This post-COVID review focuses on the inside and staff of N/Naka. The wait staff are consistent and provide details of the thoughts in preparation. The entire menu reflects 15 years in operation and respective Michelin stars early in its establishment. At first, I thought I would still be hungry, but the tastes, quality and presentation really added to my dining experience, which was wonderful. I was celebrating an early Mother's Day on this occasion and appreciated the artful creations from each dish. My favorite was the steak, which has the rich taste of a quality A5 beef, which melts in your mouth. Next was the quality of the fish served, which each having its own story to be told. If ever you have the desire to dine here, be sure to make your reservation on Sundays a few weeks before your celebration.

n/naka is a restaurant that needs no introduction. It remains at the top of many lists--some being "Best Japanese" and "LA Staples," while others are "Must-Visit California Restaurants" and "Memorable Places to Go to Forget." I am one of the people who watched Chef's Table in its early days, which was also in my early days of being interested in food as an art form. I had enjoyed watching Chef Niki Nakayama talk about n/naka and her cooking philosophy, but at that time, I didn't really know what it meant to put in the level of work and dedication she and her partner Carole Iida have put into n/naka. I thought, "This food looks beautiful," and "I hope I get to go here someday," but not much more beyond that at the time (I was living in San Jose, didn't ever think I'd live in LA). As time went on, I began to understand what must go into establishments like n/naka. It had been ten years and hundreds of restaurants since I'd seen the Chef's Table episode, and n/naka was still a place I knew I would feel honored to be able to experience. My partner and I were preparing for our upcoming Japan trip, and I proposed we maybe try to snag a reservation here as a close to our 30th birthdays celebration. I had to try three times, but I finally got a spot in June this year. At the time, I had no idea how truly special and exceptional this night would be. So we made LA weekend plans around this dinner, a couple weeks after returning from Japan. It had been a wonderful trip overall, with plenty of delicious food, and not only did we get to celebrate turning 30 there, my partner also proposed to me at the top of a mountain. It was really an unforgettable experience. We were still on a high from it when we came to n/naka. Despite still clinging to the memories of all the fresh food we tried in Japan, we were still wowed by how good this food was. Their kaiseki-style tasting menu is a delightful blend of Japanese and Californian, and even without the surprises that they slipped in here and there for our combined birthday dinner, we were feeling pleasantly full from the amount of food. The lighting was smooth, the ambiance was relaxing, the pacing was perfect, every person we interacted with was so professional and personable, our sake paired extremely well with every dish we were served, the presentation was stellar, and everything was prepared impeccably well and tasted delicious. Delicate and bold at the same time. The highlight of the night was when Chef Nakayama came out to our table to thank us for dining at n/naka. She had brought up several topics we had discussed with different employees throughout the night, and wished us happy birthdays and congratulated us on our engagement. As our dinner continued, we saw her go to every table around us throughout the evening. It seems that this is a popular place both for people to celebrate huge milestones in their lives, as well as for regulars to have a weekend dinner. A final and lovely touch was the parting gifts they give their guests. A poppyseed pastry, a bag of tea, and a thoughtful, handwritten thank you card. I can't recommend a visit to n/naka enough! We left feeling so complete. Such a wholly remarkable experience. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in LA.

Probably the best meal I've ever had in my life! Definitely in the top three. We went to celebrate my son getting into a masters program for grad school and to celebrate his 21st birthday. At $400 pp I felt we needed some reason, haha. It was a special menu to celebrate n/naka's 15th anniversary. The food was exquisite. My favorite was probably the spring ocean trout in a miso brown butter snow. They gave us a special dessert with a birthday candle. And then after the meal Chef Niki came out to say happy birthday to my son. It was a very special meal and I look for forward to my next excuse to go back!

I've been trying to get into n/naka on every visit I've made to LA for the last 10 years. So it was gratifying to finally be able to snag a reservation this time. The restaurant did not disappoint. It is clearly one of the best in Los Angeles. Everything from the vibe to the quality of the food to the friendliness of the servers was exceptional. With a meal this wonderful, it's difficult to name a favorite course, but I would have to say that the pasta dish surprisingly was right up there with the very best that I've had. Of course, the fish quality, the sushi, the sashimi were all also wonderful. The other thing that sticks in my memory was the quality of all of the soups from the first little taste during the amuse-bouche to the final course. Each one brought a complexity that you rarely find in a supposedly simple bowl of soup. If you can get into n/naka, I highly recommend it.

