Finally had the opportunity to come here for dinner today! Been wanting to visit since we saw it while visiting Crystal Cafe for breakfast a few weeks ago. Plenty of parking in front across the small road. Entry through a revolving door was unusual (exit had a normal door option). We were quickly seated and ordering on the digital tablet was not difficult. We avoided the combos and ordered meats a la carte. Restaurant was clean and our booth was roomy. Ventilation was great, not smoky at all despite the bbq going on at each table. When the ban-chan came we thought they had given us the wrong order... there was so much in variety and quantity! Beef bone soup, potato pancake, namuru spaghetti, onion lettuce salad, fish cake strips, kimchi, and a gourmet-looking plate of sliced tomato with yellow pickled radish and yukke! Amazing! Service was attentive and friendly and our tea and ban-chan was refilled quickly on demand. Then the meat came and the quality was very high. Thick cuts and plenty of it. The service was very slow, and the staff did not appear to be familiar with the menu or how the all-you-can-eat option worked, making the ordering process confusing. We ordered several appetizers, but they were the last items to arrive, which defeated the purpose of ordering them first. We also ordered rice, but it wasn't brought to our table until we asked about it after waiting quite some time. Since rice is a staple accompaniment to Korean BBQ, it was frustrating to have to wait so long for such a basic item. Quite surprised to see Namdo having a relatively low rating here on Yelp - I had a great experience dining here. I came with a large party of 10 on a Saturday evening, in which we were split into two tables. We came during happy hour, so we opted to get the happy hour special, which consisted of 4 types of different meat IIRC (pork belly, brisket, bone in short rib, and something else?) and some sides. We also got some appetizers like fried chicken. Food was delicious, well past my expectations. You do have to grill your own meat, but everything is marinated and seasoned well. I would say the thing that puts Namdo apart from other KBBQ joints is their side dish selection. They had a great variety of stuff like yukhoe, tofu, some spicy noodle dish. The meats were good quality, but we were most impressed with all the variety of side dishes that come with the combo. They are not your typical sides. Our party was excited to try a new Korean BBQ in Bothell. If looks and presentation were worthy categories for a 5 star review, I think Namdo would deserve it. Unfortunately, the dining experience fell short of expectations. Heres why: We ordered the Namdo Special (Regular, $159) which comes with premium banchan (side dishes) included. The banchan exceeded expectations! Some noteworthy side dishes were the beef tartar, fried potato pancake, and pickles sampler. The meat quality was above average with again excellent presentation. The brisket, ribeye, short rib all come unseasoned, so dipping into sesame oil, salt, soybean paste, and their house sauce is a must. For a family of 4 ordering the regular special set, the total price after tip and tax is $200. For an establishment that presents itself as a unique and higher-end KBBQ restaurant, $200 does not include the staff changing the grill or cooking the meats. It is expected to cook your own meats at lower-end KBBQ or at AYCE. For this set menu, we expected more staff service to pair with the presentation of the meal. Our party left with our bellies full and content with visiting. However, at this price point we expected higher quality service, noting they are running understaffed and reminders were necessary to clear plates, items to be brought to the table, and to check in on how we were doing. I think others would agree that Namdo has areas to improve in for the level of service, execution of dining experience, especially for the volume of food offered at this price point. It was such a great first experience walking into this restaurant on a whim while heading somewhere else. I'm glad we decided to change our plans. My husband and I were greeted warmly and seated promptly. We arrived right when they opened, so we were among the first to get in. The restaurant was decorated in a cultural style throughout, and the booths were charmed with Korean children's books. Our server asked whether it was our first time there, then explained how the ordering process works. We started with a delicious appetizer, pajeon (pan-fried seafood scallion pancake), crispy on the outside, warm and well-seasoned inside. Open kitchen, nothing to hide here. Food storage proudly displayed with clear glass. They take food quality seriously. Ordering is easy. For the pros there is a touch screen. Servers were attentive for first timers at the establishment or first time eating this cuisine. We opted for the $30 per person combo which came with all the KBBQ staples. Pork belly, steak, marinated steak, and marinated pork. The highlight of the meal were the banchan dishes. Yes the normal kimchi and fish cake was offered. The onion and lettuce salad was elevated. I normally don't like marinated meats but every plate of meat was delicious. - the small beef combo had 7 dishes of meats. Not huge portions or each, but I appreciated the variety and quality, over quantity. - They gave 2 sauce options and I don't know what was in them, but they were freaking delicious! - the Beef combo came with different options for a side stew. We went with their new risotto which was a mix of beef, rice and noodles. It was delicious!! - the staff were SO kind and helpful! We found it to be over-priced and it doesn't provide some of the staples as far as beverages, that all other restaurants offer. We asked for a glass for the water that was served and were told they don't have any, only the cups used for tea. We noticed other tables had tall plastic cups with straws and then asked a 2nd time, pointing out to the waitress that they existed on other tables. She said she wasn't sure they had anymore and would look; they did and she provided them. Our meals came with rice, which we had to ask a few times for and were through half our meal before we received it. We were excited to hear about a new Korean restaurant in Bothell so my husband, myself, and mom in law gave it a try during its soft opening. It pains me to write this review but we all left disappointed. I love to support local Korean restaurants (I'm Korean!!) but overall, this restaurant was expensive and equally stingy. We understand it's a soft opening and they have to work some stuff out. Nevertheless, here's my overview: 1) The banchan/side dishes were high quality. I loved the beef bone broth soup in the beginning. The down side is that refilling the side dishes cost $5 so make sure to finish all your side dishes! Maybe offer 1st round of side dishes as free and then $5 for 2nd round (?). There was about three pieces of kimchi and the pickled sides were small piles. The salad was pretty but the dressing had no flavor. 