LOVE, Love, love... the Glorious Morning Muffins here. They are the best bran muffin I have eaten anywhere, and yes I have eaten a lot of bran muffins from east to west. There are good ones out there but these are my FAV, and I go out of my way to buy all you have every time I come home. I travel for my job and I always feel bad about buying you out, but I heard a rumor... these are to be discontinued? NOooooooo.... what will breakfast be like without your moist and super tasty bran muffin. BUT, after you visit Mudhouse, you'll think of a delicious, chocolate and espresso filled cup that gives wings to your day and a halo to your outlook. I love the Mudhouse. I've spent many days there studying and doing horrid group projects, but somehow under the glow of the coffee-house lighting, dairy-free latte in hand, those soul-sucking group projects don't seem so bad. It's a small storefront, parking can be a little tricky, but it's worth it to grab a seat and enjoy your beverage in an atmosphere that offers a calming ambiance. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, but quiet. I really liked how you could order and check out at the front of the coffee house without disturbing anyone conversing or working in the seating area! My boyfriend and I both ordered frappuccino's with whole milk and an extra shot. He ordered the frozen mudpuddle and I ordered the frozen turtle! Both were very sweet. What Mudhouse lacks (not much), they make up for in the atmosphere and extensive menu. They have a library of board games, magazines, and current newspapers as well as a community board where you can check out upcoming events and concerts. I love to stop in here for a healthy, vegetarian lunch. They have a sweet salad or sandwich menu where you can build-your-own or choose from a list of favorites. I love the expanded menu to include fruit smoothies (made from fresh fruit). Their daily soup options are always delicious, as well. As for the specialty coffee drinks, it will do the trick, but the frozen drinks are a bit too sweet for me. I don't mind it, as the place is perfect to meet a friend as it doesn't get too loud to hold a conversation. Their pure, french press coffee is amazingly fresh, though as they roast it down the street. I suggest drinking it black, as it's that good! As a vegan, I appreciate the variety of offerings for soy drinks and even vegan baked goods. If you're a fan of tea, this is the place to be. Wide variety of caffeinated teas, herbal teas, rooibus teas. There's a whole wall to choose from! Food and muffins are good here, too. Good luck getting a seat here, though. The place is usually packed. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the products they serve. Went for the first time today and had an Iced African Safari Tea. It was excellent. However, while paying for the tea my friend made a comment about chick-fil-a being closed because it was Sunday. The service worker (a petite young brunette woman) asked "Do you go there on any other day?" The woman continued to speak on her opinions of the company and had a terrible annoyed look on her face and her speech switched from a sweet tone to almost a preachy tone. Their curbside pick up was confusing as we ordered during the allotted time between 7:00 am - 10:00 am (9:30 am) and were still called to tell us that they were no longer doing curbside around 9:50. I went here on a Sunday because the Coffee House I typically go to was closed. I would definitely say this place is pretty average. They have several different flavors you can choose from, but they didn't have very many non-diary options. At first the barista said they only had soy and oat milk, but she then remembered they had almond milk as well, I prefer coconut milk, so I was disappointed about that. I ordered a Vanilla frappe and when I tasted it, it tasted more like a vanilla shake. I asked the barista if they had any coffee or espresso in it, she said that the mix they use did have coffee in it, I couldn't taste it so I had to get a shot of espresso. The barista was very nice and helpful, she made sure I was happy in the end. Overall, I think this place is overpriced, the atmosphere was a little louder than I expected, and everything else was average. I definitely prefer this place to the bigger coffee chain shops, but I will be sticking to my favorite coffee house Monday through Saturday. read more

