Not that it would've changed their obviously unfortunate fate, but oh how I wish I had written this sooner. In part because it feels a bit weird to write about a place that has already closed, but mostly because it would've meant that I had finally made my way back here to try more of what their menu had to offer before posting this! The one and only time I made my way here, it came after one of my friend's mentioned Mr. Digby's was their new favorite spot in SF for brunch. After one look at the menu, it was easy to see why - while the range of offerings may not have been as extensive as others out there, their selections were no less interesting! Along with somewhat typical options, like Avocado Toast, Chopped Salad, and Eggs Florentine, they also featured dishes like Fried Chicken & Waffles, a Smoked Salmon Spread, and even Breakfast Nachos(!). As delectable as those last two sounded in particular, as well as several other things, I pretty much knew what I was going to get as soon as I saw the FRIED CHICKEN & WAFFLES. Admittedly, the version of this that I had was different than the most recent one on the menu (served as Braised Thighs with Ginger Butter and Maple Syrup versus Tenders served with Honey Drizzle, Apple Butter, and Maple Syrup), but it was so good! The batter was very crispy and the chicken itself was really moist. Plus, the waffle was AMAZING! Although it looked a bit dark, I love how it had chunks of chicken in it and was well complemented by the ginger butter. Delicious! Ever since that trip here, I long hoped to come back to check out items from their dinner menu as well, like their chicken pot pie and fish & chips, but never got the chance to, unfortunately. Which, in turn, only makes the news of Mr. Digby's closure that much sadder. At least their spirit (indirectly) lives on at their sister spot, Novy, down the street! So, in that vein, I guess that means I should make my way there sooner rather than later! read more

Embarrassingly, the only reference I have is the frozen Marie Calendar's ones you can get at a grocery store... lol The one from Mr. Digby's is definitely better than the frozen ones (sorry for my lack of reference), but I think there just isn't too much going on with the Chicken Pot Pies themselves. It's pretty simple, chicken and some vegetables in a gravy covered with a puff pastry. It's enjoyable, warming and filling though; I'm glad I finally got to try a proper one! The fries were well seasoned and crispy and the Banana Cream Pie was a very nice portion and wasn't overly sweet. Seems like a great neighborhood spot for a casual meal. read more

Came here for Cocktail Hour with the girls. My friend and I got cucumber margaritas and my other friend ordered a Moscow Mule. The cucumber margarita was very delicious and had a refreshing feel. Definitely addicting especially that the cocktail hour price! It was a great place for drinks. I love the ambiance there. It had that nice dim lighting that created intimacy but not so dark that you can't see and you get sleepy. We sat at a high top in the corner and it was a nice space. There's something here for everyone. Spicy orange chicken wings for someone looking for traditional bar food, oyster mushrooms for vegetarians, pot pies if youre looking for something traditional, and drinks if youre just here for a good time and not a long time. It's good. Not sure it's great, but it was solid. We arrived early and got two happy hour appetizers. Pimento cheese and crackers and deviled eggs. The eggs were totally lackluster (the loaded ones I see here on yelp look WAY better) but the pimento was pretty good. We got the burrata and tomato starter which was ok too. Next we got fish and chips and the broccolini flatbread. The fish and chips may have been the highlight of the meal. Light and tasty with really good spicy tartar sauce. It was an early afternoon during a Saturday in November when we dropped into Mr. Digbys in Noe Valley. I checked in with the hostess, and she informed us the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes. This was our second visit, and we quickly scanned the brunch menu, and I ordered a Frittata and a Scramble Toast. Our server, Sarah, was very helpful. We sat outside in the min parked and enjoyed the beautiful weather and simple ambiance. We haven't been lately, but we are looking forward to another visit for brunch. This is now one of my favorite brunch place! It was a stunning Saturday