It is a happy-ending story that enriched our lives. We recommend this shelter wholeheartedly. We lost our Boots in an auto accident when a good samaritan opened the door of my totaled car and he bolted into traffic; Boots was killed instantly. Our hearts were broken. Of course, Boots will never be replaced. Red, however, has filled his paws very well, haha. He helped us heal and is our beloved boy now in his own right. Starting the adoption process was tough. Where to begin? We support the ASPCA and other animal welfare organizations and understand their methodology and honored place in the community, but we wanted to save not just our new dog, but the dog who would take his or her place in the forever-home line, too. We knew that adopting from a no-kill shelter would mean that not just our lucky dog, but another one would live out its natural life in relative comfort and safety, even if it was never re-homed. Red's online picture brought us to Carol and Almost Heaven Sanctuary. He looked nothing like Boots, but there was something in his gaze and stance that told me he was the one. We visited the sanctuary in person and I remain impressed by the operation. It's clean and well-organized. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. All of the dogs look healthy, happy and comfortable. Each has plenty of room in his or her run and kennel, and in the spacious common areas. All the dogs receive personal, loving, human supervision and attention every day. This is an honest review. As other have said, Carol can be brusque. For a moment, please imagine yourself in the driver's seat of a largely one-woman-mission to save dogs' lives. Who am I to judge this person who is doing more to save animals than I ever will in my entire lifetime? I quickly realized I was dealing with a mom raising a couple dozen kids she loves with all her heart. I was more crabby than not while raising just my own two and I am lucky that people cut me a break during those hectic times. We had what we needed to house, feed and care for our children, including medical care. But folks, Carol's dogs never grow up. She never really has enough resources stockpiled to rest easy. Her challenges are huge and unrelenting. Frankly, who cares if she is warm and friendly to people? She is absolutely everything to those dogs and isn't that what you turned to Yelp to find out? Get a dog. Save a dog. It was an easy decision for us. We are eternally grateful.

I believe it is only her running the org, along with a male associate and another person who runs their Facebook page (which has hilariously hidden its reviews, since they keep getting negative ones--and rightfully so). Carol and I have exchanged probably about 60 emails total since I first emailed/applied for my rescue (early July) up until me picking her up (late September). I'm very communicative, and she also responds pretty promptly. Corresponding with her gave me some serious anxiety once I realized that she would deliberately misinterpret anything and everything I say to mean that I am not a good dog-owner, I am not dedicated enough, I am unreliable, etc. when the truth is that I am anything but. PLEASE read these reviews, and the one Facebook review that's linked in one of them. Is there such a thing as rescuing dogs from a rescue org? Because that's what these dogs need. I rescued a senior dog 3 years ago at 10 years old and 57 pounds, and he is now 13 years old and 33 pounds and in better health than ever (he's a dachshund-basset mix). I helped rehabilitate the behavior of a bite-aggressive dog from my county animal shelter. I was a volunteer at Friends of Homeless Animals in Aldie, VA. I am a single, unmarried individual with no kids who makes almost 6 figures and is home pretty often. I would say I'm an ideal adopter/rescuer. Yet she found reasons to assume false things about me and downright judge me because she has such a confirmation bias that everybody is evil. I understand that working with a rescue can make you a cynic - but this woman is beyond cynical. I wanted to meet my dog prior to actually picking her up (she had to be with AHGRR for two months for heartworm treatment and spay), but when I tried to confirm a date, Carol went from saying "Sure, she would love the company......" to "I told you she needs rest........ She shouldn't be disturbed right now." She's very mercurial. I tried to meet the dog a couple weeks before I was to pick her up for good after her spaying (which was Sept 20), and she told me I should just wait to meet her and pick her up in the same day. I asked if Sept 23 was okay, and she said I should come by Sept 22. I said I was busy that day, and she responded saying that I'm too young and too busy for a dog, and that I won't have the time or commitment to give to a dog. Because I was busy ONE day, when I had been trying to make plans several times to meet this dog and *she* was the one who was too busy or unwilling for me to come out to her. The day I picked up my dog, it was clear that she hadn't been groomed or bathed in a long time. Her fur and skin STANK like crazy, with sprays of dandruff every time I petted her. It only took a 45 minute oatmeal bath to get her cleaned up, which I did myself at Pet Supplies Plus. She also had a strange limp on her front right, which I wasn't told anything about. Not that it would have changed my mind from adopting her, but I just wish I had a full picture of the condition of the dog I was getting. She still has the limp today, and I have to get radiographs done for her after having her put on Rimadyl and seeing no effect. Again, her health issues are of no concern financially to me, but just expectations management. The worst part is that she was spayed on Sept 20, I picked her up on Sept 22, and she hadn't been put on any pain killers, no cone, nothing to keep her from licking/scratching at the wound. She was panting constantly from being in pain. Why would you not get a dog put on pain killers for at least 48 hours after the spay, especially an older one? (She's 7 years old) The only thing that would have kept me from giving this place one star is Carol's male associate, whose name I've forgotten. He was a very friendly man with a much more amenable temperament. I appreciated him and was thankful I dealt with him and him only on the day I picked up my beautiful new dog. But Carol's nasty demeanor trumps his kindness, unfortunately. She seems to try and look for reasons to judge you or deem you unworthy of her dogs. If I didn't know better, I would say she was trying to hoard the dogs for herself. The shelter itself is also almost entirely outdoors. Carol is definitely enjoying the power trip of having people come to her and wanting her dogs. How dare she be a gatekeeper for one of the most beautiful breeds out there when she is such an ugly person herself.