Kaiseki style dining experience with fresh, high quality ingredients sourced mostly across Japan and California. Probably one of the more famous LA fine dining destinations for almost fifteen years now. The service from the greeter to the servers was wonderful. Definitely expected at a spot like this and they delivered. The vibe was intimate and elegant and the renovated space was simple, yet beautiful. Think darker wood and grey stone tones. Towards the end of the meal, Chef Niki Nakayama came out and greeted us as well! Truly a wonderful and memorable meal! With my socio-economic background, this place for me is definitely one of those 'special occasions/treat yourself' type places. Which despite me living within walking distance for years, kept me from going sooner. I was either waiting for a good time to attempt to go, but then came the notoriously hard reservations. Luckily, I never attempted to make a reservation myself, so I was able to bypass the frustration many others go through. I was very fortunate in how I got to experience this place. A buddy of mine hit me up out of the blue and told me that someone from their party had to drop out so they had a extra spot. It so happened I ate a lot of PB&J sandwiches that month so my budget could absorb the cost. I didn't have a special occasion to celebrate, but decided to take the plunge because this would be the easiest reservation to get here and I get to experience it with a small group. Was it expensive? Definitely. Was it worth it for me? Most definitely. As of early 7/2025 the cost of the menu was $365 with the wine/sake pairing being $195 I've been told that the menu changes up often, so here's what I had on my visit (I opted for the wine/sake pairing): Sakizuke - candy cap mushroom, caviar, roasted shiitake, carrot cream, kurozu Zensai - homemade steamed tofu, ume somen, watermelon raindrop, wagyu tsukune, totate kakiage, opo squash, burrata tartlet Modern Zukuri - scallop, dill, tomato, myoga, goma tosazu Owan - hamo, opo squash, yuzu Otsukuri - traditional sashimi Yakimono - tachiuo, baby cucumber, bainiku ponzu Mushimono - kinmedai, artichoke manju Shiizakana - spaghetti, abalone, mentaiko, truffle, kaiware Niku - A5 wagyu, green garlic, black garlic tomatillo Sunomono - watermelon, aka tosaka, wakamomo, junsai Shokuji - nigiri Mizumono - melon sorbet, sansho WINE/SAKE pairings - Nanbu Bijin - sparkling sake (dry, delicious, and a great pairing with seafood or pretty much anything we had) Le Chene Marchand - sauvignon blanc Ohmine "3grain Summer's Arrival" Matsunotsukasa "Azolla 50" Junmai Daiginjo Gruner Veltliner "Ried Stein" 1oTW Izumibashi 'Rakufumai' Junmai Daiginjo Cabernet Sauvignon "China Blue Vineyard" "Catskills" Junmai Daiginjo Riesling "Morstein" Spatlese

The service here is phenomenal and is truly one of those things to experience at least once in your life. I was fortunate to have dined here at least twice. Don't let those portions fool you--you'll need space for each dish. I appreciate Chef Niki's attention to detail and artistry. At the end of the night, she stepped out to talk to us and included certain details that she learned about us during our dining experience.

I don't know if it's because of the female chef, but every dish seemed so delicate and made with such care. One tomato soup that left a particularly deep impression was...

Simply amazing. n/naka was everything I had hoped it would be, plus more: the dishes were masterfully crafted, the bites and flavors were absolutely perfect, and the service was as good as it gets. Devin, our server, was extremely attentive and fun to talk to through the 3 hour service. Niki personally went to each table to say thank you and our night ended with a Polaroid photo to take home!

I wondered if this place would be overhyped after having seen it featured on Chef's Table nearly a decade ago. It absolutely lived up to the hype. The service, attention to detail, and care is apparent from the moment you book a reservation. They followed up with us a few times to go over dietary restrictions and the day of, we were greeted with the most personable crew. The restaurant itself is minimalist and discreet - you'd easily miss it driving by. And I think in many ways it speaks to how underrated Chef Niki's vision for her work is. The ambiance really makes room for the stunning dishes she and her team make. The playfulness, creativity, and honoring of ingredients is so wonderfully done. She never repeats a dish - that must be maddening! And we went for their 15th anniversary where she brought back old dishes reimagined...we were blown away. She came out to say hi to each table and was so humble and thoughtful...uncharacteristic of so many chefs of this caliber of genius. Worth it.

