What a great find in Custer. There are two restaurants here. Upstairs is the Pounding Fathers restaurant. On ground level is the brew pub where we ate. It was very good. The menu had a unique variety of items to select from and the food was delicious. My wife had the Indonesian Fried Rice with shrimp and I had the Brisket Sandwich. Both were excellent. Rigo was our server. He was courteous, friendly, attentive, and helpful. You couldn't ask for a better server anywhere. The atmosphere was very nice. We were there on a cold and windy day and truly enjoyed the warm fire from the rustic fireplace. We have stopped in Custer many times and enjoyed several of its restaurants but from now on we will be returning here. If you are in the Southern Black Hills don't pass up the chance to eat here. read more

We arrived on July 4. No IPAs left, tart cherry was gone. All that was left was the Porter and watered-down beer. Anyway, I had the porter and an elk burger and was happy. The elk meat was very good, great burger. Corn bites were also very tasty. I tried other beers, the stout was watery, so were the ambers. Trash can nachos had no flavor. The fish and chips are recommended. I liked what I ordered, but others in my party did not. Don't judge SD beers by this place. Spearfish has some excellent breweries. This place was absolutely packed on a weekday. We stopped in and went to the upstairs bar. It was hot hot hot hot in there. No AC and fans weren't even going ? Bathroom had zero working toilets... and disgustingly messy. We sat at the bar and ordered some food. Bartender was very nice. When we got the food- it took a bit and came out room temperature. Food was okay. Tenderloin was wrapped in bacon which wasn't specified on the menu. I love bacon-- but not when it's undercooked and rubber. Buffalo steak was good - sauce on top was okay. Side of veggies was probably the best part. Potato- was good but what's with the processed cheese on top? Not great. Probably would not go back. Very over priced for the quality of food. read more

Stopped by yesterday afternoon. It was mid-afternoon between lunch and dinner, so not crazy busy. On the positive side, the employees are friendly and our server was a sweetheart. Unfortunately, our beer was warm in warm glasses. I understand IPA's on tap aren't served real cold, but the glasses shouldn't be warm. Two of us had a basic salad and they were warm. Didn't taste too bad but a salad shouldn't be warm. One of the pizzas came out way after everyone else was about half done with their meals. Maybe this place just having kitchen issues? What a delight! Huge venue - taproom on the main level, full restaurant on the upper level. Wee opted for the patio on thee main level and received excellent service from Grace. Wee enjoyed a couple of drought beers (Old Lion for me, a sour for the hubs). We started with fried pickles - I love the slices (vs spears) and choice of dipping sauce. I would go out of my way to stop here again and again! We walked in and they were SLAMMED, we were greeted by very friendly staff letting us know their computers crashed so they weren't talking orders for 20 minutes because the kitchen was so backed up from the crash, he offered drinks and bread while we waited, it wasn't a problem at all, we were looking to have a few drinks before we ate anyway. We ordered flights and loved all of the beers. We started with the Duck Flatbread, which was amazing, they brought sriracha to the table and I was a little skeptical on using it because I don't do spicy foods.. OH MY! It was a game changer, there is a reason they bring it out - try it! Then we ordered 2 pasta dishes, both being absolutely amazing. The pork tenderloin was cooked perfectly and was tender, my husband isn't a big grilled veggies person but scarfed those down before I could snag a picture! The mushroom sauce just topped it off for his plate.. Per the waiter's (Edgar) recommendation I ordered the scallop angel hair pasta, it was freaking delicious. I've eaten at the olive gardens, the papa vinos, the villa macri's and these were the best pastas I've ever had, AT A BREWERY at that! As we were rolling into Custer, SD I looked yo my right and what to my wondering eyes should appear but Mt Rushmore Brewing! My 164th brewery visit. Score! MRB has a huge outdoor seating area, as well as a really good size bar and taproom. They have a big event center in front and a restaurant upstairs. I went with a flight of five beers, and we also ordered the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. We were going to order the bratt platter but they were out so we went with a prime rib pizza with Alfredo sauce. Black Hills Gold Pilsner. Light color, light flavor and quite a good beer. The Blue Spruce maibock had good aroma and flavor. A bit malty of course but not too sweet. Time for a Scottish ale laddies! Trust Buster Scottish ale had a really nice malty flavor all the way through. This is a fine Scottish ale. I had to try The Old Lion, which is the bourbon barrel aged Scottish ale. It was a little confusing at first because the menu at the table said it was on nitro but the menu board didn't say anything about it bring on nitro. It was clearly not on nitro when it arrived. No big deal although I love beers on nitro. Regardless this was really good beer. It had a sweet bourbon flavor to it. Buffalo Snot! How could I not try an oatmeal stout on nitro with a name like that? I couldn't... This is an excellent oatmeal stout. According to the menu at the table this is aged in whiskey barrels. I have to say I don't get any whiskey flavors out of this, and the menu board on the wall doesn't mention it so in my not-so-professional opinion I don't think this was aged in a whiskey barrel. Does it matter? Absolutely not. I really liked this oatmeal stout. I decided to revisit the Trust Buster just as our stuffed mushrooms and prime rib pizza arrived. Both were really good. SWPFTD is not generally a fan of white sauce pizza but she enjoyed it as well. The beer and food at MRB is definitely worth a stop. Like many want to be breweries this place thinks they can spend tons of money on ambience and brewery equipment and hire an inexperienced home brewer. If you are a beer connoisseur you will know what I mean. The average Bud drinker will most likely love it. With that said they have fantastic bottled beer like Chimay, Trappist and Ayinger. read more

