I am torn on my review at Mr. Lin. I ordered the garlic chicken lunch special to go which the menu claimed would not come with soup however I was provided with soup that was not egg drop but something slightly spicy containing mushrooms, bits of chicken, and strips of bamboo shoots. I have to say this soup had much more flavor than my garlic chicken entrée. When I walked into place my order the cashier laughed and said sesame chicken? I said no but I'd like to try the garlic chicken, but I am now regretting my decision as there was very little flavor in the main entrée itself. Hungry for some good Chinese? Go elsewhere. I spent $30 on food my dogs wouldn't even eat. The sweet and sour chicken was hard fried chicken tenders with sweet and sour sauce in a separate container. Veggies were in another container. Rice in a fourth. Way too much rice. The egg drop soup and the egg roll were a bit on the better side. I would eat them again. Thinking of them even now. Fabulous, fast and economical Chinese food. The owners of Mr. Lin previously operated New China in Bluff Park. We still eat at that establishment, but with the family home for the holidays we trekked out to Helena for a taste of our favorites! We ordered Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken. Lunch specials are such a great buy ~ soup (Hot and Sour, but Egg Drop is available by request), wonton, egg roll, fried rice and entree ~ generous portion and YUMMY!! Sesame Chicken ~ tastes fresh and light, not overly breaded. Mongolian Beef ~ heavy on meat but with plenty of onion, sauce is not too heavy and not too sweet. Egg rolls are flavorful; crunchy on the outside. Hubby likes his with red sauce, but they're great all by themselves. Fortune cookies top off the experience. Take out is available. I think the lunch specials are available until 3 pm. Do your wallet a favor and order these plentiful meals before 3. Parking lot parking. Cute boutique/gift shop two doors down. Make sure you call your order in until they get the bugs worked out. I sent in my order online, received a confirmation number for the order, but when I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, they told me the online ordering system was down and they didn't receive my order. It was Christmas Day and this place was absolutely smacked with customers. A group of us walked in, the line was nearly at the door. Not only did the cashier knock out the line in a matter of minutes; she pulled the most gangster move of all time and was able to accommodate the customers who only spoke Spanish, by speaking Spanish. Not only was the service fast but our food couldn't have tasted more fresh. Our Christmas dinner tradition officially transitioned from Waffle House to Mr. Lin's. Mr. Lin's forever. read more

We were loyal to Lucky China for years. They knew my wife's voice when she called in orders. She had a problem!! The patriarchs of Lucky China decided it was time to retire and sold their operation. The current owners rebranded the location Mr. Lin. I've grabbed take out a couple times for my wife. The first time she was mad that it wasn't Lucky China. She ate the food but morned the loss of her favorite spot in town. Last night I picked up one of her staple dishes the house lo mein and an egg roll, an egg roll and soup for my daughter. She was much more receptive to their fare on this occasion. She said the food was almost as good. Naturally a bias remains after years of going to Lucky China. She conceded it was very similar maybe the same recipe only tweaked a little. My daughter loved her soup and egg roll. The lady at the counter was friendly and polite. The kitchen appeared very busy. The interior is materially unchanged. The menu is a bit different. Far fewer options. It doesn't appear they offer sushi presently either. I'm sure we will be back and my wife will become a regular and get on a first name basis with the new owners. read more

This is the same group that operated New China in Bluff Park for decades. I asked why they moved, but did not get an answer, and did not press the issue. There is a younger crew there now in bp, still holding it down but just not as good in my opinion. For me, this is the best Chinese around Birmingham. I now drive from Homewood to Helena! read more

Why one star? Because I haven't received my order yet. Ordered online via Mr Lin's website on a random Tuesday. Got a confirmation email that order was received. Drove 20 minutes to pickup order only to get there and see that they were closed !!!! Hours on the door say open Mon-Sun, but sign in window says closed on Tuesdays. Website still clearly taking orders and sending confirmation when they are not even open. First and last attempt I'll have with this place. Complete waste of my time since I had to regroup and think of something quick for two hungry children. read more
