way, especially in today's world. We recently stopped by China Gourmet in search of a last-minute dinner. They were open, and none of us could remember why we hadn't been back before. We ordered several dishes, but the one I wanted to highlight was the mapo tofu. It's one of the kids' favorite dishes, and we make it often at home. We just didn't feel like cooking, so we decided to order it instead. The mapo tofu was mostly tofu in a thick sauce, with little else in it, and we'd expected it to include some kind of meat. The service was very pleasant, and it was lovely to see how warmly they greeted their regular customers--it made the place feel homey. In my husband's words "it was probably the worst Chinese food I've ever had." I just threw out all the leftovers because there's zero way we'd eat it again. We usually get Nanking in Danville and only strayed because they were closed for the night. Never again. Mushu pancakes tasted like literal paper, chow fun was flavorless, and broccoli was so severely overcooked we could only take a few bites. This restaurant is tucked away in the Smart and Final shopping center, and many would never knew it existed, only by word of mouth or passing by it while shopping in the nearby stores. Food: 1.Lemon Chicken {5/5 stars, $12.95} - Sweet and tangy lemon sauce with just the perfect amount of breading with juicy and tender chicken inside. One of my favorites. 2.Beef Chow Fun {5/5 stars, $10.95} - Large flat rice noodles with delicious veggies from onions, bean spouts, and green onions. Some may find it greasy, but ours was not. 3.Kung Pao Tofu {4/5 stars, $9.95} - Spicy vegetarian dish with huge chunks of tofu with mixed veggies in a spicy sauce. Tofu had weird texture though. I ordered only 2 things: ==================== * Fried Potstickers -- standard fare, only 6 for a whopping $10.95. Booooo...way too much. * Pork Fried Rice -- I love Pork items, but the fiance doesn't...so I order whenever I can. I also love it eggy, and paid extra for it. Well, it wasn't really eggy (a minimal amount), and mostly rice instead of pork, peas, carrots, onion, etc. In conclusion, I just can't give it a higher rating. Solid, no-nonsense take-out Chinese food - the typical not so healthy, but oh so tasty kind of joint. They do have indoor seating, and I've eaten there several times (pre pandemic, and during the pandemic), but the ambiance, size, and format of the restaurant is such that most of their business is takeout (if you dine in, you'll be the only table dining there, but you'll see a very steady thrum of takeout orders). Aside from their Chow Fun, everything here is rock solid A-/B+ for reasonably priced takeout Chinese food - I've eaten here for quite a few years, and have tried most of the menu, and surprisingly, some of the less common items on the menu happen to be their best. The fish dishes for example are very good - and they are generous with the portions. The Hong Kong noodles are another less commonly ordered dish - but they're particularly good here, and again - portions are quite generous. For those of us who are a little "higher maintenance" China Gourmet has been flawless with special orders. If you don't see items, you want listed on the menu, or you want to mix the components of one dish - with the sauce of another, or have special dietary requirements and/or allergies, they're incredibly accommodating and take special requests with a disarming level of enthusiasm. To date, they have never made a mistake on our order(s), and we ALWAYS have some special dietary requests/instructions. If you're looking for fast, reasonably priced, tasty Chinese food with healthy portions - look no further. If on the other hand - you're looking for high end Chinese food, or Chinese food that is ultra clean (IE: almost no oil, everything steamed - nothing fried, etc) - keep looking. Sure, you can ask them to go easy on the oil, and order all the right dishes to be as healthy as possible - but again, this really isn't that sort of a place - nor do they pretend to be.
