July 15th was Lemon Meringue Pie Day and I stopped by hoping they'd have a slice for me to enjoy. Unfortunately, they did not have one made for the special occasion. We shared a laugh, that there are holidays celebrating food. Since I was ready here, I went ahead and enjoyed a lunch. I ordered the MJD Turkey Club. It was a typical club sandwich, but their mayo/aioli had some extra flavor to it. The bread was toast to a light golden color and had a slight crunch when you bit into it. Tomatoes were summer fresh and the bacon was crispy, so it made for a delightful lunch. My beverage of choice was an iced tea. They offered Sweet and Raspberry, but I took plain. I was impressed that at the table, they offered all four of the artificial sugars. As I can it, a Rainbow of Sweetness. The service is down home friendly. The couple who owns it, go the extra mile to make sure everyone is taken care of and is satisfied with their experience. I'll definitely be back. I gave them a heads up, July 20th is Chocolate Pecan Pie Day. That's my favorite, so I'll be coming back for a slice. read more

Stopped by this cute little shop on Broadway because we were craving something sweet. Very welcoming with a nice size dining room for the space. Servers were very friendly. My husband ordered the carrot cake and I ordered the Tollhouse. Is it a cookie bar or a pie or both? I'm not sure but it was absolutely delicious. My husband also loved the carrot cake. We both got some piping hot coffee which was perfect on a cold winters day. They also serve lunch. So, we plan to be back to try out the lunch menu next time we are in the Alton area. read more

The restaurant has a nice, eclectic atmosphere with a great vibe and charming décor. Our group was fairly large--ten people in total--which made the experience a bit more challenging from the start. There was some initial confusion about how to order. It wasn't immediately clear where the menus were located or what the ordering process entailed. After some time, we realized that the menu was written on a chalkboard and that a server would come to take our order. However, it seemed like most other patrons had ordered at the counter before sitting down, though we weren't entirely sure if that was the standard process. When the food arrived, most of it was lukewarm, particularly the soups. While the flavors were good, the temperature was disappointing, especially since nearly everyone in our group had ordered soup with the expectation of warming up after our short hike. Unfortunately, that expectation wasn't met. Also, the croissant on my mini tuna was hard which is unexpected for that type of bragging. We all ordered dessert which was hotter than the lunch meal. Nothing spectacular but good nevertheless. The staff was friendly but appeared just as uncertain about the ordering process as we were. We arrived around 12pm and sat down when we got there there were 3 other tables all had there food, we sat there for 20 mins no one came to take our food order we got up and went to the counter to order. A few tables of people came in after us and the server went to the table to take there orders and they received there food before us (we ordered two sandwiches, a soup and 2 drinks) very basic meals. It was very loud In there and the only time the server came to our table was to drop our food off he forgot our soup and when we asked for it he rolled his eyes and walked away. We were there for an hour before we received our food mine was a hot ham and cheese and my sisters was a turkey club my sandwich was not hot it was on the colder side and the bread was toasted however it felt like it had cooled and they warmed it up. The soup was hot however I had to go up to the counter to ask for a refill and handed my glass over and they never returned with it. We paid for our meals again 2 sandwich's a soup and 2 drinks came out to $45 dollars outrageous for the amount of time we waited and for what we ordered. Will not be returning. read more

This lil family owned business has been through it. The original owner sold it to her chef years ago. While vacationing in Jamaica a few years back, the owner was in a fatal accident. Her family took over the business and has kept one of Alton's best lunch spots open. My kids grew up having lunch here with their late grandmother, so every time I walk through the door and see familiar faces, and smell the delicious food, it reminds me of her. However, I purchased an expensive non-food item and the cashier automatically put a tip on the item and when I questioned this amount, she acted like nothing happened, no acknowledgement , no apology. I asked to cancel the transaction and redo without the extra tip. I will never return. read more

