Nestled above the heart of Chinatown -- in what could be an artist's charming top floor studio loft -- is My Thai Vegan Café, a modern veg take on traditional Thai dishes that feature an impressive array of shredded veggies and mock meats tossed into a wok. Here are some important distinctions to know for my fellow veg foodies: If you are the type of vegetarian who generally avoids Thai food because of the sneaking suspicion every dish has fish sauce, then this place is truly paradise. However, for people used to eating Thai food, it should be noted that this is not an authentic Thai eatery -- it is Vietnamese-owned with a Chinese staff, and I find that most of the dishes have a more traditional Vietnamese palate. I am writing this as a person who's consumed a lot of Thai food and couldn't help but make comparisons. The "fish sauce" is a combination of vinegar, chili sauce, and sugar--it works as a substitute and is generally offered as a side to garnish your main entrees, but those who eat Thai regularly will notice a subtle difference lacking in the pungent umami realm. The mock meats are either made with textured soy (chicken and beef), vital wheat gluten, or konjac root starch (same as shirataki noodles) for mock shrimp, which can have a gummy texture. For newcomers, the curries come highly recommended by staff, especially the mango yellow curry or pumpkin curry. Most tables also order the fried wonton appetizers and summer rolls. The wok noodles are a classic, but lack the same savoriness as traditional Thai eateries, I'd recommend the Pad Woon Sen plus, which comes with an assortment of mock shrimp, beef, tofu and chicken for just $1 more. I also tried the Tom Kha, which had a smooth coconut broth, but lacked herbal kick and tasted like it was missing the deep steep of lemongrass and galang root -- adding lime juice gave it a nice brightness and burst of flavor. Lots of reviews also recommend the birds nest, which is a fried nest of shredded taro with vegetables and protein inside. Do not order the Tom Yum, maybe it was an off day but the soup was a sodium bomb and couldn't be consumed. The restaurant is located up two flights of stairs in what feels like an intimidating, gritty stairwell tagged with graffiti. The space itself is warm and inviting though, decorated with lots of plants and string lights. The staff is friendly and attentive upon walking in and taking your order but then leaves you to enjoy your meal after serving. The dishes come in hot, large portions and every entree is plenty for two moderately hungry people. The pricing is fair, with most dishes between $15-25. I recommend going with a group and getting several items to share.

It's hard to put into words the emotion and passion I feel when I think of My Thai. Here is where I have enjoyed many of life's simplest pleasures with the love of my life. But if I had to choose a second love, it would be My Thai Vegan Cafe (MTVC). You will enjoy the most delectable vegan duck, pad see ew drowned in the most delicious of sauces, and the crunchiest of papaya salads. It's a mom and pop shop, and it always delivers. Come on a rainy day for the best experience. New menus are a huge addition. Can't recommend this place enough.

Pad see ew with tofu

My friend and I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived around 1:15pm, and there were plenty of tables available. We shared the pad see ew with tofu and the ton yum tow hoo, which was a stir-fry with tofu and mixed vegetables. We liked both dishes, but the pad see ew was my favorite. Service was decent, but it was difficult to get the waitstaff's attention at the end (despite it not being that busy) and we had to ask. Overall though, a great meal!

This is one of the few completely vegan restaurants in Boston and I've always had such an amazing experience every time I come here! I came with my family on a busy evening where I could tell they were a bit overwhelmed. There was still ample seating available, as the restaurant is quite large. The seating is very comfortable with a lovely ambiance. The service was very friendly, helpful and prompt. We ordered a large variety of items, starting with the tom yum soup, tom ka soup, the tofu cigars, mango curry, pineapple fried rice, and the nest. I loved every single dish we got and the spice level was perfection. The crispy bird's nest was such a standout with the savory stew inside. I also really love the mango curry "chicken" for having a lovely contrast of being sweet and tangy. The veggies were also so soft and juicy. The cigars were a unique dish as well and I enjoyed the crispy outside and soft exterior. I also go the honeydew boba tea without the boba. I liked how it wasn't overly sweet and was creamy and refreshing. It was very easy to get to with close proximity to the T. I cannot wait to return again on my next visit to Boston!

I love this hidden gem in Chinatown. The entrance is a bit interesting bc it's a dingy flight of stairs to the cafe. But the cafe is super clean and big. It is filled with a lot of plants and very cozy. I got the Tom yum soup and Thai iced tea which is almost a slushy. Everything was super yummy and can't wait to come back here again.

Omg, vegan Thai food? So hard to come by even vegetarian Thai food. This place is awesome. They are serving up comforting vegan renditions of classics like pad see ew and much more. The papaya salad and the summer rolls were nice lighter options. The tofu added to the papaya salad was excellent.

My Thai Vegan cafe is in Chinatown, Boston. The restaurant is on the second floor and has two sets of stairs you must ascend. Little narrow and steep but not bad. Just to let people know who may have trouble going up stairs. The interior has some plants by the windows. I think it was the husband and wife there in the late evening. There was only one other table that had patrons, so I was seated promptly, given my water, and the menu. The menu is all vegan and features an unbelievable huge menu. A lot of vegan meat dish options. I personally like that the menu is all plant-based, but when the menu is that large- chance is that there's a couple common bases with some modifications to create new dishes. My pad Thai was rather plain looking but tasted nice. The spices helped. Started off with the fried wontons, which were fine as well. I think that the strengths are that the place is entirely plant based, and there's no danger of having fish sauce or something that could make a seemingly vegetarian dish at a regular restaurant not so vegetarian. The food is fine, but it's honestly not wow. There were blogs that do recommend this place, and it's a good option for plant-based people in Chinatown area. But if I gave it a rating, I would give it a 3.9-4/5. Good, but not great. The total with the appetizer and the dish was $23.00 I did tip extra to show my appreciation. Out of 10, it's a solid 8.