This is a long over due review. I wish yelp would just let me post reviews with images only. It is probably my 6th or 7th times at n/naka. And they are still my Top 3 restaurants in LA ever since the first time I went. Consistency matters, and Chef Niki does it EVERYTIME!!! I will let the images speaks for itself!

It has been 3 years since our last visit and unbelievably, I loved our meal even more! The staff were so friendly and made us all feel so comfortable throughout the evening. It was easy to see how much thought and effort went into each course of this amazing meal! So many favorite dishes from the Bafun Uni Joyu to the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Sukiyaki. YAKIMONO with Live Scallop, Broccoli, Shiitake, in a Brown Butter Ponzu was delicious! A big thank you to chef and the entire n/naka staff for making my birthday meal so special.

The grilled fish with pine needles was heavenly!

We have been wanting to come to N/Naka for the past 10 years. Finally we made it in January 2026! This is the best dining experience we have ever had. The restaurant ambience is very cozy and comfortable, the decor is minimalistic and Zen. Our server John was very attentive and friendly. The food at N/Naka was superb! The appetizer plater was packed with delicious little dishes, everyone of them was so elegantly tasty. The black cod fish grilled in pine needles was so delicately tender, juicy and tasted like from another world. The sea urchins from Santa Barbara tasted so fresh and sweet, the fatty tuna melted in our mouth. The pasta with Mentaiko and black truffle tasted heavenly, the flavor just exploded in the mouth. In addition to the nigiri sushi sets, The chef also gave each customer a hand rolled blue crab sushi roll - so good! At end of the meal, Chef Niki Nakayama actually came over and greeted us. We felt so privileged to meet her in person. Chef Niki Nakayama was so graceful and warm and let us take a picture with her. Our entire dining experience was so wonderful and memorable that we kept thinking and talking about it even after we left LA. Comparing to the other one star Michelin restaurants that we had been to, we totally believe that N/Naka deserve Two Michelin stars! There are NO doubts about it. We can't wait to go back to N/Naka again!

    Matt I.

We recently had an opportunity to return for a second time to n/naka for another incredible experience! Absolutely loved the new look of the restaurant after the renovation. It truly feels as though you have been transported to another place entirely. The service staff were wonderful and I did also notice improvements from my first visit there as far as service flow. The food was of course impeccable and the attention to detail was incredible even going so far as to plate my dishes in the opposite order of everyone else's because I'm left handed so the the dish's description would make sense for me too! I truly believe that this restaurant will not only reclaim its second star but also has a legitimate chance to make it all the way to the coveted three star rating. Thank you to Chef Nakayama and all the wonderful staff at n/naka for another perfect experience!

    Ask the Community - n/naka

Is this a good place to take your husband for his 50th birthday?

    Absolutely!

Is it possible to get the "regular" menu (not the vegetarian one) without raw fish? Or would doing so diminish the experience because of the number of raw fish courses that would have to be changed.

If I remember correctly, there were two courses with raw fish. They might be able to replace with vegetarian dishes. They're very accommodating. I had the regular kaiseki with no meat.

How does one snag a reservation? I have been trying every week on Sunday and button mashing the refresh button up until and past 10am and they're all gone.

I had better luck getting a table of 4 then 2. So playing with party size could help, but you'd need people to be able to go! Honestly I tried for about a year off and on as well!

Is the price listed in the menu for the 13 course meal a per person price?

Yes the current price of $310 (as of June 2023) is per person. That applies to the both the modern kaiseki and the vegetarian menu.

Will my friend Ernesto enjoy this place?

Probably. Ernesto is a pretty cool dude.

What is the price per guest?

As of June 2023, the current price per person is $310 not including tax tip or drinks

    What's the corkage policy?

As of June 2023, the current corkage policy is $85 per 750ml bottle with a limit of 1 bottle for every 2 people

Hi, on your website it says Sunday 9/26 10am to book reservation. I went to your website exactly at 10am and all reservations are all sold out. I can only put down on the waiting list for 9:30 10/8. Is this normal?