morning and we were seated in a shaded area beside the restaurant. The waitstaff was very attentive and she moved the umbrella to make sure we had full shade. We ordered the breakfast pizza and the Eggs A La Vodka. The sesame seed flatbread on the pizza was light, airy, and flaky and the creme fraische went perfectly with the smoked salmon. I ate it all and didn't feel so stuffed. They always have the staple of tomato eggs, breakfast sandwich, chicken and waffles, burger. They have cute thinks like breakfast pizza (smoked salmon on sesame flat bread. Salads are also amazing. Mom had the little gem today with persimmon, beets, radish and all. The stars of this place are the cocktails, the appetizers, and dessert. I had the holiday cocktail "Slay My Name". Boy, is that dangerous. It's easy to have several of these as it's the right amount of sweetness and bubbly. Our table got several orders of deviled eggs however we ordered more of the Potato and Leek Croquettes. Since brunch was still being served, I got the chilaquiles ($20) which were okay. To be honest, I have had better -- the portion size was spot on and while I did have leftovers I didn't think it warranted a take-home box. My friend had the steak tartare which she enjoyed! I'm not much of a steak tartare fan so I passed this up. (For some reason raw fish seems okay to consume in my logic, but raw beef does not -- maybe it's having grown up when mad cow disease was a thing.) Service was friendly but a bit slow. Albeit there was just one (!!!) person in charge of the bar and high top table service, but we constantly had to ask a passing waitperson to take our order, ask for the bill, etc. I did love the ambiance however! With so many restaurants closing lately, it's been difficult to find one that also maintains a full bar. We chose Mr. Digby's because of that and we were pleasantly surprised. First of all, the service was good. Friendly, helpful, and professional. The menu isn't that large but there is something for everyone on it. We shared two appetizers while enjoying Ketel One martinis. We started with the Salt and Pepper Wings. Our server was spot on when she described them as having, "a nice amount of heat but not too overwhelming". They were served with an onion dip on the side and they were great! Next came the Iceberg Wedge Salad with chunks of blue cheese and bacon. This was much bigger than we thought but we plowed through it and made a note that next time we would only order the salad or the wings before dinner. We ordered the Chicken Pot Pie and the Veggie Burger with Fries for our main dishes. Again, the portion size was generous. The Chicken Pot Pie was delicious but needed more seasoning. A few more dashes of salt would have helped or at least have salt and pepper shakers available on the tables so you could self-season. The potpie was filled with a lot of dark meat and pearled onions. It was definitely the perfect comfort food for that chilly evening we visited. The Veggie Burger was loaded with flavor, especially with the added accouterments. It was a bit well done and the sides were audibly crunchy, but the interior was soft. The fries were excellent. A framed pic of the adorable, real-life Mr. Digby, the restaurant owner's childhood dog, looked over us in our plush bar seats. The Biscuits & Gravy ($17), served in a miniature casserole dish, was a stunner, visually. Six silver dollar-sized biscuits sat in a pool of gravy which had too many sausage crumbles for my liking. I would've preferred more gravy-to-meat ratio, especially since the sausage wasn't well seasoned. The two halves of the Deviled Eggs ($6) didn't have that signature creamy, whipped yolk filling but it was properly topped with chives & paprika. Not a shareable portion, so make sure to order enough for those who want a taste. I want to love Mr. Digby's more than I did. And then there was magical Ivette. If Marvel needs a new Avenger, it's this bartender. They saw me collapse onto the barstool like a Victorian widow and just knew. No "What can I get you?" No awkward small talk. Just a subtle nod, like, "I got this, sad traveler." What they served me was not just a drink. It was a life-saving serum disguised as a cocktail. It had layers. Complexity. I think it cured my seasonal depression. Halfway through, I felt my spine straighten, my credit score rise, and my third eye blink open. But wait--this story isn't just about hydration. It's about a rescue operation. In