This is absolutely the best coffee shop I've been to in Springfield. The people are very friendly and helpful and the prices are cheap. The sound is very peaceful and easy to work in. They have a lot of different tables to sit at to accommodate different sizes. I ordered an almond honey iced latte and it was incredible. Great place to grab a coffee and snack and settle in to study. They have plenty of good drink options for all tastes. The only complaint I have is that since they are located in the heart of downtown it can be hard to find parking if there's any events going on and if you stay too late you have to navigate through all the drunken college students at the bars across the street. I'm actually fond of the Mudhouse for some reason. When I'm not feeling up for Starbucks, or they all seemed to be closed for some "Art of Espresso," then the Mudhouse is a decent fit. They're food is decent, and their coffee is pretty good as well. If I were to envision a cafe in Seattle, this is probably what I would expect. You know, now that I think about it, it does have a Santa Cruz vibe to it with the hippies as baristas. In any regard, they have free WiFi, which is always a plus. They also have random power strips scattered about for you to plug in your electronics. One great thing about here is that it is downtown. So, if you've been hanging out with a friend sipping coffee, you have the option of going to a bar in the area. My only problem I've ever had is that it always seems to be crowded and it takes them awhile to make the coffee. I'm not really sure why that is, but if you want to people watch, then this is a decent place to hit up. I'm always surprised at the amount of gay clientele here, but what do you expect given the options around here. If you do decide to sit and chill out here, there is artwork to gaze upon that seems to be in rotation. One of the walls is all brick, which is reminiscent of older times, although it certainly does not pass muster for foundational precision--there are plenty of cracks and crumbling bricks. The one thing I find a little kitschy is when you place your order, you are given a little Uno card to set on your table to indicate your location to the barista. If you're looking for a cafe that isn't Starbucks, then you will either want to come here, or their sister location the Mudhouse on Central. read more

It's about time I wrote a review for this place. As a freshman in college, I've already spent many a night studying at Mudhouse and enjoying their coffee, but there is much to be liked here even if you're not a college student. First of all, I favor Mudhouse over all the other Springfield coffee haunts because it's got the best balance of flavor. Coffee Ethic is famous for that very in-your-face, no-frills coffee, and Potter's House is so loaded with sugar that I can't ingest half a frozen drink without getting a tummy ache (and a toothache); but Mudhouse hits right in the middle, which undoubtedly helps in attracting more Springfield customers. Secondly, this place is consistent, and that's saying a lot because I've been here dozens of times. I've only ever had one less-than-enjoyable experience, and it was on a night when they were offering any student from my college free coffee... enough said. Thirdly, don't be intimidated by the vibe in this place- it's for everyone. College kids obviously flock to this coffehouse, but then again so do couples and families and chatty, elderly women. The staff is pretty serious about pleasing customers and being efficient, and the atmosphere is unique/interesting, but can easily be a neutral environment when you need to focus. Things to bring with you: money for coffee (always less than $5) and a lemon bar or something else delicious, a book or a friend, and your inside voice. Oh, and a Mudhouse punch card... I fancy the Peanut Butter Puddle, but a Happy Hippie is a close second. I've spent many regret free hours at this little place. It has many of the essential things that a coffee shop should have. Cozy seating, warm comfort-inducing lighting and that intoxicating coffee fragrance. I have tried many of their specialty beverages and their extensive variety of simple hand prepared loose leaf tea keeps me coming back. Their cold coffee beverages such as the frozen mud-turtle and the peanut butter puddle are hands down the best frozen coffee drinks that I have ever had. They blend the ice and coffee mix exactly right so it gets that nearly milkshake consistency... (Far superior than that watery coffee surrounded by too many cubes being offered at similar places). On the same note, I think their fruit smoothies are just about as exceptional. If you don't mind a few seeds in your teeth, I suggest the berry smoothie... I don't think fruit has ever been so satisfying. I should mention that they do a lunch too. They have some really comforting homemade soups here. (Comforting seems to be the unofficial theme of this review). They have a roasted red pepper bisque topped with cheese crumbles that I think I'd like to take a bath in. They also offer well made sandwiches, and unique salad options. Lunch here is somehow cheap, healthy, and delish. Given my insatiable sweet tooth, I have also enjoyed a number of their desserts and have nothing but good things to say. The Mocha Cinnamon Muffin is practically a right of passage as far as muffins are concerned. The gooey butter bars are a sugar coma inducing fantasy. They have some solid simple cookies, and I believe there is even a vegan option or two... Which brings me to my next point. This place gets pretty busy at peak hours (lunch and later evening). This can sometimes mean a lot of hipster indie kids. This is a point I can usually ignore as I am often so far into my own world via itunes and my mac book (whoa hipster) that I don't take notice. Despite it's sometimes off-putting indie vibe, The Mudhouse is the most well-rounded coffee house in the area. read more

