First time in Brixton , I heard about the Brixton Market. Many cuisines to choose from and this one stood out from the location. The menus are on the outer tables and as I looked, a server asked if I needed help. I told him I was just looking I came back to this spot and was seated on the inside which was cozy for one or 2 people . The wall had writings from visitors so I added myself and my podcast website . Quick service and great eats I had the pulled Pork which was good and a side of fries. It came w coleslaw on the burger which was huge. Great music was playing I hated to leave it glad I came. I couldn't put it off any longer. I'd promised that I'd come down soon and try their new pulled pork buns, and it was Jay Rayner's tweets about their food that prompted me to beat the masses and get in early on a cold Friday night. The market was strangely quiet, no doubt because everyone was already on their way to the Brockwell Park fireworks, so we didn't have any wait for a table and got straight down to business. You'll find The Food Joint at Unit 87 BVM or, to you and me, where Breads Etc and Heritage Deli operate during the day. The owner, Dan, has run several evening operations here, including a ridiculously good and extravagant supper club, but this simple approach suits the market perfectly. I opted for the pulled pork bun with BBQ sauce. The pork itself, with the sauce and slaw, is excellent. My mouth is genuinely watering whilst I type. For something so simple, they're not shy on the detail. Dan explained the effort put into getting the bun just right, which he changes depending on the cut of pork he gets each week. When I first lifted the bun to my mouth (not an easy feat because it's so darned big), you could smell vanilla. Lord knows what he'd snuck into the buns this week! I mean no disservice to the 'wrap' option but, well, just don't bother. The sides aren't to be forgotten either. The tasty ribs come wrapped in a brown parcel to ensure they're entirely smothered in sauce when you eat them, and the corn is served with garlic and herb butter in its skin. The menu is simple. The food comes quickly. You can bring your own beers to complete your meal. Yes Honest burgers round the corner are excellent, but move over gourmet burgers, because pulled pork is the new king. read more

New places are popping up in Brixton market on a daily basis. It's been around for a few months but only operates at night. Serves pulled pork. On a desperate attempt to get a table on a Friday night at Kaosarn we ended up here, as we were out of options, patience and had a lovely bottle of white to accommodate a BYO place. Service was quick and efficient - very "lets feed people quickly", however not pushy to leave your table and extremely friendly. The food was good. Like very good. And cheap. We had a pulled pork bun each and two sides and the whole thing cost 20 pounds. Food-wise, here's what we had: Hush puppies: I still don't know what they are, big dough balls with corn (maybe fried cornbread?) with corn kernels inside, dipped in BBQ sauce; delish. BBQ pulled pork buns were massive, delicious and flavourful. Excellent quality, generous quantities and fantastic presentation: simple and to the point. We've also had some BBQ spicy chicken wings that tasted much better than nearby Wishbone (a shame, given that Wishbone specialises in gourmet fried chicken). Would I go back? Definitely. Brixton market is the place to be and the options there display an excellent array of various cuisines, all crafted with passion and at fantastic prices. My only suggestion: stop pretending to be hipsters and put chips on the menu. This is England, chips are national dish. read more

This place has amazing pulled pork and chicken on buns, but no proper hamburgers -- if that's what you're craving, pop over to Honest Burger a few steps away in Brixton market. They don't serve chips or fries either - this is proper barbecue fare. Normally, it bugs me when I have to order a burger and a side separately. I was also mildly annoyed that the prices advertised in the menu online were lower than the actual prices on the menu when we arrived - I guess they increased their prices recently. However. The Joint serves expertly marinated and smoked meats. I had the BBQ style chicken thigh which comes with bacon (no-brainer: when in doubt, order the thing that comes with more bacon!) The reason why I didn't mind having to order sides separately in the end is because the portions are MASSIVE. I probably made a mistake going to eat here while I currently am suffering from a sore jaw and can't open my mouth too wide... All of the sides come smothered in BBQ sauce. At least, the onion rings and hush puppies did. The hush puppies have a bit of a spicy kick at the end to them. Come with an appetite and be prepared to keep eating no matter how full you already are... From what I can tell they don't take reservations and there are only a handful of tables, so come early or be prepared to wait. read more

