This has been on my Chicago list for a while. A friend and I got the tasting menu, each ordered different things, and split everything, so we covered a lot of ground on the food. But this review as always is mainly for the labeled food pictures (of course). Our waiter told us that our drink selections were the most popular (Khubani, the orange mezcal apricot drink) and the Aam (the green slightly spicy mango tequila drink). The Khubani was both of our favorites and I thought the clear winner. As a general critic of life and food, here are my thoughts: I'd have to say the winner was far and above the crispy barramundi (Tangra Chili Fish) small plate. I don't know if this can come as a big plate, but it should, I wanted so much more of this. The VV Puram Thatte Idli was fine, the Murgh Makhani (butter chicken) tasted exactly like it was supposed to, the Patra Ni Fish (Barramundi in banana leaf) really needed the side sauce it came with to be elevated- otherwise it tasted like barramundi that could have been seasoned a bit more, and the Naan was excellent. An add-on we ordered was the Benne Masala Dosa, which I thought was fine but likely not worth the added fee; if you are a lover of this dish, the waiter said that this dish was highly regarded at Nadu as the chef is from the region of origin- and my friend confirmed that this one was done perfectly. Desserts: The Mawa Cake or the Mango & Tamarind Sorbet was the best. The cake was great because the edges were crisp, cake warm, and the ice cream cold, the combo worked well. The sorbet is more simple but exactly what it was supposed to be. The Tutti Frutti Cassata was good, but I don't think the layers worked together as they should have. It was fine, I just wouldn't select this over the other options. General notes: I feel as though a mark of a good ethnic restaurant is when people of that ethnicity eat there, which there was not shortage of. read more

Tried the tasting menu and it was a bit of a mixed bag. The highlights were definitely the drinks - refreshing, creative, and the perfect start to the meal. Our server was incredibly helpful and guided us through a menu that does a great job representing dishes from various regions of India. My Indian friend gave it a thumbs up for authenticity! The prawns were a standout and packed with flavor, and it was fun to experiment with the different sauces and curries throughout the night. Tell me why the free papad and chutney was my favorite dish of the night RIP. The walleye and the beef roast were a little dry, which was a disappointment given how promising the starters were. Great experience at Nadu. Our server was super helpful in helping us select food and drinks. The vibe was really cool and the space was bigger than I had expected with what looked like a private room upstairs. We opted for the à la carte menu, but the $60 tasting menu was super tempting, just didn't have one of the larger plates that we wanted to try. Both drinks we got were good. I had a smoky, fruity cocktail which was better than I expected and the chai whiskey cocktail was also really good and not as spirit forward as I expected. We started with the lamb kebab which was a really great start. The sauce had a little bit of spice to it, but was really creamy and the lamb was super soft and really flavorful, too. For large plates, both the goat shank (Kashmiri Roganjosh) and butter chicken (Murgh Makhani) were really good. Both dishes had a lot of sauce (hence the garlic naan AND rice) and were super soft and tender. I have to put the goat just above the chicken though because it had the right amount of spice and a bunch of different flavors and it was reallllly good. The chicken was good too but I felt like you really needed a lot of sauce each bite because the chicken by itself didn't have a lot of its own flavor. We also got a side of dal which I thought was really tasty and tasted pretty similar to what I've had in India! All this for two people and we ended up with some leftovers!! read more

The food is so close to home that I have taken all guest that visit me from out of state. We usually go for the tasting menu to enjoy more. My most favorite place is the jackfruit Kosha, flavored just like it was made back home. The Dahi Bhala reminded me of streets of Delhi and the dessert was a pure showcase of how culture can meet new methods. Was craving butter chicken and had this place saved. Got here right when they opened at 5pm and they sat us at the bar. I chose the khubani (apricot) cocktail and it was tart and refreshing. We got the benne masala dosa for an appetizer and it was sooo good omg. I'm sure what makes it so good is all the butter that's used lol but it was perfectly crispy and flavorful. Both chutneys were also delicious, but my favorite was the coconut one. It definitely made me full before our other food came out though. I got the butter chicken, garlic naan, and basmati rice. The butter chicken was soo