What sets it apart is the…read moreattention to quality--much of the menu hits the open-fire grill, giving the food that charred, smoky flavor you simply don't get from your average fast-food spot. The house-cut fries are another huge plus: fresh, crisp, and a noticeable step above frozen fries. The menu is packed with Chicago favorites, service is quick and efficient, and there's a solid variety of drinks to round everything out. When it comes to classic Chicago fast food, I'd personally choose Fatso's over Portillo's and most other spots in the city. A true hidden gem that deserves more recognition.

I won't lie: I have driven by "The Baron" maybe 500+ times, and nearly every time I drive by, I…read moreswear I'm going to get a burger there sometime next week. Fast forward to the now, and last week I really did go to eat lunch there. And I'll give it this much: if you need to spend $11.60 on a burger, fries and a cup of water, there are many, many worse options out there. The Baron reminds me of Chopper's on Ashland Avenue; it's not date night material, but it is "I'm getting lunch with two guys from work to talk about the game last night" material. The burger was good (not great; and, it's cooked medium well to make sure nobody gets diseased on the thing) and the fries come out perfect, hot and plentiful...I couldn't even finish the half-pound burger plus all of these fries. There is free parking and service was pretty quick. And the booths are clean enough, especially if you are in your blue-collar work clothes (I'm not sure you want to wear your white linen suit here). I'm not sure if this will be in my rotation, but this exceeded expectations for sure!

I was…read morereally hoping this would become one of my regular lunch spots since I now work in the neighborhood, but after two tries I'm not sure I'll be back. The first time I ordered the Philly steak, and there was so little meat on it that I actually checked my order again to make sure I hadn't accidentally ordered some kind of veggie sandwich. Definitely would not order that again. On my second visit I tried the hot dog. It was just okay, but I asked for everything on it and somehow it came without tomato, mustard, pickle, or celery salt. Basically I got some onion and relish. I gave the place a second chance because I really wanted to find a good local lunch spot, but two visits and two disappointing meals is probably enough for me.

It's a small spot, and it was busy when I went. The staff were super nice and welcoming, too. But man, the food is what really got me. I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich House Style, which came with cucumber coleslaw, dill pickles, and chipotle buttermilk ranch. And instead of regular bread, I got it on a biscuit, which honestly took the whole thing to another level. The biscuit was soft, crumbly, with that buttery flavor that paired so well with the fried chicken. Calling this just a sandwich almost feels wrong because the whole thing was an absolute mess in the best possible way. The chicken was the star, it was crunchy, red golden and incredibly juicy. The Nashville hot sauce brought a spicy kick that hit right away and lingered, while the dill pickles added a sharp, tangy bite. The cucumber coleslaw brought a cool, refreshing crunch, and the chipotle buttermilk ranch added a creamy, smoky flavor that helped bring everything together. I even added some honey making the sandwich even better. The sweetness softened the heat just enough, creating this sweet-and-spicy combination that made every bite more exciting. There was so much happening, sauce everywhere, toppings sliding around, and absolutely worth the mess. Roost absolutely delivered. I came for a chicken sandwich, but that biscuit made it something else entirely.

Typically most restaurants "close at 9PM" means, they stop taking orders at 9PM. In lieu of we need to close the kitchen at 8:30PM to be out the business doors by 9PM. But a friend and I are planning a big trip with our kiddos and we needed a spot to chat about it. I ordered the classic burger (no pickles please), and it was good and quite filling. Next time I will not order the large fries, because they are not kidding when they call them large. The fries were huge and a small or maybe medium would have been plenty. The fries were really good, and pretty crisp, which I much prefer to limp French fries. I got some ranch dressing too since I prefer that for my fries. My friend got the patty melt which she liked a lot; she wasn't sure because of the giardiniera but it passed the test. The staff was helpful, and the restaurant was pretty clean. The parking situation in this shopping center is garbage, though. I am positive that the developers made the parking spots slightly smaller than what is standard. I've come here before and wondered if the cars were more closely parked together than other places. Most recently when we came for epic burger, the cars on either side of mine were just over my forearms length apart. I opened the door for my toddler and she had some trouble getting in initially, so if that's not evidence of the too-small spaces I don't know what is. Thankfully she's in her helpful era and she helped me get her buckled into her car seat since I could only get one arm in at a time. I couldn't open the driver's side door wide enough to get into the car, so I had to wait until the other person came back. (Shout out to the folks that had been sitting next to us in the restaurant; as they were leaving they said that they told the man who's car it was that it was parked too close so they must have seen me hanging out by my car.) So if you do check this place out, I'd consider parking further away in the lot if you're over a size 6.
