I've been going to Big Momma's for a long time. Lately, the service has been horrible. One day I waited for 15 minutes and never received the coffee I had ordered. The guy working had no clue what he was doing behind the counter. Then today I went in and the guy behind the counter completely ignored me. I waited and waited and he piddled around, doing nothing. He only said something when I walked out the door. I guess they don't want my business anymore. There are other shops so no biggie. read more

This is my first visit. The barista was very friendly and the latte was pretty darn good. I was welcomed by the regular patrons and had a lovely conversation with an 18 year regular. There's a back room with plenty of tables to work at or socialize. The general ambiance is warm and friendly. Parking out front is 2 hours but there's free all day parking a block away. read more

Love coming to Big Mommas! Great sandwiches, quick and delicious breakfasts and good drinks. The staff is also always helpful and friendly. I love the seasonal fall salted caramel apple cider. The Jacqueline is a standard go-to cold sandwich of mine, and the Chicken Chipotle panini is my absolute favorite warm sandwich in all of Springfield. Warm gooey cheese, fresh spinach, chicken and a great Chipotle sauce all in a crunchy panini. For breakfast, my favorite is the breakfast burrito, packed with eggs, sausage, potatoes, cheese, peppers, onions and tomatoes. And delicious salsa. It's a big messy burrito. But so good. You've been warned. I also really like the quiches. Can't go wrong with a quiche. Also a great place to pop-in, read a book, get some work done on your laptop or what have you. 5/5 stars. read more

Has the vibe of Downtown Grounds used to have in Houston. Old man behind the counter was a little short with us, but he checked himself. I was asking the cute lady with blonde and black hair, think 101 Dalmatians, about what coffee we should order. He rudely interjected. Now, most times I would say something along the lines of, "I was asking HER". I didn't want to cause her any problems though and he seemed like the petty type that would take it out on employees. I could be wrong. So when picking up our drinks, Mint Momma and Old 66, I asked her about "Havana Vieja" across the street. She recommended we try it, so we will tomorrow. Our coffees were superb. We had both ordered the "Daybreak" and this too was excellent. I will go back if I am still here this weekend. Everything would have been perfect if the old guy was more...tranquil. read more

I love big mommas. I love their lattes and their soups/sandwiches. They usually have new daily soups. I always get old 66 latte lol This place is a nice vibe. I noticed I come here when meeting with a friend. They've got more tables in the back. Good place for meetings, studying, or taking a break. Staff have always been friendly when I came. Reminds of a modest version Panera for the budget friendly. Great place to hang out for hours and enjoy the downtown crowd with a great drink in hand. Not sure I recommend the food, unless you hungry and Panera isn't near by. Staff are friendly and take extra time for everything. read more

I was blown away by the meal I enjoyed at lunch time today at Big Momma's! I ordered the special (only $8.00!), which consisted of a delicious grilled cheese (cheddar or provolone, I recommend cheddar) paired with an epically scrumptious butternut squash soup. The finishing touch for the soup: a dash of red pepper flakes that provided a sense of magic to the taste buds! Oh, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention the fabulous service I received from restaurant personnel Joe and Waverley! To top off my meal, I got a fantastic (and humongous!) sugar cookie, which I have provided a photo of below. Although the place is large in size, it's extremely dirty and when we were there it was Smokey... which I'm not sure why and I'm sure that's it's not like that all the time. This place is beyond awful and I honestly don't know how they are still in business. My husband and I have been to many coffee houses in Springfield and this place is the worst. We stopped in on Saturday afternoon and we both got frappes. My husband always gets decaf, I do not, they asked us four different times which drink was supposed to be decaf. As I was looking around the building while waiting quite awhile for our two drinks, I started to notice how dirty this place was, it certainly had the Commercial Street vibe from the 80's and 90's, but not the now C Street charm. It was really disgusting, everything and I do mean everything was nasty. Our coffee was finally done, I barely took a sip of my frappe and almost spit it out. We were already outside because there was no way I was going to sit inside that place I gave my drink to my husband, he thought is was horrible as well, he then tasted his own and his was bad too. He went back inside to let the employees know that our drinks were bad, but he was not even acknowledged when he went back in, there was only one other customer there and he was setting down, there were three employees there and not one acknowledged he walked in the door. He decided to leave our frappes on the counter and he walked out. We have been to several coffee shops and this was the most horrible one of all. I am shocked that the health department hasn't already shut this place down. Seriously, you don't want to go there. read more

