If you're planning a breakfast outing to the Mountain Top Diner in Romney, WV, do yourself a favor and keep driving--maybe swing by the Burger King down the road or, better yet, head home and whip up some eggs. We ventured there for the "All You Can Eat" breakfast buffet with high hopes of getting our fill, only to discover that at 9 AM, the buffet was less "All You Can Eat" and more "All You Can Hope For." For $12, you'd expect at least a solid spread, but it was practically empty. I'm talking about the kind of empty that makes you wonder if a pack of hungry ghosts had been through before you. A few stray pieces of bacon here, maybe some eggs that had seen better days--if you're lucky enough to snag them before they disappear into the ether. The term "All You Can Eat" feels like a cruel joke when you're left with a plate that screams "This Is It." The ambiance doesn't do much to help either. Picture a run-down, old-school diner that feels like it should have stayed closed after COVID. The worn-out booths, faded décor, and a general sense of neglect make you wonder if time simply stopped here--and not in a charming way. It's less retro and more relic. If you're considering the experience for the value, don't. You're better off grabbing a drive-thru breakfast sandwich or breaking out the skillet at home. At least then, you won't be left wondering how you paid $12 for what amounts to a scavenger hunt. Mountain Top Diner's breakfast buffet? One star--and that's generous. read more

This was such a disappointment. The food and service quality has plummeted since re-opening, and especially since pre-covid. I ordered toast & gravy (because the boscuits are terrible) and hash browns. The food arrive cold. Nothing worse than cold gravy. I sent it back to be heated. The gravy came back lukewarm and potatoes were somewhat hot. The gravy was a bit runny and did not taste as good as in the past. Our server was ok, but not the greatest. I hate being called: hun, honey, sweetheart etc. I am none of those things to a server. Sir & ma'am will suffice or just a plain "you're welcome, etc." My dining partner ordered sausage patty, eggs & a pancake. The eggs were over-cooked and cold. The patty was quite hard. We stopped here for breakfast, and were given menu's and the waitress took our drink orders. She brought us our drinks and didn't come back to take our orders. The other waitress was standing behind the counter talking to a female customer in the first booth. We sat for 20 minutes and were never acknowledged so we went to pay and left. I know it is a small town and everyone knows each other but waitresses should take care of all customers, not just the ones they know. It will be a long time, if ever, before we return! read more

My wife, sister-in-law and i stopped in, I am not from the local area and have not been in here in several years. The place was spotlessly neat and clean. I ordered the specialty of the night, meatloaf and was extremely satisfied with the the meal. There was a very generous portion of both the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. it also came with a side salad. This was by far the best meatloaf I have had in a restaurant for many years. Seated immediately as it is first come first served well maybe more so on first seated. Both of us had the Ribeye special with baked potato and side salad. Salad was fresh but dry it consisted of lettuce tomato green peppers and onions. The entrees were very very slow to come out and this is the part where first was not correct. We watched meals go to people who came in well after us. The steak my wife had was not as fatty and she was satisfied with the preparation and flavor. Mine was cooked perfectly and also had good flavor but was very fatty. The potatoes were not hot enough to even melt our butter and they weren't baking potatoes. Don't get me wrong I ate a bunch of white potatoes growing up, because that's what we grew, but never in a restaurant. The waitress was super busy and even she knew meals were going out before ours. We saw her question it to another employee but no one ever explained why we were delayed. My husband went to restaurant this morning and placed carryout order for a biscuit with bacon and a biscuit with egg, bacon and cheese. The biscuits were the worst I have ever had. First off they were left over from the day before and crumbled when you picked up to eat. I threw mine away. My husband only ate the egg and bacon. Biscuits crumbled so badly it looked like corn meal in the carryout container. I couldn't even eat my bacon because it was not fully cooked. read more

