this is a little burger joint in downtown area. quaint, nostalgic, clean, basic burgers and fries with friendly staff. the burgers are really siders, not bad but simple: burger, (cheese), pickle chip, and onion. you can add ketchup and mustard if you want. get a large combo for $15 with a tip (optional, but as always appreciated by staff, and remember you are in a tourist area, they pay rent too) that adds some shoestring fries (good, and made to order) and a fountain drink (coke, diet, root beer, sprite, etc.) 24oz large (quenches your thirst for sure) not really my kind of burgers, but worth a try, if not just for the experience and a quick bite. read more

Then I asked the lady beside me who had been there before us if she had been waited on and she replied yes and that they were short staff. We waited another 10mins to get our order taken, by that time three other people had come in, then the person was ready to take orders and proceeded to take the orders of the people who had just come in and not the orders of the people who had been waiting. So I spoke up and said we were here before those people and the owner turned around with a nasty voice and said we are short staff today and are trying to do our best. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Made almost to order, my burger was set before me. It was delicious but it just wasn't photogenic. A little messy - a proper four napkin deal here. Fries were shoestring and cooked to the right crispiness and perfect for the ketchup. Very inexpensive. Sit inside at the counter or outside in the shade on a nice day. I use to go here all the time growing up so my review may be biased. I just love the snow white grill. Every time I visit Winchester I have to come here a couple of times. The burgers just can't be beat. The burgers are tiny but taste great. What they lack in size they make up in flavor. Fresh ground beef, grilled onions, and mustard on a (potato?) roll. After 3 or 4 of these and a side of fries, you will be in hamburger heaven. The seating is very limited, so if you come during peak hours its best to get it to go. The employees are super friendly. I was warned against this place when I first moved to town, and I probably should have heeded the warning - but during Apple Blossom Festival (even on the early days) it's tough to get seating at any walking mall restaurant and this place was practically empty. We gave it a shot for that very reason; as my husband says, 'That's what you look for in a restaurant, right? Empty when everything else is full? Probably a good sign!" (Sarcasm, yo.) It's absolutely adorable visually - old school soda shop/diner feel, and they make milkshakes, burgers, fries, onion rings. Was not totally impressed with the food here. It has a White Castle like feel to it and its nice when you can just pick up your food in front of the window, but that's about the only positive there. Each time I went here the food was hit or miss. My first visit I had a terrific cheesesteak and a milkshake that was awesome. The next time I was there I got a chicken cheesesteak that was very heavily cheesed over and a milkshake that was not prepared adequately enough to leave me satisfied for a nice lunch. The third time I just got the milkshake and it was terrible. I had to console myself by going to Red Fox across the street to make up for it. This is last survivor of a mini-chain that serves mini-burgers (called sliders now - who knew) begun in Frederick, MD in 1940, this one opened in 1949 in historic downtown Winchester. It has changed hands a number of times, but still serves basically the same fare. The mini-burger is served with fresh ground beef, mustard, grilled onions, and pickle on a steamed bun - what a krystal idea. You can add cheese, or dress it differently, but it wouldn't be the same, and you don't screw with tradition. The have a hot dog, which they fry, which is cruel and unusual punishment everywhere but New Jersey, where they're called "Rippers" - remember the rant about tradition. They also serve a corn dog, which continues to be a bad use of both the corn and the dog. They have a "Pettite Pulled Pork BBQ" sandwich - remember the rule. And some other sandwiches, but the mini-burgers are the focus here. My wife thinks they're "cute as a bug", but I eat them anyway. Heck, they are darling. I was really excited to check the Snow White Grill, as it's been in business since 1948 - it's in Old Town Winchester, and there was a huge line. You can see inside that they have limited seating, but on the weekends, it's ordering via the window only. I had the Mini-cheeseburger, which the patty was made up of freshly ground local beef that was grilled, some onions, cheese, and a nice tangy sliced pickle. The bread itself was a bit too fluffy, but overall, it was a great slider. I know that this place gets compared to White Castle, but the latter is just more greasier (which make its more tasty to some!). Overall, it was a cute place to check out - it seems as if the average wait time for some customers was about 40-45 minutes, since they order a bunch of sliders at one time. My husband was sad that they ran out of milk for milkshakes - psh! We even went in the next day (the diner was opened for seating), but they also ran out of the deep fried hot dogs - bummer! When I actually crave a food, happily drive an hour or more, and start salivating 20 miles out, you know it's a good thing. Service is slow, but everything is fresh, hot and delicious. My husband and I took our 2 kids here and ordered the "box of fries" which btw, are not the old thin fries they used to have and 6 cheeseburgers. Yea well apparently they can only give a very limited number of ketchup packets. 5 packets was all I could have for 6 cheeseburgers and a box of fries. Really...? The burgers, again, not what they used to be. You are eating more bread than burger. Meaning the burgers don't even fill the slider buns they are on. So disappointing. The food is overpriced, underwhelming and not fresh or quality ingredients. Save you money and go anywhere else in Winchester to eat. If I could give this place negative stars I would. Price is not overwhelming but not worth the poor quality of the food. But the service is absolutely the worst. I asked the counter girl for 5 burgers plain with just ketchup. She said ok and took my order. They gave me 5 burgers with ketchup and low quality onion jam. I said these burgers were supposed to be plain with ketchup. She said we have a disclaimer. I said it's not a disclaimer it is size 24 font on the menu, and I asked verbally if you would make me plain burgers with only ketchup. So am commites to spreading the word on how horrible the service it and how mediocre the food quality is. Ugh.. this cannot be the same place that eased me away from a vegetarian diet when I moved back home 7 years ago. I longed for a taste of childhood. After all, it was just an adorable mini cheeseburger. Best of all it was everything I dreamed of. Word has it SWG is under new ownership and apparently it is not a good thing. When I dropped in, I was the only customer. For some strange reason the burgers came from the back room, not prepared on the grill equipment behind the counter. I ate my 2 mini deluxe bacon cheeseburgers instantly in the car per usual. The buns were weirdly shriveled and fall apart soft. The bottom bun was inedible, wet from the burger, caramelized onions and ruined steamed lettuce. Why put hamburger toppings on the bottom of the burger? They are TOPPINGS. The cheese, bacon, tomato, and mustard were on the top as they should be, the bacon was skimpy, the burger was small but tasty. The onions were very good but had become one glutenous mess with the bottom bun. Half the sandwich was necessarily thrown away. Very disappointing. This was the place locals would literally get bags of these irresistible minis and eat 6 at a time. This spot never disappointed until this visit. Please, please fix this situation. read more