delicious, creamy, and perfectly spiced. I was upset I could not finish it all because I was getting too full. Would love to come back again!!! The food here is amazing and unlike anything I've had before! I'm not versed in Indian foods but my partner has had a lot and he really loved this food as well. The Meen Pollichathu which was sea bass wrapped in banana leaf was by far the star of the show and would definitely get that again. We did have a few negatives with our experience. All our courses from the tasting menu were coming out at a great pace; not too fast or slow. Then after our entrees were served we did not see or have really anyone come to the table for what felt like an hour. As we waited for our desserts we were getting confused because at that point we had been sat at our table 2 hours before... once desserts were served we got the wrong ones (apricot delight when ordered the sorbet). A happy mistake since the apricot delight was really delicious. For ordering a tasting course menu I wouldn't think it would take 2.5 hours to finally be given our check. Visited Nalu during Restaurant Week with a group of six, and we ended up choosing from the à la carte menu since the Restaurant Week options were quite limited -- honestly, the best decision because the food was absolutely delicious. Every dish we tried was flavorful and beautifully prepared. The service was excellent and the chefs were very warm and welcoming. We were celebrating a birthday, and the team helped make the evening feel special. The ambiance is lively and perfect for group dinners or celebrations. There was a small hiccup at the end when we received the bill -- a few extra charges were added by mistake through the system. Once we pointed it out, the staff was very apologetic and corrected it quickly. It seemed like an honest error, but I'd recommend everyone double-checking their bill just to be safe. The only area I'd suggest improving is the restroom situation. The bathrooms are gender-neutral and limited in number, which led to a line almost every time we went. It would be great if there were more restroom availability to better accommodate guests, especially during busy evenings. Parking were available on street but as it was weekend we got a paid one and that worked out well as we didn't find street parking as it was weekend. I came here for a nice dinner with my parents and it was a great experience! The space is very modern and spacious with warm tones and various seating. The service was great - the staff were very attentive and friendly. The wine selection was great, and the wine that we shared paired very well with the food. We shared everything - we started with the dosa, prawn dish, an iraní keema. The minced lamb dish was very flavorful and the dosa was light and tasty. The prawns were also nicely cooked and flavored. We shared the butter chicken and paneer ghotala with white rice and garlic naan. Both dishes were delicious - I enjoyed that they were not too salty like I've had at other restaurants. For dessert, we shared the apricot delight which was like a tres leches with Indian spices. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Visited on a Saturday night for a double date during Chicago Restaurant Week, and Nadu delivered a memorable experience from start to finish. The space immediately sets the tone! Vibrant, modern and elevated by beautiful flower decor that add warmth and texture without feeling overdone. I visited Nadu with my family for a birthday celebration and enjoyed the experience. The food was nice, and the extensive menu has dishes stemming from various regions of India. The curries were aromatic with the Kashmiri Roganjosh and Murgh Makhani being my favorites. Some of the plates had a nice spice to it as well. The mango gelato with a tamarind sauce for desert was unique and refreshing too. However, I thought the food was a little too expensive for the quantity of meat in each dish, especially compared to other Indian restaurants of similar caliber. While the food at Nadu is good, it does not stand out enough to command the higher prices in my opinion. The service was excellent though. Our waiter was knowledgeable of the menu and gave us some good tips on what to order. They also cleaned up our table often with fresh plates. Moreover, the interior is well decorated while the atmosphere was quiet and laid back. Overall, I am glad I tried Nadu and think that it is a good choice for Indian food, but it doesn't offer the same value you can find at other places. We went to celebrate my birthday and have a first time experience at a tasting menu. I had heard many things about the world renowned Chef Sujan being partnered with this restaurant so I thought it would be great to try a tasting menu where you can pick each course. We were warmly greeted by a staff member and taken to a table upstairs. There was tableware set nicely and a candle on the table. We started with mocktails, which they offered 