the span of 45 minutes, Ivette: Talked me down from a crisis about my job, my love life, and my rapidly declining faith in humanity. Told me a joke so funny I snorted my drink and laughed for the first time in months. Subtly blocked my ex's number on my phone without me noticing (okay, maybe I helped, but it felt magical). Overpriced mediocre food and service. The spinach bread appetizer was chewy and not very tasty. Both servers were unsure what the third mushroom in the roasted mushroom entree was. One said she would find out and never returned with the answer. The second who ended up being our server just said she couldn't recall and didn't offer to find out. The pot pie was ok but for the portion size and price is not worth it. We mentioned it was our anniversary and there was no gesture even though a cookie and panna cotta was on the dessert menu. Also, only two offerings of dessert felt paltry for a restaurant charging $22 for a few roasted mushrooms and parsnip mash. $200 for 2 adults, a teenager and a toddler. Drinks: Herbal Mocktail - light and refreshing, tart and lemon forward with a slightly herbaceous note Tropical Mocktail - sweet fruity with notes of passion fruit in a beautiful reddish pink from the hibiscus Food: French Toast Sticks - so good a must order for the table, these were crunchy, deep fried french toast sticks served with pumpkin butter, came with 4 pieces Waygu Beef Tartar - good, beef was tender with bits of parmesan and capers, served with crostini, seasoning was okay wish there was a bit more acid Summer Vegetable Hash - two poached eggs on top of a bed of more fall themed vegetables like potatoes and delicata squash with a bit of arugula and calabrian chili, interesting wish the vegetables had more of a crisp and char Sesame Flatbread - this is served with a smoked salmon mousse, flat bread was tasty and mousse was well seasoned and a nice whipped texture, think I would have preferred slices of smoked salmon but overall good Service was good, servers checked in regularly, water was refilled often no complaints. Overall more of a 3.5. Food was good but other than the French Toast Sticks nothing really blew us away. Decent brunch and love that you can make a reservation. I never went inside so I can't speak to the vibe/atmosphere but the staff was super friendly and easy going, and the service was great. We ordered: - Sweet Potato Fritters: crispy on the outside, very soft (almost mushy) on the inside. Couldn't quite put my finger on what exactly the dip was. It tasted of fruit and was unusual, but went well with the fritter. - Brussels & Persimmon Salad: favorite dish of the evening. Flavorful and well balanced! Every ingredient played so well together. - Spinach Dip Hot Bread: this was equally creative and delicious. The spinach dip is warm and gooey on the inside. The sourdough bread has a good crust on the outside. - French Onion Soup: a bit of cheese overload for me (shocking, since I am cheese obsessed). It congealed and was a little challenging to eat but the soup itself was tasty - Salt & Pepper Wings: well seasoned, nice and crispy, and the chunky onion dip was another unusual but delicious pairing - Garden Gimlet: might be one of my favorite cocktails ever. Apparently we stumbled onto one of Noe Valley's favorite brunch spot! The food is great. Leaning towards a southern vibe with California influences. The brunch menu is chock full of items that will cure whatever ails you. In other words, hangover food! The French toast is amazing as are the eggs a la vodka. The cocktails were great as was all of the food. Those rolls with honey butter - omg! The fried mushrooms, chicken wings and the spinach dip thing were all fantastic. We were a larger group so I got to sample many of the dishes and it's pretty consistently delicious. It's nice that it's family friendly early on and then more party time later. While I don't dine in Noe Valley often, I've tried most of the restaurants and Mr. Digby's is def a welcome addition to the area. tl;dr: Great new American Comfort Food restaurant in Noe Valley with a "grandma's home" meets American diner vibe. Still working out a few opening kinks, but seems like a solid place for a casual dinner and cocktails. COVID PRECAUTIONS - 4/5 - They offer both outdoor and indoor dining. Outdoor seating has heat lamps. Indoor seating was fairly well spaced out. - Hand sanitizer is available at the entrance. - Masks required - Staff wearing