It's soul food Sunday and Refined to Go is going to give you some good soul food. On the menu today was country fried chicken, meatloaf and smothered pork chops ($19). You get a protein, 2 veggies and a starch. Service was good. The lady taking the orders was so sweet and gave us her opinion on what to order. I got the port chops with cabbage and mashed potatoes and my husband got the chicken with squash casserole, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. Both were so good! We got our food to go. Love they have a seasonal menu and switch it up to allow you to try different things. Indoor seating and outdoor patio to sit in the warmer months with plenty of parking. I am so glad I was finally able to stop by Refined To Go! If you want your grandmother's well seasoned cooked food, then RTG is the place to be! We stopped by on a Sunday and they actually have a selective menu. They have their regular, Winter menu during the other days they are open. I had the hamburger steak with gravy and rice and my sides were Mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole, and greens with turkey neck. My friend had the fried catfish meal and also with the same sides. Ohhh and we had some good, buttery cornbread too. With all of that food, it was still priced very well. The food was served hot and was very tasty. The only side I wasn't a big fan of was the sweet potato casserole. It wasn't as sweet and had a little too much cinnamon seasoning. It also was a little dry, but I added some melted butter and some pepper to it and brought it back to life. Other than that, this is down south, country cooking at its best! This business is only 15 min for I-65. It is worth the drive. When we travel we try to find locally owned restaurants. I knew the owner was a trained chef when I looked at the menu. 2 meals and 2 drink was $42. Well worth it. It was a sophisticated menu with a hometown friendliness. This really is off the beaten path. It's located in old Town helena behind the area of good fellas bar. It is to go food but not your typical to go food. There are so tables and chairs set up if you want to eat your food out there. Chef James is always greeting you with a welcoming smile. I decided on the blue cheese burger with French fries. I found a great way to enjoy a beautiful Sunday by getting a Soul Food Sunday meal from Refined to Go. Bookmarked for months but worth the wait. I follow them on FB and saw the menu and knew I had to try the Oxtails. I've never had oxtails but I had a feeling I would enjoy them and I did!!! Tender, flavorful meat, and nice portion. My meal also included cabbage & kale (loved the two together), macaroni and cheese (nice noodle to cheese ratio), fried okra (I normally ask for extra crisp, I didn't have to, fried just like I prefer), and banana pudding (with actual bananas, nice ending to my meal). This also turned into Soul Food Monday as I had enough for another meal. Oh and customer service is awesome, pleasant attitudes and very helpful!!! I have been craving chicken Alfredo for weeks, and no one has come close to looking near about good enough. I was a little skeptical about this place but I've heard great things. Called my order in and went for pick up 20 minutes later. Adorable cashier who seems a bit new but very helpful. This new take out recently opened in Helena. They have take out only, and are open very limited hours; currently only on Sundays. The menu changes periodically. This is a gourmet take our restaurant. Everything we have gotten is excellent! We've had the shrimp and grits, braised beef tips with sweet potatoes, and the panko crusted chicken with mashed potatoes. The dinners are excellent value for the money. I'd expect to pay $30 a plate in a sit down restaurant for meals of this quality. They get busy at 4:30 right before they close, so don't wait until 4:50 to place tour order! read more

MUST TRY!!! Short take: Chef quality food to-go! We ordered the Blackened Chicken Alfredo and the Shrimp Tacos. The food was amazing! Great presentation (even in styrofoam.) Long take: Read Chef Jeff's story on their website refinedtogo.com. This guy literally started from the bottom working as a dish washer at Highlands Bar and Grill. He worked his way up to Sous Chef. He is one of the elite now and has taken the opportunity of going out on his own to put his skills to the test; and has delivered! I ordered over the phone and he took my order. I picked up my order about 15 mins later. The food was hot and excellently presented. Payment was at pickup with a card. This guy threw in a piece of Apple Pie for free. The pie was hot and fresh and is a must try. My interaction with Chef Jeff was awesome. He is very humble, loves his family and wants to bring good food to his community. My family tried Refined to Go for the first time last night. Not sure why we haven't tried it before now, but so glad we finally did. Everything was wonderful. Wish I had pictures but we devoured it before we could get pics. We had the Chicken Alfredo, The Butter Burger, The Spaghetti, and The Chicken Fingers. Every dish was so flavorful and thought