Mr Beery's - Lagunitas on draft - Bars Near Me - Bethpage, New York

This venue and its staff failed to create a safe environment (my assessment as a former bouncer). First off, they wanted a $10 cover and then almost $10 a blue moon at a punk/metal event, showing zero respect for the socioeconomic roots of either counterculture, and confiscated the narcan i carry on me as a harm reduction worker (the bouncer would also not accept the life saving intervention as a donation and disposed of it admitting staff was untrained in administration). The acts were not given any entry comps (their girlfriends were charged admission) nor were they given any drink ticket as is standard courtesy. The Merch stand worker also was attempting to overcharge and pocket the difference, and the way the stage area and merch table were laid out created a bottle neck emergency evacuation hazzard. So right off the bat bouncers were allowing weapons including illegal ones into the event because being a female who has self defence tools on me if i need to evade an attack i was never patted down nor was my bag glanced in, meaning had I wanted i could have had a firearm or explosive in the place undetected. I had a Poland spring bottle in a jacket liner with a measured nights serving of alcohol because i was warned that the bartenders over/under pour drinks regularly and will intentionally overserve AFABS and rip off girls less desirable to predators and male patrons making it hard to track and moderate your own consumption. I noticed over half a dozen instances of open visible use of dry goods, i suspect cocaine, and the bouncer i interacted with showed clear signs of stimulant abuse including pupil dilation, aggressive manic speech patterns, and injured me unprovoked. I was evicted because he saw me disposing of the empty container that had been used to smuggle in a weak combination of gin and pinappe juice (a Poland spring bottle) and roughly siezed me by the upper arm gripping a spot where hours earlier id gotten a fresh tattoo (I am female, and was at least a head shorter and 75lbs lighter, and responding actively and cooperativly to verbal prompts, there was no excuse to physically grab me). Having worked similar positions, the appropriate protocol would have been to pat me down to make sure i didnt have anything else, offer me hydration, and encourage me to take a seat until he could be sure id processed what id consumed safely. I have both autism and blunt force brain damage, so sober i can stumble, slur words, etc so despite being totally in control because of my disability for safety reasons he should have used his breathalyzer to confirm my story that i was a slightly tipsy disabled person and not vulnerably intoxicated. He ejected me using physical force despite my total corgel cooperation, including assurance that id bounced too and understood if his boss had a policy he had to follow, was happy to see myself out and wanted to make no extra work he either due to stimulant intoxication or just sadism insisted on keeping a gip on where i explained my new tattoo was that bruised 48 hours instead of letting me peacefully simply to avoid making a scene during my friends set (i never resisted and was waing myself out quietly). At that point there was zero benefit in ejecting me other than anger that i was unwilling after a $10 cover to trust spending $50 more on drinks that id been pre-warned were inconsistent and would intentionally be served in a way that woud hinder me from tracking my intake accurately. My partner noticed him bringing me (a lone disabled intoxicated female) to the front entrance with no confirmation that i could even call myself an uber. he intercepted, said i was with him, and he would drive me home. THIS BOUNCER WITHOUT A SECOND QUESTION HANDED ME OFF TO A MALE I HAD NOT ENTERED WITH AND DID NOT INTERRACT WITH ALL NIGHT TO BE DRIVEN WAY IN HIS CAR WITH NO MEDICAL ASSESSMENT OF MY SAFETY AWARENESS OR INTOXICATION LEVEL (like i said although i had only a light buzz my disability causes motor issues that can mimic intoxication far worse than my actual state and he asked for no proof before handing me off to the first male who said he knew me and would take me home). Things The venue Is Cool With: violating fire code by fucking up accessibility of exits, weapons, the open trafficking and consumption of coke, bouncing staff being high on uppers, inconsistently pouring drinks so you can't safely track your own consumption, mahanding drunk girls causing injury despite calm polite copiance and handing them off to strange men to be driven off with, shorting the acts or overcharging to pocket the difference Not cool: narcan, being cheap/poor/aware from other women I couldn't trust the pour at the bar, recycling, showing the acts basic respect by giving them entry comps and drink tickets for their MF girlfriends FEMALES BEWARE AND AVOID read more