Do not take stained glass classes here!…read more Thought this would be a fun thing to do, purchased a class for myself and my wife....wrong! The owner has no teaching ability whatsoever. Instead of an overview of the whole process, she just jumped straight into how to score and cut glass. Would be nice to know what the whole course would cover, what we would do, etc. The cutters we used were designed to be filled with oil (to lubricate the wheel and keep small chips of glass down) but she said but she doesn't do that. She said they can be dipped occasionally in oil, but never offered any advice as to how often, just said "it depends", with no further guidance, nor any oil actually offered. I guess as brand new to this we should know when oil is needed? We did learn how to cut, except it was tedious at times. For example one time she said "don't cut it that way...well you can..some people do...I don't...but you can if you want...it's really up to you"! Often when we asked "why" something was done, she couldn't really answer, and would become vague or argumentative. One time I commented on a piece of glass,mane she said it was "water glass". Not knowing what that means, I asked. She didn't really answer, but said she can just tell by looking at it. (Note going online online later I found that "water glass" is a term used when glass is stretched while being made, giving it the look of rippling water). Very frustrating when trying to learn. We chose a pattern, she then told us to first try to find pieces of glass that might fit from bins of shards from previous classes. Later, she offered some large pieces of glass to chose from, but told us she kept most of the good glass in the back, and to tell us what we wanted, and she would go back to see if she had it. Question...how are we supposed to know what colors and glass patterns we can use when we don't know what she has? Again, very frustrating. We finally said we would just take the patterns home and go online to find some colors and styles we thought might look good, and her comment was "that's cheating"...what? In our second class, we cut glass from cutouts from our patterns. Tough because trying to keep the thin printer paper she gave us from moving while trying to trace around the thin paper with a worn out markers was quite the challenge. Later online search showed lots of easier and better ways to do this. Grinding - this is where it finally got bad. After we had cut out pieces, she directed us to small table top grinders to grind the pieces to fit our patterns, and to take off sharp edges so the foil would stick...what's foil? On my grinder there was a huge amount of glass dust built up around the grinding wheel, which got worse as I ground, coating my hands with glass dust. After about 5 minutes, I overheard her tell my wife "you can spray a little water every now and then"...what...water? I asked her what she meant, and she said she forgot to tell me, and pointed out a spray bottle on the counter, and said to spray a little now and then. THIS IS NOT HOW THIS IS DONE!!! I found out later the grinders are designed to be filled with water, with a sponge that keeps the grinding wheel wet. This keeps the grinding surface cool, makes grinding much easier, keeps the grinding wheel from wearing out, and KEEPS DANGEROUS SILICA DUST FROM FORMING AND BEING BREATHED! There was no water in the grinders, and she gave us no masks or safety glasses. During our second class the AC kicked on, and we were blasted with a very bad, noxious smell. She apologized, said it has been doing this. Note: This is likely caused by never changing the filter, or the coils have severe mold buildup and have never been cleaned. Not good. After our second lesson, I went in and said we were done, didn't want to continue something that kept us frustrated, was taught incorrectly, and not safe. She argued, tried to get us to continue, and tried to justify the incorrect instruction. When she finally accepted we were done, she said she couldn't refund us for the 3 classes we had yet to take because she didn't have the money to refund us. Now it makes sense; her wanting us to try to dig through shards of previous cut glass first, and limiting what glass we actually had to choose from. Same with thin computer paper to try to trace around, worn out markers, no oil for the cutters, etc. The shop is very junky and cluttered, shards of glass everywhere. Note: if you try to contact her on the business number, you will never hear back. We called and left several messages that were never returned. When asked, she said she never checks messages or uses the business phone because of spam...what? She said that maybe we could contact her in her cell phone...but then never gave us the number! DO NOT TAKE STAINED GLASS CLASSES HERE!

I found this place looking for a painted rock to take back to Florida with me. I saw one in the…read morewindow and went in to see if the owner would trade with me for one I had painted. She was so nice and let me switch them out. The store is so amazing, it has blown glass and stained glass. We chatted with the owner and a local patron who takes local pictures. We had a great time. We had fun and purchased five stained glass ornaments and a hand blown bowl. If you are in the area stop by and see the amazing glass in the shop! They also offer classes and studio time to make stained glass pieces. I wish I lived closer!!!
