Nell Gwynn Chinese Restaurant - Don't say I didn't warn you!

Ok, what the heck is the deal with a Chinese restaurant called "Nell Gwynn's Parlour?" Who would'd…read morethought that a little alley with a simple red Chinese sign saying "Rice/Noodle" would have such a gem of a northern Chinese cuisine? But let me assure you, this place is a gem! Hubbo and I were in Windsor for a day trip and actually JUST had lunch. We walked down this little alley cause it's cute and came across this gem of a restaurant. I was curious and looked at the menu posted on their window. In its English-Chinese menu, I saw several dishes that were interesting to me. My lingering eyes must have given a not-so-subtle hint to hubbo, who sighed and said, "we can go in and try a few dishes if you want." Say no more.... Upon entering the restaurant in this late November afternoon, it was empty. An older gentleman came over and handed a menu to hubbo and a different one to me... a full Chinese menu. So let's just say that the English/Chinese version posted on the window has a few dishes that excites me? Well the full Chinese menu almost made me fall out of my chair. There were all kinds of goodies in that menu. Some noodle soup are not offered in any average Chinese restaurants even in Chinatown in London. Some were really what I considered comfort food that my mom would make. Since we had JUST had lunch, I could only order a noodle soup (pickled vegetable with shredded pork noodle soup) and pot stickers (mainly for the hubbo, who loves pot stickers). The noodle soup was soooo delicious, just like the way my mom makes it. The pot stickers were surprisingly tasty as well. After our meal, I couldn't help but be curious how this little Chinese restaurant survives (especially since it was empty when we walked in). Do people around here know enough about the good ol' bowl of noodle soup? Do they suffer from being so tucked away? The lady behind the counter and I started chatting and turns out, this restaurant is well-known by Chinese tour guides. So all those tourists from China, Taiwan, etc, come here for their meals when visiting Windsor. Which made perfect sense why the food is so authentic and doesn't break your bank either.... As we were leaving, I heard her on the phone, talking to probably a tour guide. She mentioned about 30 people coming in 5 min. As we walked up the alley, sure enough, I saw a line of Chinese tourists headed down to their restaurant lol.

A family friend is a fan of Nell Gwynns so I have eaten here a few times when it is his turn to pick the venue. The food is OK, it's not bad but not remarkable either. I've tried to order dishes with alterations to how they are described on the menu before and been turned down flat by the waiter. If it's all freshly made I don't understand how this can cause a problem, but it did. Final nail in the coffin for me is the single star food hygiene rating. If food is your business then I expect you to be hygienic in the preparation of that food, I'm not going to be rushing back here.

Very well laid out and looks fairly new too. Lots of statues wood carvings etc. Even a few ponds and a mini bridge. The lighting level is low and really sets the scene. The pay one price and eat what you like is better than most in so much there is a large choice and the food is delivered to your table The food taste was great and although the food didn't always come out at the same time it was worth it The waiters try to double up portions and are quite strict what they will or will not do and at times can be quite rude. In fact they are a riot and very rude Drinks are extra. Good selection We ate as a large family group on a Sunday lunch time It was a good Resteraunt as far as the decor and food choice and quality was concerned. The big down side was the staff. Abrupt. No interpersonal skills. No interaction. My recommendation would be either change the staff or go self serve I wouldn't return

After looking at the windows of several Korean restaurants on Burlington Road, I settled on Me You as having the best local reviews up in the window. The atmosphere was like a local family restaurant with no rush to turn tables over. Although the waitresses didn't speak good English, I was eventually able to get the advice I was seeking on the food. It helped that the menu had a picture of every dish available. I was also impressed that the waitress taking my order gently suggested that 3 dishes might be too much for even a greedy pig like me! And she was right as the portions were big. I started with the Haemul Pajeon (Korean Seafood Pancake). This was lovely - crispy on the outside with small bits of seafood and spring onion. I also had a bowl of seafood with noodles in a spicy soup - I think it was called koppongi. I was startled to find not just a mussel in its shell but also whelks still in their shell in the soup - proves that the seafood was fresh and not frozen! The soup was spicy enough to wake up the tastebuds I'm starting to get a feel for Korean food after a few visits to Korean restaurants. Their food philosophy is the opposite to the Japanese, which rely on few flavours and ingredients but each flavour is distinct and obvious. On the other hand, Korean food is a whole melange of everything thrown together - meat, seafood, vegetables, flavourings. Even bibimbap, which is served with all the ingredients in separate piles in the bowl, must be all mixed together and coalesced before you tuck in. I enjoyed my visit here and have spotted a few dishes I would like to return and try.

Since moving to London, I had been having great difficulty finding authentic Asian cuisines (Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, etc.). After being let down at Jee Cee Neh on the same block, I decided to give You Me a try, given the favourable reviews. PROS - Very comfortable, intimate and inviting space. Greeted warmly when we stepped in and immediately had a table cleaned up for us. The menu had pictures for EACH item, making the process of deciding which item to get extremely hard because well shit, I wanted everything. My date and I finally narrowed it down to an order of the large dumplings, spicy black bean sauce with noodles and the oxtail soup. We were blown away. The "large dumplings" weren't really "dumplings" per se, but actually hot fluffy buns filled with a generous amount of yummy pork and veggie filling, served with an equally yummy (soy sauce/vinegar/hint of red pepper) dipping sauce. It was such a good deal as well for those suckers. For about £6, you get 6 large hot and fluffy buns. That alone could be a meal but that was filed under "appetizers" in their menu. The spicy black bean noodles was done perfectly, I don't know what else to say about that except the noodles were fresh and the sauce was just so freaking good. The oxtail soup was not bland, but just a sip of it will let you know they have stewed it for a long time. The soup was no instant bouillon type of nonsense. It was the real deal. The soup was served with complimentary Korean rice. Another HUGE PRO - Complimentary refills on your BAN CHAN. That's right, not only did we get more banchan (the side dishes they serve you to refresh your palate) here than at Jee Cee Neh, they immediately restocked our banchan, free of charge when we ran out. How awesome is that? That alone would make me come back to try their dishes but will everything going to fabulously, I would be crazy NOT to go back. CONS - Absolutely none. I was so pleased with the quick service, the amazing food for great prices, and the portions (above average!). Shoot, even the bathrooms were really clean. Everything was so great. POINTERS - You Me kicks Jee Cee Neh's hind quarters out of the bush ..........yup. Pictures to come!