Your life is really going places when you're at a dive bar, alone, BEFORE the entertainment shows up at 7:30 in the p.m. on a Wednesday. But enough about me. There are a few kinds of dive bars. Well, maybe two, and then from those two categories spring several subcategories. You have cool ones and shit ones. The latter are dive bars by default, dive bars without character, dive bars where optimism and decency and hope truly took a, well, dive. The challenge with a dive bar is that you can't tell what kind of a dive bar you've got until you walk inside. Maybe you've got a dive bar in your neighborhood and you already know its reputation, but most of the time dive bars are what catch your eye when you're on your way somewhere else, like to a nice bar. I was doing some writing at a Starbucks in Bethpage because I was getting sick of writing at the Starbuckses in my home town, and I was considering doing an open mic, and I saw that one was taking place at Mr. Beery's, a mere .3 miles away from the aforementioned Bethpage Starbucks. So I got some work done and I drove over. Mr. Beery's holds court in the corner of a strip mall on a hit-or-miss section of Hempstead Turnpike, next to a Brothers 3 Pools establishment, and I always hated the name "Brothers 3 Pools" but I guess that's a subject I can tackle in another Yelp review, though I don't have a pool and have only one brother. From the outside, Mr. Beery's is the kind of place you don't want to enter with your hands inside your pockets, because you feel like you could get jumped at any moment. But it was only half past seven, so the crowd consisted a handful of tattooed individuals who could definitely throw me through a window if it was "Toss a Stranger Through a Window Wednesday." And the male patrons could, too. The establishment has a narrow layout, as if it were two lanes of a former bowling alley, with a cornered niche for the entertainment. There's a working men's room with a urinal instructing you to PUSH IN [the handle] TO FLUSH. These directions were accurate, I must attest. But enough about the bathroom. I'll reserve a more thorough review of that space for the Yelp spinoff, YelpPublicBathrooms, starting with a review of the very uninspired albeit accurate name. If I stopped the review here, you would not only be relieved, but you'd assume this was just some average dive bar. HOWEVER However, when you reach the actual bar -- isn't it weird that "bar" can mean both the area where you sit on stools and order drinks as well as the entire building? -- you notice something that elevates Mr. Berry's to Cool Bardom: The beers. I'm a snob for beers (among other things), and not only do they offer -- in addition to the usual swill (FIVE MIller Genuine Drafts for twenty bucks? The Champagne of Beers, indeed!), they have the following (to name just three) from my list of favorites: * La Chouffe * St. Bernardus Abt 12 * St. Bernardus Tripel ...and these are not only ON TAP, but these beers are pulled from branded taps. Meaning my Tripel was poured from a fancy tap on top of which stood an actual grinning St. Bernardus monk action figure, clearly offering his blessings for the smart choice I made. I drank my beer (in an actual tulip glass -- fancy!) as the box of juke played a rather eclectic selection that included "Forever" by Throwdown, "Scratch the Surface" by Sick of It All, some song from Motley Crüe that was a pop hit 100 years ago, some song my Shazam music recognition app could not recognize but the makes-Tom-Waits-sound-like-Ella-Fitzgerald singer was in dire need of an otolaryngologist, and "White Lines" by Melle Mel. And I thought to myself, "This is a hell of a dive bar. NOT a dive bar from hell." I didn't stick around for the open mic. There's also an almost-full-size bear in the corner. I dunno about this place. It's like the cliche dive bar from every single movie you've seen where the credits open to reveal a down in the dump's protagonist searching for their soul at the bottom of a bottle. Live music is nice. But maybe the owner could update the look so it doesn't constantly come off as the vomit covered stage Metallica was discovered on back in 1985? The floor is a mixture of pine and lost dreams, mixed in with cigerette ash and the smell of scrote. And before you say to me "well how do you know what that smells like" there's literally a scrote hanging behind the bar, almost as an homage to the stink that comes up off the floor. There's coat hangers with jackets straight from the 70s. Razor blade lines etched into the old wooden bar, a throwback to when nose candy was part of that bars balanced breakfast. This place needs an update, and badly so. You go to a bar to drink away your depression, not find more of it. Some of the Bartenders are openly admitted not licensed to practice. Just dudes who have drank there so long they've seen how every drink is made. That's cool guys but if you're so sure of yourself in making an old fashioned , then just take the test for it. Overall, between the almost required rule that you smoke 3 packs a day to even get into