4 variations. The options we selected were Gulab, Copenhagen and Cream Soda(passion fruit option). The Gulab stood out the most with a nice sparkly rose flavor mixed with spice. The Copenhagen was fizzy with tea and lightly sweetened. The Cream Soda was way too tart and a recommendation there would be to take it down a notch in tartness and add a bit more sweetness. We started the tasting menu with pappadam and their version of a thin soup with a banana chip. The starter was crispy and paired nicely with the orange sweet chutney and spicier green chutney. The soup was thin and had a kick that hit you in the back of the throat. The soup was nice but also was a bit salty. Next course: Yogurt-Based Chicken This was nice and tender but could have been cooked a bit more. There seemed to be slight parts that seemed undercooked. Flavors were there but wish the cook-off was done better. Next course: Additional dosa course (extra $11) The dosa was a thicker one with a crispy edge. The masala was all over the inside of the dosa along with the potatoe mixture. My recommendation here would be to make a thinner dosa like it should be to enjoy the crisp and less like a traditional uthapum. The orange chutney was nice and sweet that reminded me of a peanut sauce and the coconut chutney was amazing! It was a bit thick but not bad in taste by any means. Next Course: Murgh Masala (traditional butter chicken) Here, I have the most complaints. It was way too sweet to be a savory dish and way too tomato flavor. The chicken was not what I thought. It seemed like there was a dark color around the chicken as if it was fried or something before drenched in the sauce. The chicken was not what I expected and lacked flavor. The only taste I got was sweet tomato. This dish needs work. Next Course: Dessert (Apricot Cake + Mango Sherbet) The cake was not as airy and spongy as I thought and a bit dry. There needs to be more of the milk drenched from the bottom of the plate and again the sherbet was tart which needs to be dialed back a bit to taste the sweetness of the mango. Mentions: we also tried the daal makhni and kadai paneer: the paneer dish was very dry and paneer typically has some moisture within it so disappointing there. The daal makhni was stellar; it was a great mixture of a creamy lentil with flare. Overall, the experience was cool to try a tasting menu but the items were hit or miss. The tasting menu is very reasonably priced and does a good job providing exposure to a variety of flavors, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. I like the idea of taking a bit of the best flavors and dishes from various regions of India. I'm not sure there was any dish that stood out as incredibly excellent but all the dishes were consistently good. The add-on from the tasting menu was a dosa which I thought was particularly great. The cocktails were just OK, might not get a cocktail next time, but that's fine as a lassi probably pairs better with all the food instead anyway. Looking forward to returning. read more

The bar area has little hooks under the counter to hang your bags or coats. We visited Nadu for an early dinner and decided to go with their four-course tasting menu. Since there were three of us, we managed to try almost the entire menu. To start, they offered dahi bhalla, pappad, and chutneys. Starters: Each of us selected a different starter - we went for the Tangra chilli pork, jackfruit shammi kebab, and kalmi murg kebab. Main Course: For the mains, we chose the classic butter chicken, Kerala beef fry, and fish wrapped in banana leaf. We also ordered dal makhni and garlic naan to accompany the dishes. Dessert: We ordered all three options - the tooti-fruti cassata, sorbet, and apricot delight. Everything tasted fantastic, but the dahi bhalla, benne dosa, and butter chicken really stood out for me. Hailing from Kolkata (East India), fish is always my favorite protein, but the paturi did not stand out this time. Wow! Probably the best restaurant on the Lincoln Corridor! We came on a Tuesday night and tried the tasting menu ($55 per person). It was a great value covering 5+ courses and I left very full from my meal. They offer cuisines and entrees from various parts of India also highlighted on the menu. The service was great. