Picturesque historic building in a small village. Long family history as well. The interior was a bit shabby and probably hadn't been updated for 45 years. The chairs were uncomfortable. Then the food came....canned green beans and canned corn. First batch of sausage was well cooked when our large party asked for more sausages they weren't well cooked or browned. As if this was rushed. They didn't seem to expect to fulfill the commitment of "All you can eat." The rolls were stodgy and bland. Fried chicken and roast beef were okay. Chicken and dumplings had no chicken in it and not much flavor. For goodness sake how much does celery cost? The coleslaw was very good. Our group had called for information and was not told that tip was not included in the set price. The tip was set at 20% for family style. It was Saturday night and when we left at 6:45 the dining room we were in was empty except for our group. The bar was busy but there was a wedding across the street in the American Legion. Getting here is the best part. Take a ferry and enjoy the ride! The views around this area are spectacular. The people working here are great! The best part of their dinner are the starters that come with the meal. The sausage is terrific! So is the slaw and the corn relish. My wife loves the beets. But the chicken, which used to be pretty good, is nearly inedible. They obviously fry it in advance and it sits around and gets hard and cold before they serve it to you. The potatoes taste fake. Out for a fall adventure, we took Brussels ferry from Grafton. We ate at the Wittmond Hotel. We were seated promptly. There is seating throughout in different rooms. Food started with pork sausage, rolls and relish tray. Then main course family style with fried chicken, roast beef, dumplings and sides. We also had dessert which was extra but it was very good. It was $58 for two people for dinner, drinks(tea and soda) and shared a piece of pie with ice cream. Atmosphere was nice. You felt like you were taking a step back in time. This is an AMAZING place! I'm not usually a fan of all you can eat type restaurants, but this one is well worth the visit! Such a great variety of foods! The service is VERY good, with just the right amount of checking back with each table, without being intrusive. The building is also worth seeing, quite historic. The lunch experience at Wittmond Hotel at Brussels IL is an unforgettable experience and an adventure for me. Wittmond Hotel is still kept the same look as 1847 when it was first opened for business. The owner, being the 6th generation of the Wittmond family kept all the original decor, antique and traditions back in the days. All-you-can-eat freshly homemade meal are served at their dining room at an affordable price of $20+tax and tips. All the ingredients were home grown at their nearby farms. The dining room was packed with customers upon our visit. Advanced reservations are recommended. To get to Wittmond Hotel from St Louis, we needed to take the Golden Eagle ferry from St Charles, went through the rolling hills before arriving. The commute from Chesterfield is about 30-40 mins. It's well worth it. Out of their entire menu with 8 starters, 2 main courses and 3 sides, here are my favorites: * Their home made pork sausage is the bomb. It's best to go with their homemade apple sauce. * I can't stop snacking on their cole slaw. It is very fresh and has the right acidity. * Love their corn relish and their mash potato & gravy as well. As far as desserts, I decided to try their blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice-cream on top. It's so good. Our friends tried the cheesecake with fresh strawberries. They can't stop raving about it too. In conclusion, Wittmond Hotel is a great spot for a gathering with friends and family a hearty nice brunch. Drove up to the Golden Eagle Ferry from St Charles, MO to have a birthday lunch with my best friend's family at this quaint little place. I arrived early and the owner gave me a little tour/history lesson after I asked if there were any books for sale about the history of the hotel. She told me it had been a boarding house and was owned by the same family for 6 generations I believe. All the previous owners picture's cover the walls. The old mercantile is located between the bar and the restaurant and holds antiques and collections from the past. Food is $20/person and is a fixed menu all-you-can-eat meal (fried chicken, beef is extra, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, coleslaw, beets, pickles, apple sauce, boiled sausage, rolls with butter) served family style. No to-go boxes are allowed. Drinks and dessert is extra. Cash or check only. Nice Sunday drive through the orchards and a ride on the ferry made the day. read more

Half the enjoyment of a supper at Wittmond's is getting there. Take either the Brussels Ferry from Grafton or the Golden Eagle Ferry from MO, or make a day of it by making a loop and using them both. As the hotel has been open since 1849 it's a step back in time. You enter through the cozy bar and into the museum that was the general store. Once you are seated the only decisions are what you want to drink and if you want chicken or chicken and beef, go with the beef! The Cole slaw and apple sauce are homemade and a good way to start the meal, then comes the relish tray- cold corn salad, beets, pickle chips, and the peach preserves. The peach preserves are excellent and go great on the dinner rolls. When the main course comes, you get fried chicken, shredded roast beef, gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, green beans and our favorite the kluski type noodles in chicken gravy! They'll refill whatever you need all for $20 per adult and about $10 for kids. A bargain given todays inflation. Take the trip! read more

Which also leads to no menus... which leads to no prices... just shock when you get the bill. Our bill was $97 for 3 adults, a 5 year old, and a 10 year old. This place is a traditional kind of place with family style serving and plenty of it. It's not fine dinning but more of a family style food well prepared. I had the fried chicken and it was moist and a good crust. The sides were very good and in the wheelhouse of German/American cooking. There seemed to be som buzz about the rolls but I found them to be very typical soft rolls and nothing special but other starters very great. It's out there a ways but on the weekend it can be a pleasant drive. The bar on weekends seems to be the place to be. Very good service too. Keep in mind cash only no Credit cards! read more