It sells out fast. I got a reservation by trying right at 10am.

Realistically, would it be possible to bring our 4.5 year old? How would the pricing work?

Website says that you can bring young kids, but they don't accommodate with a kids menu or something

I have a reservation for two persons, next Friday, Jan 24, 9pm. One modern Kaiseki, one vegetarian tasting. Please pm. We can't make it...anyone want it? Thanks?

    How many? DM me please

    How much is valet?

I feel like it was $7.50 or $8.50. We found easy and close street parking for free. ;)

    Is the restaurant wheelchair friendly?

They have an ADA approved parking lot for valet but I remember there being stairs at the front entrance. You'll probably need special accommodations

Can the vegetarian tasting menu be done vegan?

    No it can not.

How much does it cost per person including tax and gratuity?

Depends on if you have your meal with sake pairing and how generous you want to tip. Average meal with sake pairing with tax and tip is between $300 to $350 per person.

Can anyone suggest the easiest & fastest way to get a reservation please?

The best way is to make an account on Resy with your credit card info first. Reservations are available every Sunday at exactly 10AM. I suggest logging into your account beforehand.

Would it be possible to order a no-shellfish course?

Absolutely! Niki and her team are extremely attentive to their guests needs and details. If you have an allergy or simply don't enjoy a particular type of food then just let them know if the reservation email and they will definitely accommodate.

Do they have bar area to only get cocktails and experience the ambience?

No this is a reserved seated dining experience with a specific time slot. Not a lounge at all. There's about 10 tables and you must put a card down in order to make a reservation. Truth be told, there isn't much ambiance it's more about the food,… Read more

This second time, I wanted to bring my husband and see what his thoughts were. This restaurant doesn't take reservations, so we took our chances and visited on a Friday night. We got seated in maybe 5-10 minutes, so...not too bad. Pretty decent casual date night spot. The restaurant itself was pretty busy, but it was warm and welcoming. The table was a bit wobbly, but not something that bothered us. I ordered the signature ramen, and my husband ordered the OKG ramen. We had sides of edamame and the corn wings, and I also ordered the wagyu uni sashimi. Everything was delish! My husband mentioned that he thought his ramen was a bit too salty, and I have to agree that the flavor of the broth is pretty rich. The only complaint is that the service was a bit slow. Perhaps a bit understaffed? It looked like the servers were pretty busy, but they weren't as attentive, and we needed to flag them down. Overall, though, I really like the ramen here, and I will likely come back again.

No reservations but worth a wait (but honestly, only ever had to wait 30-40 mins during peak dinner time on Friday once). It's a small space but it doesn't feel crammed, it's cozy and really well kept. The quality and freshness of the fish is impossible to beat. The nigiri melts in your mouth. The best part of coming to dinner here is their prefix meal options. When my boyfriend and I come together we never have to strategize what to get. I always order the Uzumaki & he gets the Uzumaki Plus prefix meals & we each get a miso soup. The ceviche sampler leaves you wanting more each time, the edamame starter is the perfect size, and with each bite of the nigiri I'm smiling and nodding my head in disbelief. You get to choose between two cut rolls with the Uzumaki prefix meals, either the crunchy shrimp or spicy tuna -- the shrimp is my favorite. We decided to try the chocolate donut with vanilla ice cream today and it did not disappoint. Now to the service -- we've never had better service. Each employee greets you with a smile, and as soon as your plate is empty or a piece of trash shows up on your table the staff immediately takes it away. I personally love eating the pickled ginger and some places can be stingy, not this place! Immediately they are bringing us more ginger, water, etc whatever it is, without us asking. It's incredible the attention to detail the staff has and they make coming back such a warm and friendly experience. The cherry on top? There's free parking in a structure attached to the building. We recommend parking in the structure over the street as sometimes there can be interesting characters outside. You know it's an amazing restaurant when you can't decide which is better, the service or the food! Go, you won't regret it!!!