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the entire menu, ingredients, regions, and what made their version special. I was very impressed by her knowledge and friendly service. The restaurant is exceptionally clean, felt polished, and is well decorated. Not too loud and you could easily have conversations at your table despite it being a busy restaurant. We ordered a sprite and a mango cream soda to start. Both were great but at $10 for the mango cream soda, I don't think it was worth the price. We then decided to order the masala dosa and the paneer gotala as starters and decided on the paneer malai kofta as the main entree. I loved the masala dosa as it was nice and crispy and didn't have the extra sour taste some dosa places have. The paneer gotala was creamy and cheesy and quite the indulgence with a nice (Indian-level) spicy kick! The paneer malai kofta was also exceptional and paired with the porotta made it next level. We also loved the complimentary mukhwas at the end with the bill. Overall we loved our dinner here and were glad to see a higher end regional indian restaurant. I am so happy to have a more casual option from the chef of Indienne, which completely blew me away. The only downer was the table next to us had a idk rude/aggressive/demanding woman next to us. I get your husband has an allergy, but her husband wasn't really eating and just kept telling her to order whatever she wanted because she shouldn't have to be penalized for his allergy. Maybe it was a life threatening allergy idk but I thought she could have been nicer to our waiter. Remember it says a lot about you how you treat service people. But the food: the tamarind ginger ribs are what dreams are made of, very craveable, also enjoyed the butter chicken and the gushtaba (lamb?) meatballs in a creamy gravy (photo). I enjoyed the dessert my husband did not because the waiter likened it to tres leches and hubs said it wasn't moist enough, that's okay there was saffron and coconut milk (?) so I was scraping the plate. We came by Nadu on a weekday for dinner. Despite being fully booked on OpenTable for the night, the restaurant was basically empty when we got there. It filled up by the time we left around 6:30pm but still many open tables. I think if you're interested in eating here, you could easily walk in around 5pm at open despite OpenTable saying the restaurant is fully booked. The ambiance is a bit simple and doesn't quite match the upscale menu items they have. The decor is very minimalist and gave a more fast casual vibe. Service was top notch. The cocktails are imaginative and very unique. We tried quite a few and all of them matched up to the flavors noted on the menu. I would definitely come back just to sample some drinks. We ordered a lot of items on the menu. In general everything tasted good but didn't feel like it offered much different to justify the price points. The crab and sea bream were both done well but felt very very overpriced for the amount of food we got. The crab was also pretty messy to eat and I think it generally would have been better (considering it's a $115+ dish for one large Dungeness) if they had deconstructed the crab more for easier eating. Overall, glad we tried it. Food is solid but pretty overpriced. Would come back here for cocktails. read more

Checked out Nadu with a few friends for dinner. We have been meaning to make it to Indienne, but for budgetary reasons were happy to try Nadu first. The restaurant is a lively, large space, and we were seated in an upstairs alcove towards the back, which was a little more cozy. We had a lot of questions about the menu given we are big sharers, and we were curious if the tasting menu portions would allow some flexibility on this front. Our server did a great job of fielding our questions and assured us that there were enough bites per tasting plate to work around amongst the four of us. At $55/person that made it a no brainer, and we ordered a wide variety of dishes so that we could taste as many things as possible. The chutneys and pappadum were a great start, and we were all quite impressed with the Rasam soup, having not expected such a big punch from the opening course. For appetizers we tried the Tanga Chili Fish, The Chicken Kalmi Kebab and two orders of the Aritha Pundi. The chicken portion was quite generous and very well flavored (comfort vibes on a plate); the fish takes a more indochine approach and was a table hit, (I would advise to watch out for the green chilis though!), and we enjoyed the rice dumplings, but had second thoughts about doubling up on those. We also added the $11 shrimp supplement, and those were quite flavorful. For mains we had the Kadai Paneer, the (Kerala) Beef Roast, the Murgh Makhani and the Meen Pollichathu featuring sea bass. Of those dishes, the beef and the chicken were the clear favorites. While the others were good as well, the sea bass was a bit of a textural challenge to cut. The flavors were all spot on though. We got two orders of garlic naan, rice, and some dal to round out the sides. Finally, for dessert we had the Apricot Delight cake (favorite!) and the Tutti Frutti Casata. It was plenty of food, and we left stuffed and even had some small remnants to take home. Our party brought some wine, which we had opened for a $35 corkage fee. And one group member also enjoyed a mocktail and pot of chai to conclude the meal. I will say, I do think the experience might benefit from larger water glasses given the spice levels can hit people differently, but the service during the meal was very attentive to refills. All in all, this was an excellent experience at a real value of a price point too. I would highly recommend checking out Nadu. read more