Very sad to say that this was a fail for me. I popped in hoping to get dessert to go as I had ordered lunch elsewhere and was bringing it to have with a friend. I'd had this place on my bookmarks for awhile and was so eager to try them out! I walked in, the restaurant was about half full but there was a couple waiting ahead of me. Multiple employees walked by multiple times and did not speak to me or the couple... odd.... A few minutes go by - an employee comes out from the back (same employee that had walked by multiple times) and says to the couple "we need to get caught up with our customers then someone will be back". Okay... A few more minutes go by, same employee comes out and is wiping info off the chalkboard on the wall. The couple notices and asks if they still have desserts left. I didn't even realize there was a possibility they would run out... The employee says yes they only have bread pudding left. The couple ahead of me left and so did I because well... I don't like bread pudding :( I can understand that if they make the desserts daily they may run out, that makes sense. The disappointment is from the lack of service and courtesy when they did speak to the couple (no-one ever even acknowledged or spoke to me). Some friends and I popped by for lunch a few weekends ago and it was great! We got there early and it started filling up fast. If you sit a little further back you'll get a lovely view of the river. I tried the Gomer (hot ham and cheese) and it was delicious. My friends tried the club & soup/salad - all good as well. Thankfully we all saved room for dessert ... and I got the Oreo pie. This is definitely a hidden gem that is a must go to! It is set in an old building with natural hardwood floors and a view of the river. Beautiful quilts are hung throughout and the restaurant is meticulously clean! The staff were constantly cleaning tables and keeping on top of everything. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was tender and flavorful. The Turkey Club was absolutely delicious with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. We had the Turtle Pie and Toll House Brownies for dessert which were both incredible. A table near us had carrot cake and it looked amazing too! Our service was also great! My family wanted to visit My Just Desserts for brunch at noon. We were seated at a nice table with a beautiful view of the river. There were a few items that had sold out, including the strawberry pie, but we made do. I was pleased with my turkey club and salad. The shrimps were plump and plentiful. The curry dressing really has no resemblance to Caesar dressing, but it was good. My mom enjoyed her ham sandwich and my sister liked her wrap and Toll House brownie. My aunt is a huge fan and strongly recommended the salad and was disappointed that the pie was out. But I'm sure she'll be back soon. read more

It is fall and I was craving a slice of apple pie, and My Just Desserts had just want I needed. I have no idea how many pies they make, but I got a slice of the apple praline with vanilla ice cream. I had a slice of apple, pecans and brown sugar in every bite. The crust was make to perfection and the balance of vanilla ice cream helped balance out the sweetness from the brown sugar. I'm torn an conflicted on how to review. If based on taste alone. Definitely 4, maybe even 5 stars. I got the caramel apple pie slice and the ozarkberry. Hit the spot, just what I was looking for. However, no slice of pie should cost $6 (5.99) that's a $48 pie!! Are you kidding?!?!?!?! Also got the famous chicken salad. And while it may be the best for for some, I don't like huge chunks of chicken, or green olives (!?!) In it. I don't even like celery, but that's at least normal. So it wasn't for me. Grand Reopening! "My Just Desserts" reopened today for outdoor dining, after the long shutdown directed by our benevolent and protective governor. (They also offer curbside pick-up.) They have set up tables in their parking lot (several parking spaces also remain), some in the shade of the building (still shady at 1 PM), and some under umbrellas. The weather could hardly have been more perfect for opening day, with temps in the upper 70's, a good breeze, and low humidity. The food was just as satisfying as ever. My wife had the daily special, the "Hawaiian Panini"; she said that it was very good. I had the signature chicken salad, and upgraded to the croissant (which makes the sandwich complete); it was excellent. (Note that it contains olives, which is what many feel makes it so good; however, I believe that they usually also offer it without the olives.) In addition, I had the broccoli cheese soup (one of two soups of the day), and it was very good. For dessert, we split the "Chocolate Yum Yum", which was outstanding. It had a surprisingly good nut crust on the bottom (I am not much of a nut eater, either), and layers of whipped cream, chocolate, and another ingredient that escapes me. It would not satisfy a chocoholic, but for those of us to whom chocolate is just another great flavor, it had the right mix of chocolate and other ingredients. The service was good, especially considering it was the first day, and the kinks were still being worked out. Yvonne, the owner (and I believe the main dessert creator, also), came by the tables and thanked everyone for coming by - a great personal touch, that means a lot to many of us. My all time favorite dessert place in the STL metro area!! Absolutely the best pies/cookies anywhere around STL: the chocolate cream pie, Mrs Ledbetters, peach pie and pecan are the best I have tried next to my own mother's. Very reasonable prices! This cute cafe/bakery with small, personalized service bring me back time after time. At this time I carry out anytime I venture over to adorable Alton for antiquing and Christmas shopping in their cute downtown, or for a drive on the great River road to Grafton. We both had the chicken salad and I don't know their recipe, but I want it! It had lots of chicken and celery added just the right amount of crunch. I had the pumpkin pie. Again, I don't know what they put in it but I want their recipe!! It was the best pumpkin pie I have ever had! The crust was also fabulous! I also got a taste of the bread pudding and it was DELICIOUS!!! The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars was it was a bit pricey. This 5 star review is for their special salad of the week (bacon, spinach, chicken) with probably the BEST dressing I have literally ever had - poppy seed vinaigrette. Peggy was our server and was fabulous. Super friendly, and brought our waters and large salad that we split in record time. She also mentioned the dressing was able to be purchased. Quite literally my only regret is not buying all the available dressings, because I can guarantee by the end of this week, the BFF and I will finish off the dressing. The strawberry pie was delicious! When I went over the summer I remember ordering the last piece and I felt bad for the next person in line who wanted it (not really)! I went with my friend to Alton one day and when we needed something for dessert she knew the perfect place and we ended up here. She ordered the mud pie and I had the strawberry pie. We sat in complete silence while we consumed our desserts. They were both heavenly and with the water to wash it down I was quite content.
