Two of the 4 potato pancakes I was served.

Drove up and didn't think they were open. Luckily they were. Really a quaint and unique place. Loved the ambiance and the music was great. The only thing I would criticize is that it took 20 minutes to get out my unsweet tea. Ordered the Jagerschnitzel with potato pancakes and sauerkraut. Also ordered the brat bites as an appetizer but was told they weren't serving appetizers. I was very disappointed until I saw the size of the meal that was set before me piping hot and fairly quick. I hadn't eaten all day in anticipation of this meal and I could only eat 3 of the potato pancakes, all but 4-5 bites of the schnitzel and almost all the sauerkraut. The price was VERY reasonable as well!! Will I go back??? Most definitely!!!

Interesting restaurant, but go more for the experience than the food. It is an old dance hall, bar and restaurant with a history of being a shopping stop over watering hole half-way between Waterloo, IL and the Mississippi River for the past 100 years. There's lots of antiques and Knick knacks jammed into the restaurant. Some are actually priced and for sale in the gift shop. Do not get in a hurry when you're eating here. Also do not get your heart set on a certain menu item as not all items are offered everyday. Dinners come with a basket of huge bread slices, trip to the soup and salad bar, and entree with sides. You can swap the sides. German and domestic beers are available. Food was just okay.

Cider!!!

If you want to shop for steins, go here. But the place is filthy, so eating here.... Maybe not. They had no specialty cocktails at all, didn't have 3 or more items on the menu, and couldn't get the register to take debit or credit cards. The food was good, but not worth all of the above. Had wanted to eat here for a loooong time, and it was a big disappointment.

Never open for dining in. Takeout only, and the owner can't guarantee that will happen in a timely fashion.

Smart move. Our server was nice and friendly, warmed up more after a bit. Wife and I had a few Estrella draws and the other couple had a flight and other beers. We shared an order of pretzel bites with cheese sauce and onion strings. Pretzel bites seemed like they were deep fried and salted. The beer cheese sauce was just ok. Onion strings were not much better but I kind of got hooked on the curry infused catsup. Different taste and not bad. We would definitely come back again, next time we're in town that is.

I will def. be returning! Started off w/ pretzel bites and cheese sauce. Nice and diff from the usual pretzel bites. Ordered the Wiener schnitzel sandwich and a hamburger but can't remember the name but it had beer battered onion rings on top. Everything is homemade, including the pickles! I'm not a drinker but they have enuf taps to hold up to 50 diff beers. Some were empty but still prolly over at least 40 to choose from. Service was impeccable and prompt. The only downside is their hours are vry limited during the week.

We arrived around 3:45 and the place was busy! There was one open seating area so we grabbed it quickly. We spent a few minutes looking at the menu and then the guys went up to the bar to get our drinks. There didn't seem to be table service. I don't know if they ever have it or not. We enjoyed hanging out there for a few drinks. It has a dark, moody, comfy feel. I tried to take pictures but it was pretty dark and they didn't turn out well. I had the "Yes We Have One" - it's an espresso martini. It wasn't as sweet as I prefer, but it was good and I had more than one so it couldn't have been too bad! The other three enjoyed their drinks as well. I'd definitely go back and have a few cocktails in a cozy little area!