Slightly overrated imo but still very good. We wanted to get honest burgers but the wait was crazy (admittedly ordering takeaway was viable) so we decided to try the food joint instead. The menu is simple and mostly features slow-cooked meat in a bun (they also have ribs). I ordered the pulled-pork. This was served in a sourdough bun with coleslaw, lettuce and bbq sauce. It was too daunting to eat straight up so I picked away at it with my fork. Loved the bun! It has quite a distinctive flavour. Pork was good but given the plethora of pulled pork places that seemed to have popped up, this one didn't distinguish itself from the crowd (rib man is way better for instance) Their bbq sauce seems homemade - it was sweet, tangy and on point generally. They didn't have enough of it in the bun but were happy to provide a bowl on the side. Tried a bit of my friend's ribs and was slightly disappointed with the flavour. Lack of alcohol license is probably the main downside to it but there's a place next door that does takeaway beer. They were also playing some pretty good tunes. While I'm unlikely to repeat it, it was really enjoyable. read more

If you like pulled pork, you HAVE to try this place. In the Brixton Village, The Joint has a great vibe and and even better food. It's been a friday night each time I've visited, but not had to wait more than 10 mins for a table. It's cash only and BYO, so come prepared! There is a bar opposite however where you can get a takeaway pint/wine to bring back to The Joint. Anyway, the food, amazing. A giant stack of pulled pork, coleslaw, leaves and a magnificent vanilla infused brioche bun. Fantastic. We started with the bbq wings and onion rings which were delicious too. This has to be one of my favourite underrated burger places in London. Such a simple menu but everything on it is soo tasty. My favourite would have to be the BBQ chicken burger served on their homemade bun with their delicious coleslaw. The flavours are unforgettable and even better, they have free BYO. The staff are great, friendly and attentive, and food is quick but the staff never try to push you out of the place. Perfect for dinner and drinks on a Friday or Saturday night before going out or a casual after work dinner. Best BBQ joint in London, and being an American you should take that seriously. The special of the day I ordered was a beef brisket sandwich with a potato bun, sweet chilli sauce, crispy onions and pico de gallo. Typically mixing a Latin flavour like pico with BBQ would be weird, but the coriander gave it a nice zing. The real treat is in the sauce, which I believe to be a Carolina style BBQ sauce (mustard/vinegar/honey based). Only thing that could have made it better would be a bit more of a smokey flavour, but hey, that might be asking a bit much for a BBQ joint outside the states. Pulled pork buns are six-or-seven star quality. Perfection from the bun to the pork to the fillings; I prefer the Asian-style ones, but to each his own. Sides are a bit hit-and-miss. When I first went here I had the best wings I've ever tasted; since then they've given up removing the tips and have overcooked them and oversauced them. PULLED PORK! Okay, I have your attention now? Good. A few weeks back, the boyfriend decided to take me to this place to taste their Pulled Pork Burgers (with capital letters). Because he was going ON and ON and ON about them, and I NEEDED to try them. This small joint is lost in the middle of Brixton Village. So hipster you actually get to sit down on crates and eat off a kind of hand made table. It's okay, I actually like the "al-fresco" style dining, and street food is my thing. I was going to get a wrap when I got told off by the man: "The buns are part of the experience". Oh, okay then. I decided to let him order for me, since we was the expert. And there it was, my BBQ pulled pork burger, sitting between a sweet sweet and delicious corn bun. And yes, yet delivered. The pulled pork was really good, the seasoning was perfect and the size enough to not necessarily need sides to feel guilty about. So why only a 4 stars? Service. I really hate it when I get the impression I am being a nuisance and annoyance to the waiter, just puts me right off. Went back on 2 occasions. A couple of weeks ago went to the popup they have at the Shoreditch Streetfood Festival. What was amazing is the guy in the food truck recognised me from my Instagram pics, and offered me 6 wings for free! And they were really really good. Also went last night. Sunday is a quiet day for them, so if you don't feel like queuing then it's definitely a good day to go. The buns were just as good, and I love that you can byo wine or beer. A great find in Brixton Market. Be prepared to wait in the queue because this place is always busy. The food is delicious though, so well worth the 15-20 minute wait. It's all about meat - brioche rolls loaded with pulled pork, zingy BBQ sauce and coleslaw. Awesome. Try the onion rings. They come wrapped up I'm brown paper and string bags and are perfectly crispy. Sitting on benches under heaters in the market, combined with the fact that the food is really yummy, not pricey and it's BYOB makes This place is a huge hit. read more

I've eaten here twice and both times had the pulled pork burger. The first time I thought it was devine! Delicious smoky, tender pulled pork and that sweet brioche... And the sauce!!! Just, wow! However I went again recently and ordered the same thing and it just wasn't the same. I went quite late so it might have been that they had run out of sauce but the burger was a little dry for me.