I try to avoid writing reviews on coffee shops, chain restaurants, and stores, but I couldn't help but to squeeze this one in due to the MudLounge. There's a real monopoly, so-to-speak going on here. Honestly, there really isn't, but the overall strategy of the MudHouse and MudLounge is outstanding! Get drunk on Friday night at the 'Lounge and cure the hangover at the 'House Saturday morning. What's nice, is that you'll experience equitable atmospheres pertinent to design. I must complain about the pricing, however. Even though I've been submerged into believing that coffee should be expensive, a piece of me still angers over the fact that I can't leave a coffee shop without dropping $10 or more on beverages. Them's liquor prices! I do like to sit down and read for a bit, but I must lament at the noise. Often times, the baristas play their own music over the speakers and it can be quite frustrating. Yes, I understand that this place is downtown and those are downtown-type people at the helm of the espresso press, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you can play "artsy" music while people are reading. I love individuality as much as the next guy, but you don't need to force your individuality through the loudspeakers! I won't give it a five because of the price. Food's good, but I can make the same sandwich at 95% of the cost at home. They do have a great lunch deal if you get the chance, but I wouldn't eat there for the sake of real food. Coffee house lunch is a snack, at best. Sure, you can fill up, but I hardly call a sandwich and soup lunch--I'm rambling. I do not think any coffee place should ever be rated unless it is done so by coffee place critics. On Yelp, 4 should be the maximum any coffee can earn. read more

I've been away for 3 years now, and every time I visit I stop by and make sure to pick up some ooey gooey butter cake. But yeah, MUDHOUSE: It is the stuff of high school dreams. I usually don't get latte's, but when I do, they better be wholesome. I purchased a Caramel Latte from Mudhouse. Perhaps not a purist's drink, but a good Latte involves much skill. I could immediately tell that the drink was made with whole and wholesome milk. It was CREAMY. The caramel sauce is made in-house and was smooth. I felt like I was drinking a velvety cloud. The foam was not overwhelming either though. The sweetness was very mild without the harsh bite that Starbucks Caramel Lattes have. As of now, this is the second best Caramel Latte (behind Prevail Union in Auburn, AL) I have ever tasted. If I could make one suggestion in this drink: It needs a little more of a coffee bite. I am not sure if a slightly darker roast or more espresso would do, but I felt like the coffee's flavour was lost in mix. Mudhouse also offers fast, free wifi, plenty of seating, and energetic and hip atmosphere. For a midwestern town in SW Missouri, the clientele was very diverse and refreshing! The staff is friendly and even bring your drink out to you. If you need a place to drink good coffee, have deep conversations, I will highly recommend Mudhouse. read more

The coffee is SO SMOOTH and rich. If you are a coffee snob, you will like Mudhouse. I got an iced coffee with room for cream and my spouse got a caramel latte. The latte was made with PERFECT proportions--it was the perfect blend of caramel, coffee and milk. I've worked as a barista in the Northwest and I haven't tasted a quality drink like that many times. The iced coffee was also very smooth and rich. I would go back to get a latte in a heartbeat. The only downside is that they mostly make their "fancy" drinks in two sizes: 16 oz and 20(?), so if you're not in the mood for a lot of java, consider sharing your drink or prepare to drink it for a while. Another thing that I thought was unique was that you can order an in-house french press. You can get a 3 cup for around $4. That is a seriously AWESOME deal. I come here on a fairly regular basis. I love the teas available, but am not a huge fan of their coffee. The vegan cookie and the gf chocolate chip cookie are amazing!! I have had a sandwich here on occasion, but find this place perfect if you just need somewhere to work for a little bit outside of your house or office.