this place, the groupies who have burned so many bridges they can only find socializing here standing out in the back near the abandoned RV chugging their Red Bulls and vodkas, and the atmosphere that screams Long Island lower class, I really don't recommend this place. I'm not saying the staff can't be nice , and I wasn't given a bad attitude, I just ... I didn't trust the glass I got, I didn't wanna trip for the fear of my palms touching that floor, and I could feel the covid entering my body almost like a bracelet you get from other bars. "Ok you're of age here's your covid and enjoy" Times are tough. Sure. I get that. But whoever owns this place needs to refinance or something, upgrade the looks, update the logo, bring 1987 into 2023 and maybe they'll actually see they can get more patrons to a spot that is pretty convenient overall for many to walk home safely. Steve, the owner, is not the icon everyone talks about. I was waiting for my friend to come out of the bathroom and heard him talking shit about to me to one of his liquor vendors. Why he would point me out to someone I don't know and talk shit to him about me is so childish. This place is a mess. Came here for years, and on my personal time I messed up, and to my face he is nice however talks shit about me to everyone that comes in the place. Also, his son Greg ordered stickers from me, and then ghosted me. I had to take months to get paid for them and charged my cost on them. Yeah, Steve, next time you talk shit about someone, make sure they are not still there just a few feet away. I really always liked you, but it is heartbreaking to know the real you. Unbelievable. What happened to me, if the same thing happened to someone in your family, I wonder if you would talk shit about them to even your liquor vendor. I was in a very bad part of my life. Not once did you ask me about what happened. You just assume and make your own conclusion. over 10 years later and you are still making it a point to talk shit about to me about a random person. Unbelievable. Someone I always liked and looked forward to seeing in the bar, and even this time, shook my hand, and then talked shit about to me about someone I don't even know. I just wanted to post this on here so everyone knows, in my experience, just like Steve labeled me with no explanation, Steve is one sided and in my opinion, I could go straight to God and tell him Steve and I never need to speak again. Maybe Steve should run a background check on every patron that visits his bar. He would have an absolute ton of people to talk shit about to many more random people. Good job Steve. Simply put, an awesome dive bar -- cannot believe this was not put on my map earlier. And I mean a dive bar done the right way (not just a filthy establishment slinging cheap beers). Place has that classic aged, divey look. Christmas lights, a worn (but not dirty) bar top that looks like it has not been touched since the 70s, ample wood paneling and plenty of bar games (e.g., darts and some old arcade games) are a few of the highlights. They have the staples that every dive bar should have: cheap canned beers, tallboys, standard battery of cheap liquor, and mixed drinks served up in pint glasses (a lot of bang for your buck). To my surprise, they had a really solid rotating beer menu (bit of a beer snob -- see Untappd). Had about 15-20 lines that they constantly swap out. They bring in some hard-to-find beers, so I was impressed. Guys manning the bar were quick, attentive and personable (and they were working a packed house). Took time to greet patrons old and new, so there was a nice personal vibe. You could tell these guys invest in relationships with their customers. There is live music on Friday and Saturday (caught a few local bands). Also have open mic on Thursdays. So easy for these small venues to mess up the sound and/or crank the volume up to a deafeningly-high level; Mr. Beery's has the balance down (viz., your ears are not ringing for 24 hours after the fact and you can actually have a conversation with someone while a band is on). When you want to drink a beer with REAL people with no attitudes and NO snobs, NO hipsters, just REAL people that drink REAL beer, then look no further! I grew up with this place in my hometown, moved a state away, and could still find myself at Mr. Beery's once a month... The only reason I give Mr. Beery's 4 stars and not 5 is because I know it's not for everyone. That and I don't want it to get too crowded. I read a review on a craft beer site that said something about needing Tats and knife scars to get into Beery's but that's just narrow and dumb. The crowd here may look rough around the edges to the conservative (closed) minded, but the staff is uber friendly and fun, and the patrons are diverse. Calling it a dive is accurate I guess, but it really doesn't do the place justice. They have a great beer selection without being pretentious, and reasonable prices. The folks at Beery's are doing a good thing, and every neighborhood should be lucky enough to have a place like this. read more