Found this place while passing through South Dakota to see the Crazy Horse memorial. The place is in the Black Hills where there are a lot of cool places and great natural beauty. They have a pub downstairs and a restaurant upstairs with slightly different menus. The beer was excellent. The food was just right. The service was top notch! We loved this brewery for many reasons. The atmosphere was very inviting and relaxing, the outmeal stout tasted delicious. Not too overwhelming and the food at the Pounding Fathers Restaurant located upstairs was decedent. We had the Tatanka steaks medium cooked, absolutely delicious. Looked at the menu online while we made our way through and the food options looked great. And to be honest in concept the food menu is pretty solid for Custer but they missed the execution. Just a lot of little things that when added up make the experience miss the mark. App was a little cold, duck sliders a little dry and the order slightly off. The tap room was a really good vibe and the service was friendly and prompt. If this place would consolidate their menu and focus their efforts on doing 1/2 of the menu really well it would be slam dunk. The beers were solid. Pilsner and golden were exactly what they should be. Cold crisp and good full flavor. The bourbon aged Scottish ale was really good and usually not my taste but I'd order it again. When you'd return to a brewery/tap room for the beer I'd say it your doing something right. Just tighten up your menu and this place would be a must not miss as for now get a pint enjoy the music videos and roll on. read more

This was one of the best breweries I have ever been to. The service was insanely fast and the people are overly nice. (This is a great thing by the way) The beer was excellent and top notch. My Rushmore Brewing was one of my favorite places to eat in South Dakota. Staff were amazing and super friendly and attentive. We actually ended up eating here multiple times during our stay. Great options for beer and they have a good variety on tap. Downstairs they have food and we ordered a couple of pizzas. I had a smoke salmon pizza (which looked nothing like the picture so a little disappointing) and it was delicious. A little heavy for me with cream cheese and cheese, but still delicious. They do not go light on the toppings. Upstairs they have more fine dining options. My husband and I tried the Mac N Cheese with Choriza and it was soooo good. My husband got the beer can chicken and it was a little dry, I had the Beet Salad and it was good. Great outdoor space and patio for spending time outside. Was excited to try the beer and food at Mount Rushmore Brewing Company (Our Pounding Fathers Restaurant). I like the beer had a Pilsner. Had the brat in mac combo. The mac & cheese was very reminiscent to Kraft mac & cheese. I am pretty sure that's what they use. Very few onions on the bratwurst which was advertised as lots of grilled onions. I had to ask for more which they kindly obliged. Service was so so and it was even pretty slow when we were there. I guess the best thing about this place is that it is called Mount Rushmore Brewing Company. I'm really not trying to be a downer but this is just an average place! read more

This is for Pounding Fathers.. Pretty good place if you have kids (which we do). We didn't get a chance to sit there, but the outdoor seating you can let the kids play cornhole (and keep an eye on them) while you eat. I had the walleye which was good (a little too much sauce and breading for my personal liking..but definitely didn't not ruin the meal). My wife had the the Tatanka buffalo filet with the bacon Brussels sprouts which were both REALLY good. A copious amount of beer choices to top it off. The servers were all practicing safe measures with face masks on. There was both indoor and outdoor dining. They had flights for 4 for $2 a piece. The IPA I got was flavorful. While on vacation we try to eat at the local breweries. We bring our kids along so we have to make sure they serve food and are family friendly. This place was So naturally while we were in Custer we had to try Mt Rushmore Brewing. This place is cute. The outside had plenty of space and they had some lawn games and seating. Then you go inside and they have a bar and pub height tables and a "bar type" menu. Like nachos (they came in a bucket and you dump it over to eat, super cute) soft pretzels, wings that sort of stuff. But we wanted food, dinner food! So we went upstairs to where they had a full restaurant menu. There was a bar upstairs as well along with regular dining tables. The food was alright. None of us were wowed by our dinners but they were good. I didn't get pictures of all the food but did get some The best part for us was they had a foozeball table, a shuffleboard table and a kids menu (seriously it's the little things that'll do it) The staff was all amazing and very patient with us being a large group with a 3 year old and all of us getting side tracked with the games.