Originally we were going for the set menu, but the nigiri menu had so much that we were interested in. All of them were totally worth it, so I'll put stars for those that went above and beyond and surprised me in a delightful way. Here's our selects, ranked favorite first. ***Amberjack belly - this was my personal fav. It was thick, umami on instant bite where I could taste that it was coming from the fish itself. So delicious. **Seared toro (+truffle soy) - obviously. Super tender, seared perfectly, and truffle is a perfect match for the butteryness MP was $22. Wish it was a bit thicker, cause I've had it thick at a different omakase and it was unbeatable. It would be worth the extra! ***Seared Gindara - they had sashimi of black cod! It's one of my favorites grilled and loved that I got to try it as a raw nigiri. Flavoring was perfect and having it seared was a nice touch. **Seared salmon belly (+truffle soy) - like the toro, it's buttery and goes great with the truffle pairing. It's super soft and tender. Wish it was a bit thicker on this piece too! *Special Albacore - flavoring was with olive oil. Unique and paired well!! I was lowkey sad when they took the plate away so fast bc any basic roll dipped in olive oil + ponzu tasted so much better haha. Butterfish (daily special) - super soft & tender *Spicy yellowtail hand roll - seems like their spicy rolls are popular! Loved that it had right amount of spiciness, sesame, and not too salty. Tekka salmon hand roll & Salmon & Avocado roll - my bear friend loves his salmon, they're simple and clean, and have a good amount of salmon We also had banana tofu donut with pistachio ice cream! I've always wanted to try healthier Ring baked fonuts made from tofu and I'm glad I got to try it! Soft, just enough sweet. But pistachio ice cream was too icy. Service was super kind and fast. I appreciated that she suggested great recommendations (gindara and butterfish) based on what we liked! We really appreciated that as I'm glad to have tried them.

At Gokigen Tori, a yakitori concept originating from Tokyo, the team has opened a Culver City…read morebranch with their original chef brought over from Japan, delivering a truly authentic Tokyo yakitori experience in the U.S. The meal begins with a striking presentation: a wooden crate of assorted skewers for the omakase, ranging from all kinds of chicken cuts to richly marbled A5 wagyu. It immediately sets the tone for a meal rooted in traditional technique, yet open to a more modern, elevated interpretation. Yakitori here follows a philosophy deeply embedded in Tokyo's top counters, full utilization of the bird, precise binchotan grilling, and a deliberate pacing that emphasizes progression. Within this framework, I explored a more contemporary pairing approach. Elite "Cult" wines into a setting traditionally dominated by beer, sake, and shochu A bottle of Chateau Petrus kicks off the early progression. Its plush plum fruit and silky tannins align with the smoky depth of the grill, particularly alongside lightly charred chicken skewers where restraint in seasoning allows the wine elegance to surface. My approach tonight reflects a growing high end dining trend seen across Tokyo's top yakitori-ya, where prestigious Bordeaux and Napa cult wines are increasingly paired with yakitori. Bringing that perspective to Culver City, the contrast becomes intentional, humble, fire driven cuisine meeting some of the world's most coveted bottles. As the meal progress, the pairing shifts into a high gear, Screaming Eagle alongside Petrus elevates the wagyu into something far beyond traditional yakitori. Both wines concentration and structure cut cleanly through the beef's rendered fat, creating a powerful interplay between richness and precision. Even beef tendon, often seen as a more rustic skewer, takes on a refined dimension here. Against the backdrop of these world class wines, its savory glaze and charcoal kissed exterior provide a compelling contrast to the wines depth and smooth textures. Coming up next are the sake, Fudoh Junmai Daiginjo offers a composed, textural counterpoint. Its rounded umami and gentle fruit sweetness integrate seamlessly with tare-glazed skewers, while a clean finish resets the palate between richer bites and the Tenko 40 Muroka Nama introduces a more expressive, energetic layer. Paired with chawanmushi, sashimi, and lighter preparations, its fresh aromatics and subtle acidity bring lift and contrast, expanding the range of the meal beyond what wine alone could achieve. What I am experimenting here tonight are full of contrast, charcoal and silk, fat and structure, tradition and reinterpretation. Pairing wines like Petrus with yakitori may seem unconventional to a lot of you, but within the context of modern Tokyo dining, it feels increasingly natural. Here in Los Angeles, Gokigen Tori captures a glimpse of that evolution, where even the most traditional skewers meet the world's most prestigious glass. As always, I'll let the photos speak for the rest of the fun.