Tom the bartender knows what he's doing and is great for recommending brews to try. It's neither hipster-ish, nor full of frat boys drinking Bud, but just a cool place to hang out, drink some great beers, and occasionally see some local musicians. read more

I don't like beer, but I love Mr Beery's! I used to go here for shows. They have this ingenious piece of crap murphy-bed of a stage in the back that folds down from the wall, and they're smart enough to keep a couple of popular liquors in stock for jerks like me who make such generalized statements as "I dunno, I just hate beer!" It was just such a statement that made the bartender spring into action. He asked me what it was that I didn't like about beer. I told him as best as I could and he sussed out that it is actually hops, specifically, that I don't have a taste for. He had me try two beers that had little to no hoppy taste and lo and behold! I. Liked. A beer. It was a freakin miracle and now I have no doubts that they know their stuff. So cheers, Mr Beery's! It's a great little dive and I definitely recommend it, especially if you're actually a fan of beer. read more

Uber bummed that I currently live in Jersey City and no longer in Queens or on Long island. So many fond memories of being at Beery's and seeing friend's bands, or hearing new bands for the first time and watching people get tipsy and finally have the courage to dance their hearts out. Yeah, yeah... that was even me. There are some incredible bartenders there that will always make you feel well taken care of, and sometimes I admit it would get insanely loud in there and hard to hear with the music playing, but if you're having fun and dancing with your friends... does that really matter? read more

being a professional musician, I get to see many venues-the good the bad and the ugly. I am blessed to have played many elegant upscale venues from NYC to the Hamptons. Besides being a customer, they recently started JAZZ/BLUES brunches every Sunday (12-3:00pm) and it is starting to pick up. I bring in different musicians to perform with me each Sunday, to keep things fresh. Normally the music they have at night is rock but the jazz is catching on. I LOVE BEERYS! So many long, awesome nights at Open Mic (Thursday) and shows. Mr. Beerys always has an amazing beer selection, and how can you beat a $4 beer of the week? The staff is incredible, some of the nicest bartenders I've had the pleasure of knowing. The ten-ski is always fun to share with friends (or a friend... or just keep for yourself). (Don't judge me) We legit packed the place with about 80 people. Mr. Beery and his son had no idea what they were in for. I have driven past Mr. Beery's since I was a kid. I always saw the sign advertising how early they opened, and that ridiculous cartoon logo, and thought "What a dump, I'm never going there!" Lo and behold eventually my friends' band was playing there, so we went. I was so surprised! This place is a no-frills (well I expected THAT) bar with a surprisingly good sound system, a stage for when bands play, and a lot of space. It was much bigger than I thought it would be, and you can park or hang out in the back under a tent and buy dirty meat from a dirty winnebago, good stuff. We had a great time, and came back a few weeks later to play in their open mic. We met a bunch of great people trying to promote their music, and had a nice chat with the sound guy. read more

This is a pretty cool dive bar. I went when there was some music playing. There was a 5$ cover and the music was nothing special but still a pretty chill environment. Diverse crowd. Almost seems like it would be a biker bar but the age range was from early 20's on. I thought that had a very decent selection of beers on tap. They have the alcohol % posted too which I thought was pretty neat. They had a nice little special too. I had a pretty good experience. I've been to Beery's more times than I care to admit because my roommate's band plays there from time to time. My last time there I arrived very early and ordered a number of drinks at the bar. About two hours in, I walked outside for a moment to greet my friends and I was asked to pay a cover upon reentry. I asked "Why, after being here for 2 hours, do I have to pay a cover?" The bouncer aggressively stated, "Because." I left thereafter to withdraw cash from my bank and upon my return, he refused me entry. "Don't bother, you're not allowed back in", he said. I wasn't allowed back in to see my friend play, for no apparent reason. I've never been ejected from a bar in my entire life and I am ashamed to say that I was ejected from Mr. Beery's in Bethpage, a bar that no one will ever remember, for reasons unworthy of a story.