We were so excited to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint! Amazing service and a beautiful ambience with upscale design/decor. The cocktails were SO good and we loved all the vegetarian dishes. Some of our favorite dishes were the dosa, jackfruit kosha , paneer Ghotala, and dahi bhalla, and aritha pundi were all fantastic. I was so excited to visit Nadu! After hearing about Chef Sujan's newest venture, I was eager to try this restaurant as soon as possible. Let's just say - I was not disappointed. Ambience: 5/5. I loved the atmosphere here. The use of the lighter woods with pops of color really reminded me of India and the designs there. The chandeliers on each side are stunning. Take a moment to get a good look at the mural! Awesome piece of art Food: 5/5 - the concept of regional dishes is totally achieved by the setup of their menu. I thoroughly enjoyed both dishes I had Drinks: 5/5 - I really loved the focus on specific ingredients. Both the Til and the Chai cocktails were amazing. I loved the harmony and balance in the drinks. I am really impressed with Nadu! My mom and I went there to celebrate a special occasion. I had made a reservation a couple of weeks in advance. The interiors give off a modern Indian vibe, with simple decor and unique wall art that mixes Eastern and Western styles--I really liked it. For appetizers, we ordered the Dahi Bhalla and Benne Masala Dosa. Both were absolutely delicious! I haven't had such good Dahi Bhalla at any restaurant before--it was soooo flavorful. The dosa was just as tasty; we were close to ordering another one. I also tried the Murgh Kalmi Kebab, which is chicken marinated in hung curd. It was super soft and juicy--just melts in your mouth. It came with a side of ladi pav, which was a different twist, and surprisingly went well together. For mains, we had the Dal Makhani with Nola Paratha, and I was again impressed. The dal was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. Loved it. The portion size for sharing menu is good for 2 people. We tried two drinks--Kokum and AAM. The kokum was a spicy and savory mocktail with carom seeds and roasted cumin. It had a very refreshing and different taste. The AAM was nice too, but I'm excited to try their Khubani and Haldi next time. Their fusion-style cocktails are really unique. To end the meal, we had the Apricot Delight and Indian Bouquet. The Apricot Delight was amazing--it had soft sponge cake, apricot, and fluffy cream. It was light and just melted in the mouth. What was even more exciting was to see Chef Sujan personally going to tables to share his recommendation based on a table's choice. Overall, Nadu is a must-try! The food, drinks, and vibe were all amazing. I'll definitely be going back. read more

The food is good. The menu highlights dishes from various parts of India. The naan is fluffy. The curries are rich and flavorful. I love that you can find mangalorean and orissian cuisine, which are difficult to find elsewhere. But....its too expensive for what it is. It didn't feel like a fine dining experience but it's definitely priced like that. The NA drinks we got didn't have garnishes. This wouldn't have bothered me, but expensive drinks need to be pretty. Also they were the weakest part of the experience; it tasted like frooti with soda water. Maybe the alcoholic drinks are better? We ran out of naan and had to wait in the middle for a bit until we got another order to start eating again. This wouldn't have bothered me but again expensive places need to pay attention to the details. They need to run a tighter ship for fine dining, but otherwise solid. Also they save plenty of tables for walk-ins so you can definitely drop in on a weekday. read more

TLDR: Overall very mid experiences. High prices for small portions, with okay tasting food. Just not worth it for me. Had a reservation and showed up 5 minutes prior to the reservation time. Wasn't sat until 15 mins AFTER the reservation time. Paneer Ghotala and garlic naan were good. Ordered the butter chicken as a main which was so underwhelming. Chicken was tender but curry was just okay. For being called a "large plate" it wasn't very large. The place feels like it's trying to give fine dining with the prices and the portions, but food and experience were not. Our server was nice. read more

TL; DR: Tasting Menu was great to try different dishes and filling Came in on a Friday night at 7:30 and the place was busy as ever. The service was a little slow once we sat down and took a while for our server to greet us. But once we ordered, we were off to the races and the dishes were timed perfectly timed out. The tasting menu is $55 per person and was filling enough. Top dishes on my list were the TANGRA CHILI PORK, KADAI PANEER, and DAL MAKHAN. I would go back here and order larger dishes that I liked or try more on the tasting menu read more