I was there yesterday for the $12.99 8-11am All You Can Eat Saturday breakfast buffet. It was good food. Scrambled eggs, bacon (well cooked and well drained), sausage patties and sausage links, grits, biscuits and sausage gravy, French toast, pancakes, and maybe something else I'm forgetting. Everything was fresh and tasted good. The place was packed - every table and booth. I sat at the counter. I asked a guy who works there if these numbers were typical numbers for a Saturday. He said it is typical for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, even though the buffet is only on Saturday, so they seem to be doing well. Even with that crowd, they never ran out. The servers kept bringing out fresh stuff in small batches from the kitchen to keep the buffet replenished. When they give you your ticket to take to the register, it has 2 prices on it - approx. 60¢ cheaper if you pay with cash than with a credit card. read more

I've gone past this restaurant hundreds of times over the years and tonight I decided to stop because I was hungry for breakfast food. BIG MISTAKE! I ordered two eggs lightly scrambled, a side order of Scrapple, home fries with onion, toast and coffee. The waitress made a big deal out of being able to offer flavored creamer with the coffee. I have to acknowledge the coffee was good with the creamer offered. It of course was brought out first. 15 minutes later a plate of the worst looking home fries were delivered to me with my toast. The serving was large enough to feed 4 people but only fit enough to be consumed by 1 person. They were undoubtedly dropped into a hot oil deep fryer and served way over cooked. All but about 4 slices of potato were unfit to eat. The rest of the plate full of potatoes was dreadful. Secondly my toast to my amazement consisted of one slice of bread which was toasted on one side only. The 2nd slice of what was supposed to be toast was simply warm bread, not toasted at all. I questioned the waitress and asked her if it appeared to be toasted and she said "NO". Do you think she offered to replace it? The answer was she didn't say anything but "I'm sorry" No offer to replace it. About 5 minutes after I got the potatoes and toast my what was supposed to be my scramble eggs arrived FRIED over hard. As the waitress set them down in front of me she remembered and said "OH you ordered them scrambled didn't you"? I said yes and I wanted them scrambled lightly. She took the plate of eggs back to the kitchen and another 5 minutes later she brought a plate of the worst scrambled eggs I've ever been served. They were hard and in little pieces. There had to be over 50 little pieces of egg the size of sun flower seeds on the plate. I looked at her with a puzzled expression and I said I ordered my eggs scramble lightly. Again from the waitress "I'm Sorry". No offer to replace them. Ten minutes went past and my scrapple had not been brought out. At this point I was less than pleased and motioned the waitress to the table. I told her that when I ordered my meal I had anticipated the entire meal arriving at one time, NOT IN 3 SEPARATE DELIVERIES AND IN 10 MINUTE INCREMENTS! Again "I'm sorry" came from her lips... I told her that I realized that the preparation of the food was not her fault but to pass on the fact that I suggested that the restaurant needed to HIRE A COOK. Do you think the waitress after seeing all that was wrong with the food made any adjustment to the bill. Hell no she didn't. $12.00 thrown away. When she asked if I wanted anything else I said "Yes a meal which I will get someplace else on my way home". I will never go back to this dive. I should have told them that I wasn't paying for food that wasn't fit for hogs to eat but I didn't want to deal with a unpleasant confrontation or the police so I bit my tongue, paid and left. I even left a 22% gratuity for the waitress which I now regret doing since she didn't offer any justification for what I had been served or any suggestion for replacement of what was served. I can't speak about anything else but for the breakfast food, so for anyone else reading this review to consider eating here for breakfast you should really take my advise and not go in. I suspect that you will be really disappointed unless they replace who I suspect was the cleaning lady who was evidently standing in for and pretending to be a cook. I'm updating to take away one star. While many of the meals are still very good including the traditional and outstanding meatloaf the last two times I've been there and had steak it was very bad. It seems to have been cut this and then cooked from frozen. It had no sear, it was grizzly, dry and tasteless. So much of the rest of the food is very good. I hope they can fix the steaks. read more

They make the most beautiful home fries I've ever seen, and you get a huge pile with breakfast. Also the home made vegetable soup is just like Mom used to make- loaded with veggies,potatoes and meat. Almost like a stew. Very friendly service and great prices. Not for the trendy or influencer type. Just simple, good food. read more
