I really want to love this place, but it never fully hits the spot as I want it to. I originally thought it might be because I couldn't appreciate the authentic flavor, but my Taiwanese/Chinese friends were also left with disappointment. We usually order the regular and spicy beef noodle soup. The regular lacks flavor and the noodles have zero flavor cause they're u able to retain the broth flavor. I would recommend the spicy over the regular. They go generous on the chunks of beef. The beef pieces are really tender and delicious. It gets really crowded on certain nights, and packed with families. I've had to wait to be seated several times, but generally I'm seated within 10-15 minutes. There's a $20 card minimum so bring cash if you're with just one friend. read more

What happened? This place was a mainstay for beef noodle soup. Last Sunday it was so inedible to the point that we couldn't finish it. Noodles were completely undercooked. The beef broth had a sour flavor. Oyster pancake was good but the sauce was way too sweet. Tofu with veg was light and easy tasting. Who can screw up salt and pepper fried squid? That was decent. Nice small restuarant with a huge variety of dish choices. I definitely recommend the seafood noodle casserole- its around $17 and kts a huge pot filled with delicious seafood and vermicelli noodles in soup! Egg and shrimo is also great. From the outside you can barely tell it's a restaurant.. even their name doesn't sound like a restaurant. My childhood friend recommended us eating at this place and what a gem! I believe they are focused towards being a Taiwanese restaurant. They offer some traditional Taiwanese breakfast which a lot consists of something soup-like with a lot of carbs like fried dough. I went back for lunch and ordered the pork chop over rice. I was expecting the salt and peppered version but this one came out with sauce over it which was just as delicious. The entire dish comes with pork chops, rice, ground pork, radish, some greens, and a hard boiled egg. Overall super satisfied and left us super full. Not sure if we made their lunch special but the price was surprisingly cheap as well. I'll def be back to try their other dishes. read more

I was dissapointed to learn that they had a grade pending posted at the door. I make a rule to never eat at a place without a grade, or if a restaurant has a C- letter grade thats another good hint that the place may have some kind of serious infestation and or rodents. Well i always look up the grade and inspections in the NYC web site. As it is of great concern to find out that a restaurant only cares to make revenue by sacrificing cleanliness, sanitation and public trust. This lack of concern and disregard makes me upset. I give them my hard earned money, since they are in the neighborhood; i order from them all the time. Service is horrible. I have ordered in this restaurant for take out multiple times, always missing an item or two. I understand that that there can be mistakes when it gets busy but not every time right? Plus it's also their attitude that needs to be changed. No apologies for missing items over the phone, instead, the girl asked me over 6 times maybe I made a mistake to recheck the my bag. It seems that they have a new set of waitresses here on Sunday. We were seated in the back in the biggest table. Two minutes later, a waitress comes over and asks what we want. "We just sat down, we'll need some time to look at the menu". 3 mins goes by, the waitress comes back, "are you guys ready yet?". "No, we'll need more time", 2 mins later she returns. We told her we wanted a hot and sour soup to start first. She recommended this higher price soup but it didn't fit any of our palates so we declined. "Then I'll come back to take the entire order" she replied with an attitude. Umm.... what does that suppose to mean? Just because we didn't go for your choice, you cop an attitude with a stank look? Not cool. We were a group of 10 so we needed to incorporate what everyone wants. Luckily they switched to another waitress, and she was slightly more pleasant. But that just kinda ruined our whole eating experience. Plus, after eating in Canada, our food standard had raised up a notch, and these soup dumplings can't come nearly as close. I come here on a semi-regular basis with my family. It's pretty decent for Chinese/Taiwanese food. Plenty of street parking which makes it preferable to Flushing. Three things I'd recommend here: 1) Ma-Po Tofu (Sichuan style spicy tofu cubes topped with minced pork) - very flavorful and goes well with rice. I eat spicy so to me it's not painfully spicy; I'd rate it 3 out of 5. 2) Beef Rolls (sliced beef rolled into scallion pancake, drizzled with char siu sauce) 3) Three Cup Chicken (boned chicken chunks w/ basil) - tender and juicy. Some traditional Chinese breakfast items (e.g., pan-fried egg wraps / dumplings) are available throughout the day as well. Level of crowdedness: For dinner I'm usually here on weekends but we've never had to wait for seats, or the wait was short enough to slip my memory. I've been here for breakfast once on a weekend; came near noon and we didn't have to wait to be seated. Overall: decent, affordable Chinese food. If you're health-conscious you can also ask for less salt/oil/sugar, but they don't always comply so just bewarned for that. read more

