My husband and come here once a month for breakfast. The food is good. We decided to go on Mothers Day and we knew it would be busy. We arrived about 930am and there were a few tables open. It took a while for anyone to acknowledge us but once the waitress did, she sat is down. Everything was ok until she came to our table and pulled a chair that we weren't using and moved it to another table. She didn't say anything to us. It was rude but whatever. Then a new waitress came by and put the bill on the table and asked if we needed anything. We said no, we were good. We were finishing up our coffee. She said, Well we have many people on our waitlist that are waiting for a table and then she walked away. She was very rude . It was now 10:45am. We just got up and left. Open since 1978 this is one of the classic, famous diners on former Route 66. The service and prices were great however, the food was just good and given all of the steep competition in terms of other diners in the area I had to give D's a four, but overall we still enjoyed our breakfast. Inside looks as you would expect from the outside in that it is a traditional, 1950s retro diner. I have been going through all the diners in LA County and this was one of my very last ones on the list. It's located in eastern Los Angeles, in La Verne, in a sleepier part of town. There is a large parking lot attached so parking was free and easy. Also, our server was very polite and just like all diners everything that we ordered came out very fast for a fair price. I usually get Eggs Benedict or a Country Fried Steak when I go to a diner, but this visit I wanted to try one of their newly added items: the Loco Moco. It was not the best version that I've had this year, but it was still really good, the burger patty was cooked perfectly, so were the eggs, however, the gravy wasn't as tasty as some others that I've had recently. It was a very large sized portion, so I was quite full after finishing it. The menu does have a lot of other classic dishes on it, which I would try if I stop in again in the future. I would suggest this to anyone in the area, although there are a few other diners close by that I believe edge this one out. read more

We've been coming to Mr D's for over 20 years now. The menu has changed, but the service has not. We always get the same friendly and warm welcome each time. And the food offerings got pared down - which is great because too many choices can be overwhelming - and they retained the most popular menu items. Definitely the draining of the salads. Both times we attempted before we wrote a review. The salad had so much water that the dressing to water ratio was definitely off. The first time the mini berry pie was so banding that it made use come back just for pie. The second time we came we decided it was the last time. The pie wasn't like the first time it was old and when we let the waiter know they tried to come and explain it was made that morning. We probably got the one from the day before. I've been coming a lot more since they updated their menu. I have been very impressed with all the food! I also tried the pumpkin pie which was to die for, lol. I love this place a lot. While the food was great and they put together a really good combination in the country breakfast--country gravy over sausage over biscuits plus two eggs and hash browns--the service I found was slow at times. It's not their fault: they are a pretty busy joint. But still at the end of the meal I was left waiting for another coffee refill and the bill after that when it became clear there wouldn't be time for a refill. And, while the first half engendered good thoughts about how great the place was, the end of the meal I just felt kind of annoyed no one would refill a coffee or take my money without what felt like excessive flagging someone down. Again, I loved the meal and the first half of the meal was perfect service. I just hope my next trip here isn't met with the same level of inattentiveness that colored my experience at the end of the meal. read more

This is a delightful Old-fashioned diner in the La Verne neighborhood. The owners went all out on the design, decor and furnishings. The menu gives generous portions and has good selection of breakfast omelets, egg scramble and skillet meals. The pancakes, waffles and French toast have your favorite fruit toppings (strawberry, Blueberry, chocolate chip, banana, etc). The Lunch and dinner menu is also impressive with burgers, fried chicken, pasta, meatloaf and salads. I ordered the Sliders, which were bigger than the average mini Sliders I have had at many other places. My strategy was to eat a light meal and a chocolate milk shake. Everything was delicious! The customer service from the hostess to the wait staff was very good and the employees were friendly. You could tell that they enjoy their job. The restaurant is squeaky clean throughout the restaurant and patio. It is a pleasure to dine here. The prices are a little on the high side, but the amount you receive could easily be shared or leftovers taken home for a second meal. Today is Valentines Day so of course you expect a wait at any busy restaurant. But I gotta say it wasn't that busy here. Hostess never even looked up at us because she was working on to go orders. No hello, no we will be with you soon, no acknowledgment. And then a nicer gentleman came out and sat us at a table. And the hostess who I'm know guessing is a waitress along with a waiter, came through the area we were sitting both of them. And spoke to the other tables around us, brought drinks, brought food, took orders, and also brought the checks. Went there a few weeks ago and it seems the customers base has changed a lot. It was not as busy, not that positive attitude that we enjoyed from a Greek-owned establishment on a Sunday morning. Service was lacking in that the servers were more interested in chatting than service and the server was a little crass. It has become quite the liberal environment, as before it was rather neutral--maybe why much of is La Verne Heights base did not seem to be there. The food was about the same. But the ambience made us want to eat and leave. I hope the owner changes the vibe in that place, then we will be back. read more

Waitress was friendly and outgoing however it took some time for the food to come out. I was hungry so forgot to take pics of the food This is what we ordered: *Roast Beef w/ roasted veggies and baked potato... only the baked potato was yummy. The roast beef looked like it came from a frozen dinner meal. I had a couple of bites and had to pass. *Turkey and mushroom burger.. my hubby ordered this with onions and they were cut pretty thick. I loveee Mr D's! I used to come here all the time before I moved to Central California. I was in the area and stopped by and it didn't disappoint. Stuffed French toast with Nutella is always a must but I ate it before I could take a picture. My bf and I shared the classic burger. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming, and the food is always so good (and affordable)! Moreover, our night was made even better thanks greatly to our server, Estebán. Me & the husband love Mr. D's and travel 30ish miles to eat here. I'm a creature of habit and usually order simple breakfasts or their chicken fettuccine after which is really good. We've also been to their other location in Placentia and everything between the two locations are the same. Friendly workers, family friendly vibes, and food comes pretty quickly even when busy. Recent trip we noticed they changed to new menu's and added a couple new dishes. I decided to try the Charbroiled chicken dinner. It's a half chicken in their own spices with two sides, I chose corn and their greek lemon butter rice. Sad to report that the chicken was cooked well and juicy, but I couldn't taste a thing regarding flavor and the rice didn't taste anything of lemon. Regardless, we'll still be back! read more

We sure waited a long time for a pretty mediocre lunch. My wife's patty melt was the highlight. My roast beef melt had watery beef and ortega chiles. My last bite finally had a bit of chile with flavor. That one bite was what the whole sandwich should have been. Both melts had nice grilled bread. The portions are generous. I didn't lije either of our sides but some of that is a matter of style. I don't care for steak fries and these didn't change my opinion. The cole slaw sweet and heavy on mayo. I guess some people like it that way. The waitresses were busy so I'll forgive them for asking what I was drinking (looking at my empty glass) but then never refilling my iced tea.