The yakitori is the best I've tasted in LA so far. It is also the most expensive. I've been to Saijo (not bad but more American palette), Nanbankan (disgusting), and Kappo Miyabi (acceptable). The chicken here tasted so tender and fresh and I could tell the ingredients were top quality. There were some very authentic daily specials on the menu like Sakuradai sashimi, Japanese Spanish mackerel, and firefly squid. Usually the firefly squid I've had were marinated and preserved with a funk to them but these were very fresh! I love that they get fresh fish flown in Japan and the sashimi was cut pretty well, too and served at the right temperature. Nothing worse than veiny hard cold fish. We also ordered the chicken soup and the minced chicken stone pot rice. I don't think the rice was worth it because the wait was too long and didn't have the right texture imo, too soft. The chicken soup was super basic, just meat and broth but wow SO delicious and comforting! The best chicken soup I've ever had. Apps were good, too. I love they had authentic feeling Japanese pickles. The mentaiko however was too salty. Menu said there would be otoshi (cover charge cabbage salad) just like in Japan for $5 but they didn't serve it. Probably because people didn't like the idea you have to opt out since this isn't a thing in America. I appreciated the thought. It adds to the authenticity of the restaurant and brought a bit of nostalgia. I also ordered a glass of sake and the waitress told me to say when to stop but I did not understand stand her and said nothing. She poured until the cup and the box underneath overflowed! Ended up with 3 glasses full. Didn't mean to be shameless but appreciated the authentic generous Japanese hospitality for sure. They have a great sake selection too, many easy izakaya style drinkers such as one of my favorites, Dewazakura Izumi Judan "Tenth Degree". You won't find this sake at fakey fake fusion Japanese places. The only thing I did not like about the restaurant was the wait staff was weird. They were mostly Eastern European women with blonde hair (all working at an authentic Japanese restaurant???) and it was hard to understand our waitress because of her accent. She also had a perpetual frown on her face. She seemed angry to serve us. Not sure what was up with that. I don't really knock any stars off for service though unless it's egregiously bad or non-existent. I would reserve the chef's counter next time to just interact with the chefs as they are definitely Japanese. Update: It was so good, I went back again! I have to say the food that comes out of the back kitchen is better than the yakitori. Presentation and knife skills are top notch. The mini tori chicken ramen is the top 3 I've every had in my life. The broth was so flavorful but light. The noodles were the right texture and the toppings were cooked PERFECTLY. I highly recommend their soups and daily specials! (Ask for the chalk board).

No debate, no hesitation. Just ramen. I had tried this spot at another location before and remembered liking it, so it felt like a safe, comforting choice for a long overdue catch-up. We got there at that in-between hour... not quite lunch, not quite dinner. The kind of time where the restaurant feels like it's just exhaling. It was completely empty except for us, which honestly made everything feel a little more intimate--like the space was ours for the afternoon. We sat down and immediately slipped into conversation, picking up right where we left off after graduation. Life updates, little wins, quiet struggles... the kind of conversation that only comes easy with people who've known you for years. And in between all that, our mouths were busy. The ramen came out hot, comforting, and exactly what we needed. Rich broth, satisfying noodles--one of those meals where you don't even realize how hungry you were until you take the first bite. We kept pausing mid-sentence just to take another bite, then laughing because we couldn't decide what deserved more attention: the food or the conversation. Service was really attentive without being intrusive. They somehow knew when to check in and when to let us just exist in our little bubble. The music was soft, not overpowering, so we never had to raise our voices or repeat ourselves--something I appreciate more and more these days. We stayed longer than we probably planned, but it didn't feel rushed at all. Just two old friends, warm bowls of ramen, and a space that let us slow down for a bit. Definitely one of those simple meals that turns into a really good memory.

I tried some karaage to start. It was two delicious hunks of meat, with a thick and crunchy shell containing a juicy and flavorful interior. It's also kind of hard to mess up fried chicken. For the main deal, I opted for the yuzu shoyu ramen. The bowl is put-together aesthetically, and it has flavorful components. I just couldn't get over this weird sensation coming from the yuzu. Perhaps I've grown too accustomed to rich and savory tonkotsu ramens... Afuri is clear about what it does and it definitely achieves its goal. Whether you'll like it or not is up to you. Nonetheless, I'm glad I tried it.
