If you haven't been down town (near the square) lately, you'll be in for a massive shock when you go. The whole place is now swarming with activity, both day and night. One of the restaurants that's made its way to the area is the Mudhouse. It's actually a coffee house, but they do serve a small menu of salads, sandwiches and soups. The coffee is... okay. I actually feel the coffee is far too strong. I love good coffee, but when the place calls itself mudhouse, you should probably be prepared for a very acrid experience. They offer different coffees every day, and generally have 3 regular (with caffeine), and one decaf option. They also have tea. I've been to the Mudhouse many times now with a friend, and with its location, it's become a trendy place for students to come in and study. We've laughed a few times because so many people were plugging in their Apple laptops, they were overloading the wiring, and caused an overload. The store also sells a few sweets, including cookies and muffins, but I've only ever tried a cookie there once. The place is a tad pricey, so if you are going to go in for coffee, be sure to do so when you can spend a while, and purchase a bottomless cup. read more

It's 10pm you don't want ice cream but you want SOMETHING cold and sweet and delish. So you go to Mudhouse and get a frozen coffee drink. Enough said. You do at times have to listen to loud young Christians shouting excitedly about their latest Biblical escapades, but it's a small price to pay. That said, stay away from the regular coffee. Good coffee, yes, but a better vibe: the room's acoustics don't transmit conversations, so you can sit and read or write without hearing everything said by the people at the next table. The seating's comfy and plentiful, and the food's cheap and pretty healthy. Whenever I'm in town to visit my in-laws, this is where I go to escape. Highly recommended. read more

Nice coffee shop in downtown Springfield! Local roaster, using organic beans with different roasting characteristics. The menu is nice, as well, as they offer quiche, parfaits, bagels, etc. The best part....they are letting the customer drink their coffee OUT OF COFFEE MUGS!!!!!!!! So rare these days...... Got the curry chicken salad wrap -- which, as a side, came with a horrible bout of food poisoning that lasted the whole weekend. The food and drinks offered are always of great quality, the selection available has something for anyone, and the prices aren't outrageous! We stopped in after watching a nfl game at a nearby bar. We waiting for 10 minutes, placed our order and waiting for our drinks. The employee made the wrong drink and acted like it was my fault. She made a second, also wrong after a total of 20 minutes wait. I told her it was wrong again. We finally left with no drink and no refund. Honestly how hard is it to make one latte. I wanted to like this place but I wont be back. There is a reason I stop at Starbucks when I want a latte. The use their ears and dont blame the customer for their mistakes. read more

UPDATE: Been back to Mudhouse after a break. They moved the furniture around where there is seating by the window and more space in the back. It's so very lovely!!! It makes the whole space seem cozy and welcoming. It reminded me why so many people love this place. Also, their coffee tastes better than ever. ------------------- I've been going to Mudhouse for about four years now. It's a lovely place to read, journal, or catch up with friends. However, not the best place to study due to little natural lighting. However, they have lamps at each table. I would refer to Mudhouse as a café more than a coffee shop due to its extensive food menu and busy atmosphere. They have numerous options for vegetarians, vegans, and those who are gluten free. Also, bomb ass smoothies! The service is hit or miss. The baristas are sometimes friendly, sometimes quiet, and sometimes condescending. But most importantly, the coffee is great! They roast their beans right down the street. Mudhouse always have four pots out of different beans. I would highly recommend going in the mornings when they are less busy! read more

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a coffee fan, but I still have plenty of drink options at Springfield's original downtown coffeehouse. Along with coffee, hot tea, and chai, the Mudhouse also has a wide variety of smoothies (my favorite is a tie between the Berry Buzz and Jungle Boogie), sandwiches, soups, and baked treats. The atmosphere is quiet (unless it's First Friday) and laid back, pretty much what you'd expect from a good coffee shop. The Mudhouse continues to be one of the preferred downtown locations to meet up, whether that be for studying, business, or just idle chatter. I have been going to this place since i was sixteen, initially for the environment (trendy hip hang out for college students) but remained a loyal customer because of their unique roast. This is one of the best coffee shops to come and study at!!! To start off it has a very hipster vibe and is super chill which is perfect for doing homework. When I come I always get the peanut butter puddle but my friend had no idea what to order. The worker was very quick to offer suggestions and she finally ended up picking the jitterbug. It was not too sweet and I can contest that it was delicious. The coffee may be a little more expensive than the average Starbucks but you are paying for the quality and the atmosphere. This is such an iconic coffee place and while coffee may be at the center of their products their food and desserts are not to be ignored. The selections all seem so delectable and I ended up grabbing a VEGAN brownie. That's right they had a vegan brownie. All in all this place is amazing and I love every aspect of the coffee shop!!! Nice atmosphere. Great hours. I thought the prices were pretty good. First time on a Sunday morning I got a mudskipper. Hazelnut and chocolate lattee. It was delicious. The barista was super friendly and not snobby at all. The second time I visited after 10 pm. It was more busy. When I asked a question about the Monday free second shot of espresso, the barista acted like I was stupid for even asking. It was written on the specials board. I got a honey almond lattee. I love honey and almond and drink almond tea all the time but wow this was gross! That's probably just my personal preference and others may love it. I thought the almond flavor tasted scorched. I wouldn't get that again, but that's just me. My first experience was great and my second wasn't, but I still think it's a pretty neat coffee shop. read more

While the quality is good on my lattes and tea in the mornings when I've gone, over the last few years the consistency and quality has lacked any time that I get a drink in the afternoon or evening. They have some of the best pastries and vegan cookies though! So, my suggestion is to make sure you visit first thing in the morning and you will be fine. read more

Oh mudhouse. This is the hangout spot of my later-youth years. Loved to get sugary, frozen drinks at that time and now just cherish that the serve a lovely cup of joe (bottomless in house!). I love their coffee beans by the pound and the selection of blends. Though they roast their beans in town, the selection is sometimes scarce (haven't had a bad on yet though, so try a new one if your favorite isn't there). Great feel to the place, cozy couches to sit at, magazines to read, cool local art work on the walls. Good food too! Basic cafe fair with sammies, salads, and soups. Excellent options for sandwiches. Downsides: sometimes there's quite a young crowd (probably the major place for teens to hang out downtown) which can alter the atmosphere a fair bit. read more

They had quite the menu but I just wanted a coffee. 2$ even for a large cup of coffee. AMAZING. Compared to a stinky Starbucks or Peets Tea? Come on. 2$ gourmet coffee is awesome. I had the house brew and it was pretty bold even though it said medium roast. Nothing a little skim milk couldn't help out. Im definitely going back because the dude in front of me order some peanut butter ice drink I was jealous. Next time. The atmosphere is great and very roomy. However, for the coffee drinker the drinks are equal to and similar in taste to other coffee shops downtown. So glad I found this place. Charming. Spacious, friendly staff, muffins still hot and drip on demand in airpots; you can pour your own, pay the Honor Jar and jet if you need. But nice to stay. Had one espresso drink too, good one. Lots of interesting local art and clearly a stream of regulars. I enjoyed seeing a bit of historic downtown while trying Mudhouse. Mudhouse puts their own unique twist on your traditional coffee! Their "mudhouse" coffee is a blended iced coffee shake made with their cold brew and served up in a pint glass. And, boy, does it pack a punch! The regular coffee shop looks great as well, but I wanted to try something unique. The atmosphere is relaxed and with enough outlets to make it perfect for a few hours of studying. I can see how this place can become a great hangout spot in town! read more