This is a place if you crave for taiwanese breakfast. The fried culler is a bit hard to chew. I most likely will pass on this item going forward. I am disappointed with a policy of the restaurant. I ordered Taiwanese breakfast Saturday morning at 10 AM. After ordering, I realized that I forgot to order the fried crullers, which are my daughter's favorite. They said they don't sell crullers at that time, and I said I was surprised that they were sold out. When I arrived at the restaurant waiting for my takeout order, I noticed that folks eating in the restaurant were able to order crullers. I asked for clarification and was told that they only sell crullers to folks who eat in the restaurant and they do not sell crullers for takeout orders. In the past, when I ordered takeouts at 9 AM, they would sell crullers. The above is my review about a month ago. At the time, a "George K" contacted me through Yelp and apologized for their restaurant policy regarding selling crullers only to dined-in customers and had communicated to me that they will rectify the situation. Further, he communicated that for my next order, I will receive a 10% discount for which I expressed my thanks. Today I placed an order and when I arrived I provided my information to the cashier lady and expressed to her that George K had provided me a 10% discount. She claimed she did not know a George K, and a man who was either a manager or an owner declared that the they never give discounts. So, either George K who seemingly has authority to respond on behalf of Nan Bei Ho on Yelp is bogus or if he is not bogus, he has no authority to give discounts. All in all - a very disappointing experience with this restaurant. I believe George K is George King, the son of Angela Mao, who is the owner of the restaurant with her husband. Angela Mao was once a martial arts movie star during the same era as Bruce Lee. read more

We usually get the scallion pancake rolled with spicy beef, potstickers, vegetarian steamed dumplings, fried bun with chive and eggs, radish sou bing is good but only weekends, sweet soybean milk. They have so much more but I just listed some of my favs for breakfast If we order for lunch we usually get the Taiwanese Mei fun, there lions head (pork ball casserole) is delicious, fish filet in black bean sauce, stinky tofu and pork roll. Great food and location to meet up with some old Bayside friends. The parking is plentiful as compared to meeting up in Flushing or Elmhurst. This review is mainly based on the experience. My family went there this past Sunday for lunch and one of the dishes we ordered was the stinky tofu, 3 ways (or 3 precious ingredients). They dish didn't come out right but I figured it was supposed to be like that. When I got the bill I asked why the charge was $20 for just tofu and the waitress responded it was supposed to be with other items. Long story short, I asked for a partial refund and they said there were issues with the payment system and couldn't refund it. In response I just said I won't add on tip and it'll be included. They agreed and I left. I checked my credit card statement 2 days later and they added on a 20% tip and charged my credit card. This Taiwanese place was not too bad. I would say 3.5 stars. They have metered parking but I found parking on the side street. There was no one in the restaurant when I got there. I waited for 20 minutes for my food on a Friday night (around 5:45 pm). I ordered the family meal and selected the following: -Three cup chicken(chicken was moist not too salty) -Salt and pepper fish (this was a favorite) -Pork chop Peking style (pork was good, red sweet sauce with onion) I would go back and order dinner again. Today's special beer duck.is.pretty good. Got lots of herbal flavor but probably more of an adult taste. My two children 10 and 5 didn't like the "smell". Three Cup Chicken is delicious. We also order the Mango Slush and it's bit sweet and tarty. However, I do advise against any cold drink made with honey. Apparently, they added "hot" water to "melt" down the "thick" honey so that it is easy to make drinks with. However, it tasted really "wrong". I have yet grasp a word to describe what's wrong with water down honey flavored drinks, but just don't do it. You will not like it and probably end up arguing with the "big gentleman" who made it. This place has a special place in my heart. My Taiwanese family & I have been eating their food for over 15 years, from back when they were located on 40th rd til now. They have a 3 dish 1 soup special that is really worth it. I love the braised pork belly, tomato egg, and ma po tofu. Used to love their san bei ji (3 cup chicken) when I was a wee lass. I have been coming to this restaurant for years. It used to be located in Flushing, but it has relocated to Bayside. There has been more variety on the menu and the location has definitely expanded. I still ordered my favorite dishes (Chinese Egg Scallion Pancake, Beef Noodle Soup, and Soup Dumplings). I have to admit that I was disappointed in the Beef Noodle Soup, it was too oily. There was not enough flavor. Also, I still enjoyed the Chinese Egg Scallion Pancake and Soup Dumplings. The pancake was not too greasy and the egg was crispy.