First off I walked in and it smelled a little like pee yet there are no restrooms in there. Two people were working and they did not seem excited to be awake much less working. The guy in the grill dropped several things in the floor, picked them up and put them on the counter. He was wearing food prep gloves but he didn't change them after touching the floor. They ran out of meat for the burgers. The way the place is set up you can't help but hear everything going on. Several people asked if they could wait or come back and neither employee knew if or when new meat would arrive. So, we finally get our sliders (which are completely overpriced) and we didn't get our fries (also overpriced) until we were finished with our burgers and ready to leave. Overall horrible experience. Hands down, the tastiest, most unique pig-out spot in Winchester, and arguably the nation. The rustic feel is personable and welcoming. The staff is friendly and an arm's reach away to cater to all your requests, such as another refill (best tasting Cokes I have ever had in my life) or more burgers, which is very often the case here as it is difficult to stop eating their delicious hamburgers. I can go on all day talking about all their delicious options but I'll condense it to the things you can't afford to miss out on during a visit: The Burger- This is what they are known for. The tiny sliders are packed with flavor and onions and served on a pillowy soft bun than dissolves instantly with each bite. Chili- Served on fries with cheese or by itself, it's meaty and seasoned perfectly. Homemade Malt Milkshakes- Black Raspberry is their most famous flavor but all of them are thick, rich and creamy. Also, if you go during certain hours when Suzanne is working, ask for the S.S. Suzanne, her special twelve topping deep fried hot dog. Trust me, you won't regret it. read more

I was walking the walking mall and looking for stores (just bored and wanted to shop) I saw this place and said it looks cute plus I'm kind of hungry. I walked in and looked around, though there wasn't much to look around because the place is very small. I took a seat at t he counter and the man behind the counter said "what'll have?' I said "Ive never been here before, what do you have?" He explained to me everything they had and the different ways I could get the food prepared. I ended up ordering a fountain drink, tater tots with chili and cheese and 4 hamburgers. The food was delicious, hot fresh and perfect. Over the past year we've tried three times to visit Snow White Grill and haven't really been able to order. The first time was around noon or 1pm. However, we were told that most of the menu was unavailable because they don't run some of their equipment during those hours. No burgers, no hot dogs, etc. Most of the menu was unavailable as a result. The second time we ran into the same problem- why they don't post a lunch menu is beyond me. The third time we tried to go was a Friday evening around 5:30 or 6pm. The young lady at the window told us they were actually closing and wouldn't reopen until 10pm. After three times to just try the place- once! we've officially given up. I have no idea what or when we'd have to do to get some food. read more

I don't understand the good reviews for this place. Very slow service, and and the guy working the take out window gave me some bad attitude when I checked to see how much longer my order would be. By the time we got our burgers and fries they were cold. Not hot ,not warm, COLD. If the food had been hot it might have been good. After seeing reviews, i was eager to try this place... but... Winchester? How was i going to talk my husband into that? We happened to be out at Strasburg last weekend and it wasn't hard to persuade him that a trip through Winchester would be scenic :-) Yay! We ended up eating elsewhere, but took 2 cheese sliders and two regular sliders home for dinner. Two hours later, the buns were not soggy, the cheese was perfectly melty, and the meat flavorful. I'm glad i don't live close because they are as addictive as Krystal's and White Castle's, but i really appreciate that the meat patty is made from house rolled balls of beef and left a bit thicker after cooking. My wife and I stumbled upon the Snow White Grill during our New Year's trip to Winchester, VA. You can tell this place has been around since the 1950s with the old-timey lunch counter and stools. We ordered four burgers (aka sliders), two fries and birch beer (easily the most underrated soft drink out there). The food was sooooooo good. They put entire slices of bacon on the sliders...most places don't give you that much on a full size burger. Our only mistake was that we took our order to go so we couldn't get more sliders. If we make it back to Winchester, we will definitely make another stop at SWG. read more

You come here for that old-time mini diner experience where the cook is an arms reach in front of you working up your sliders or hot dogs. Walking into here, is like getting into a Delorean and going back in time. This is a very small restaurant and have eaten here twice. The food is very good. Not great, but good. This place has a lot of history as Patsy Kline was from Winchester and frequented this place when she was alive. I am giving this place 5 stars because of the nostalgia. Hammer was a 4. They give you an option of fries or tater tots and that alone is worth 5 stars! I LOVE tater tots... On slower times? and maybe all the the time, since its such small place with a small griddle to cook on, it makes it easy for them. Around since the 40's and it still looks the same as it did then, or says the old photos they have around the place! Food here is always good and you won't get a better price anywhere. The only thing: I believe their hours are a bit staggered. They're open at lunch and early afternoon, but I don't think they're open for dinner, but then open for late night. I went for lunch today, and after learning the hamburger meat is cooked with onions that cannot be taken out/off, I changed my order to the cheesesteak sandwich. ...only to find that the cheesesteak sandwich had onions too!!!