After I had already done some damage at the gift shop, it was casually suggested that we could hang out in the adjacent area and walk around with our beers in hand. That sounded like a fine idea, so we went for it. I decided to try something a little different from my usual go-to and ordered a Goose Island Full Pocket Pilsner. It was exactly what I needed - cold, crisp, and refreshing, with just the right balance of flavor to make it memorable without being overpowering. We wandered around, soaking in the atmosphere and chatting, beer in hand, feeling relaxed and perfectly content. Once I finished my drink, the timing lined up perfectly. It was time to head in for the actual brewery tour, and I was already in a great mood. The whole experience felt seamless and well-paced, like everything had been designed to make guests feel welcome and unrushed. It was a great way to kick off the evening. It is very romantic and extremely picturesque. Make sure you check my review on the Winery to see the rest of the photos. The service and the food. This place, though it isn't indicated anywhere, stopped seating after lunchtime and took a break between 2 pm and 4 pm. They weren't kicking diners out, but also wouldn't seat anyone till 4. This is a bit of a shock for those just trying to get a late lunch and missed the 2 pm deadline by a few minutes. There is no other close option for snacks or something of the like. And unfortunately, the attitude was very much of a... "well, sorry that you weren't prepared!" We almost didn't return, but we wanted a specific item off the menu. And to rate this place! (Just dropped my rating to 3 stars from 4 as I think of this. When we did return in time for dinner, the same person who didn't recognize us at all cheerfully greeted and seated us. The waitress was very good and knew her stuff. Even so far as to suggest a specific wine with my dinner when asked. The food - This is the main thing that lost a star. It was OK. I chose the German Trio, thinking of getting a little of everything. And, I did. However, when it says smaller portions (see menu picture), they mean it! There was a smallish brat, an incredibly small and overcooked piece of schnitzel (pictured), and lastly some overcooked pork with a sauce all over it. I believe they get away with serving this kind of food for several reasons. a.) The sauce is amazing! And yes, it is on lots of the food or on the side as you wish. b.) The winery has a trolley that runs to it. So many visitors are "trapped" till it returns, so a place to eat makes sense. Also, the place's main concern is wine. The average customer is at least lightly sauced and will view this as the best meal ever because they are going to remember the sauce! Those of you who typically read my reviews often times know that I give each venue the benefit of a doubt and will go eat at them a few times to ensure it wasn't just a fluke. But not this time. I found nothing extremely redeeming other than the convenience of eating right after drinking a bunch of wine. This place touts itself as one of the premier, old school, and fancy restaurants in Hermann. It is not. Pick one of the others and have a better meal.

I enjoyed a mulled wine, salmon and potato cakes. The food was prepared well and was delicious. The caveat (there's always a caveat) is, be prepared to spend a lot of money on a meal that I've personally cooked for about a 5th of the price. However, as I was eating out because I didn't feel like cooking tonight, it was very close to being worth the expense. I also want to thank my waitress as she was very good.

What a great little place…read more We stopped in here to grab a bite to eat after the long drive to town. Dropped off our stuff at our Airbnb and headed straight here. The only negative I have is that I didn't have time to eat more of the food. And order more drinks. So, this one will be on the list for a return visit. But, I can hear you saying... "Rob, you only scored it 4 out of 5!" Well, that is because I can't do a half-star. So let me explain! The Food - Amazing Schnitzel with all the right sides. Katie got the salmon, again seasoned and cooked to perfection. They get all stars for the food! The Ambiance - This place, at one time, was a working mill and has all of that rustic charm. There are private rooms that are decked out in the downstairs of the place, and plenty of amazing thick-beamed rooms by the bar and main seating area. Lots of fun things outside when it isn't too cold. Again, all the stars! The Service - The person who seated us gave us a quick rundown on the local liquors and their general food. Then, just for grins, let us go take pictures downstairs and at parts of the bar. See attached. She also offered to go further, but we declined and headed to our table. Our waitress... well... she was efficient and friendly. She took our order correctly and delivered the food and check appropriately. And here is where the half-star gets lost. I asked, "Which do you think is better tonight? The Lobster Spätzle or the Schnitzel?" Katie said I looked at her like she had just melted onto the floor when she replied with. "I prefer the Schnitzel! But, I haven't ever had any spätzle." Wait?!?!?! You are working in a Germanesq restaurant, in a Historic German town, and are over the age of 45. Obviously have worked here for a while. And you don't know what one of the 6 dinner dishes, not a salad or a burger, tastes like?!?!?! I mean... I can understand if it was vegan or something like that... but she just told me that she likes the PORK Schnitzel! Owner/Manager... please make sure your peeps can answer the simple flavor questions. Another place was even able to tell me which wine they thought would go with my food... off the top of her head, and they had more on the menu. That said! All of you who get the chance to eat here should take it! I know when I make it back to Hermann, I will, and I'm sure they will get that last star!