The Wittmond hotel is iconic. I went there as a kid with my parents. Very little has changed and the food is still fantastic family style Sunday supper. Very distinctive sausage starts the meal accompanied by corn relish that's really good, slaw and pickled beets. The sausage and corn relish steal the show. Next comes old fashioned style roast beef that falls apart when you touch it. It's addictive but don't give in because next comes excellent fried chicken with chicken and dumplings and mashed potatoes. Green beans and corn are the sides. Again, the entire meal is old fashioned country cooking. Sunday at my grandmothers comes to mind. The mashed potatoes were underwhelming but everything else was fantastic. The side dishes were good but not really hot kinda lukewarm. We ordered desserts to go, blackberry cobbler & pecan cobbler. The girls that served us were very pleasant and helpful. The entrees were all delicious-we finally decided we would only comment on the ones that weren't wonderful and our table fell silent! I've been going to this hotel restaurant for a few years and have to give them two thumbs up. The food is so straight forward, classic country kitchen fare yet so interesting and fun it's own right that it's worth putting on your lists of places to check out. First of all, the drive to get there is most enjoyable, the scenic drive is half the fun. You arrive at this old hotel eatables in 1847 in the small town of Brussels. The historical decor adds greatly to the experience of a throwback to times past. There isn't a menu, you are just seated and the food begins to arrive. You will start off with a crudités platter of sliced apples, pickled beets, corn relish, and an amazing peach preserves severed with homemade grilled sausages. Next comes the main course which seems to never end. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, coleslaw, dumplings, roast beef, apple sauce, chicken soup, and more. All served family style, and you can request refills on anything until you've had your fill. The food is not the best I've ever had, but I always enjoy it, the desserts are fantastic. She is a really fun bartender and will have you rolling laughing. If you are there with a group you have to get the Gin bucket to share. I highly recommend this country day trip that has become a favorite annual family Fall drive. Start along the Katy Trail, taking the Golden Eagle Ferry to Brussels for a meal at The Wittmond and a stop at Hagen Family Farm for a large, $1 Pumpkin. Then take the Brussels Ferry to Grafton for a ride down the Great River Road, a jaunt through Pere Marquette and Elsah to see history, eagles and the turning leaves. You really need to map this trip out since some of the country roads have no names. Definitely an adventure worth taking! About the Whittmond: The Whittmond Hotel was built in 1840. That's 173 years of history and while the functions of the front store have changed, much of it remains the same and it's still run by descendants of the Whittmond family. I go for the family style meal in the restaurant every year. It may not be perfect (some of the items aren't homemade and you can taste it), but the value ($13.50 - tax included), the relish tray (it's homemade), the chunky applesauce (made from apples from local orchards), the sausage (made fresh from a local farm and butcher), and the fried chicken (moist and crispy) are well worth it. Homemade or not, the rest of the items are hot and there is a ton of it. Okay, you are served with plastic cafeteria-esque table ware, and have to pay with cash or check (it's in the country, get over it - you're lucky if you get a cell phone signal here). And, the primary waitress may act a bit like the "Soup Nazi" as she YELLS her instructions and questions at you with awkward moments of no eye contact, but the whole flawed experience is worth repeated visits. Very close to 5 stars. Family style dinner is delicious, and a pretty good value ($65 including tip for 2 adults, 2 kids) considering the quality. The service was competent and friendly, and the venue is interesting for its history. The thing I'd recommend is that Wittmond's invests in a bill of fair with prices to post outside. We walked in expecting to see menus, and instead were immediately served a large relish plate. We had no idea of the pricing until we received our bill, and they only accept cash and check. All of that worked out for us, but I think it prevent some confusion for new, walk-in patrons like ourselves. We'll likely be back read more

Apparently our experience was much different than most. For a place that prides itself on 'real home cooking,' the food was really underwhelming. Everyone is right, the food is plenteous (with enough left uneaten on every table, there's either enormous food waste or some recycling going on). But the courses are strange--relish tray of pickled beets, candied apples, corn relish, dried out celery and carrots and peach preserves(?), along with cinnamon rolls, a broth-and-bits chicken noodle soup, apple sauce, sausage with a slightly strange texture, some pretty good German-style coleslaw and good dinner rolls. At that point, the unusual combination already wasn't sitting right. The main course seemed more harmonious, but not any better tasting. The fried chicken and roast beef were under-seasoned, green beans over seasoned, corn and egg noodles were fine. But this is the part that kills me--INSTANT MASHED POTATOES. Maybe it's different there, but in Texas, passing that off as home cooked is basically blasphemy. The blackberry cobbler was no less anti-traditional. I'm not sure how they make it, but I got about one bite of good, sweet crust with a nice crunch--the rest was like a raw pie crust. It was inedible for us. For as many beautifully maintained and updated historical homes, businesses and museums as there are in the area, this one also doesn't seem to hold a flame. It seems to have lost some charm in the updates. Anyway, I really wanted to like it--I like the idea of it, the ferry ride and drive out there are fun. Service was good.