masks - Touchless menu with QR code - Touchless payments (though this also meant getting quite closer to the server holding the device) - NO contact tracing - NO temperature checking - NO soap in the bathroom (I think just ran out? but gotta keep that stocked especially now) FOOD - 3/5 Delicious comfort food and traditional American fare. We tried the: - Salisbury Meatballs ($24) - Beef Tartare ($13) - Baked Oysters ($18) - Ginger, Butter Maple Carrots ($6) - Fries ($6) Also on the menu: - Chicken Pot Pie ($24) - Pan Seared Trout ($28) - Ham-Brined Pork Chop ($28) - Veg Hen of the Woods Mushroom Stew ($23) - Spinach Dip Bread ($12) (Sold out) - Salt & Pepper Wings ($15) - Roasted Broccoli ($6) Overall everything was very good. Meatballs were my favorite, particularly the creamy potatoes, though I would have preferred more potatoes - we finished all the sauce and potatoes and still had one (of 3) meatballs left. Beef Tartare was bright and refreshing, but unfortunately it came after the meatballs (kitchen mishap?) rather than as a starter, so felt out of order. Maple carrots and fries were great sides, and probably equally unhealthy :) This feels a bit like the food my grandparents would cook for special family gatherings. It's rich and comforting, though I felt it lacked a bit of originality. DRINKS - 4/5: We tried the: - Boulevardier ($13) - Snake Eyes ($13) - Garden Gimlet ($130 All were solid cocktails. The Snake Eyes was a bit unique, as was the Sidewalk Lemonade (which we didn't try), but the rest of the cocktail menu was fairly standard. My first Boulevardier was much better than the second, I think too much vermouth in the 2nd round. AMBIENCE - 5/5. Great ambience and interior decorating. The decorations also remind me of Grandma's house. The outside patio is also nice, with plenty of overhead heaters. SERVICE - 3/5. Service was friendly and attentive. A few kinks that I'm sure they'll work out over time - like we didn't get any napkins (had to ask) and the meal was out of order - the meatballs arrived first, then after we completely finished, the beef tartare, and then the oysters. We ordered the cocktails right away, and yet they also arrived half way through the meatballs. (Part of this was the meatballs were crazy fast, and part of this is the cocktails were quite slow.) There were also a few times the staff started to take our food before it was finished. (No, I'm never done with the fries!) Overall, a good experience, and I think a few of the rough edges will be smoothed. Delighted to have a new restaurant in the neighborhood! read more

We're fortunate to be able to have a restaurant like this as our "neighborhood spot"! The food here is really good and consistent. We've been here for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Besides the food, the service really stands out. We've been fortunate to have multiple servers here and all have been friendly & attentive. We had an unfortunate experience at this place that had nothing to do with the food (which was good--hamburgers). They sat us at a hightop near a window facing Church, and a creepy guy was making rude gestures and then came right up to the window and was videotaping us! The staff refused to reseat us or even suggest lowering the shade, which we eventually figured out how to do ourselves. They said there was nothing they could do about it. read more

I want to say it is probably the best fish and chips I have had...sets a new standard. Light batter with plump fresh fish. Three large pieces of perfectly prepared battered fish. I will be craving it. Another winner was the Cioppino (fish stew). Los of goodness (fishes) in a bowl with just the right marinara sauce. Unfortunately the dipping bread did not seem fresh. Oh well...not a big deal. I was fluctuating between the chicken pot pie which I believe may be their signature dish and also quite amazing but glad I picked the fish and chips. In fact, not sure there is a bad choice on the menu. We were lucky to hit happy hour and our cocktails were $10 each. I enjoyed my two Manhattans. The $10 wine on happy hour was a nice pour and a quality red ganache. Finished off with sharing the peanutbutter pie. It truly was a delicious meal from start to finish. It was topped off with timly, excellent service from our server Frankie. It is a comfortable bar no frills kinda restaurant. Outside seating with heaters available. Overall, I highly recommend especially if nearby. read more