2) Rice did not come with our order/meal. We ordered ddukboki appetizer, beef brisket, and pork belly a la carte and ended up having no rice because we didn't want to pay $3 per rice - that's $9 for 3 people. This alone won't have us coming back. 3) The ddukboki looked great but unfortunately barely had any rice cakes and mainly was filled with extra stuff. For $15+, not quite worth it. 4) We arrived at 1:30 pm and ordered pajeon (seafood pancake and our favorite) only to find out they ran out (?) after we ordered. We recommend you indicate this on the online portal so customers are not disappointed. 5) The quantity of meat was very small. There was a small plate of beef brisket and three long pieces of pork belly. We usually end up full after KBBQ but we were still hungry and ended up going to McDonald's afterwards (no joke). They gave us one mushroom top (literally 1) to go with the beef brisket. We split it into two tiny pieces for my husband and I. 6) The menu and ordering all goes through a screen on one end of the table so expect one person to handle this part. I had to read off all the menu items to everyone and we ended up asking a physical menu for my mom in law who was older. Hopefully they can accommodate methods of ordering for all generations or have a QR code so everyone can at least look at the menu. 7) Customer service was not the most memorable. The kids were polite but lackluster. We were checked on once only throughout the meal. I feel like for a soft opening, you want to be slightly more generous so people can speak volumes about their experience and refer other people. Their business model (charging for rice, side orders, lack of exciting and invigorating customer service) won't be sustainable. We love the AYCE KBBQ Palace in Bellevue but live in Lake Stevens so we want a go-to Korean BBQ place to go to that is closer. I'm so sorry for the tough review but hope the owners see this in making some improvements with eliminating charging for rice and side dishes. PLEASE DO NOT NICKEL AND DIME customers. You will lose customers before you gain :(. Thankfully one of my kids was familiar with the process--from a different place. I was greeted courteously & enthusiastically. They prepared a delicious kimchi fried rice with a few signature Korean appetizers to go; beautifully packaged to preserve flavors & temperature. Cold noodles were too sweet and did not have very many toppings, broth, or ice and was somewhat bland, even with 1/3 bottle of vinegar and the tiny hot mustard that was provided. It was also not very cold. Fried chicken was not typical of Korean fried chicken reminded me of fast food chicken tenders and most of the basket was filled with fries (this would be good for kids). (I mixed it and took a bite out of it before taking a picture). Daenjang jjigae - size small. this was the most disappointing dish. Please refer to the picture - this is BEFORE anyone took a bite of it. Few pieces of tofu and few small pieces of beef. I would've expected some pieces of zucchini or potatoes. Worse than a free side you would get from an AYCE KBBQ. Not appetizing. So definitely not worth it for $15. Now, when I say not traditional/typical korean restaurant - only lunch comes with sides. Dinner is served with a small side of radish kimchi and a small side of regular napa kimchi. Overall liked the atmosphere. I was so excited for a new korean restaurant to open up in the neighborhood. Honestly, I think this is the best Korean BBQ I've ever had, including in Korea! I think people may be expecting a typical cheap Korean BBQ place, but this restaurant is much nicer. We have friends who live in Bothell and we went down two days ago to visit them... as we got off the freeway we noticed that Bone Fish has been changed to Namdo Korean barbecue. Since we were going to be there for two days we thought we need to go try it out. We googled it and some of the pricing and reviews kind of made us change our minds so we almost didn't go... but as I said, we love a good Korean barbecue! So with what we knew we went anyways today for lunch.... Not only was it a great experience but all the food was absolutely amazing! Including the banchans! They were above average and next level for sure... We paid only $19.99 a person for four different meats and it came with a soup, onion salad, garlic sauce to dip your meat in and I think probably four other banchans... there are things on the menu for every budget and there were some seriously high-end meals as well, but I think whatever you are in the mood for you would find it on this menu!! My family just tried the new Korean place behind the 5 guys in the shopping center up the hill. So glad we gave this new place a try! We had the best restaurant meal we've ever had together. My son had the first soup he ever liked. There was Something for everyone. We got the lunch special and my twins raved about the ingredients and the interactive fun of the hibachi put it over the top. Plus it was about half the price of filling up on sushi. Our family tried tons of Korean bbq places in LA, NorCal, and here in Washington. Namdo side dishes all had their own unique flair that embraced the traditional while adding something different. Soups, chicken, and bulgogi were all spectacular. Whatever adjustments were made since the grand opening was done well, if adjustment were even made! Service was fantastic.