out. It was obvious that there was care taken with each dish. We are so thankful to have a place that's more than just your typical fast food or chain restaurant. This week I decided to go to a small, fairly new black-owned soul food restaurant in Helena. I called in an order of the Blackened Salmon from their spring menu. It came served on garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach and it was all topped with a creamy crawfish and chorizo sauce. My food took a while to come out but once I did get it, it was well worth the wait and arguably the best salmon I have ever had. This was an exceptional choice we made for dinner. Everything we tried was amazing. We bought two plates each for having the next day. My husband had salmon and fish tacos. The salmon was absolutely delicious. It was like no other rate I've ever had. Perfectly cooked. The fish tacos had a amazing flavor to say the least. I had the ribs that melted in your mouth with perfectly made rice that had a smoky flavor and the best sweet corn that I've ever had. I am returning from my long-time hiatus from Yelp just to review this one restaurant. We have been wanting to check this place out for several months, simply due to the chef's pedigree and the fact that Helena has a serious shortage of decent places to eat. I'll be honest, I was a bit skeptical because, Helena isn't an area that screams high-end dining (don't get me wrong, I love Helena, it's just a small town). But, skepticism aside, we drove into "downtown" Helena and found Refined-to-go hidden back off the main drive, tucked back behind the main strip. It's a bit of an inconspicuous location but serves it's purpose as a take-out joint. There is a small outdoor dining area, which is nice, but I don't think it was really meant to be a sit-down spot. The wait was longer than I would have expected for take-out (I was not smart enough to call ahead) but exactly what I would have expected for fine dining. When we purchased our food, we could see Chef James cooking in the back, which was a nice sign that our food was being handled by a pro. And boy, were we blown away!! Both my wife and I got the shrimp tacos. I have had more than a few shrimp tacos in my day, from high end to street carts in Mexico. Tacos are my jam. These have now been crowned as the best shrimp tacos I've ever had! Congrats Chef, you've earned yourself a long-term customer! Everything about it was perfect - a bit spicy, a bit sweet, a bit savory. And it was a nice, large portion of food. Honestly, such a great gem here in Helena. Well Alright!! I was introduced to Refined To Go through my wife and we decided to give it a try today. We arrived outside the quaint cafe style setting where your greeted with a sign of 3 directions on how to proceed with ordering. Nice touch! After getting the menu order form I walked up to the door window where I was thergreeted with a warm sincere greeting!! After speaking with this Gentleman I learned his name was Chef James and his demeanor was of a true professional. So I ordered and paid and returned to my vehicle where chef James would bring it out personally when ready. He delivered and assured me I would enjoy his food! When I paid I jokingly said I wasn't going to tip because I haven't eaten anything yet..FYI! It's worth EVERY DOLLAR so feel free to tip this phenomenal Chef!! And I mean PHENOMENAL....! Chef James credentials are extremely impressive this Gentleman has put in the real effort to bring 7 star food at a very affordable price!! Ho. Ly. Crap. This was so super delicious! We went yesterday when laziness set in and nobody wanted to cook. First time here. We ordered the pork loin Marsala with sautéed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes, chicken fingers and fries, bang bang shrimp tacos, and a wedge salad. EVERYTHING--and I mean EVERYTHING--was delicious. The pork loin marsala was seasoned perfectly and the marsala sauce was GREAT. I loved the way it also soaked into the mashed potatoes. Made for a very delicious bite. The sautéed spinach was a great way to get in some greens without feeling deprived or like I was forced to eat them. They all made a wonderful composed bite. The shrimp tacos were huge, and had a spicy bite but not too bad. I'm a wimp when it comes to spice and it didn't bother me. Shrimp were fresh and wonderful. The chicken fingers came with a delicious honey mustard sauce drizzled on them. Some of the best chicken fingers I've had outside of my mother's. And the fries were perfect--crinkle cut and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The wedge salad was also delicious! Best salad dressing for it, and the fried onion strings were so crispy and wonderful. I also want to say that Chef James is a great guy, wonderful sense of humor and very friendly. He'll answer any of your questions! We wanted to be sure the chicken fingers would be enough for an adult and it wasn't like a kids option, so when my mom called she asked if it was a kids meal. Chef James said, "Yeah, if your kid likes to eat!" (Side note: it's definitely enough for an adult.) Definitely 100% coming back!