I haven't eaten here enough to say that it is the best shop I've ever attended, but I haven't yet seen anything to ruin the perfect 5-star record that other reviewers have given it. It seems to be very much a bog-standard coffeehouse, with wi-fi, a decent selection of different drinks, and a frequent-drinker's discount card. It is a bit out of my way to come for frequent attendance, but the two times I have been in the neighborhood I found it worth my way to stop by. I have only had a couple of drinks here and not any sandwiches, but I found the drinks good (though their "Mint Momma" is not as minty as the mint-and-white-chocolate drink offered by the Dancing Mule). There is a fairly small front room and a large, roomy back room which includes a sofa and a couple of easy chairs around a coffee table. If you are in the Commercial Street area, Big Momma's is more than ample reason not to make the long trek down to the Square. I don't know that the converse is necessarily true, though, as in my experience one coffeeshop is just about as good as any other. read more

A new coffee flavor always a highlight and a recent raspberry addition was A-1 superior. The owner, a pillar of our community, and his staff are kind, sweet, hardworking and make the experience at Big Momma's both fun and fulfilling. Large banquet/meeting room in back, up front are barstools for people watching, great art, and no place better my student (to a HS) nearby loves to hang out with friends, enjoy the coffee and study. This is my neighborhood coffee shop and that makes me a smart (or lucky) fellow. I established a daily latte habit in the early 90's in Chicago that continues to this day and Big Momma's offers the best value in town, less than $3 for a small with two shots. Joe bakes on a daily basis so there are always sweets, the breakfast burritos go fast and the daily soup and sandwich menu offers a nice selection. 417 Magazine recently picked the Juliette as the best vegetarian sandwich in the city and when Joe makes his Jambalaya, look out! read more

Amazing people, although sometimes when we come in there is no one at the counter. I feel they are understaffed too often, and it usually takes a bit to get your order. This place is pretty neat. The seating is a little limited so plan to come at a time when you don't think they'll be busy. When we got there some sort of music club was meeting in the back which threw us a little off guard. The music they were playing however wasn't disruptive at all in working and once they left it was actually silent which was a little awkward. Their drinks seemed a little high in my opinion. I ordered an iced almond latte and a choose two with a Caesar salad and the Joliet sandwich and it was close to $13. The food was amazing and a good value but the coffee was way too strong. One of my favorite spots to come! The coffee is pretty good and the atmosphere is one of my favorite in Springfield. The coffee can be a little bitter so I sometimes ask for just a single shot of espresso on 2 shot drinks. Most of all the people are really kind. If I stay for a couple hours to study, often I'll be given a free refill on whatever drink I had that day. Also, the soup here is amazing! I don't think I'd say they have THE best coffee in Springfield, but they are to best place to get coffee, homemade soup, freshly made cookie, etc all in one spot. This is one of the most fun coffee shops I've been to in awhile, as most places on C-street have a great personality. I love their trivia for 25 cents off the drink, enough to start up a conversation with the personalities behind the counter who love to chat. I've been a Mudhouse fan for as long as I can remember, but Big Momma's is the first coffee house in Springfield to lure me away from my old favorite. Don't get me wrong, I still visit the Mudhouse nearly once a week, but Big Momma's has quickly become its equal. Besides having out-of-this-world good espresso (the Old 66 is my favorite), they also have a variety of sandwiches available as well. I did something I was told was a 'no no ' in college....I crossed the tracks. And I am so glad. Breakfast burritos, my family 'go to' when traveling, were not to disappoint. Coffee was good, latte perfect and foamy. My only complaint is the 14 year old who kept saying 'cocoa' in my ear and phrases like 'whipped cream ' such that I was thrown off track and did not notice the Mayan coffee.... yes, I'll be back. I really liked this place and how hip it was. The guys there were great, but I think I just got the wrong drink here and this is why I am rating it so low. I decided to try one of their seasonal specials....the Caramel Apple Cider. I was really excited for some warm apple cider, but I was really disappointed with what I got. They pulled out a bottle of what looked like generic apple cider from the fridge....they barely warmed it up and I didn't taste any caramel, but I did see weird white spots in my drink.....either the cup was not cleaned enough or the steamer just still had milk on it.......a little gross for me. Wish I had tried something else because I'm sure it would've been better than what I got! Pros: - Free WiFi - Cool guys - Seems like they have a new trivia question every day where you can get 25 cents off your drink! Cons: - my drink had white things floating in it and I think I could've made my drink warmer by sticking it in the microwave.....this item should be removed from the menu if all you are going to use is store bought apple juice! Why I gave it a 2..... I really liked the atmosphere and having free WiFi was a bonus!