Another incredible dining experience at My Thai Vegan, they are the highlight of our trip every time we go. We brought along some omnivores this time who did backflips upon tasting how incredible their food was.

We arrived just as the restaurant was opening and were surprised to see how busy it already was at 7:00 a.m.! The café had a charming, distinctly French atmosphere, reminiscent of cafés we've visited in France, right down to hearing patrons chatting in French. It certainly added to the ambiance! Since we arrived early, we were seated immediately at a cute window table, perfect for watching the city come to life. Over the next few days, we walked past several times and noticed people lining up for tables, so we were especially glad we had beaten the crowds. The service was excellent from start to finish. Our waiter was attentive and efficient, bringing water promptly, taking our order quickly, and delivering our food in what felt like no time at all. We ordered lattes, French toast, and a Croque Madame. The French toast came topped with fresh blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and banana slices. While it was a satisfying breakfast, the dish itself was fairly ordinary. I would have preferred brioche-style French toast for a richer texture, and the maple syrup was already poured over the top. Having it served on the side would have been a nice touch, allowing guests to control the amount. I also wasn't entirely sure the syrup was pure maple syrup. The Croque Madame was enjoyable as well, though neither dish was particularly memorable. Overall, Café Bonjour is a great spot for its convenient location, charming French café atmosphere, and friendly, efficient service. While the food was good enough for breakfast, it wasn't necessarily the highlight of our visit. I would come back again to try their pastries, or crêpes. I'd recommend arriving early to avoid the lines and enjoy a relaxed start to your day exploring Boston!

I thought it was a bit odd that they were taking reservations but did it anyway in case it was crazy. I'm very glad I did because even with a reservation before 9am some people were waiting outside for a table! We got seated right away with our reservation which I was very happy to have made. The place is very cool inside with interesting decor to look at. One of the reason I picked this restaurant is that they have gluten free options. It was great to be able to have a regular breakfast like anyone else. I had pancakes with potatoes, eggs and sausage. The sausage was pretty nice. The rest of my group liked their food too and the ambiance. Good spot but if you can, get a reservation!

I came here to eat after hearing some recommendations and decided to try the Irish Benedict…read more Honestly, I could have done without it. The corned beef tasted like it had been boiled in water with maybe a little salt and pepper. There just wasn't much flavor, and it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. They also had a mimosa special and a specialty drink flight, including a seasonal flight. One of the drinks in the flight contained milk, and I explained to the bartender that I couldn't drink milk. I asked if I could substitute another drink or even get a double of one of the other drinks in the flight. Unfortunately, the bartender refused to accommodate either request. I found that disappointing, especially since the drink I couldn't consume would essentially go to waste anyway. A heads-up about the waitlist: You can join online or in person, but be mindful that if you join online and receive a notification that your table is ready, you need to be there promptly. Our notification said the table was ready, but by the time we arrived, the restaurant was showing as closed and wasn't accepting any more walk-up waitlist reservations. That was a little confusing and frustrating. The atmosphere is eclectic, fun, and visually appealing, so I can see why people are drawn to the place. However, between the food, drinks, and service experience, I honestly felt it was a bit overhyped. Maybe I caught them on an off day, but based on my experience, the food and drinks just didn't live up to the expectations. Unfortunately, I left underwhelmed.

Last time I walked in and was told…read morethere would be a two-hour wait, but this time I made a reservation and finally got to enjoy a delicious meal! Tiropita Rolls: Very straightforwardly delicious. The bread was warm, soft, and airy, with a rich aroma of butter and cheese; the spread was a rich blend of honey butter, and olives, sweet and delicious, perfect as an appetizer. Tzatziki: A slight disappointment. The cucumber and Greek yogurt spread was surprisingly heavy, a bit cloying, and the pickled kumquats weren't as sweet as I expected, but rather had a slightly bitter taste. The pita bread was thick and soft, probably better suited for dipping in soup--like Bourdeto--than for the spread. Bourdeto: The tomato fish soup was a pleasant surprise. The freshly caught grouper of the day was thick and tender, lightly seared to create a crispy crust. The broth was a vibrant, tangy tomato base, with onions, fennels, and red peppers contributing a sweet, layered flavor. Trahanas, fermented wheat and dairy, added richness and a smooth texture to the soup. The broth also had a slight spiciness, making it incredibly comforting on a chilly autumn day. Portokalopita: The dessert that elevated the entire meal. A traditional Greek orange phyllo, the cake, made from crumbs of phyllo pastry, becomes incredibly soft and moist after being soaked in orange syrup. Every bite was bursting with rich orange sweetness and fragrance, followed by a slightly bitter orange zest--perfectly balanced. Paired with Manouri cheese ice cream, the creamy flavor was incredibly rich and creamy, creating a harmonious and layered flavor profile.
